I was sadly disappointed with our visit to La Posta that was actually an important part of our adventure through New Mexico. The last time that I was here was almost 45 years ago. It was my favorite restaurant then and it still holds a place in my heart. We made a reservation and had a nice table in the big room. The young lady seating us was charming and excited to have us there. The food was still as good as I remember. Sadly the service was not. We had a waitress who I had the feeling was very overworked or uninterested in taking care of us. We ordered two rounds of drinks that were supposedly the high-end margaritas and I swear it was the well drink standard margarita. She seemed rushed and preoccupied and frankly I was unimpressed This is still a pretty amazing place and I hope to come back someday and be pleasantly surprised. This review is about the service since I was never served. Have dined at La Posta de Mesilla several times while passing through and always had a good experience. Not this time. I dine alone while traveling. As many single diners know, it can be awkward eating alone in a restaurant full of families and groups. There can also be implicit bias by staff members who sometimes overlook the single diner. That was the case here. I entered 30 minutes before closing and the main dining room was nearly full. I was promptly seated in a corner table and handed a menu. Seven or eight minutes later, a party of five was seated at the table next to me. A waiter showed up 30 seconds later, took their drink orders and brought them water. I waited for five more minutes. Nothing. Got up and walked out. Had to wait another ten minutes before the hostess and manager showed up out front. I voiced my displeasure and reminded them that ignoring single diners is common and that they should take care to avoid it in their restaurant. read more

La Posta during the Christmas season is unmatched. The decorations are seriously over the top beautiful! It is worth visiting for the decor alone. Lots of families go to La Posta as tradition during the holidays and I can see why. There is a feeling of it being really really special. I am not crazy about the food itself, but that's because I am comparing La Posta, Andales, and ChaChis - so that's some fierce competition. I recommend La Posta. read more

Love this place! I thought I'd reviewed them 6 years ago but apparently I had forgotten to do so! Both times I've been here a friend has raved about it and then we have come in for dinner. Parking is tough and generally caddy corner from the building in the dirt/gravel lot. There is a long walk from the entry to the dining area, passing by a beautiful jewelry shop. I ordered the salad with prawns and my friend had the ceviche. We both sat silently while we enjoyed our meal before making our way back out to I-10. My salad was just what I needed to recharge. It is a great place to stop between El Paso and Deming with nice servers and a welcoming ambiance. I look forward to many future visits when I'm in the area! read more

We visited this historic restaurant on the recommendation of someone local. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful and is in a building with more than 100 years of age. There are gift shops up front and large cages with exotic birds. We had about a 45-minute wait. The chips are the thicker ones typical in México and the salsa was fresh and had just the right amount of heat. I had a prickly pear margarita and a combination plate. May 31, 2023 - La Posta de Mesilla Restaurant (Las Cruces, NM) La Posta de Mesilla Restaurant is located in the Mesilla Plaza in the little town of Mesilla, just a mile or so south of Las Cruces. We came here for a drink and an appetizer after doing a little shopping in the town. It wasn't too busy when we arrived around four in the afternoon on a Wednesday. The restaurant is pretty good sized. When you walk in through the front door, you'll see a few little stores, including a jewelry store and a gift store. As you walk further into the restaurant, you'll see a large 10 x 10 cage with a big blue macaw (and a few other birds) in it as well as some fish tanks - one with a piranha. You feel like perhaps you just walked into a Mexican jungle. Definitely, the ambience of the restaurant is very Mexican in character, with great Mexican architecture, pictures, and Mexican themed furniture. There is a hostess in that area that normally will get you seated or get you on their reservation list. We decided just walk in to the back bar since we have been here before. There were several seats available at the bar, so that's where we sat. The bartender was very friendly and handed us a couple menus and provided us with some very tasty chips and salsa. We gave the bartender our drink order shortly thereafter. I got a prickly pear margarita and my wife got a coconut margarita. Her coconut margarita was very tasty; however, my prickly pear margarita was really not very good. It had way too much of the prickly pear syrup. I've had these drinks many times and really it just wasn't made properly. I had no taste of tequila whatsoever, which was a disappointment since he said he used the premium 1800 tequila, which is reflected in the price for the margarita - $10.50. We decided to order the beef quesadillas as our appetizer. That came out pretty quickly. It included a nice big mound of guacamole. It was very satisfying and filling. As I got about a quarter way through my prickly pear margarita I added water, and that actually improved the flavor quite a bit. I guess next time I need to tell them to go light on the prickly pear syrup. read more

