Mark is a true craftsperson who approaches his work as if it is a piece of fine art. We recently hired LA Custom Tile to do our kitchen backsplashes for our range and sink walls. Given we were working with a more finicky tile type, we wanted to hire a specialist who was familiar working with our tile. From beginning to end Mark was a true pro, explaining his process so that we were fully informed, offering competitive pricing, following through on everything he said he would do, and leaving us with an even more beautiful installation than we imagined. We reached out to Mark based on the reviews we saw here and elsewhere, and I can only say the 5 star average is well deserved. Mark does exceptional work and is a consummate professional to work with.
I can't recommend LA Custom Tile highly enough. Mark was able to come out on very short notice and knocked out the job quickly and efficiently, without sacrificing quality for speed. His technical skill and attention to detail were immediately obvious - he clearly knows exactly what he's doing, and the finished tile border in our bathroom looks fantastic. He's a true professional in every sense, yet his pricing was extremely reasonable. On top of that, he's just a genuinely kind, trustworthy person, which makes the whole experience even better. It's rare to find someone this skilled who you also feel completely comfortable working with. If you're looking for tile work, don't look any further. I'm already looking forward to my next project with LA Custom Tile and wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to anyone.
We are so happy with the new sink/vanity and the beautiful tile work. It is like having a brand new bathroom. Mark did such a great job and he is a real craftsman and a pretty good plumber too. Mark kept the job extremely clean, especially with his ventilation system that kept dust contained in the one bathroom. We would definitely work with Mark again. I would be more that happy to recommend him for other projects. Bruce W. McKinlay PE
This is the second project Mark has completed in my home. I honestly would not even consider using anyone else for tile. The results speak for themselves - my small kitchen has been transformed into the most beautiful space in my home. I smile every time I see it. Mark's precision, thoughtfulness, cleanliness, and professionalism is unmatched. He has such pride in his work and it absolutely shows. Aside from the exceptional quality of the work, Mark is always punctual, fast, clean, and responsive. He's also a delight to be around! Even my neighbors enjoyed meeting him while he was working on my place. Mark is also incredibly reasonable in terms of pricing. I truly can't recommend him highly enough!
Mark is amazing. He is truly a special artist when it comes to his craft which can be so rare these days. From beginning to end, he took maximum pride in our little bathroom project and he dialed in on every single detail to the max. I was so happy to have found him and hired LA Custom Tile for the job! We had a wall in our bathroom that needed new tile. He jumped on the project a little late and even re-did some of the preliminary work to make sure every single layer of the project was done with perfection. He constantly had creative solutions for our unique space and was so professional to work with. He was extremely clean and careful with our home and floors as well. I can't stress enough how kind and professional he was the entire project. I actually don't need anymore tiling work done in my home, but may need to find an excuse for some just so I can hire Mark again. Absolutely 6 stars if I could.
We've done A LOT of house repairs this last year. If everyone we've dealt with was as reliable and competent as Mark, I'd have far fewer grey hairs. I would recommend Mark without reservations. A few specifics: - He takes his work seriously, and he has a real talent for his craft. - He took a lot of time upfront so there were no surprises or issues once he got started on the job. (No surprises is HUGE in my book.) - We chose zellige tiles, which are difficult to install, but he did a fantastic job. - He shows up when he says he's going to show up. - He was a joy to have in the house. Having someone you just met in your most intimate of spaces can be hard, but with Mark, we felt totally comfortable.
This is a long overdue review for LA custom tile. The project was a complete bathroom remodel turning a tub shower into a stall shower without the surrounding curb. Mark did the demo down to the studs, rerouted water pipes and the drain and did a great job on finish plumbing. His tile work is on another level! The result is beautiful and flawless. He is very detail oriented and clean and respectful of my house. Mark takes on one job at a time and was usually here 6 days a week from start to finish. Always in a good mood and pleasant to have around. I am happy with the outcome and recommend him to anyone that needs tile work. Thank you Mark.
We recently had Mark do a complete remodel of two bathrooms, where we took everything all the way down to the studs. He did a really great job with everything and the results were better than we could have hoped. He is a super positive person and almost always seems to be in a good mood. In addition to the high quality plumbing he did, and his precise tile work, I think that one of his biggest strengths is coming up with creative solutions for difficult problems. With a project as big as ours, there are bound to be unexpected issues that crop up, especially since one of those bathrooms was all original from 1951. Despite the challenges, Mark was always thinking of ways to solve the issues in a manner that made us very satisfied. I believe that's a difficult quality to find in a contractor. He was very careful about putting down Ramboard to prevent damage to the flooring, baseboards, etc. In addition, it was great that he was so consistent about cleaning up each day so that we weren't tracking dust, concrete bits, etc. all over our house! If I had one minor complaint it would be that, with Mark's big personality and years of experience doing this, it sometimes feels as if his expert advice is more of a "you need to do it this way" as opposed to a suggestion/recommendation. I think it's probably just the way he speaks, and if you assure him of the way you want things done, he definitely comes through for you. Our bathrooms turned out great and we absolutely love them. He was a pleasure to work with.
