I've been three times in the last three years, despite not living in the country. It's a little hectic and hard to navigate for me to love unreservedly, but there's no doubt that it offers a plethora of good food. I can't think of anything quite like it in the U.S., but if you've been to the Harrods food halls or department stores in Asia, you might recognize the dense arrangement of mini restaurants and food purveyors, spread out across several floors. My first visit was for an hour-long hangout with friends, and we had a hell of a time finding a place to sit down while we got a coffee or snack. We went up and down the escalator scouting things out, but almost every spot with seating was overrun on a Saturday afternoon. We ended up at an okay pan-Asian spot called Rice Street between lunch and dinner service, getting boba and sheltering from the chaos. I went two days in a row on my more recent trip to Paris, first for a Glace BACHIR pop-up, and then to get an easy on-the-go lunch before getting sucked into the broader maw of the main Galeries Lafayette. It was crowded both days, the ground floor crawling with people. Both the ice cream and my sandwich, from Chez Meunier, were delicious. I haven't quite figured out Galeries Lafayette Gourmet, but it's a worthwhile destination if you want to run around trying pastries and chocolates and other French delectables. I picked the citron (lemon) flavor and highly enjoyed it! The cream puff was filled with lemon flavor and was a light, yet satisfying dessert. You'll need to make sure to try cream puffs in Paris and Odette has some great ones. I regret only getting one cream puff! Bonus points for being convenient located, just steps away from the Notre-Dame Cathedral.

I had read…read moreabout this shop in David Leibovitz's newsletter, and I really wanted to try their pâtes de fruits while in Paris. I went inside and a very kind lady came to help me. I told her I wanted to look at the confiserie and she kindly offered to let me try one. I tried the passion fruit one and it was wonderful! This is not a treat that's easily found in the US, so I grabbed a box to bring home. The shelf life is about half a year, so these are perfect to give as gifts! Beautiful shop and excellent service. Will definitely be back one day to try the chocolates one day.

The tea shop on the second floor is absolutely adorable and really should be on any pastry-lover's bucket list (ditto if you are into tea houses). Calm, refined, and civilized, it embodies everything that "tea" should be. Mom ordered a pot of tea and she deemed it delicious (she is often disappointed by hot tea--it is rare that we find an establishment that makes it properly). I ordered the hot chocolate with chantilly, and it filled me with mirth. (Warning: it is a dessert unto itself. This is not the insipid cocoa that comes from powder in an envelope. Imagine a cup of chocolate truffle, and you are about right.) We both ordered the plaisir sucrée, and now I need to go back to Paris to take a pastry class.
