Boobs, dicks, asses, heart shaped bushes no matter what body part your going to expose, just showing it does not make you sexy or radical or interesting and it certainly doesn't make you a character. All of that comes from inside, it comes from your brain. And just being naked or buffed out or even gorgeous doesn't make you memorable. I thought of all this watching Caligula Maximus at La MaMa ETC. The show had its ups and down's. It had a very clichéd golden penis that Caligula arrived on, that was a down. It had a very enticing aerial performer Anya Sapozhnikova, an up. But what it had most of all was a company of wanna-be exhibitionists. I went to see this show because I wanted to see genuine debauchery. I wanted to feel turned on and off and dirty all at the same time, I wanted to experience big justified artistic risks and be inspired by them as well as shocked. I wanted to be embarrassed with a little wow factor thrown in for good measure. Caligula Maximus wanted to give me that experience but it fell short. Ryan Knowles as Caligula and Tim Dax as Germanicus, Incitatus stood out. Ryan carried most of the production with the confidence and balls out risk taking his character deserves, while Tim made a background character someone to watch. Unfortunately the rest of the company felt forgettable and generic. This show reminded me there are no small parts. Every moment an actor is on stage no matter if they are pole dancing topless or cast as third spear-carrier to the left in a Shakespeare production they have to have a character, otherwise they are just a prop or set dressing that moves. The truly great artists justify every second they are on stage no matter what they are called on to do. That's why acting is exhausting. I could see the direction in this production, "roll around naked", "pose", "be scary" but did anybody find out why their character was doing it? If they had I would have believed it and in turn not thought about it, I would have been too busy wiping my brow from the feeling of "wow is it hot in here". I would love to see this production go farther. Get a cast more experienced and come back. Shock me next time, I know you want to.

The rehearsal studios at La Mama hold some surprises--including dolls with dicks.

It's hard to know where to begin writing about La MaMa, since it's such a big part of the neighborhood. They have a few separate theaters in the neighborhood, as well as rehearsal studios--which I've used recently. La MaMa was started in October 1961 by Ellen Stewart, who died in early 2011 at the age of 91. Harvey Fierstein has said of her, "As anyone with any knowledge of theatre knows, she changed the world." (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/146630-Ellen-Stewart-Off-Off-Broadway-Beacon-and-Founder-of-La-Mama-Dies-at-91) It remains a vibrant hub of culture and one of the things that make the East Village such a great place to be.

I took my 9 year old daughter here for a puppet workshop. It was fantastic, fun and educational. The workshop was in the main theatre area where they do performances and it was hands on for the small group of kids that the puppeteers entertained. The staff was very nice and sweet and attentive. They did a great job combining and educational experience about cranes with hands on and fun learning. All the kids were smiles, laughing, and excited. The best part for parents is that parents are free of charge, while kids are only $8. Id bring my daughter back here over and over. I am interested in seeing their shows.

Saw Mulan there. The the venue was legitimate, customer service at the bar came with a smile (Pinot was lovely), the bathrooms were decent but not spotless. Parking in the area on a Wednesday night was doable. We had front row center seats so I can speak about the leg room. And of course the show was soooo much fun! The Red Poppy Ladies are powerful and entertaining! We highly suggest experiencing the show in the first three rows to actually feel the sonic vibration of the drums.

    Human beatbox festival. Freakin amazing!

It's a really great space, and since it's experimental theater, the audience was kind of part of the set.

SARAH, the security guard is a predator!!!!…read more I went to House of Yes last night for Futch, a lesbian dance party. I been a couple times before and met Sarah there. She was always so friendly and flirty with me. Last night I came with my new partner. As soon as we walked in, she was standing nearby and she looked angry seeing us together. The rest of the night, all I could feel were her eyes on me from afar. At one point, she passed by me and secretly caressed my ass. I felt very uncomfortable and asked my partner if we could leave right after. I didn't feel safe asking for a manager to report her as she's already a supervisor security there. This is supposed to be a safe space and I DID NOT FEEL SAFE!!! Apparently from another person there, she gets "around" with girls there and even denied someone entry because they were no longer together. I would think she would be more respectful and keep it professional. I DID NOT CONSENT FOR HER TOUCHING ME LAST NIGHT!!! It's gross to think this is their employer. I will no longer be going back and neither will some of my other friends. It sucks, I really loved that party.

The Moth is a storytellers event that occurs at different places, and the one I went to was at Housing Works Bookstore and Cafe, which was the perfect venue. It started at 7:30 and ended at 9:30, there's no drink minimum, you can bring your own food, and tickets are cheap, but hard to get. It's essentially a show where people who'd previously entered their names get picked to tell stories in under five minutes. Anyone can do it, and anything can be said. There were funny ones, sad ones, dramatic ones, silly ones, overall twelve performances along with a host who introduces each one. They also sell drinks and snacks there, which goes to a great cause. Whether you're looking for something New Yorky, cheap, chill, cute, or thought-provoking, The Moth will satisfy.