We hired Mark to retile our master bathroom, and we can confirm that his other positive reviews are spot-on: Mark is highly skilled, detail-oriented, conscientious, and a really nice guy -- and he does all the work himself. Every day Mark arrived with a big smile and seemed genuinely happy to be starting a new day of "making us a beautiful bathroom." Our cat always went over to say hi, and Mark gave him some petting and a "hello, beautiful!" The days ended with cleanup and some admiration of what had been accomplished so far. In between it was work, more work, a couple energy bars, and more work. No cigarette breaks, no music -- just work and the sounds of work. Throughout the project, Mark made sure that we understood every executive decision that had to be made, and walked us through the options. When it comes to the layout of tiles around partial walls and windows and corners, there can be a lot of these! Mark was patient while we tried to decide what we would prefer. We had been expecting to also hire a carpenter and have our plumber do more work, but Mark was able to do a lot more than just tile! The pictures show our results, and here are a few extra details: Mark built the shower stall from the subfloor up, including a new L-shaped pony wall with a huge custom shower niche in it. We used a 2x7 zellige-style tile on the walls, and Mark had great ideas for how to handle the edges and outer corners. Rather than just slap some Schluter edging on, Mark cut us some beautiful mitered corners. For the vertical edges, Mark cut our horizontal bullnose so it could be used vertically. Overall the zellige is pretty tricky to work with, so we knew from the start that we'd need someone like Mark with a lot of experience. We chose a 12x24 tile on the bathroom floor. We wanted to use the same style for the shower floor, so Mark cut the tile into smaller pieces. Since he was making custom pieces, he was able to make them exactly the same size as the square shower drain. We wanted to use quartz slabs in various places, including an L-shaped slab for the top of the pony wall. I was concerned that we would have trouble getting a fabricator to take on such a small task, but Mark made us a template of the top of the wall to take to the fabricator, and we had pieces cut from a remnant within a week. Mark installed the slabs himself. The alcove with shelves by the vanity used to be just one of those little mirrored medicine cabinets. There was extra space available there, so Mark opened it up and framed the space for those shelves. Mark also helped us with the installation of our toilet and our freestanding bathtub, including soldering together the parts of the bathtub's waste and overflow. Overall, Mark showed a ton of skill, experience, and wisdom in all our various bathroom renovation tasks, and we look forward to working with him on the next project! Oh, and while Mark was working on our bathroom, our cat had to get an eye operation and wear a cone. Mark showed up one day with a huge bag of just about every kind of cat treat. He just wanted to give our cat something to look forward to each day!
I had called about 15 businesses in the area and no one would drill a hole in my counter for a water filter. I almost gave up until I found Mark and I couldn't be happier with the results. He was professional, punctual, and did a fantastic job. He took the time to explain the process to me and my partner and answered all of our questions. The hole is perfectly placed and looks great. A true professional I highly recommend. Thanks, Mark!
LA Custom Tile deserves the highest rating possible. Mark, the owner, is an incredibly kind person and a true artist. His attention to detail is a rare treat compared to other contractors in the LA area. Mark gave our fireplace a complete makeover. He carefully took out the previous tile and cut the wood floors to make room for a new hearth. After demo was completed he began to work on preparing the area for the new tile. His craftsmanship is going to ensure this fireplace is solid and secure for the rest of time. Mark was even able to raise our existing wood floor near the fireplace so that it was flush with the new tile. The final step was the careful and precise installation of the tile. Mark took care to ensure the tile pattern lined up perfectly and it even flows seamlessly from the front into the fireplace. Our new fireplace is much more than a fireplace, it is a work of art. I cannot express how valuable Mark's expertise was throughout the entire process. Our original vision for the fireplace pales in comparison to the finished product Mark created. Our favorite aspects of the fireplace are: 1. The floor tile is 100% flush with the existing wood floor (Mark is the only person in LA who could have pulled that off). 2. The tile pattern flows seamlessly from the front of the fireplace into the fireplace. 3. The overall craftsmanship of the tile and grout. Marked helped us pick out the perfect light gray for the grout. Working with Mark was a pleasure and we will be calling him again for our next tile project. He is a gentleman with a great personality and I truly enjoyed getting to know him over the course of the project. Thank you for reading this whole review, now give Mark a call!

