La Placita is a hidden little spot in Middletown. The owners are so very sweet here and put their heart into all of the food they prepare. Some of my favorite dishes are the veggie quesadillas, steak enchilada and the birria tacos. The birria tacos ARE SO GOOD!!! La Placita is a Mexican market and eatery a bit off the main drag in Middletown. If you need some specialty Mexican groceries, they would have a larger selection of products than would be an available in the Mexican section of most grocery stores. I was there to try their tacos, however. I had pastor and Bistec. Authentic taqueria style. They were good, but not top tier in CT for me. The textures and flavors were all good, but I prefer these tacsos at some other.CT places, including at least one nearby spot. 4 Stars read more

I was really hoping for a good meal at La Placita in Middletown, but the visit was a letdown. The prices are way too high for what you actually get. I ordered a burrito, and it was mostly packed with rice instead of meat, which made it bland and not worth the cost. On top of that, the staff in charge came across as unfriendly and not very polite, which made the whole experience even more disappointing. There are plenty of other places in the area where you can get better food and better service for the same--or even less--money. I won't be returning. read more

Unfortunately, I'm not sure where these positive reviews are coming from, but this was the most overpriced, low-quality Mexican food I've had in a while. I'm a big fan of authentic Mexican found in bodegas and pulperías. I'm forever chasing a pollo asada torta that might rival that of Reyes Deli on 4th Ave in Brooklyn. Alas, not yet. The $16 torta was bland--the Milanese was cooked to oblivion, the cheese was rubbery, the beans under seasoned, no fresh veg, no crunchy marinated carrots, the onions and lettuce were wilted, and the bread was stale and crumbly. It really made me angry. The jalapeños weren't event hot. I can't believe they'd charge more than $8 for this thing. The Birria was mildly palatable and substantially filled with salt and lime and lots of green salsa added. 2 stars is for them. The rice pudding was watery and the rice was chalky and undercooked. Not creamy whatsoever. The stalest, crumbliest concha ever. So disappointing. read more

This place is definitely a small hidden gem in Middletown! We ordered for lunch and had a simple order of tacos, half with steak and the other half with chicken. We also got them "American style" which means with lettuce, tomato, cheese and sour cream, plus onion and cilantro. So, SO tasty! The woman who worked behind the counter was incredibly helpful and made sure we had everything we needed. It's a very modest location, without any elaborate decoration going on. It's kind of like walking into a big room that is quite filled up. But the food makes up for what it lacks in visual appeal. They also sell Mexican products that you can get right there at the location. It's right up by the post office, so if you find yourself close, stop by! read more

Yummmmmmm, I'm writing this review as I eat. It's THAT good. I have been craving authentic Mexican flavors but feeling pretty defeated as I don't feel like driving to Wallingford or further south. There's another place in town but I found it disappointing. So on a whim, I call up La Placita and order a bunch of items, tacos, a quesadilla, rice and beans, chips and guacamole. I get there and it's kind of store with a few tables to sit and eat? I get home and the food is so good, I'm dancing in my seat! 5 stars! Will be my new go to! read more

Hands down the best Mexican food I have ever had. Delicious flavors with what can only be described as true authentic Mexican cuisine, the food is piping hot upon pickup and almost always done on time. The enchiladas, the torta (sandwich) and the burrito were all some of the best Mexican I have ever had bar none. Another convenient addition to the amazing food is the small little market they have set up inside so you can purchase authentic Mexican ingredients for cooking at home! The cheese quesadilla was the best I ever had outside of Mexico. The guacamole was fresh and good. I heard this place was a hidden gem and that was no joke. There are two tables if you want to dine in. Parking is across from the street in a parking lot full of rocks. I didn't like parking on the rocks but the food is so good I'll be back. It's looks like a Bodega, they sell groceries, food, drinks, ice cream and more. It was quiet in there. Everyone was nice. read more

Incredible! This little gem of a Mexican joint is wonderful. The quality of food they pump out is packed with flavor. I just got the steak burrito and was thoroughly impressed. Loaded with chopped-up steak, rice, and all the fixings and then smothered with a delicious queso. Also, you have to ask for the spicy salsa....it left me in tears of pain. lol. Really nice people there too and everything is made to order. There is a small parking lot across the street. The place also is a little Mexican grocery store with all the authentic ingredients, Mexican candy, and Mexican Coke! read more

La Placita is one of those hole-in-the-wall places where anything you order is truly authentic and chances are you'll want to go back. It gives off a real mom and pop energy and I can certainly say I will be returning for more of this fantastic Mexican cuisine. I ordered the steak nachos and the Al pastor burrito, both of which were very flavorful. The nachos came with a generous amount of steak, as well as queso oaxaca, queso fresco, sour cream, beans, pico de gallo and some carrots. The portion sizes are extremely fair. The burrito was generously filled with everything you would expect in a burrito and the Al pastor with the pineapple was fantastic. I'm not entirely sure what the sauce was that the burrito was served over, but it had a cheesy taste and was very good. The only part of La Placita that was a little strange was the very laid back aspect of the menu. The items offered were all written on a chalkboard without prices and without any description of what meats were offered for each dish. The young lady at the front was helpful in answering any questions my friend and I had though, and there is an online menu you can look through as well, but it was just a little different than your typical restaurant. La Placita also offers a range of shelved items and drinks to purchase. Between the options available throughout the small restaurant and the authentic and delicious options to eat, I can absolutely recommend La Placita to anyone looking for a flavorful Mexican meal. read more

Really good, authentic food in a casual market with a couple of tables. I had the quesadilla al pastor - very good. My husband had the al pastor burrito which he absolutely loved. It was huge and covered in the most delicious queso sauce I've ever tasted. Many of their tortillas are homemade, and the store sells some great Mexican products from candy to dried peppers and spices. You can order at the counter (only took about ten minutes for the food to come out) or you can order online. read more

Tried la placita today for the first time, its a hole in the wall type of place, but don't let that fool you the food is great. I ordered the steak burritto, it was really good and tasted very fresh. Fair warning the spicy salsa that comes on the side is hot! At $11.00 dollars, it was priced about right to other Mexican restaurants in the area. However, I do wish it came with some tortilla chips. Family and I came here the other day for some dinner. For us being Californians, this is legit as it gets down to the homemade tortillas. Everything was seasoned to perfection and reminded us of some good authentic Mexican food back home. Tacos aren't double tortillas and the salsa is super hot. Asked them to make one of each (steak chicken and cheese for enchiladas with one of each sauce, they said they could not do it. It was good nonetheless but I've had better elsewhere read more
