When the gentleman from Venice behind the bar suggests a sauce for the lobster ravioli just say, "yes, please." You won't be disappointed. La Onda is a fun and incredibly unassuming joint. Pizza is super good -- great crust and lots of variety -- but I think the macaroni is the standout. The lobster ravioli, no exaggeration, was incredible with a sage brown butter sauce with cherry tomatoes and zucchini. Tulum is funny kinda. Or rather the people that visit. People go to Tulum (a heavily touristy spot) thinking that their USD is saving them money. What they don't account for is that in Tulum, that market everything at USDA prices. Here in the US, you easily pay about $15 for a pizza and guess what they charge here for los guerros? 300 pesos. That's around 15 USD. If you go outside of Tulum, you'll easily find food that's actually cheap. For an example we found Mexican pizza spots in PDC or around outside of Cancún that was only about 200 pesos. We found tacos for only 15 pesos (75¢), while the tacos in Tulum were $1. But I digress, just pointing out a point. The 4 stars is for the service, which was decent and the food, which was good. That is what we paid for this Méxicana pizza. It was good, not great. We came down from PDC to see this place and Matcha Mama. I wouldn't come back here, especially since it's over crowded with people not wearing masks. Seriously, only me and my fiancée were wearing masks in Tulum. read more

I would say "really good pizza on earth, and the best place to eat it!" Loved their thin crust with the char from the brick oven. Their pizza sauce was on point- just the right amount of sauce - full of tomato/garlic/basil goodness. Our first pizza was so yummy, we had to go for a second with pepperoni- and it was great, also made a delicious breakfast the next morning. Pizza is what they boast, but my favorite part of the meal was the calamari Caesar salad. The calamari were crispy and I enjoyed the creative Caesar salad play. I haven't had a fried calamari before with a caesar dressing, but I'm definitely taking that idea home. All in all, a great evening of yummy food, good service and don't forget your mosquito spray, especially in the evening- as with any of the open air restaurants down there. Their sign says "best pizza on earth" I respect the bravado. Didn't hold up. But that's not my qualm. They made me a pizza and gave me the ordered beverages per request. My concern came when they brought the bill and told me the difference between pesos and dollars was different than the exchange rate. By a lot. I asked for clarification and they said that's what it is. I showed them the current rate of exchange and they mumbled something about taxes and walked away expecting that I pay the amount. I was fine to pay in pesos but they insisted I pay in usd and the wrong amount. Since I didn't have any local cash, I was forced to pay the amount that was different than I had ordered by. I wouldn't use a harsh word like "extortion" on a review. But maybe a bit of misleading and playing to the potential ignorance of travelers. In general it's best to pay in local currency. Though you'll be hard pressed to find an ATM in resort row that provides anything but US dollars. And now I know why. read more

My boyfriend and I were riding bikes down the road and noticed their sign for "Best Pizza on Earth." We were both craving pizza and decided to pull over and give it a try. Below is what we got: Coconut Shrimp Appetizer - 4 Stars. Flaky and yummy, very heavy on the coconut which I loved. Margherita Pizza - 5 Stars. Light and flaky crust, super thin, and amazingly delicious. Pepperoni Pizza - 5 Stars. The perfect amount of saltiness from the meat, balanced perfectly with the cheese/sauce proportion, served on fresh crust that was just fired in the oven. What made this place stand out was the service, it was beyond amazing and very attentive. After we finished dinner they gave us a complimentary shot of Tequila which was so awesome. Laura & Matteo are some of the best people/business owners I've ever met. They served us the most reasonably priced & refreshing drinks in Tulum and the bacon pizza was absolutely delicious. We came back the following day because the vibes were so warming and positive, just had the absolute best time hanging out. They even offered me some insect repellant that's how sweet this amazing couple is! I would love to go back to Tulum just to hang out at this bar restaurant again. We came across this spot after a full day at the beach when we were really craving pizza and pasta. We drove around looking for a few spots, but stumbled across La Onda. Flor was our waitress and she was really kind and welcoming. We ordered guacamole, 2 pizzas (Margherita and Hurucan), and a pasta. Everything was so good. The pizza was freshly made in the wood fired oven, and everything was fresh and flavorful. Portions were great as well. Flor and the staff were really friendly and kind. La Onda was our only dining experience on the beach road and most expensive of our trip, but definitely worth it! The atmosphere is really relaxed; tucked back into the jungle side of the road. They claim to have the best pizza, which IDK about that, but it was very good! We started with an order of bruschetta which was fresh and had the perfect amount of olive oil with the tomatoes and a nice drizzle of balsamic vinegar. Excellent experience. The Pizza, now not the best pizza on earth, was delicious and exactly what we were looking for. My fiancé had the margherita and I had the pepperoni covered in crushed red pepper. Crust was solid, sauce was tomato-y (could've been a little more flavorful) but delicious all the same. The owner was there and introduced himself, offering a free shot of tequila, which we did together. He suggested that the pasta, homemade, was really the way to go...although we didn't have a chance to verify. The place was clean, and the service was very attentive. My husband and I went here on our honeymoon. One star review because if you're using USD they tweak the conversion rate to rip you off. We noticed right away their total came to about $15 more than the conversion rate calculation we had been using our entire trip. We googled the Pesos : USD conversion rate to double check, used our calculators to do the correct conversion, and tried to talk with our waiter about it. He became very cold and wouldn't budge; kept insisting the conversion rate was $4 less than what it really was (meaning our bill would be higher). This business banks on profiting from perceived ignorant white millennials vacationing in Tulum not knowing how to operate conversions. If you find yourself here, please be aware, and speak up if this happens to you. read more