We reached out to mark to tile our front porch and walkway, which was showing serious signs of wear and tear. Everything went so smoothly, from our first phone call, on-site estimate all the way through to end when we emerged with a practically brand new looking house. If we ever need to tile anything else in our house, I won't go to anyone else. read more

LA Custom Tile did an amazing job for us in our kitchen. We met with Mark after reading his reviews and found him to be knowledgeable, professional and wonderful to work with. He helped us with the tile design, color and size that would work best for our kitchen backsplash. Best of all, he is meticulous in his work and very professional regarding the business side of the project. We received our quote quickly, his contracts were all in order. He was responsive to changes and to all our questions. He kept us posted on all aspects of the job which we appreciated very much. He left everything clean as a whistle daily. Bonus - he is kind, friendly and just a nice guy! We start bathroom floor tiles this week! read more

Mark was the answer to all my prayers! If I could give him 10 stars I would! I purchased a townhouse which I needed to renovate earlier this year and Mark helped renovate the kitchen backsplash, the bathroom tile, bathroom appliances, kitchen appliancethe fireplace tile and helped me with multiple projects around the house. His attention to detail, extremely kind and helpful demeanor really helped me feel confident in the work and the quality. Since it was my first home, I wasn't too sure what to expect or how to go about making decisions and at the height of the pandemic Mark stepped in to be my contractor across all my major projects. He helped me with materials, guided me on what he thought would work best, and gave me very fair prices for his hard work. He is extremely reliable, shows up on time and I completely trusted him to take care of my home while I was away. If you have any needs, set up time with Mark and he'll give you honest feedback in his consultation. Everyone that comes to my house compliments me on the quality of all the renovations, and it's all thanks to Mark! I've referred him to family members already and know that we will be using his services for years to come! read more

I'm so glad I hired Mark to retile our fireplace. During his initial bid he told me the exact pricing, what would be involved in the project, and exactly how long it would take--and stuck to the price and timeline for the project. Mark did all the work himself (unlike some companies who outsource labor) and his work is outstanding! He's a true professional, and took the time to make sure everything was perfect. I had a bad "bathroom floor" looking fireplace surround and now I have a timeless and elegant brick fireplace. Mark was great to work with, and I'll definitely look to hire him again! read more

Mark deserves a 10 star rating! He did an incredible job with our kitchen project. I found him on yelp and could not be more pleased with the outcome. He is a very nice person, on time everyday and his skills are perfect and precise. Mark replaced the backsplash in our kitchen and we thought it would be a small and "easy" job. When he began the project, we discovered the existing wall in our kitchen was uneven and bowed in the center, something none of us anticipated. Mark took the time to even out and level the surface before proceeding with the tile installation. He did all the work himself and remained professional even though it caused a setback. Mark's 30 plus years of experience are evident in his work, taking care in everything he does. He kept a neat work environment and left our kitchen clean and perfect before departing in the afternoon. Mark's attention to detail is evident in the precise and symmetrical results. Couldn't be happier with the results and we will definitely use him again on future projects! read more

We had been debating a bathroom remodel for some time until our shower broke one day. Our vintage 1925 Spanish house needed updating and with walls that aren't smooth or even, I dreaded the necessary tilework. After interviewing traditional contractors, we thankfully decided to hire Mark. He was so lovely to work with. He had ideas but also respected ours. We are perfectionists and his tilework is top notch - perfectly straight and even. He had his hands full at our house as we ended up having to rip out the plumbing, replace ceiling and "shave" our solid concrete walls. He took it in stride and is very skilled beyond just tile. He did everything and we really love our new bathroom! While he was there he also fixed our decrepit fireplace hearth with a new "vintage" brick tile. It perfectly fits the house. I look forward to hiring Mark on another project. He does all the work himself and was incredibly tidy every day. read more

