We saw "Oh Mary" here. This is more of a review on the theater and not on that production (which is short, but very funny and entertaining). This is an old theater and you can tell. The design is not great, although the acoustics are good. We had balcony seats that were not great. Then the bathroom situation up there is really odd and insufficient (try to go before the show). Then the rows are really tight--it is a good idea to get there early. Then if you want a drink, there is only one bar and you will need to bring it with you. read more

This is a review of the current production of "Oh Mary" at the Lyceum. I was seated in Row E of Mezzanine in seat 1. This seat was slightly obstructed by the railing placed to the right of me. Nevertheless, the play was still pretty good. It had some fun gags and dirty humor here and there. I was taken aback by the fact that Simu Liu(of Shang-Chi and Barbie fame) was in the current cast. Definitely like the intimacy of this theatre, has Orchestra, Mezzanine, and Balcony level seats in my opinion all great views of the stage. Sound system is crystal clear. We went to see Oh Mary and definitely hysterical and a fun time had by all from the cheers and non stop laughter. They just lose a star for having such expensive cocktails. The theater itself is beautifully detailed but not overly ornate. The seats were comfortable and the staff helpful. Overall it was a perfect setting for the Oh Mary play we saw staring James Cameron Mitchel. He lit up the stage as did all the supporting cast. In the front row I got a close up of some bloomers under the petticoats which was a riot. This theater is only a block from Hotel St. James which was incredibly convenient and there are several great bars and restaurants around to enjoy a bite or a drink before or after the play. read more

While we were not fully informed of an obstructed view, the theater was intimate and perfect for a brilliant performance so even if you do end up with last-minute rush tickets you will not be disappointed because you are so close to the stage and the performers! Like I'm prone to do, I'll say something about the theater, then a little about the production. (Years from now, the layout will likely be the same, but readers will have no interest in what I saw in 2025.) 3 stars -- maybe 2.3 -- for my seat, 5 stars for the show. The Lyceum, designed in the Beaux Arts style, opened in 1903. It's one of the oldest surviving Broadway venues AND -- this is impressive -- the oldest continuously operating legitimate theater in New York City. The facade, auditorium and lobby are designated landmarks. If you choose to sit in the balcony as I did, be sure to eat your Wheaties. You have to climb, climb, climb up a series of circular stairways, fortunately separated by landings. People younger than me were huffing and puffing. When we reached our seat I thought 'one could easily get killed if they lost their balance and fell forward.' Seats are tight, leg room minimal. To their credit, there are bathrooms in the balcony: a tight two-seater for women, and a urinal and toilet for men. I saw "Oh, Mary!" My ticket was discounted because Jinkx Monsoon and Kumail Nanjiani already left, and Jane Krakowski hadn't yet started. Hannah Solow, Cole Escola's understudy, was fabulous. (Cole is the award-winning playwright who also starred as the original Mary.) While I would have preferred a drag artist, I'm sure Hannah is as good, perhaps even better, then Jane Krakowski will be. Know that if you're homophobic and potentially offended by a raunchy script -- get tickets for "Lion King" instead. read more

The Lyceum Theatre is the oldest of all broadway theaters and it shows in all the best ways! The beautiful wooden walls, chairs (not the seat part), and ceiling make this theater warm and historic. I didn't use the bathroom, but I wish I had a chance to check them out. The seats were surprisingly not tiny despite the theater's age. The cushions are worn, but not in need of replacing in my opinion. It's a small theater which makes it seem more intimate inside the cozy wooden walls. Oh Mary! Is amazing and hilarious! It's an hour and 20 minutes of non-stop laughs. The current cast is perfect, so get tickets while you can! read more

Quaint, on the smaller side, theater on 45th Street where Oh Mary! is currently playing. We had good seats, row L center, with great views even though I had a tall guy sitting directly in front of me. Ugh. The concession and snack stands were small, situated by the entrance. The 5 PM showing seemed sold out to an audience seeing this fantastic 80 minute comedy based on Mary Todd Lincoln. There has been several actors playing Mary since the show premiered in 2024. After seeing Pirates the Penzance Musical earlier this summer with Jinx Monsoon, I immediately bought tickets for Oh Mary! upon finding out Jinx would be taking over the role for a limited time. This play was hilarious--the entire cast had the audience laughing nonstop. Jinx Monsoon was phenomenal in the role of Mary. A must see and 5 star production. Excellent. read more