My favorite Las Cruces restaurant! Passing through on our way to Albuquerque and had to make a stop here. I love all the decor and of course, the bird cage with the birds is the highlight of this restaurant's distinct charm. We came on Easter Sunday and although they were busy, we immediately got a table and promptly took care of it. The chips and salsa were so good I purchased a jar of their salsa to take home. We enjoyed the chile con queso so much, that we practically left the bowl clean. We ordered the classic Margarita and the horny Rita. They are deliciously made with fresh lemon juice. My husband enjoyed the combination plate, especially the chile con carne enchilada. I had the sour cream green chile enchiladas. I asked for the hot, and although they weren't that spicy they were flavorful. I really enjoy La Posta and will be back next time we pass by Las Cruces. The ambiance is nice considering how old the building is, the giant bird cages & fish tank in the waiting room are cool especially if you bring the kiddos. Waiting time wasn't to bad I think about 5 minutes or so. Waiter & service was really good. Definitely knew what he was doing and kept up with everyone in his section. My husband and I were staying overnight in Las Cruces for the first time, and our inn's owner suggested La Posta de Mesilla. We decided to have an early dinner to avoid the Saturday evening crowd, arriving shortly after 4 pm. There was already a long waiting list, and we were told the wait would be around 35 minutes. That turned into a 50 minute wait. The wait was made easier by the various lobby distractions, including a couple of video monitors, fish tanks, and several caged parrots. Once we were seated, service was smooth, excellent, and well timed. Chips and salsa were on the table within minutes, with drink orders taken soon after. Our orders were placed after the drinks arrived, and didn't take long. The chips were thick, crunchy, and tasty, and the salsa was mild. These are complimentary with dinner, but there's a charge for refills. My only complaint is that the chips were on the greasy side. La Posta has a very wide selection of margaritas, but I stuck with their frozen margarita, which came in a large mug. It was superb. My husband ordered wine. For main courses, we ordered chiles rellenos and sour cream enchiladas with chicken. The chiles were grill-fried, not deep-fried, and were tasty but rather greasy. The accompaniments included rice, refried beans, and Mexican slaw. Everything went very well together. My husband's enchiladas were excellent, but there was simply too much food on his plate to finish. Prices seemed quite reasonable to us, and portion sizes were good. If we are in the area again, I wouldn't hesitate to return to La Posta de Mesilla. read more

We were recommended this place by some locals and were sad to see it didn't live up to the hype. We were quoted a 35 minute wait but only had about 15 before we were called. Our server was nice enough but seemed very busy so it was tough to get his attention. The atmosphere itself was amazing. If that is important to you, consider going here. Multiple large groups were here celebrating birthdays, and with the large rooms and highly decorated walls and ceilings I understand why. Plus, we can't leave out the fish and big, beautiful birds in the waiting area. When it comes to the food, we've had better. The flavors and spices weren't present and everything was doused in cheese which was enjoyable but didn't go a long way in making it a meal we wanted to continue eating. The Marg was terrific, and I very much appreciated it was a genuine Margarita using Patron Citronge orange liquor + fresh limes ... along with a quality tequila (and no cheap sticky sweet Marg mixes). Food was terrific ... service and welcoming atmosphere was very good. Lots of customers who've been coming here for years, scattered around the space. Note: We'll try to get here more often ... it's worth the drive for us and we really need to support this business. "They get it" and we appreciate "they get it." Shout out to Andrea (spelling?) for going above and beyond as she discussed the menu, restaurant roots, the philosophy and quality process this restaurant adheres to. We miss quality food after moving to LC some 18 months ago. We enjoy ABQ dining options but need to remember la Posta is not far away. I was taken here by a new friend who raved about it. We were given chips and salsa. The salsa was really good! The guac we got.. meh. I make guac at home and I must brag that my own is much better. There was something off with it but can't put my finger on what exactly. I also ordered the Prickly Pear Margarita which was faaaantastic! I wanted another but you know why I didn't get one? The waitress never came back. Lol. By the time she did, we needed to leave and had to get the bill. Ugh. For my entree, I got three folded chicken tacos which came with rice and refried beans. This is a restaurant you come to for the atmosphere not necessarily the food. Beautiful adobe style with New Mexico decor. Our waiter was wonderful. He was very attentive, friendly, and checked on us regularly. I had the vegetarian plate, which included 1 chili relleno, 1 taco, and 1enchilada. It was OK, however, you could tell that the relleno was prepackaged/frozen. My brother had the shrimp cocktail and said it was great. All in all, you have to try it at least once for the atmosphere. This is a unique place with lots of room decorated to the nines. We had several people in our group and our server was fantastic. Being a non drinker, several people in the group seemed to enjoy the drinks they they received. Food wise, the folks in the group enjoyed what they received. For me this place was only ok. As mentioned, the place is unique, has a great atmosphere and the the service was fantastic. Food wise, the place was a no go for me. I had the Chicken Chimichanga which came with rice and beans. All the food was bland. The chicken was flavorless and the Chimichanga, even though fried, was not crispy. The rice and beans had no flavor. Given all the great review I expected more. Maybe it was a bad night, maybe it is just the way they prepare their food, but for me this is a no go. read more
