It's difficult for me to provide a low rating for La Nonna - however, I was very disappointed with the food. My partner and I couldn't eat two of the three dishes we ordered at the restaurant this evening. We started with some bread - I smothered a few slices in olive oil. We ordered the Caesar Salad first - you can see from the attached picture, it doesn't look that good - it's mostly 'white' Romaine lettuce - not sure where the green part was!! I tasted the salad and almost had to remove the lettuce from my mouth! It was so bitter - sour - an overwhelming acidic taste - it appeared to be too much lemon juice. We couldn't figure it out - we returned the salad. We ordered a side of meatballs next in a marinara sauce. They tasted fine and were tender - the marinara was good as well. Next up, we shared the seafood special of the night - Linguini Pescatore - pasta with mussels, calamari and shrimp. The dish came - we both tasted the pasta and came to the same conclusion - over salted to a degree which I've never experienced. I took another taste as it was hard to believe there was that much sodium in this dish. It was inedible - I tasted a shrimp - same overwhelming salty taste. I thought it must be the white sauce as everything in that bowl had absorbed it. We left two dishes uneaten - I notice a patron behind me whose partner had pasta with red sauce - completely clean plate - while his partner left her dish full of pasta with white sauce. My guess, the tomato based marinara was fine, but the white sauce wasn't. It's hard to believe the chef cooking those sauces would serve something laden with so much salt - I'm hopeful it was a mistake. However, the Caesar Salad was also horrible - my guess - it's a hit or miss restaurant. One which I'll avoid in the future. read more

La Nonna came highly recommended from a few Philly friends, so being the newbie to town I had to stop in for some homemade pasta! I was meeting a friend on South St. to check out another nearby bar, so this was the perfect meet up spot. The service was friendly and we were quickly seated without a reservation during a Thursday dinner slot. We heard about the specials and I had to try the blood orange Italian soda as a refreshment. I had the lingine and clams with lump crab meat which was spectacular. The noodles were so light and the sauce was perfectly flavored and also had a light touch to it. We also shared the lemon cake which was the perfect sweetness level and a solid ending to our meal. The homemade ciabatta bread and pickled veggies served as another great appetizer touch. BYOB! Location: 2nd and South Street - Plenty of street parking available. Inside/Decor: The space is small and intimate. You might have to squeeze past tables, but it adds to the cozy vibe. Service: The service was excellent! I visited on a Friday night, so it took a little longer to be seated and take our order, but the staff was friendly and attentive. Food: Generous portions! Most entrees can easily be shared between two people, so keep that in mind when ordering. Food Breakdown: APPS: -Burrata: I enjoyed this appetizer. The portion was great, and the cheese tasted fresh. -Roman Artichokes: These are perfect if you enjoy a tangy sauce. I liked them a lot. PASTA: -Linguine Shrimp Fra Diavolo: I highly recommend this. The shrimp were jumbo, and the pasta was cooked perfectly. The sauce was just right. My only wish is that they had sprinkled some Parmigiano Reggiano on top. -Eggplant Parmesan: This was nothing special. We ordered it because the one we initially wanted wasn't available, so it didn't stand out much. DESSERT: -Panna Cotta: The thickest panna cotta I've ever had. Easily one of the loveliest restaurant experience I have had in Philly. This place is small, cozy, feels like family business. The appetizers were all spectacular - burrata, caesar salad and calamari with marinara sauce are all delicious. We ordered so much appetizers that we are actually half full when the pasta came out. I love my fettuccine bolognese, it came out piping hot and so flavorful. My bf loves his lasagna too. They are BYOB so bring a bottle of wine! The staffs are very pleasant and attentive. Loved the food and service was great. We got burrata and calamari for appetizers. Both excellent. The linguini with crab and shrimp was my favorite. The eggplant parmigiana was also very yummy. Where do I begin with this absolute gem!! Everything about La Nonna was on point. Appetizers and entrees were delicious. The burrata was tasty and perfect for sharing. The bolognese had one of the best sauces i've ever tried, perfect balance of tangy with strong hits of fresh tomato. And the portions?!? Insane for the price. This might have been the first time I left an italian spot in philly with a takeout box! The service was honestly one of the absolute best i've seen. Our server was incredibly sweet and attentive!! Cancel your flight to Italy and come here instead!!!! What a gem in the city. First of all, the atmosphere is so romantic and the lighting, decor, and music makes you feel like you just transported to Italy. The food was phenomenal. Every dish was mouth watering and even though i'm so full, i'm still thinking about how soon i can eat my leftovers. The gnocchi bolognese was the best dish by far, the chicken parm being right behind it with their rich marina sauce. The ricotta gnocchi in pink sauce with shrimp was extremely dense and in my opinion is better to share since it's so heavy but the blush sauce was heavenly and had me taking a spoon to it. The caesar salad was a little anchovy heavy for my liking but it was still good. I will definitely be back. read more

Came here after originally wanting sushi and not wanting to wait 2 hours at the Royal Izakaya. We found it walking around South Street and came in with no reservations and were seated within 5 minutes. It is BYOB, so we could not have any wine as we were not prepared, but I guess it really saved us some money. The BEST Lasagna I've ever had anywhere! Wow, the past was cooked to perfection and the sauce was amazing with nice chunks of meat. Great portion, great texture! My wife had the Cacio e Pepe which was also delicious! Very small cozy ambiance, no credit cards accepted but they do take Venmo, so that helped. read more

The food was great and a nice portion. I got lasagna, its meat sauce was really good. The lasagna was layered well. My date got gnocchis and said the texture of the noodles were perfect. 4/5 sfor the food. Depending on what time you come the place can fill up so make sure you have a reservation. If you do just walk-in it needs to be right when the restaurant opens. We had tried to walk in in the past and couldn't get a table. This place is BYOB, they only take cash or Venmo. read more

We had an early reservation on Saturday at La Nonna and it did not disappoint! The servers were very friendly and attentive. Since it is Valentine's Day weekend they had a special menu. We started with the arugula salad which was super fresh and a great portion. I had the linguine with shrimp and crab and my boyfriend had the wild boar ragu. Both were absolutely delicious! Great portions as well. I hate when I receive a very small portion of pasta and that was not the case at La Nonna's. I had a small portion to bring home but ended up finishing it later that night! All of the pasta is homemade as well which was great and one of the reasons I had wanted to try it! The place itself is very quaint and Italian feeling. There were a few things in the restaurant that bothered me, there is an ATM right in the middle of everything and there was an extension cord under our table. There was also a shelving area next to our table with little decorations on it and the light was kind of shining into my eyes. Overall, would definitely go back! read more

We had the fresh fish Mediterranean style(red sauce, onions, olives) For me- this would have been more enjoyable with chicken and pasta. But it was tasty.