The staff were friendly and helpful. The AC was strong on a humid summer day. Oh Mary itself was a hoot. But as a person with a disability I had a particularly hard time navigating the bathroom and the steps to the balcony. I know that it comes with the territory in these parts (certainly not the first theater I've visited) but the stairs down to the bathroom were narrow and steep. Thankfully the disabled stall opened up for me to use. We had seats up in the balcony, which was soooo many flights of stairs up. I guess the answer is to pay for orch tickets - disability tax always gets ya. read more

Went to see Oh, Mary! and we laughed from beginning to end. Cole Escola was what made the show incrediable and it was worth the wait for his return. The theater is small and cozy and I liked how the stage is up close. We sat in row D in center mezzanine and the view was fantastic and we can clearly see every facial expressions from the casts. The seats also had a good amount of incline so my view wasn't obstructed despite having a taller person sitting in front of me. I am 5'3" and have short legs so I had no issues with the seats as I had ample leg space and was comfortable. However, I can see it being tight for taller individuals. There's only 1 super tight and old unisex restroom on the mezzanine level. Thank goodness the show was fairly short with no intermission or else I can't imagine what it would be like to line up for the restroom. I was told there's more on the orchestra level but I didn't experience it myself. I would recommend going to the restroom before going to the theater. Overall, it's a beautiful and cozy theater. The only downside is their restroom situation. read more

I attended the Lyceum Theatre to see Oh, Mary. I'm almost embarrassed as a New Yorker to admit how long it has been since I've seen a Broadway show (I was in high school), so it's hard for me to judge different Broadway theaters. I'll do my best, though, so here we go. The Lyceum is old, and I say that in a good way - it's one of the oldest Broadway theaters and the oldest one to have been continuously operating since its opening in 1903. The interior definitely give off that vibe, however everything is maintained well - it's a beautiful theater. Due to its relatively small scale, the seats are pretty close together as well as close to the stage, so even if you're in the back it feels intimate. Despite this, the seats were roomy - I had no issue with leg space which was quite refreshing. Overall, the Lyceum provided a great experience for my return to Broadway - I wouldn't be disappointed if I found myself here again. read more

I saw Oh, Mary! with my mom last weekend, and the theater was nice. Good seats, good view. I don't remember the bathroom line, so it couldn't have been as miserable as some other theaters! I loved how they've decorated the theater for the show - so many paintings, photographs, and a bust of Cole Escola! Made the theater a unique setting for the production! This is mostly a review for Oh Mary! although I have seen many shows throughout the years including Hadestown. The Lyceum, I've got to say is so iconic of a theater because of truly how slanted the balcony is to the point that your neck will hurt a bit. I didn't know anything about Oh Mary! before I came and genuinely this musical was the shock of my life. Not to spoil it for everyone on Yelp but the fact that this musical is about Abraham Lincoln's wife, love affairs, things not being what it seems is absolutely wild. I really have to give great props to Cole Escola for being the creative writing genius that he is. Also typically when I go to plays, it's sometimes hard to follow the plot because you're sitting in the back as you can't hear it that well. Well, I had no trouble following this plot at all and I loved all the nuances in there as well. Overall, highly recommend seeing Oh Mary! So funny and entertaining! read more

This is a pretty theater that has some nice staff that work here. The concession stand and merch stand are both on the smaller side when you first walk in. The seats in this theater are deff not the most comfortable at all. On the smaller side and just not comfortable, at least mine wasn't. Good thing the show I saw here was on the shorter side. I did not see what the bathrooms looked like here but there was a bathroom with one stall on the Mezz level. I had no idea how small that one would be. Was kinda hard to navigate. read more