Going to a Story Slam hosted by The Moth is actually one of my favorite things to do in the city…read more The story slams happen 4-6 times a month at various locations around Manhattan and Brooklyn (see the website for schedule). Each slam has a different theme. If you feel that you have a worthy 5-min story, you can put your name in the bag, where they draw out names. Ten storytellers go up and these stories are judged by three teams of judges from the audience. The winner of the slam goes on to the Quarterly GrandSLAM Championship. It lasts about 2.5 hrs and costs $8. I've gone to a couple of these at the Housing Works and I'm always really impressed by the quality and talent of most of the storytellers. Many of them take this quite seriously and you can tell that they spent time crafting their story and delivery. The best stories aren't the ones that are merely funny, but they're poignant, send you on an emotional roller coaster of highs and lows, and leave you with a message and something to think about. There's a certain raw honesty and catharsis that comes through and the audience is always supportive, especially so for the new storytellers who stand up there alone and vulnerable. Indeed, if the audience feels the judges are too harsh, the audience lets the judges know. At the Story Slam at Housing Works, the doors open at 7 pm (stories start at 7:30). There are limited seats, so if you're dead set on sitting, stand in line by 5:30. There are plenty places to stand and get a good view as Housing Works' second floor is a mezzanine. Recently I got to the line by 6:30 and easily found a comfortable spot to stand and watch (wear comfortable shoes!). The ticket sales of the Story Slam goes directly to The Moth. Housing Works, which is a wonderful organization that helps people with HIV/AIDS, sells alcohol and snacks, so you're giving to a great cause by drinking.

I was paired with a small group of out of town visitors who brought their family to NYC and wanted them to experience the Accomplice. The parents of the family group were repeat guests like myself who like me absolutely enjoyed their experience several years prior and wanted to share it with their family. It's NYC so even when you participate in the live experience it may seem awkward that an actor is making a scene (literally) on the streets of NYC but nobody bats an eye cause weirdness can feel normal on the streets of Manhattan. Accomplice still has the typical tour around the small area of the city where you interact with amazing actors and make your way to the grand finally where you share a simple drink with your group to celebrate your accomplishment. The staff do offer a hotline to get clues if you are stuck but thankfully my group was witty enough to figure out our way through our adventure. Accomplice is also great for corporate team building activities. I've raved about this experience at my office for years and one of my teams decided to book with the show. Not only did my office team have an amazing time but buzz is going around the office about this show that another team was considering booking but business guests thought it would be too cold in November for such an event; such party poopers! LOL! Corporate events include a three course meal and tons of fun! Highly recommend for both tourists and corporate team building events.

This is truly a welcoming space, everyone can come here and be themselves. The bodies are lithe, svelte, glistening, beautiful. The acrobatics can't be matched. I am always astounded at the beauty of the erotic ballet numbers. I think those are my favorite part. The deep, soulful vocals of the diva singers can't be forgotten either. I think I've said before, I've done the couples couches and the small chairs along the stage. The small chairs are a better value and really a better view for most things, unless something is from the ceiling behind you. You can also upgrade with things like champagne and cocktails. This play is about a universal theme of love, sex and relationships. If you are looking for love,…read moreand who isn't, this show will speak to you. For me, everything in this comedic play seemed all too familiar..during the show, I kept on thinking, OMG I think I found bits and pieces of myself in all the women characters...which makes me ask myself, am I crazy?!!!??? I'm okay with that....because MEN ARE A**HOLES. One of the actors when introducing the play in the beginning and after the intermission was making the audience chant..he would say Women are crazy because men are........and the audience, made up of mostly females said......A**HOLES!!!!!!! It felt therapeutic to shout it out loud! I was really getting into it...I looked at my boyfriend and he was making a frowny face. ahahha. I was trying to get him to chant A**HOLES too but he wouldn't bite. He said men are a**holes because they used to be hunters...okay. ahahhahah. That's why I love him! He's my hunter, now go hunt! This play reminds me of the book, Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus. The play is set at one of the character's home, Nicole is throwing a soiree to celebrate meeting her internet fling for the first time, at this soiree!! Nicole invited her whole entire family to meet this internet fling that she herself never met...WHO DOES THIS??!! Nicole's family consisted of her sister and her BF, her brother and his GF, and her best friend and her BF. There was another couple that were supposed to be at the soiree but never showed up. All these couples are all having dysfunctional relationships, which makes for a funny play. This play takes a look into human nature, human relationships and human behavior. Sometimes the play may seem over the top, overly dramatic and highly passionate to get some laughter from us, but I recognize the characters all to well!! I know people just like the characters on stage in this play. I definitely have seen some of the characteristics even in myself. I felt ashamed at times...but laughed at myself! The comic timing in this show is awesome. My favorite couple is Hillary and George who never even made it to the soiree! I was laughing through the whole show. Even coming back from the intermission was fun! Be forewarned, women are going to be portrayed as psychotic beings, men are going to be portrayed as insensitive liars and we all need each other in unhealthy ways. But at the end it's all for laughs and for fun which this play definitely accomplishes...I would highly recommend this entertaining show for any adult who has been through dating or relationship angsts. This show is definitely Rated R for RAUNCHY! See it if you want to laugh your A** off! Last day of show is June 21, HURRY!
