My hotel concierge had recommended to me only two nearby places for dinner, both of which I'd tried on preceding evenings. With more dinners in the offing I wanted to find equally promising places but feared I'd settle for one of the ubiquitous Venice spots with mediocre food, catering entirely to tourists. La Lanterna looked promising, with what appeared to be locals spilling out onto a handful of tables out front but when I made the decision to dine there I was seated in the plaza, in a large array of tables that I'd not even taken to be part of the same restaurant. I thought of moving on before quickly checking TripAdvisor and noticing the high rating. "This place might actually be good" I remarked, before ordering up some wine. A Seafood Risotto for 2 was decided upon and it proved a thing of beauty, equally lovely to eye as to consume. So a place in the middle of a plaza - not on a canal - can be all that. This meal was great. Do they seat only tourists in the plaza and locals in the restaurant doorway? I'm uncertain but it didn't matter. La Lanterna was a place that I returned to my hotel telling the concierge he should be recommending. read more

This restaurant is so good. I don't know where to start. The food is amazing and I didn't need to wait too long. I tried the squirting pasta and the lobster pasta and it was really good. It was in good quantities. It was raining really hard that day and probably would've ruined the experience but it didn't. The people were nice and checked on us many times to see if we need anything. The overall atmosphere was nice and the rain did not ruin much of the experience. I would highly recommend this place. read more

My group arrived in town around lunchtime and were hungry (not quite hangry, but getting there!) After a brief wander from our hotel, we stopped, saw La Lanterna and decided to give it a try. Pretty good. We ordered a variety of pizzas and pastas - all decent. Efficient and somewhat speedy service, good food in a nice atmosphere. It wasn't extraordinary, just good - definitely not bad. I ordered the linguine with prawns and mushrooms. I was underwhelmed. Very bland and literally 1 shrimp in my dish. The waiter appeared very disinterested in serving us. I had to ask for plates and olive oil to go with the bread. My husband ordered the pasta with lobster and it looked like the exact same dish as mine except a lobster was placed on top. It had very little meat in it. There are a multitude of places to eat in Venice and I suggest you get another place. read more

Solid place in Venice. They spoke English well but no, I don't think I is a tourist trap. It wasn't top of any lists and well, it was fairly empty by 10pm but the food and the service were top notch. The mussels were truly great. Sweet, juicy pieces of mussel in a slightly too salty wine sauce. I enjoyed it a lot and there were so many it felt never ending.14€ The seafood risotto as good too albeit too salty. It was freshly made and took about 30 minutes. Too bad you have to order for 2 persons minimum. 34€. Good place to eat if you're wandering hungry and the other options were either too full or plain ignored you because you are clearly a tourist. When in Venice, I was on the lookout for seafood. This place is tucked away in one of the many Venetian courtyards. We were quickly seated outside before our 7:30pm reservation with incredibly attentive service, a bread basket, and two glasses of complimentary Prosecco before we had even got our menus. We opted to split the octopus appetizer (€13) and the seafood risotto which is only served for 2 (€18 each). The octopus came out and was tender, fresh, and flavorful. It came with some sort of nondescript veggies that turned out to be just as good as the octopus! As we waited for our main, the weather took a turn for the windy and potentially stormy so everyone outside ran inside to ward for the rain. Unfortunately, I don't think the restaurant was very prepared as the attentiveness of the service totally changed and all the diners were sort of on top of each other. It took us 10 minutes to get another bottle of water despite numerous waiters saying they were getting it for us. The seafood risotto was rich and creamy and well prepared but it wasn't the standout dish I thought it would be. Others got more pasta dishes and they did look a bit better... All in all, this was certainly a good meal though probably not the best of Venice. read more

