We ate off napkins 4-we're seniors and don't eat much so shared a meal. The meal came with no extra plate. To her credit the waitress asked if I wanted a plate. Weird that she'd have to ask. Unlikely that I'd reach across the table. Normal customer service. So far...nothing to make us reconsider coming here. Until we talked with the manager. He didn't even pretend to listen to us. He kept trying to justify the fee but refused to listen to our concerns. Tried to make our concerns clear..,told him the FOOD and WAITRESS STAFF were great!! I explained the $3.95 was reasonable IF it were coupled with reasonable customer service policies. instead of listening or even pretending to listen he simply talked about cost of food etc IF he would've practiced customer service and listened (or even pretended to)... he would still have us as customers. Wowza!! I was really quite impressed after finding this quaint, home-style, Mexican restaurant in the middle of no where. The exterior is not shouting, "THIS IS WHERE YOU WANT TO EAT!" However, after reading the reviews on Yelp I decided to give it a try. Waitress was nice, helpful, courtesy, and attentive. This is the worst Mexican food I've ever had!! The nachos with ground beef were so bad I had to throw away and I'm not one to waste food, but it was so bad I just couldn't eat it! The biggest problem I see with their food is they don't spice it with anything. We stopped here for lunch on the road from WI to AZ. Several of the Yelp reviews said 'don't be fooled by the exterior' and so, while normally we would have bypassed La Macarena we decided to give it a shot. The place is much nicer inside than out. Bright colors and lots of booths by the windows that line the front of the restaurant and tables as well. We arrived early for the lunch crowd and so we were told we could have our choice of seats. We picked a booth by the window. I noticed that many of the booths have seen better days with rips in the coverings, however the tables were all clean and tidy. Someone appeared immediately with a big bowl of good tortilla chips and we each got our own dish with a very good salsa and also our own dish with a warm melted cheese sauce. Both were very tasty and allowed for double dipping - yeah! I ordered a combination plate with one beef taco and one chicken enchilada. The combo came with rice and beans and some shredded lettuce and tomato. The enchilada was quite good. I thought the beef in the taco could have used some more seasoning, it was pretty bland. The parking lot is always packed at lunch and dinner but the service is fast. Went to la Macarena in Perry yesterday. Truly the worst Mexican I've ever eaten. Taco Mayo was better, and that's a low bar. The food was tasteless. The meal came out about 5 minutes after we ordered it. Not a plus. It was as though they had a cheap buffet set up and just slapped the food together. The queso was lumpy and watery and also tasteless. The taco had a boxed shell. The enchilada sauce was bland. The chips were only fair. And to top it off, the waitress was odd. The other staff was friendly. The bathrooms were in need of an update and there was a hump in The floor that my husband tripped over. Pleasantly surprised for Perry Okla.! After being in Cali for over 17 years and having some really awesome Mexican dishes and meals I've become very critical of the Mexican food I grew up eating. My family raved that this was a great spot but I was still very skeptical. I am pleased to announce I went there twice during my visit! The salsa was fresh and tasty and the service was exceptional. They serve their beers like the Chavela's at Tlaquepaque in San Jose CA. The heavy frosted glasses with salt and lime! My husband's salsa was a bit greasy. I had the taco salad. They gave me about one tablespoon of pureed bland ground meat, with watered down bland canned refried beans, bloated rice, some lettuce, a pinch of cheese, a pinch of tomatoes in a taco shell with a side garnish of sour cream and guacamole dip. My kids chicken strips and fries looked like they were grocery store bought. If I wanted to eat out of a can I would have stayed home. The service was poor. The waitress was very impatient. When she asked me and my husband about our drinks my husband didn't order quick enough and she looked at me and said what are you the only one ordering a drink and walked away. We left full. Food was good but not amazing. They bring salsa and cheese dip to each diner and a large basket of chips. I did not like the cheese sauce by itself but was good after a few bites of salsa. The salsa was smooth like it had been made in a blender. We asked for some of their hot sauce which they brought out and was considerably warmer because of increased amount of jalapeños. I had the spinach enchiladas. White, sour cream sauce was good. Homemade corn tortillas. Dad got beef enchilada and quesadilla. He thought the enchilada a bit bland but the quesadilla was good, especially after adding salsa and cheese sauce.
