I love spending time in and around my pool and I am there every day-in fact it's tough to go on vacation when I have such a beautiful place at home to enjoy Recently I had a minor problem with auto fill and they came out immediately to fix it even though my pool was built three years ago. We originally hired La Jolla Pools in 2012 to resurface our pool with a pebble finish, install new tiles, and make other improvements. Back then Bart and his crew did a terrific job and produced a pool that we were proud of. So when the concrete coping on our pool recently failed (unrelated to the 2012 work), we didn't hesitate to contact La Jolla Pools to replace it. Unfortunately, this time around the job did not go well. Demo of the old coping and setting the concrete forms went fine. The job was botched when the new concrete was poured and the forms began to leak and slip. The concrete could not be finished properly that day and work was halted. What a disaster. The hardened concrete contained large voids and was not level, straight, or square. Bart the owner acknowledged that things did not go well and convinced us that the substandard work did not need to be demolished and replaced. Instead, he hired a local subcontractor that specialized in concrete repairs to try and fix things. To make a long story short, that work didn't go well either. Bottom line - a project that should have taken a few weeks ended up taking three months. Yes there were some rainy days in there but much of the delay occurred because both crews were hit-and-miss and much of the work by both had to be re-done, sometimes more than once. We ended up with pool coping that is just ok. And the whole ordeal wore us out. La Jolla Pools did not come through for us this time and unlike before I would not recommend the company to others. read more

We are a commercial application and have very high usage of our community jacuzzis and pool, but are newbies when it comes to maintenance. No matter what we did, we could not keep our large jacuzzi clean. It kept turning green and looked cloudy despite cleaning it every day and the chemicals being in the right range. You better be there in person to hand a check over immediately every step of the way or you will threatened with a law suit and lien on your property. Ever heard of net 30 dude? Stick that in your 30 page contract. Their contractors will leave trash and cigarette butts all over your backyard and dump plaster sludge into your newly planted flower beds. I picked up so many butts it was disgusting. Their contractors will also show up frequently at 6AM and start jack hammering.... one guy actually showed up in my backyard to clean my pool filters at 5:45AM. Brutal. Make sure you clearly state in the 30 page contract they make you sign your expectations... define words such as 'remove" because I guarantee their definition will not be the same as yours. Their craftsmanship is okay but your relationship with La Jolla pools will be a loud, dirty, legal one. Sort of like a trip to the dentist to get a root canal. Necessary but completely unpleasant. Update: after my brand new pool started leaking I called another company out for a second opinion. Turns out one of the lines La Jolla Pools expertly pressure tested is completely filled with dirt. Bart and LJP have done a phenomenal job on our extensive pool remodel. We are at the very tail end of the project, getting our decking and plaster done next couple weeks. Pictures to come. Highlights: 1. Few contractors would even take on the job. It was either too complicated or not in their area. 2. Bart never batted an eye when we described our vision. He only helped enhance it with his own input. 3. Custom custom custom. From the specialty designed and manufactured spa-to-pool overflow scuppers, to the completely unique tile layout, and the super-duper 18 jet raised spa with TWO DIFFERENT MODES, if we could imagine it, Bart could implement it. Oh yeah, and speaker in the pool. 4. Judge a person by the company they keep. Bart introduced us to a tile supplier that had inspiration photos, books and ideas waiting for us when we arrived to look at tile. She knew the project in advance, and made the selection process actually fun. As our project started to grow, we realized we were out of our depth from a design perspective to make all the elements mesh. Bart brought in a designer that we contracted with directly who gets all the credit for the beautiful features in our project. 5. His team. Everyone he works with truly enjoys what they do. The engineering guys geek out when they're explaining the fluid dynamics of the systems they've built. The masons worked on our coping and spa like it was the Sistine Chapel, and it shows. No project is perfect. We had our bumps. One of the coping pavers that was provided had a speck of metal somehow embedded in it, and with all the rain it rusted and created a dark orange spot on the worst section of the pool possible. Bart and team worked with the paver company to make it right, and not destroy the surrounding area in the process. And the project has taken far longer than we originally planned, but that's been entirely due to us wanting to add things as we go or hemming and hawing on design decisions. Bart has been flexible in scheduling and never pressured us to make decisions we weren't ready to make. Moving to San Diego, we really wanted a house with a pool. The way things worked out, none of the homes with pools that we looked at were quite right, so we ended up deciding to buy a home sans pool (with a tiny back yard) and have one built for us. Gulp! I didn't want a boring, rectangular pool, but with our meager budget I was worried that I wouldn't be able to get a pool as nice as what I had in mind. So we talked to a few contractors, and La Jolla Pools' design won us over by a wide margin, and the price was right. Once the permits and scheduling logistics were out of the way, construction went by at a rapid pace, and the quality of workmanship was excellent. Once everything was finished, there was one section of the concrete walkway that we weren't happy with (the shape, not the workmanship), and this was addressed promptly. Since then, La Jolla Pools has always been responsive to emails from us, and in dealing with whatever minor hiccups we've had (e.g. a motorized valve that needed adjustment, and so on). I wouldn't hesitate to recommend La Jolla Pools. They took my vague ideas and produced a beautiful, competitively-priced pool that I still love, 3 years later. read more