What a beautiful experience this place was! There was 16 of us just arriving from the states and every place was either booked or closing. This place had seating inside and outside. They set us up with a long table. We had the fish that they do a whole presentation with for my husband and his mom to share, pasta for my daughter, and pasta for myself. Amazing little ambient place in the alleys. Servers were friendly and spoke good english. Free alcohol for adults before and after, free drinks for the kids before. Seafood platter was amazingly fresh, and reasonably priced. My mom enjoyed the crawfish(?) very much, it was raw, but delicious. This place also has an amazing baccalà mantecato. Main courses; I ordered Venetian liver. This is where I discovered that I am probably in love with polenta. The sauce the liver was cooked in was amazing (although it's sour, didn't realize it would be) but the liver itself was not as tender as the chinese-style liver I am used to, but still delicious. My brother enjoyed his truffle filled ravioli very much, and later, my mother used the ravioli sauce to mix the rest of her fish in. We left satisfied and happy. Definitely call in for a res. Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. Venice is known for their fresh seafood and strongly suggest sticking to these seafood dishes. The seafood risotto was creamy & cheesy with a robust seafood flavor and generous amounts of squid and lobster. The octopus salad was also tasty and reasonably priced. We made the awful mistake of trying to find a nice restaurant after we returned from a boat trip to Murano on a a Saturday night. You need reservations in Venezia unless you want to dine at 9 or later. In desperation, we called our hotel and they recommended this lovely restaurant! The waiters were very welcoming and attentive. We enjoyed a Prosecco (gratis) while waiting for our table. Both times we visited, we ate in the dining room but there's a lovely outdoor area with umbrellas had we wanted. To start, we shared an antipasto platter of cheeses and meats which was generously portioned. We also had the mussels and clams appetizer - best part of both evenings! I enjoyed a nice portion of spaghetti carbonara which was great. Our party also had the ravioli bolognese and the linguini con vongole. I stayed in Italy with a tour group with my family and my brother wanted to try a classic Venetian dish such as squid ink pasta. Through such searching on Yelp and Google, I found the Gas Lantern in Venice so we decided to give it a try. A couple other people in our tour group heard about all the Yelping and amazing restaurants I found during our stay Italy and decided to tag along. Considering now our group grew from 3 people to 16 I went to concierge to help me make a reservation considering she could do it a lot faster than me. We took our water taxi over and through an adventure through the allies of Venice we finally found La Lanterna da Gas. They have two tables of 8 outside waiting for us and our waiter Giovanni looked excited for our large party. We were greeted with some free prosecco which is a great way to start off the night. The menu is extensive and seafood heavy which is exactly what we were looking for. My dad, brother and myself split their mussel and shrimp dish appetizer which was some of the freshest seafood I have ever had. We all decided on a few entrees; my brother went with the cuttle fish ink pasta and I went with the salmon dish. My dad also ordered a seafood pasta which was pretty good but nothing crazy. My dish and my brother's were amazing! My salmon dish came with a sauce I would put on anything and the salmon was crispy on the outside while moist on the inside. My brother's pasta dish was the best entree we had during our 12 day trip through out Italy. I strongly suggest to try the cuttle fish pasta, even though for some people at our table the black shade to the sauce is a little intimidating. Most other people at our tables went safe with some raviolis with different fillings and all loved their dishes too. But my salmon and my brother's pasta dish were outstanding! We finished with a free shot of limonchello which is a great way to finish an outstanding meal. The staff was great and split our checks as we asked and were great the whole time making sure our 16 were all taken care of. This place might be out of the way for some and hard to get to, but if you are looking for seafood I strongly suggest! read more

