Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! We wend to EVERYBODY in the neighborhood and NOBODY let us rent their kayak at 3:30 pm Dec 9, except these guys. Awesome service and forever grateful to Nicolas - you saved our 1 year anniversary! Amazing service - quick clear instructions, very considerate, warned us about any possible problems explained how to row in the kayak as it was our first time and we had a tandem kayak. After he explained us how to put it in the water and not to roll over, we went and did it first try - no problems. We locked the wheels to the wooden fence so that nobody steels them (they are used to transport the kayak easier so that you don't have to carry it in your hands). We saw the sunset and peaked in the cave which was very exciting. Don't go inside the caves if you are renting on your own as the tides can be very unpredictable and you can roll over or hit the rocks - this is also illegal and only allowed during guided tours. Value point is amazing too. For a tandem it's 35$ (39.22$ with tax) and solo is 30$. All the guided tours were 80$+ and I don't really see the point them if you can go with these guys for only 35$. We did a full one hour but I am not sure how long you can usually go we came pretty late before the closing time. If you want to get the guided tours during the winter times the last ones usually depart at 2:30 so make sure you make it in time! read more

This surf shop was the perfect place to rent our boards during our San Diego stay. It is only about a block or two from the beach, stocked for any level, and great for anyone looking to have a fun surf day at the beach. It's $9 an hour to rent a board and an additional $6/hr if you want a wetsuit. The guy who helped us (I think was the owner) was a hoot. Very cool to hang around and meet for a minute while we got our things together, he definitely knew his stuff! He took one look at me and got the perfect size wet suit for me and we were out the door after! The guy who was there when we came back in to return the boards wasn't the warmest, but he did give us a bit of a favor on time which was kind. Try and wash your boards off in the ocean as much as possible before you leave since there isn't any near by hose or shower to wash them off in! read more

My dad recommended me La Jolla surf systems because I needed to rent a board and a suit. Definitely one of the most positive renting experiences I have ever had. Not to mention the prices were reasonable and they make the process seamless. The beach is right there so just mount the board on your head and walk to the beach. read more

I'm actually from San Diego and surf almost everyday. I decided to rent a surfboard cause the waves were good and they had it all, from advanced to beginner boards. I also ended up renting a kayak the next week cause the guys were so friendly and helped out. Great gang and super Cheap!! read more

The paddle boards here are not the inflatable ones like the rest of the shops up the street. This is the closest rental shop to the launching site, so it's the shortest distance you'd have to carry your rental (kayak, paddle board, etc). We rented two paddle boards and the store owner provides what I would call paddle board dollies so you just have to push the paddle board to the launching site. You also get a dolly lock, so you can lock the dollies to a wooden post at the launching site. You sign a waiver so the store is not responsible for you drowning, etc. They provide life jackets, but you're allowed to decline the life jacket - which we did. There's a bungee cord lashing system on these boards so you may secure items such as a life jacket or waterproof bag. One of the paddles we were given had duct tape wrapped around the grip. I asked if I could have a better paddle and the store owner - Doug - just took it without saying a word and changed it out for another paddle that had a torn grip. I did not bother to complain because I read other reviews that say the owner is mean. And yep, they're 100% correct. The store owner does not appear to like people. I get it, I'm the same way, lol, but when you're a business owner...you gotta be friendlier. Anyway, you rent here for the higher quality paddle boards and dolly with dolly lock. You don't rent here for any friendly service. Though...the two young men (maybe Doug's sons??) are really nice. They smile and they answer questions without any attitude. Thanks to those young men...but they're not there right when the store opens. Doug the Grouch opens the store. LOL. If I ever rent paddle boards again at La Jolla Shores, I will return here and I hope it's one if the friendly kids that will be there to provide customer service. read more

I've been going to LJ Surf Systems for the past year to rent a paddle board at the shores. The shop is crazy close to the beach and they provide a board dolly to make the haul extra easy. You get a dolly pad lock too to keep is safe at the shoreline. I've always had the owner help me and I see that people on yelp say he isn't extra friendly, he's always been kind and straight to the point with me, letting me know how the surf conditions are fairing. Go here for a quick and easy rental experience. read more

My cousin and I decided to rent Stand-Up Paddle boards. We called ahead to make sure they had some available which they did so we headed down. The staff was very friendly and accommodating and they even gave us a locker to keep our keys and phones. The boards and paddles were satisfactory as were the life jackets. The downside is the 2 block walk to the beach from the rental site is kinda a hike and difficult on a busy weekend. I would still rent from them again and maybe try the kayak tour next time! read more

Went to this shop over the weekend to rent surfboards. The owner was really helpful and polite. He had a ton of rentals and guided us into what size board we needed. We were so excited to get to surf because of the beach closures. I would recommend this place. Great prices and helpful owner. Was a cute store with so many more rentals such as kayaks, wetsuits, boogie boards, etc. read more

