If you're looking to write a comedy pilot script, I highly recommend Jackie Geary's pilot class. Besides being a successful comedic actor, Jackie's comedy writing has been optioned at Warner Brothers and TBS. I was thrilled to have an opportunity to learn from someone that currently works in the business. I went from only a log line to a 35 page sitcom script that I'm elated with in 2 months. It's an enormous amount of work, but if you're willing to put in the effort, Jackie will be there with you every step of the way. She teaches invaluable tools of comedy that help you develop a solid pitch document, outline and finally the script. I learned a ton in a short amount of time. I moved to LA a year ago tomorrow, (I am originally from Missouri) and I was terrified amd excited about all of the changes in my life I was experiencing. I knew I needed to get in to an acting class, but I was scared. I have heard horror stories and been warned about being scammed by acting classes and companies who would promise to help your career-- but instead would take your money and run. I had been searching for months trying to find the perfect fit for the foundation of training I already had. Then I found LA OTC... I started with their intro class and was immediately put at ease. What I loved most about the class is that we are filmed and critiqued TWICE in each class, which a lot of classes I found didn't even put you on film... and that is what we are out here for! Today was my last day of the How to Be Funny On Camera course with Jackie Geary, and I truly have nothing but amazing things to say about it. My classmates and I were even sentimental and sad that it felt like it ended so soon (after 12 weeks!). Another thing I loooove is that the class sizes are limited (no more than 5 people for this particular course), so we really get specialized attention. I have taken a lot of different sitcom-based classes. I'm familiar with all the character types and archetypes of comedies and some of the technical tricks and tips of how to navigate the world of sitcom. This is by far the most challenging sitcom class I have ever taken, which I appreciate! Jackie has a unique perspective on comedy and is so talented in the way she is able to break down characters and scripts. She does a great way of not sugarcoating and giving great notes to her students. Right to the point - ohmygoodness - Jackie Geary's 12-week comedy technique class is amazing. And that's the point - technique. You think you may be funny but until you can put words and concepts around what you're doing, you're really only seeing the half of what you can do (if you're even getting half out of yourself). To tighten up and finesse - and to even know what to do at all - takes your work from "cute" to "HAHAHHAHAHA". It's a joy. Jackie has a system for figuring out what's the best/right character for a scene and then build your performance from there, all guided by the tools she has - and there are many. Well, I suggest you show up and take the class, don't take yelps word for it. Show up and get ready, what Jamison is teaching will change the way you work. That's how I felt, so I signed up for the 12 week Drama Technique class. I've taken plenty of classes around town, I hold a BFA, L.A is my third market, I am a Sag-Aftra and AEA member, I studied at Steppenwolf West, Brian Reise, Anthony Meindl, with the late Carolyne Barry, Killian's workshop, Jamison Reeves, probably done a hundred CD workshops...I thought I knew plenty. I do know plenty, all that training is great, but it wasn't helping me book on-camera. Scene study, Meisner, improv, cold read, that's all valuable, but these twelve weeks, I'm telling you, this is what will help you in the rooms that matter most. The casting offices! Jamison and Tamika are exactly who should be teaching, they're working actors ( I think in the 12 weeks, they both booked at least 2 if not 3 shows) who do this everyday, work like this everyday. There's something to be said about training under a working actor. Why? Well, first off, they "get" what you are going through, as they are as well. Second, they know what Casting Directors and other decision maker expect from you in an audition situation and on-set. They know the demands of this Industry and how to be successful. Lastly, they know how the Industry is evolving and how you can keep with the times. I've never understood why anyone would study with someone who hasn't witness a Casting or gone to one themselves, in the last couple years...decades...but people do...hello bitter Acting Teacher. YOU WON'T FIND THAT HERE! When you study with Jamison at LAOTC you come away with a strong artistic and practical foundation of how to audition for the camera and how to work on-set. It's not a group therapy session, and it's not esoteric... if you want that, go somewhere else. Also, if you want to worship an "acting guru" or pay to have smoke blown up your arse, again, go somewhere else. He is not only honest but supportive, encouraging and a very positive influence to be around. If you want to work- and I mean WORK, as in, "act for a living", you owe it to yourself to check out LA OTC! The teachers are working actors, which means so much to me after being in LA for a while. There are so many people in this town who call themselves teachers, and put out a shingle, but they don't necessarily have the IMDb credits to back them up. Not the case here- Jamison and Jackie have been on all types of tv shows, movies and commercials, they know first hand what they're talking about. However, unlike some teachers, they never make it about themselves. It's always about you and the work. Wonderfully refreshing in a city of egos ;) Jamison is a terrific teacher. He's kind and very compassionate, but he will push you to be your best. The material is presented in a way that is really easy to understand, digest and apply. None of the abstruse