The pizza truly is great!! And seeing some of the positive reviews on here gives me hope that it just might be a great choice. But if you value the evenings of your family vacation as we do, I recommend you choose another place. It's OK when businesses make mistakes when they take ownership of it and try and make it better. That's how this started for us. They made a mistake which turned into watching everyone else (that came in after us) get their food. We've all been there before. When we brought it to the manager's attention, he took ownership, offered to comp our dinners and promised to make things right. He said he wanted us to "leave happy" and to his credit we were encouraged. Unfortunately, this is where it all went downhill to the point of being quite offensive. After another 30 minutes of watching another round of guests get served before us, we brought it back to the manager's attention. It was clear at this point they had forgotten to even start making our pizzas. Oops! Frustrating, but we'll live :) After another 30 minutes, we wanted to leave. One can only hear "2 more minutes" so many times. My wife went to speak with the manager to let him know we wanted to leave and if the pizzas were done to please box them up. Another man came out to speak with my wife (not sure if he was the owner or another manager). He put his arm around her and offered her shots of tequila -- to the point that our 14 year old son was offended. He threw his staff under the bus while pouring more shots of tequila. And when my wife mentioned that I was upset and and wanted to leave, he said "well I'm sure you can make him happy later". Umm... are you kidding me? That's not even close to OK. The pizza truly was great. And we walked out carrying 5 boxes of great pizza after a rather surprising and simply not OK experience. read more

We ate here for lunch and came back for dinner. The pizza was delicious. For dinner we had ravioli and you could tell it was homemade. We were surprised that it was so good. Horrible service and mediocre pizza. The only bad meal we had in Tulum. Waited a ridiculous amount of time for menus, service, drinks and our food. My wife found the owner drunk and smoking in the women's bathroom, which was beyond filthy. Our waitress insisted that we pay her a 20% tip, regardless of the shitty service. For emphasis, she took her pen and circled what the 20% amount would be, as if I needed to be educated. She also told us that they didn't take any credit cards but then told me they did, but that I had to pay her tip in cash. Sadly, I'm not sure it's fair to blame this one restaurant for our experience. I think it just sums up what's happened to Tulum - an over crowded and over developed tourist destination that is no longer sustainable. 3 of the 4 of us who ate here ended up with a 3 day stomach virus that started less than 48 hours later. Can't prove that we got it at the restaurant; but it was pretty filthy - from the chairs to the table, to the silverware, and of course, the bathrooms. Go somewhere else - there are plenty of other options on the beach road and most of the businesses truly want your business and value customers. read more

A great date choice with amazing pizza! It's made in a wood burning outdoor oven. The sauce is tangy and rich. The crust is light and thin. You can build your own or choose one of the creations on the the menu. The outdoor seating with strings of white lights creates a romantic ambiance. The natural wood tables and gravel floor's very Tulum. They also have appetizers and a great drink menu. This restaurant has better pizza than most places in LA. read more

The worst meal we had. We ate here once in Tulum. They claim to have the best pizza in Tulum. We were seated at the back near to the side road where there was a bad smell. The garlic bread for starter was just sliced bread toasted with the most flavourless garlic butter ever. My wife had a pizza which was very average but far better compared to my pasta which consisted of a lump of congealing inedible bland pasta on a plate with no attempt at presentation. My wife had to eat mine as I didn't want any scene with the waiting staff. I needn't have worried as service was very off hand. Stay away. read more

I loved everything about la Onda. I can personally say that my girlfriend and I went two night in a row because we liked it so much. The service was superb and the food was beyond great. The first night at the restaurant I had their chicken with mushroom sauce and a side of rice and frijoles. I can say that it was delicious and exceeded my expectations. The second night I had their Mexican chicken dish. It was chicken stuffed with goat cheese and spinach and a side of rice and frijoles. I can honestly say that it was THE BEST chicken dish I have ever had and I've had many of them. My girlfriend has their pear salad twice since she liked it so much. Some of the previous reviews I read were kind of misleading so I took it upon myself to make sure everyone knows how amazing La Onda was. Also don't forget to have one of their smoothies, they were extremely refreshing and tasty. Everything tasted very fresh.