Surf systems is a great place to rent equipment for the beach. I rented a paddle board and it was perfect. I got two hours on the water which was just the right amount of time. I highly recommend coming here if you are interested in paddle boarding or kayaking. read more

I really wish I didn't have to write this review, but make sure to check your gear thoroughly before renting from here. I rented a paddle board from them, and the paddle broke while we were out in the middle of the water. I inspected the paddle, and there was a black piece of silicon surrounding the exact area on the handle where it broke. I don't believe in coincidences. I returned to the shop and explained that the gear was faulty. I got slapped with a $60 fee for a crappy paddle, and they wanted to keep the paddle as well. Do not go here unless you are willing to pay for faulty equipment that can't even do what it is meant to do. read more

This was my first time coming here. I came to buy a wetsuit. It was easy and quick to pick out a size, try it on, and buy it to surf in that day. The employee working here was nice. They have dressing rooms but no bathroom. I believe they also rent out/sell boards. You can buy or rent their wetsuits. read more

Quick and easy, painless process to rent a fun board for a couple hours. Price was very fair. $8/hr for a soft top fun board, 6 foot, perfect for the La Jolla shores shorebreak at the beach park down the street from the shop. Guy in there was classic shop dude. Very nice. Explained that it was $8/hr and your 4th hour is free. In and out. I overheard him talking with newbies asking to rent and he was patient and informative with them. Great place. Mahalo read more

Personable, friendly, and waaaay cheaper than other kayak rental shops along the street. We didn't even have to pay a fee to store our belongings behind the counter. There is no public restroom, but there's a changing area. Our tandem kayak was high quality with comfortable seats, and I was happy we came here, after renting a cheap, uncomfortable, overpriced kayak the day before from a different shop. I'll definitely be coming back here the next time I'm in town!! read more

Ben, you are a good man. I came strolling in to LJSS my first week in California. I had decided I needed to learn how to surf now that I lived here. Ben was working behind the counter when I walked in and as I asked questions, he took the time to answer them all. Ben has been my surf advisor since there--renting me a board and suit before I bought both and giving me pointers along the way. All around good guy. The store is conveniently located by LJS beach and a fun place to walk in to and chat. They also do a brisk business with the kayaking, I think. I highly recommend. read more

I had the pleasure to walk into La Jolla Surf Systems after a long morning of searching other shops to rent a kayak and a couple of paddle boards. I almost gave up until I walked into LJSS, thank you for making my day! The kayak was new and more comfortable than most and was set up and ready to go. My girlfriend and I rented a tandem kayak from here. They were fast, friendly, and got us on the water a lot faster than the other companies. The advantage of going here is that it's first come first serve. You don't have to wait for a slotted time. The are also closest to the water, which is nice. They even hooked the GF up with some sunglasses! read more

Ok renting two surfboards was cheap ($16 for two boards / one hour) and that shop is really close from the beach. But .... Not really great customer service.... Is it because I look too girly to rent a surfboard ? 1/ crazy warning about big waves (ok better be safe ! I understand - yet that was pretty small waves, I've seen way bigger in my 6 years in San Diego ) 2/ because of the expected big waves , we got small boards. My friend is like 5"0 and 110 pounds but I'm way bigger - yet we got the same boards 3/ both boards had a completely ripped off leash ... We didn't realize that before being in the water. How dangerous is that when your board flies away from you! read more

Very bad experience. We came first time and checked half day pricing and they said it was 20 usd for soft board. The other day we came and rush to rent 3 boards asking for half day pricing. We rented at 2pm and returned before 6pm. First, they said that we need to pay per hour which was almost half higher then they agreed to charge half day but then they said price would be 25 usd per board. My kid also changed on board in between and they charged for his board as two separate rentals two hours each. Total we paid 100 usd for 3 boards for just 4 hours after long negotiations. The day before we rented the same type of boards for the same 4 hours in next door store Diva for 60 usd. The bigger problem that owner was using dirty language even I was with kids. Never go to this shop, especially with kids. read more

I tried renting stand-up paddle boards from this shop. Think again. They provided windsurfing/kite boards (essentially just a larger surf board) instead of an actual stand-up paddleboard, making it impossible to stand out in the open waters of La Jolla Shores. I found it a bit strange that the boards were not the right material and didn't have handles in the middle, and the staff just told me that they were "older" stand up paddleboards. After about 20 minutes of constantly falling down and getting soaking wet in the freezing water, my friend and I returned the "SUP boards" and got a full refund. At first, they tried telling us that they were definitely stand up boards and they never received any complaints. But then at the end, they explained that they were not "full-on" paddleboards. The staff was very nice about the whole incident, but wish they wouldn't have wasted our time in the first place. If you're looking for stand up paddle board rentals, don't go here. read more