We got super lucky and won $94 lottery tickets for Oh, Mary! on Broadway for two people. Our seats were in the front row on the side. The view wasn't perfect but we could still catch almost everything and it didn't take away from how fun the show was. Theater is definitely on the older side. The cast is rotating and when we saw it, it starred Betty Gilpin, who was so funny and full of energy. The show itself was smart, weird, and hilarious in the best way. I don't want to give too much away but was pleasantly surprised because the premise of a play based on Abraham Lincoln's wife was a weird concept. My kid and I bought tickets to see Oh, Mary! and were super excited about the show. The theater is beautiful, but its seating is awful if you're plus sized. We were in the 3rd or 4th row on the mezzanine and my hips would not fit in the seat. The arm rests do not lift up and are solid, so there is no flexibility. I had to perch myself sideways to make it work and my back hurt for 2 days after. It's unfortunate because the view from that area was fantastic and it's a great small theater. I loved it so much, I am going again! The seats are comfortable. Not too stiff, not too crammed together, positioned on a gentle slope so short peoples' views aren't blocked by tall people. Please keep in mind, I sat in the orchestra, center, row E. I can't comment on the balcony/mezzanine seats. The theater is older, has a lot of cool architectural details, but I've read some reviews that are not happy about the upper level seats--less desirable views and lots of steps. The bar staff were also funny and attentive, and the drinks are strong (but very expensive--a tumbler with a triple shot of bourbon plus tip was almost 60 bucks!). 5 stars for Oh, Mary! 3.5ish stars for the theater itself. It's clearly a historic theater and has been preserved in a certain way, but the restroom situation is rough. The stalls are very, very small, though the restroom experience is improved by the pictures of Cole Escola's fictional prior performances in each stall and on the walls down to the restroom. I also find this to be one of the more claustrophobic theaters, especially in the front orchestra. The seats furthest to the right and left are not aisle seats. They are next to walls. read more

We went to Oh, Mary! after hearing glowing reviews and expecting sharp wit or creative reinterpretation. Instead, we were shocked and disturbed by what we saw. The show's depiction of Abraham Lincoln as a grotesquely caricatured, hypersexual figure and Mary Todd Lincoln as a pathetic drunk who jokes about her son's death was, in our view, deeply disrespectful and vulgar. There was no meaningful plot -- just crude jokes and crass performances that reduced Lincoln to a disgusting character who drops the F word frequently and describes his frequent homosexual experiences in visually explicit details and Mary to an idiotic, vulgar woman. The enthusiastic audience laughed and jumped up to give a standing ovation. We were horrified by what felt like a desecration of history and basic decency. If you appreciate satire that stays within reasonable bounds, you will find this show offensive rather than clever. Just before the show started, my wife had a fainting spell from the heat and humidity. The staff was amazing and went way beyond to help us. The woman who we assume was the manager, made sure my wife had everything she needed and personally escorted us to our seats. After the play, she attempted to call a cab, but we ended up getting an Uber. I can't say enough of how much we appreciated everyone's help. read more

I love Broadway Musical's. Who doesn't? I booked a ticket to watch A Strange Loop as it recently won a Tony Award for Best Musical. I've walked by Lyceum Theatre in the past as many other theatre's and restaurants are in this area we all know as Times Square/Theatre District so I was very familiar how to get here. Upon entering, the ushers verify not only your e-tickets, but a picture ID and no need proof of vaccination card. Very intimate feeling, seats so close to each other, balcony on both sides of the stage, but I didn't get to see how big the Orchestra floor was as I purchased Mezzanine seating. No intermission during this show, Didn't make a stop at the concession/snacks as I had dinner prior to the show. But very nice venue! read more

This kind of intimacy makes the seats small and crowded but keeps you close to the action. The theater has an old-school baroque decoration which adds some superficial class to the scene. This review is specifically for my hard of hearing friends. If you need a headset, here's where to go. To get an audiology headset, you need to go to the usher that is closest to the right side entrance doors. They will need your ID and will get some contact info for you. This could take up to 15 minutes if there's a line. If you have hearing aids, you need to be able to connect them to the telecoil, the regular headset will not work for you. If you don't wear hearing aids but need extra assistance, they will have a headset that will work for you. Either way, this staff member will be able to help you get connected. This is a small theater so you may be able to turn your hearing aids up and be able to hear without the device. The theater itself is very nice but the people who work here are the ones that blew me away. Every single person that I interacted with was helpful, overly kind, and this includes the actors themselves. I went to many shows while I was in town and nothing compared to the Lyceum. read more

My very first experience sitting in the box seats to see a Broadway show. Very appreciative during times of COVID. I'm not a fan of watching a show with an obstructed view but having room to move your arms and legs was a freedom never experienced. And I have been to lots of Broadway shows where majority of them feels like you're packed in a sardine can. The show I saw Strange Loop hit home with a lots of realistic, dark comedy, and surreal elements of struggles (I won't give away the plot of the play if anyone is interested in watching it). The singing, volume, acting, and energy of the actors were on point and the whole thing was spectacular and worthy of a 90/100 ranking. Note this theater is in a popular prime Times Square location so be prepared to sift through the crowds of NYers and non-NYers. read more
