Rather than charging me for a battery, they suggested I call AAA for a battery replacement since it was still under warranty and then they would check everything else out to figure out where the problem was. After the battery got swapped it was obvious that it was my alternator. They got it fixed within the day! A couple of months later, my car broke down in the same way it did previously. I called them up to explain the issue again, and had the car towed out to them. I wasn't sure if the fix would be covered under warranty, but once a new alternator was installed, they told me everything was covered and I was good to go. Haven't had any issues with it since. Their hours were extremely convenient and I was able to arrive with my car this morning at 8 AM. They were quick, friendly, informative, and beyond efficient. Most of all, they were honest. They thoroughly check the entire car in record time, and took pictures and highly detailed notes of everything they checked and inspected, sending all updates both bad and good over text and email to keep me informed and updated in real-time. They were quickly able to discover that the other shop not only did not do what they said they were going to do or anything I asked, but they never actually did anything whatsoever. I had a great experience with Alex at Value Auto Repair. I originally reached out through Yelp, and he was responsive and answered all of my questions. His pricing was significantly better than what the dealership quoted me, but what really stood out wasn't just the price--it was his honesty. I came in with a humming noise that I believed was a bad wheel bearing but was unsure. Alex was upfront from the beginning after making the same diagnosis and even encouraged me to get quotes from other mechanics if it made me feel more comfortable so I could make sure I was getting a fair deal. That kind of confidence and transparency is hard to find. When I arrived, he was able to get my car in within about 30 minutes to diagnose it. While the part was being delivered, I went to lunch, and once I came back, he had the wheel bearing replaced in about 45 minutes. Before I left, he took the time to show me both the old and new wheel bearings, explaining how they worked and letting me hear and feel the difference. I really appreciated him taking the time to educate me instead of just handing me a bill. One thing I noticed while I was waiting was how many customers came in who clearly knew Alex. I did some research and chose Max Auto Service in La Mesa, the owners Roger, head mechanic and his wife Maria that runs the office. I called and Maria is so very professional, knowledgeable and personable that I immediately felt confident in choosing them. My car was towed in, the job was done, no issues and my car ran great. About a month later the serpentine belt came off which caused the car to overheat and for once I didn't have to Google for mechanics. I needed a diagnostic done to see if there was engine damage due to overheating, replace the belt and anything else needed. I called Max Auto Service and Maria got me right in. When I delivered the car, I told Roger that for five years, my car has had a substantial coolant leak, but it has never overheated because I continually was filling the radiator, every single day. You can't imagine how much antifreeze I have gone through in five years. I had taken it to three different shops during those years and none could fix the issue. One quoted me $3,500 just to "look into it". Well the serpentine belt coming off was a blessing in disguise because, Roger had my car for a few days, did the diagnostic, no engine damage, repaired the initial issue AND there is no longer a coolant leak !! I appreciate that they took responsibility and made the effort to correct the situation. I don't even know that you needed to get your tires rotated every so often so I ended up buying 4 new tires earlier this year due to them all being bald... ANYWAYS they took real good care of me there, I called when they opened and was told that they take walkins but it's also better to make an appointment just in case. Showed up, filled out some simple paperwork and was in and out within 2 hours. They explained to me with a break model showing me how bad they were and how my rotars had damage as well. After that conversation I requested to see the breaks and rotars that they had removed and he said yes. They were very low and barely there . When it was time to pay I asked if they had military discount and they do. They apply it to the service fee but the entire thing. Nice 10%. He also provided me a copy of my receipt and explained everything that was on it to me. He was very kind and patient. I wish I had his name, all I know is that he's bald and light skinned.