acting teacher language here- just clear-cut, intelligent discussion. Most important to a lot of actors is how 'safe' they feel in the space. Safe to make mistakes, safe to be vulnerable and safe to try new things. With Jamison's "Fail Boldly" attitude, I always felt safe, and felt as though I didn't make mistakes but rather I learned what didn't work and what did work. They offer terrific intro classes that are only $5! There's no reason to not at least check them out. And when you do, you'll see why they have glowing 5-star reviews. Jamison's on camera classes are really top notch training for LA actors. I personally came from a theatre background and didn't realize that it was really a different skill set for on camera work. It is of paramount importance for the actor to see first hand how they are coming across, their look, their ticks, and Jamison does such a great job guiding you through analyzing your performance and helping you to make the most interesting and solid choices. His approach to audition technique is also very specific and helpful as it comes from a well seasoned (and working) actor who attends casting director workshops regularly. Where to begin... If you're out there looking for an "acting class" this probably isn't what you're looking for. And I mean that in the best possible way. I've passed on class after class, knowing that what I needed was not silly exercises, but real, practical knowledge that had to do with the down and dirty technical details that go with on camera acting. In order to know that your performance is hitting home, you need to know what it looks like from the other side of the camera. This course is designed specifically to do just that. Coming from a theater background with virtually no experience in film, this course was precisely what I was hoping it would be, and then some. Jamison is a marvelous teacher, with excellent feedback, knowledge, and ability. He knows that you won't succeed in every risk you take, but in those moments you do fail, he will enable you to rise higher than you were before. His "put it all out there" "say what I want to say" attitude is amazing, and more importantly, fits for the industry we work in. You can't bullshit your way through auditions and expect to see great results. If something doesn't work, fix it. In my mind, there is no class more useful for any actor that is looking to work in the film industry. The class, and the teacher, are gems, hidden away from the public, and while I wish EVERYONE knew about it, I am also incredibly grateful to have experienced it as an intimate setting. Wrapped up the 12 week on-camera class last week with Jamison. In my still relatively short time out here in L.A., I must say this class definitely ranks as one of the most beneficial decisions that I have made as far as skill development is concerned. Technique, improv, and scene study classes do NOT ever touch on the skills, techniques and nuances that are needed in order to display a level of competence in the short time you have to make that first impression when in the room. I still have a lot of work to get to the level of where I want and expect to be, but this class was a great first step in getting to where I want to go. Finding a trustworthy on camera coach can be challenging in this over saturated market. I've certainly taken my fair share of classes that didn't fit. I am a classically trained theater actor who simply lacked the working hours in front of a camera. For me there was something lost in translation from stage to set. For all of my big auditions over the past year and a half I go to Jamison to prepare. His understanding of scenes is always precise, direct and clear which saves me hours of prep time! This is LITERALLY the only place you need to study at if you want to be a successful LA actor. Scene study is everywhere, but to find a place that actually gives you time to grow on camera with the tools you need to be on screen, is invaluable! They also spend time with you. The classes are small, you get to perform how you would if it were an audition, then watch each scene and get feedback, then you get to do it again, watch that scene and receive notes on the change. You have to watch yourself on screen to make changes. LA On Camera gives you the time and attention to detail that no one else I've studied with has been able to. They train you in every aspect. Getting deep into the story, making strong choices, hitting your mark, how to change a performance from a wide to a close up and how to perform and move in a way that you will actually be captured by the camera. Just finished the Co-Star class taught by Jackie and Jamison. It was brilliant. Two weeks of drama, two weeks of comedy, all focused on your co-star audition. They are both booking actors and you work on real sides from current shows on television. You work on-camera 3-6 times each class and get specific feedback. I'm really picky about acting classes. I've trained a lot, in LA and elsewhere. And I'm a teacher myself, so I pay close attention to the quality of the teaching I receive. I stumbled onto LA OTC's Co-Star Intensive through... Twitter, I think. Co-Star auditions are this weird little sub-category of acting work. How do you make a strong, interesting choice with one to five lines, when the scene usually isn't (and shouldn't be) about you? So I signed up, hoping to get answers. The class was straight up excellent. Jamison and Jackie are both fun, supportive, engaging teachers, comfortable with folks in the class with very little experience and those like me who've been at it for quite a while. I got great, practical approaches to the work from them, and each student got 1-3 takes on 5-6 scenes per class, which is a ton of time to work. The class was really reasonably priced, the other students were lovely, my whole experience was great. I rarely write reviews, but they definitely earned it.