Our pool needed both structural modifications and resurfacing. I had some design ideas and interviewed several reputable firms. After careful in-depth consideration, we selected Bart Jacobs, owner of La Jolla Pools, Inc. Bart added a bench 6" below the water line on one side with curved steps at each end, extending further into the pool. He Installed special glass tiles around the waterline, and resurfaced the entire pool. Other unrelated work going on at my home caused damage to the pool deck area. Major plumbing lines that ran next to my pool and the entire deck had to be replaced. Bart was hired to do the necessary work by my insurance company. He mitigated the expansive soil, replaced all of the plumbing, corrected the expansion joints, and retiled the entire deck surrounding the pool. His oversight was constant, and his workers were both talented and professional. He was fabulous working with both my insurance adjuster and the engineer. In two years of major construction at my house, Bart was by far the most professional tradesman I had on site. Bart's organization, honesty, communication skills, presentation of options, fair pricing, and execution of the work were exemplary. His contract was extremely detailed as to scope of work and expected payment schedule. We made a few changes as work progressed, and Bart provided documented change orders. He has also replaced/upgraded all of the antiquated pool equipment that I inherited from the previous owner. After almost a year of dealing with contractors and putting almost $100K into our house, we saved the biggest, most expensive project for last.....our swimming pool I was really hoping La Jolla Pools would prove to be different, but I was wrong. After meeting with 3-4 contractors we decided to go with La Jolla Pools. We have endured a month of arguing, being nickel-and-dimed, and sub-par communication. After spending 5 figures, I have a pool that is inoperable. Early on in the project I notified the business owner that we had an abandoned suction line that was dedicated to the pool vacuum. He claims to have pressure tested it and guaranteed it will work if he re-plumbs it. I was hesitant but I took his word for it. Low and behold, now that the pool is full, that line is leaking. He tried to blame me for puncturing the line while working on the landscaping around the pool, but it was clear that this damage was done by the prior owner and that this is the reason the line was abandoned. I told him he needed to fix it and he proceeded to quote me some ridiculous prices without even coming to see what the issue was or how severe. I fixed the issue myself fro less than $40. The owner would rather sacrifice client satisfaction and his reputation for being half-ass. The owner also pushed back on removing stones that were allowing roots to grow into the coping. Had I not forced him to do this, the roots would have grown right back and the coping would not have been properly installed. A clear sign he is comfortable doing the job half-ass. I also had to complete a demo job on an old water feature that his team did not complete per our agreement, so his mason could properly replace the loose coping....again, unless I had taken the initiative it would have been done half-ass. In our final exchange, he said we "complained" during every step of the process. I work in a service industry and if I ever referred to my customer concerns, inquiries, and recommendations as "complaining" I would be fired. After a month of arguing, being nickel-and-dimed, being threatened with the terms of his 20 page contract, and being accused of complaining too much.....we were left with an unfinished project. The pool looks nice and we are excited to use it. I'd recommend that Bart just charge more so his margins aren't so tight and he's easier to deal with. read more

