I had high hopes for La Lucha after all I'd heard about it, but it did not meet my expectations. We made reservations for right when they opened, and initial impressions were good -- they even had a highchair for us like we'd requested. They brought out the tasty shots in the beginning and those were the highlight...so many amazing flavors in them. And they brought out a pineapple juice for our son which was cool too. We were given the "sharing is caring" spiel and then eventually ordered our meals, plus guacamole and chips for an appetizer. Then the food started coming out (slowly), the first surprise being that the portions were super small. Like my husband ordered the "quesadilla" and it came out as two mini taco-sized things. But the ingredients were nice (fig and cheese) and he thought they were OK, though by no means authentic. Next came my friend's fish dish. When a server stopped by to check in later and asked how the food was, I mentioned I'd like my tacos, as I'd been waiting a while. He then asked me with surprise if I hadn't heard the server's "sharing is caring" speech and explained that the food comes out one by one. I told him that's fine but that I'm vegan, so I can't really eat the food my omnivore and vegetarian dining companions ordered. Eventually my food came out and it was nice, but not amazing, qhich seems to be a common theme here. I also had two margaritas which were tasty but I couldn't even taste the alcohol. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I really liked all the smokey flavors in the drinks and food though. The hot sauces were pretty bland by the way, though the "really spicy" one had a nice kick (but was not all that hot to be honest). My companions ordered the two desserts to share (nothing vegan, so I couldn't have them) and they both enjoyed them quite a bit. Overall, I think the food is interesting and fun, but the portion sizes are really small compared to the price. For what you get, it's definitely overpriced, as it's not a fine dining experience. Additionally, the concept of sharing food should be optional because, let's face it, not only do people have different food restrictions, but sometimes people don't want to share their food or eat something they're not in the mood for. The best of the best. Not sure why this place has negative reviews because it is extremely authentic and fresh Mexican cuisine. Coming from Southern California I have high expectations for Mexican food and this place not only did not disappoint, but exceeded my expectations. Fun atmosphere, friendly staff, and delicious, well curated plates with thoughtful touches. The restaurant as promoted is a modern take on traditional Mexican dishes. Ok, some stars for the creativity in the plates and the idea. It is nicely designed. BUT tbh, you can eat much better Mexican for less money, and without the cheap diner-style attitude from the waiting team. Just too forced. The food is nice, but I had 4 unpleasant incidents in one night: - Food took forever and came rather disappointing in size especially when advertised as "for sharing". - The menu stated "caramelised pine-nuts" I got peanuts!! Quite a downgrade. When I told the manager he said I must have gotten the wrong menu. We were a table of 6 all with the same one. (not nice, and learn your menu). Then came the stove breaking down and some cool dishes were off the menu. - I got a stone in my mashed beans and it was painful. Accident do happen, but that on top of everything else was a bit over the top. Maybe we caught them on a bad night, maybe not. If you want to charge upscale prices, do walk the talk. I must say, many of the reviews are confusing to me. Perhaps there was a bad night? Perhaps some people are just difficult to please? Mexican food in Berlin is tough, really most of Europe. I used to live in central Mexico, and I am used to some pretty amazing Mexican food, and it's something I have decided I'll just have to get when I am in the US, or possibly Copenhagen? (Hija de Sanchez) I'm not going to comment on price, because price is relative for people. You can go on their website and see the prices for yourself. I think they were perfectly fine, and I think the portions were fine, but that's me. We live in the neighborhood, but were actually on our way to try Zola. We saw Mexican food and my initial reaction was "no, this will just make me sad" but I saw mezcal and thought..eh...at least I'll have mezcal. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. They still had the brunch menu, but we genuinely enjoyed it! The cocktails were great. Most of the cocktails in Berlin are awful. Just tons of sugar and cheap liquor. These were not that, they were wonderful and balance drinks. The food was also great, now...were all the spices and heat levels spot on? No. Like many iconic foods, the location has a part in it. You cook with what is available, and the fact is that many of the things needed are just not available, but this place is the best Mexican food you will find in Berlin, and is even better than a lot of places in the US. Let's talk about service next. Maybe not all servers are equal, but our server (Manuela) was amazing. With the exception of Michelin star places (Horvath, Tim Raue, Cookies Cream for example), she is the best server we have had in Berlin. Hands down! Forced is definitely the word I would use for the place. The place wreaks like some white bro types went to Mexico once and decided to open a Mexican restaurant. I've traveled extensively through the region, and while there were some satisfactory and authentic adaptations, the prices, style and staff break the illusion completely. Edgy daring and a lot of fantastic flavors and love in the food... there is for everyone... meat eater, vegetarian and vegan. The staff can tell you straight away what dishes that contain gluten without going back and forth to the kitchen. So I don't know what problem exactly people had with this restaurant, but I had an excellent experience there. The service was friendly and attentive, the drink I ordered (3 times the same) was well prepared and the food was excellent. The food is honest for the price but I have to say that the service was terrible for us. They were not happy we were a large group of 9 people ( instead of 8 ) and one of the waiter was rude. Unless you like your salsa sauce black and the salad a bland mix of leafs, don't go there. We ordered two starters and two mains. First ones were ok-ish. Regarding the mains, Burritos were too dry and the salad was a huge pile of salad mix with maybe 5 almonds and 5 strawberry pieces (for that, 9.5Eur).