I will not be back. The customer service was not good. They also do mean that if they close at 7pm don't bring your surfboard rental any later. They had to of closed earlier because at 7:02pm there wasn't a soul in sight. The bad business and customer service is why this is a one star. We won't be back. read more

The guy was super helpful, went above and beyond. We got wet suits, surfboards, 1 SUP board. This is the closest to la Jolla shores beach to carry rental boards but it's still a little tough to get them all the way there. Thank goodness he gives you a little wheel cart to roll your SUP board to the beach. read more

Since REI is located in an industrial street, there are many parking spots available for this building and the main building. My husband and I took our snowboards to get waxed. This time around, we opted to pay for the hot wax as opposed to their free machine wax. The hot wax is usually $36 each but they were having a promo that it's half off until March. We went on a Saturday mid-afternoon and it took only about 20 minutes. I also wanted to buy some new boots and I put my name down on the sign up sheet on the clipboard. I was the next one in line and thought the wait wouldn't be too long but I still ended up waiting about 30 minutes to be seen. It seemed there was only one guy dedicated to the boot fitting area. After a while, I ended up approaching another worker and thankfully he said he was able to help me out. *Tip if you're going for boot fitting: put your name down on the list but also just ask anyone with a green vest to see if they can help you out so you don't end up unnecessarily waiting a while. I'd like to give Mike a huge shoutout for helping me find the right boots! He was so personable and he took the time to explain what I should feel. He suggested I put insoles in my boots because I have flatter feet and it made a whole difference, so I really appreciate that. Overall, we had a great experience and received wonderful customer experience between getting our boards waxed, fitting for my new boots, and checking out.

I live nearby and went into the store for the first time the other day. Sales clerk were friendly, but a little too much in your face. Not as tacky as the Lululemon staff, but equally nice. They kept pushing on the idea that this store is different since the clothing is "ethically" made in the USA. I bought a shirt and shorts and when I came home and thought about it, the concept they advocated is a load of crap and frankly, misleading. There is nothing wrong with having clothes made in other part of the world. What is unethical is to offer them next to nothing in wages, poor working conditions, and lack of basic benefits. When Nike pays workers in Vietnam according to their "cost of living," they are misleading us because no one should sacrifice lunch to buy a bar of soap. The shorts I bought were $95. They are comfortable but overly priced. The shirt I bought is more reasonable, and I didn't buy it because it was "ethically" made; I bought it because I liked the color, the style, and the fit. So, PLEASE STOP telling people that they are "ethically" made. Just because it's made in Long Beach doesn't mean it's made ethically. Look at your factory and see how many parts used to make textiles come from China, or Europe, or a dozen other countries. We live in an international community that is interdependent on other economies. The least you could do is to make them in other countries and offer them the same conditions we have and help their impoverished economies. If you want to advocate nationalism or "buy American," it would be more believable. But to have a showroom in La Jolla, paying top dollars in rent, and sell a 1 sq. meter fabric with a drawstring for $95 AND calling it "ethical" is NOT ethical. It's just American. Having said that, I think the clothes here are great and are equally comparable to their competition 4 doors down. Incidentally, this morning I went for a run with my Yogasmoga shirt and Lululemon shorts and felt just as a good.

The fashion Valley Mall tho, is my main mall. This is the mall where I actually do most of my shopping. We watch movies at the AMC theater when we have extra time and get food at the cafeteria/food court area after hours of walking. My son never misses going inside the Laderach to get a free taste, the best chocolate there is. We love going to this mall, especially with my son now being a teenager, we would most likely be doing lots of our shopping activities here especially at his favorite boutiques, like the zumies, Hollister, Rayban, and plenty others I do not recall.... We also love going to The escape room where the mall is. My favorite is the Nordstrom Rack! ;) The holidays tho could get really packed and busy but there's alot of nice things to see and lots of good deals to look forward to.

Pros: *Surprisingly easy parking (a rare mall miracle) *Huge mix of stores from bougie to budget - Louis Vuitton, Coach, Hollister, Macy's, Nordstrom's, Neiman Marcus, H&M, Zara, and Gucci to name a few *Open-air vibe with palm trees; very San Diego aesthetic with a tropical feel; complete with fountains and artistic landscaping *Solid food options with a food court, cafes, and kiosks, Cheesecake Factory, Seasons 52, and my fav, True Food Kitchen *Clean and well-maintained and easy to wander around *There's a lot of variety here to keep you entertained *They have seasonal events that is a nice addition to shopping Cons: *Felt oddly empty for a Sunday..kinda eerie but it may be an introvert paradise *Dangerous for your wallet (you will overspend) *Some stores seem like they're hanging on by a thread *Malls just don't hit like they used to despite the pros- mainly because everything has gone up!