La Jolla Pools is really terrific. We came to Bart for a pool remodel and couldn't be happier. He turned our 40 year old pool into something truly amazing. Bart came to us with a design and the pool is exactly what we saw in the drawings. Bart suggested removing a raised area we thought we wanted, and it saved us about $5,000 to skip it, and the pool area looks better for it. Bart recommend this change even though it didn't benefit him to do it. Bart really looked out for our best interests. La Jolla Pools shows up on time, does everything they say they will do, and they're great craftsman. Bart is very low pressure and easy to communicate with as well. read more

After all most a year of interviewing contractors and reviewing quotes my wife and I selected Bart at La Jolla pools to remodel our pool. The remodel included a new deck and retaining wall as well. During the initial visit/estimating process Bart discussed the actual methods and scope of the work we wanted done to accomplish our design. We had a somewhat complex issue of the pool being a bit too high in relation to the house, which gave us an odd deck slope and poor to no drainage. Bart discussed the options and got into the details of how they would fix the issues. This was different from the other contractors who all seemed to just want to take some measurements and give us a quick quote. Bart also had good construction and design ideas that helped us get what we wanted without blowing out our budget. Bart wasn't the lowest priced quote but we selected him because we felt he was going to do the job correctly at a fair price. At the end we got exactly what we wanted and our yard/deck and pool are amazing. We have spent the whole HOT summer in the pool and on the deck and there is nothing we regret or wish we'd done differently. I'd also like to add that the crew Bart has are great guys, from the demo guys putting in 10 hour days digging jackhammering and hauling stuff away, to Alex doing tile and coping, to Bruce building a beautiful retaining wall and paver deck, they all had pride in what they did and were friendly and easy to have at the house everyday. read more

We elected to make our very large pool smaller and to add a zero edge spa, which takes precision and mastery. We also added and outdoor kitchen and firepit. We are completely pleased. Bart earned my trust a few years ago when our new pool motor broke. Two pool companies quoted me approx $3K to fix it. One of those companies was Mission Pools. I called Bart for a third quote. He gave me a comprehensive list of what needed to be fixed immediately and what could wait until later. He also had the solar company come out to fix something that wasn't right. He charged me $200. Since then I found out that pool companies are notorious for shoddy work because many will use cheap parts and cheap labor since most people don't know the difference. Bart is tremendously knowledgeable and honest. Also he is the kind of person you actually enjoy having in your yard / home because he has a calm, happy disposition. I will never do business with La Jolla Pools again. In short, he took three times longer than the date he promised; half way throught the project he charged me more than he quoted by saying there were unforseen added costs; and when my company was delayed in paying him due to the holiday season he threatened to put a lien on my property. I had originally contacted Bart, the pool owner, telling him I needed a "one stop shop" contractor who could handle everything (including deal with the city for building permits). My intent was to only have one point of contact and therefore one payment. Of course he said he was an expert and dealt with the city all the time. He promised it would only take him a few days. So a few days after awarding him the project I he said he hadn't started yet because his draftsman was having technical difficulties. A week after awarding him the project he finally started breaking ground but then told me he was waiting on the city building department. A few days after that he informed me that I would need to get a soils engineer. He said he would shop around for one but that took him a couple days as well so I had to find my own! He told me he did not want to pay for the soils engineer becuase that was an unforseen cost on his end. Now I was faced with a half finished project and lost time and added costs. This was extremely frustrating to me since I had given him plenty of time to quote this project and do his due diligence with the city department. Now, I had to pay for a soils engineer to come out just for an inspection. Finally, what should have taken a few days, he was finished weeks later. Now it was time to pay him for the work done. However, our accounts payable only sends out checks twice a week and of course we had people gone for the holiday season so we were delayed in remitting payment. Bart did not delay in threatining me with liening the property. I've never had such a frustrating experience with any purveyor. He was clearly in over his head on this project and as a business owner. read more