Free glass of (actually quite good) prosecco to begin the meal! The service here is unusually friendly and attentive, given that it's Italy, so we had a wonderful time. I had a seafood linguine and my husband started with the black pasta and followed with the veal liver. All three were pretty good but not mind-blowing, hence the four stars. However, there's an extensive and reasonably-priced wine list full of some truly great wines and we quite liked the bottle we got. The dinner was followed up with a free shot of limoncello for dessert, too. so Venice is known for their seafood and my friends wanted to try everything on the menu and wanted to split bills but I really wanted to not overeat and pay waay too much. So I ordered my own spaghetti with seafood. I was tempted by fried fish or the fish lasagne. The seafood spaghetti was disappointing. It had mussels and clams (some were still closed) and one crab leg. I really wanted pieces of fish (turbot) and shrimp. The sauce was a tomato sauce and nothing special. Honestly I could have made something that has more flavour. The seafood was nothing amazing. It was 13.50 euros so around 22 Australian dollars. Pretty disappointing flavour but ok priced. I also had two pieces of bread that are included as part of the cover charge of 1 euro per person. Didn't like it much. Just white bread and seemed very dry and crusty. :( My friends had the grand platters for entree, black ink spaghetti (they raved about it), spaghetti with clams, and an eggplant dish with they said was their favoryite. They said the eggplant dish was creamy and tasted like a cross between a lasagne and a moussaka. Two out of the five people said their favourite dish was the eggplant while the rest raved about the black ink pasta. For their mains, they ordered a large fried fish which the waiter kindly debones for you, veal, and a side of boiled veggies in a tomato sauce. Portions are pretty big and though my pasta was in the entree section I was pretty full. The service is amazing. The waiter is friendly and even gave us some tips of what to do and see in Venice. He even gave us free limoncello shots after our meal. And unlike any Italian reStaurant I've been to, we also got wet wipes which smelt like limone. My friends also ordered a ricotta cannolli. They said the ricotta was grainy and not to sweet and wish they had ordered more. My friends bill was around 36 euros each for two entrees, three first mains and two second mains, a bottle of Moscato and the cannolli. read more

My husband and I came two nights in a row. The staff was so nice. The food was amazing. The first night we had the seafood and polenta appetizer followed by the sole cooked in salt with potatoes. It was one of the best meals ever. I had the tiramisu both nights, fabulous. The first night we were there someone ordered the seafood risotto. The server was saying how it is the best in Northern Italy. So we had to go back. Our second night we ordered steamed clams and mussels and the risotto. It was the best I have ever had. It does take 25 minutes to cook so you should order an appetizer or drink. Both the risotto and the sole is for a minimum of two people. Probably because they are no joke to make. Both worth it. Took lunch here and of course, getting a table wasn't hard due to the lack of tourists. I ordered the Aperol Spritz, as usual, and asked the waiter for some advice on dishes. His english wasn't so bad but we understood each other. So I ended up getting the grilled octopus as a starter and it did not disappoint! I think it's the best octopus dish I tried in Venice. It wasn't chewy, it was cooked perfectly that it was like chewing marshmallow. It was seasoned perfectly as well and paired nicely with the walnuts and veggies. For my main dish, I ordered the Cuttlefish/Squid ink pasta (forgot the translation) and man wa sit good as well. If I wasn't too full from the appetizer, I think I would have finished this one completely. But anyway, the squid/cuttlefish was cooked perfectly as well so it wasn't chewy but just soft and delicious. The pasta was al dente and well seasoned. One weird thing though is that they charge for "coperto" or the cutlery used for 4€ per person. I highly recommend this place for any gourmand out there! Great seafood! read more

We were looking for a particular restaurant, but in Venice trying to follow a map is nearly useless. So we gave up and stumbled onto La Lanterna - a most fortuitous event. The outdoor seating in the intimate piazza gave it a wonderful romantic touch. It's located just off the busy path so the stream of people walking by isn't constantly distracting. Complimentary prosecco before the meal and a shot of limoncello afterwards add to the warmth of the setting. All this great ambiance and the friendly service was prelude to very good food. My wife and I didn't venture past drinks, a shared antipasto, and first plates (my carbonara was fantastic), but everything was made with just the right touch. Cost was about 40 euros. A well-balanced sauce on a brilliant cut of meat, with sautéed vegetables/squash on the side. The service is very good. So good we went back for dinner on the same day as lunch. Cozy place on a relatively quiet area, this place serves a range of well executed Italian dishes. Between the two meals, I tried the seafood pasta, veal scaloppini , fish soup and monk fish. The seafood was very fresh and seasoned just right. The veal was tender and flavourful. The service was attentive and friendly and they lead off as well as close the meal with a taste of a prosecco at the start and a digestive at the end. The branzino was fantastic (they ran out of double portions so I was able to order a single portion- which was great!). The truffle ravioli was amazing. Amazing. For dessert- the three cheese cake was the best dessert we had in Italy. Complimentary Limoncello made the end of the night perfect.
