It really is good advice to not eat at places where employees are trying to recruit you to eat at their restaurants or if you see pictures of the food on a big menu outside. I feel they are trying too hard. I was happy when we stumbled upon Set de Gòtic in the Gothic Quarter. They had an intriguing menu but my heart was set on paella. I found out this restaurant makes their paella within 24 hours of serving it so it is fresh and definitely not frozen. This paella was served with Spanish rice. I have always eaten it with yellow rice. I really enjoyed the Spanish rice. It was very tasty and had a really nice blend of flavors. The langestine was delicious and tasted like the sea. I love that. The clams had a nice texture. What I was not thrilled with was the mussels. The size of the mussels were super small. It was a bummer. This restaurant is very quaint and authentic. It had a definite Spanish feel to it. I loved that and they had a nice selection of wines but I did not feel like drinking that day. Service was good and was just at the right pace.

They brought out plenty of food. The wine was good. Always a bit tart but definitely fruitful and delicious. The tuna tartare was exquisite. The grilled baby squid was amazing. It wasn't overly chewy and fresh. The eggplant was probably my favorite. The ham and cheese were really good. I loved the bombos but the fried Greek cheese was a show stopper. It was all good! Highly recommend!

Their Gambas à la Plancha looked like grilled shrimp with just a dash of herbs, but the shrimp is of excellent quality and you can taste the freshness of the seafood. Their Paella Marisco was the highlight for me. I'm sure there are many wonderful paella places in Spain, but compared to the ones I've had in the U.S., this one excels in flavor. Their Pimientos de Padron is equivalent to grilled shishito peppers found in many Japanese restaurants back home, but I love the simplicity of this dish. A little bit of rock salt really brought out the natural flavor. The peppers weren't overcooked either. They were the perfect texture. Their Patatas Bravas, quite simple, but yummy nonetheless. Piping hot when it came out. Potatoes were crisp on the outside, moist on the inside. Nice size chunks. Once dipped in sauce, tasty! The Crema Catalana was a nice touch to end dinner. This dessert is the Spanish equivalent of creme brûlée. Theirs was definitely more substantial - richer than most creme brûlées that I've tried and the toasted top layer, definitely well executed. Easy to get to on foot if you stay at a hotel close by. Not too pricey either for the quality of food served. Will definitely eat here if I visit Spain again.

We started with calamari, potatoes, and nuggets -- a delicious warm-up act. Then came the squid paella, which was out of this world. Oh, and don't skip the sangria -- it washes everything down beautifully.

La Esquina fell on my radar via my brother. He did his own research of spots to try while in…read moreBarcelona and heard good things about this place. The menu and reviews looked great, so I was excited to check it out. That being said, we made plans to have a late dinner here our second night in the city. The vibe of La Esquina is super casual - there's a decently-sized dining area with a bar towards the back that serves as a focal point. There's nothing too noteworthy about the decor - it almost doesn't match the food they serve but that just might be my perspective. The menu is mostly tapas, separated by protein type. Additionally, they have some larger format rice dishes that are meant to be shared. We decided on tapas as well as one of the rice dishes - because why not both? For tapas, we ordered two skewers: pork and sea bass, croquettes, pimientos, patatas bravas, and steak tartate croissants. All the tapas were great - though the croissants and patatas were the biggest standouts. The latter were cooked perfectly and had a generous helping of sauces, while the former was super creative and delicious. Our rice dish had cuttlefish and prawns that was seasoned well and prepared in a tasty squid ink sauce. The rice was slightly firm, and that cuttlefish really came through. The overall flavor was heavy on the seafood so it may not be everyone's taste, but it worked for me. We opted for dessert, and went with the Crema Catalán. This was similar to a crème brûlée, but topped with a thin layer of caramel. It was really good, surprisingly not overly sweet and a great finisher to our meal. Service was good, everyone was really friendly and food came out at a good pace. Overall, La Esquina was an excellent find, I'm really glad we checked it out and I wouldn't hesitate to return for another meal.

They said the food was delicious and it was very close to our hotel near the Place d'Espanya, so we gave it a try. Absolutely awesome! My friend and I ordered the mixed paella for two (18 Euros per person) and it probably could've fed four! It was chock full of different types of seafood and chicken chunks. The whole dish was flavorful and satisfied like a warm blanket on a freezing night! The young lady waitperson was so friendly and we laughed as we tried to communicate with each other (she with no English and me with no Spanish). After we were stuffed to the gills, she brought us a complimentary plate of 4 pieces of olive oil cake and two glasses of a very tart brightly colored yellow liqueur that my friend said had a definite kick. When I told our waitperson that I don't drink alcohol, she brought me a glass of the same fruity base liquid sans the alcohol, which I found to be very tart and very pleasing on the palate! When I finished it, the young lady offered me more, but there was no way for me to fit anything else into my completely full satisfied belly! This place might look touristy with the menu posted at the door and its plastic covered menu inside, but the food and staff are wonderful. Don't let your prejudices keep you from enoying the amazing place. Might be a bit pricier, too, since it's close to the plaza and hotels, but it's worth it! The charm of this restaurant was a highlight of our day; made for a wonderful end of a very active day of sightseeing in Barcelona!

We shared a salad and split two entrees - beef rolled up with gorgonzola cheese and onion and herb breaded pork with fries. It was a really decent meal, though prices were a bit steep. Overall, our experience with the staff was pleasant and they were helpful and attentive. It's a really popular restaurant, apparently, because when we were checking in, the front desk girl told us that if we wanted to eat there for dinner we should make reservations in the morning. We just got lucky to get dinner there that night, it seems, because it was booming and crowded and we were squeezed into a tiny table. A few days later, we made a reservation to eat lunch here. There was a really decent 3-course lunch special. Here's what we ordered: espaguetis con salsa de queso (spaghetti with cheese sauce) ensalada de espinacas con setas y vinegreta de modena (spinach salad with mushrooms and vinaigrette) costillas de cerdo con cebollitas salteadas (tiny beef short ribs with salted pearl onions) tintorera a la plancha con tomates al horno (shark fillet with roasted tomato) macedonia de frutas de temporada (seasonal fruit salad) pastel de crema (cream pie) Everything was so good! The cheesy pasta was surprisingly light and though the salad was really simple, the dressing was so good. The beef short ribs had a great seasoning and were really tender. The fish wasn't fishy at all and the tomatoes made a perfect accompaniment. The dessert fruit and the pie were really refreshing and were a great way to finish the meal. The quality of the food here is really great (and the hotel is awesome too) so I definitely recommend it.
