This place was my daughter's choice for her 17th birthday celebration. The food was ok. My tostada compuesta consisted of a huge chunk of fried dough with scarce green chilie meat. This is not the tostada compuseta that I had in mind. I left most of it on the table. Our water glasses were refilled once. We didn't see our waitress so we could ask for more, and we had to wave her down so we could pay our bill. I was asking the waitress if they had a dessert for the birthday girl and before I could get my words out she informed me that they didn't give out birthday desserts only a solpapia. Absolute worst food and service I've had in Las Cruces. When my wife and I arrived, I was carrying my one year old daughter and the hostess at the front asked if we needed a high chair. Not only were those the only two things in there, but the meat was overcooked and tasted like it had been sitting in a warmer for hours. The onions were almost non-existent. Normally would not write a review. The last couple of times I have eaten here the quality of food and service at this restaurants has decreased while the cost increased. I ordered breakfast. Eggs, bacon because they were out of sausage and hash brown. The bacon was burned black and was still served to me, no refills on the drinks. I ordered more salsa and there was a charge for an extra salsa. Make sure you conserve your salsa, I guess business is not that good if you're charging for an extra salsa. It's just a shame that this restaurant's food quality and service is going downhill. I use to eat here at least once a week. Chilito's is consistently good NEW Mexican food. Notice the NEW Mexican food part. There is a big difference so all you folks from California can either go to Alanberto's or learn to love our style of cooking. Chilito's represents the Mesilla Valley very well and I am a big fan. The salsa is some of my favorite in town and their crispy tacos are fantastic. I got the Country Fried Steak & Eggs this time since it was breakfast time and I am very happy with what I got. Having been to Chilitos on Foothills several times in the past few months and on every occasion having a really good meal, I have upped their rating to five stars. This Chilitos is clearly in the top three or four Mexican restaurants in town. The ambiance is nice, the service has been very good, the prices reasonable, and the food excellent. The smothered burritos have rated an "A," the sopapilla compuesta an "A-," and the chile rellenos an "A." It is clear why their business is thriving. (And I might add, this is probably the only restaurant around where you can still get a sopapilla compuesta with chile con carne since Nellie's closed its doors. I had the chicken fajitas. The meal came with complimentary chips and salsa. Chips were thick and crispy. Salsa had a lot of garlic powder and i love garlic! The chicken fajita came with a big portion for the price and was charred. The red sauce had more kick to it, but I liked the flavor of the green a little more. I enjoyed having both "Christmas" style. I also ordered a draft local blonde ale (Bosque Brewing Pistol Pete's 1888) that came out in a giant frosty mug which was a steal at only $5.50! The people running this place are a bunch of crooks. I swing by to pick up an order and paid with cash to avoid their 3% convenience fee. I hand the money over and only then does the employee tell me that they "don't have any change". I look in the cash drawer and they literally didn't have any coins in there. This information should have been communicated BEFORE I paid. I get the food and the receipt but as I was on my way out I saw they charged me the convenience fee anyway so I go back in to have the employee give me my money back. They had to get the manager and then this person went to the back office to get some coins for the fee. I asked why they didn't give me change for the order when they clearly had coins available but the manager said they "don't have change all the time". What a load of BS. Just a bunch of excuses to gouge customers as much as they can. I will not be back and will definitely not recommend this place to anyone. read more

Date night with Emilio. Came on a Monday. Love the ambiance and he mentioned it felt like we were on a vacation eating good food. Emilio ordered the chicken flautas, ordered to top it off with Chile con queso but they were all out ! Bummer. But he thought it was still tasty. It's a lot of sauce on a smothered chile relleno with beans on the inside. Each has its own taste and tonight I preferred the green. Well priced, I had a 24 oz beer, chips/salsa and this giant plate burrito (w beans and rice) for $15. Even with a tip under $20. The salsa is very tasty. Thinner and more like a dip sauce. It was bright and full of chile flavor. I'd put it on just about anything. The chips were a tad chewy but that could be the rain they have been having for days. The location on Foothills is near my house so that's a plus! The food was good...the service was sub-par. I'm all about chips and salsa at a Mexican restaurant...and keep 'em coming! We asked our waiter for a chip refill and didn't get it until after our food arrived. And we didn't get our utensils with the meal and had to wait several minutes for our waiter to bring them. These aren't deal breakers but I'll probably wait to go back until I can make it for breakfast because I know they do make legit huevos con chorizo. read more

This is the most Tex-Mex place I have eaten at since moving to Las Cruces. Sure you can get red or green on most anything, and the green is pretty tasty. But then they cover everything with melty cheese. To me that's more Tex-Mex than authentic Mexican fare. This being my first time here I decided on the combo with 1 Enchilada, 1 Relleno, 1 Ground Beef Taco and rice and beans. The taco was crispy and I had no complaints. And really, since I like Tex-Mex, I had none about the rest of the plate. It was all pretty indistinguishable under the chile and cheese. So I just cut into it, removing the poblano stem from the relleno, and ate. You can create your own combo plate with 3 or 4 items. Four items around $12. It's one of the few places in town where I saw fajitas on the menu. They have a cantina and I understand an early morning happy hour for folks who work that 3rd shift. Salads, kids and senior menu, burgers, steaks and breakfast served ALL day! Yeah! Gotta love breakfast burritos and Huevos Rancheros and pancakes and all that! This location has a decent patio and I would imagine a lovely sunset view. They cater. It's not the best Mexican food in town. But it's not the worst. Went to Chilitos with some friends and it was really great Mexican food and a great price point. I had a Chile relleno plate with a side of beans and rice. The plate was exactly how it should have been and as I live in Denver now it sure is awesome to get back to Cruces and have some wonderful mexican food that I grew up on.