Mark is the best! There's a reason he has so many 5 star reviews! We hired Mark to fix a very sloppy job done (by someone else) on a tiled shower floor. From start to finish the job was completed with the utmost care and attention to detail. The task was not easy. First, we selected mosaic tile that required a lot of tricky cutting, and it was all done perfectly with no mistakes. The job also required raising the height of the shower floor so that it is able to drain correctly. This was also done with extreme precision and care. Our shower now drains properly, and looks 1000x better than it did before. I am thrilled with the results. If you need more evidence that Mark is totally awesome: he noticed that our shower head and drain cover needed to be cleaned. He took care of this and showed me how to do it (I didn't know how). And last but certainly not least, he noticed that our front gate was not locking properly, whipped out his special tools, and fixed that too! What an amazing guy!! It was a great pleasure working with Mark and we would hire him again in a heartbeat. read more

We had new tile laid in our kitchen and not only did Mark's quote come out far lower than others, he was an absolute dream come true. Courteous, professional, considerate, punctual and an amazing end result. Mark went above and beyond in every respect. How he treated the job site, the careful removal/reinstallation of appliances, and how he cleaned up- he even pressure washed our patio, trash and windows where his gear was!!! AND fixed our kitchen faucet which was loose! You don't need to look anywhere else if you're reading this. read more

Mark did such an amazing job we kept finding new things for him to do :) First he did all the backsplash in our kitchen, and a custom concrete facade on our fireplace! We then asked him to make a custom concrete countertop, and finally to put a concrete facade on our tree planter and built-in bench in the backyard. All of it came out beautifully, extreme attention to detail for a fantastic finished product! On every single project: - Mark was friendly, courteous, and helpful. He had some suggestions but offered them without being pushy at all and let me do what I wanted. As with all renovation projects there's little things you run into, Mark had great problem solving ideas. - Great design ideas. Got our aesthetic right away, and helped figure out the right finish on the concrete to match, we love it! - Mark was punctual, and did what he said he'd do, when he said he'd do it. Hard to imagine how hard it is to find contractors like this! - Quality of work and attention to detail was outstanding (why we kept finding new projects for him) and the price was fair. We did an entire house renovation and of all the many contractors I worked with Mark was a cut above. Wish I had more projects for him. Have recommended him to all of my close friends. read more

We totally love the work that Mark did on our fireplace! He was affordable, honest, super friendly, and passionate about his work, making the whole experience a delight. We wanted our fireplace to have a rustic looking stone facade, with a mantel shelf and TV mount. I got a few estimated from various fireplace or tile installation specialists and Mark was one of the most reasonable. Some places would have charged me more than double what Mark quoted! Mark was very friendly, honest, communicated well and was always listening and eager to accommodate our requests. Because we had no real time constraint, he decided to work alone on the project to have full control. He first spent some time reinforcing the structure of our fireplace to ensure it would be able to handle the weight of the stone. Then he spent a lot of time arranging the stones to look best, making sure we approved of the arrangement before setting it on the wall. He was meticulous and focused on doing a quality work at every step. It was clear that he cared deeply about his work and enjoyed making it sturdy, safe, functional, and beautiful. The results are outstanding as you can see on the pictures and we LOVE our new fireplace. It's a piece of art! We needed access to a gas valve and pilot under the fireplace and Mark created a secret trap door that you cannot see and is easy to open and close. He communicated well throughout the project, giving valuable tips on which TV mount to get and always asking for our preference on various options rather than deciding for us. He made sure to setup his work space in our garage and to thoroughly clean any dust or dirt at the end of every day so that we would be minimally impacted by the work. All and all we are very pleased with our experience with Mark and highly recommend him! We will definitely hire him again for other projects we have! read more

If you have a house that you take pride in, hire Mark for any tiling/bathroom remodeling/other projects you have. His work is flawless. Just don't keep him so busy that he doesn't have time to help us! We hired Mark to fix an old 1940s bathroom that needed to be entirely re-done. From the outset, Mark took the time to walk us through all of the steps that would need to be completed. He showed up every day, and kept our house and his workspace incredibly clean and tidy. We even had new carpet installed in an adjacent room while the bathroom was being redone, and the carpet was pristine after Mark left. It's also obvious that Mark takes incredible pride in the level of work he does. He ensured that the plumbing was updated and working properly, once he saw the rusted old pipes in the walls. He noted that our drain wasn't draining well, so he took the time to snake it. He saw our walls were lath and plaster, so when he was patching, he used the exact same technique, instead of cheaping out and using drywall. He used a concrete base for the walls before putting up the tile in the bathroom, since that will last longer, and not rot. And the tilework itself is beautiful -- perfectly level and flat. He made sure that our hexagonal floor tile was placed so that you have a full tile be the first spot you step on when you enter the bathroom. He truly pays attention to every little detail that causes a project to look spectacular, as opposed to merely ok. We even had a glass shower door installed by another company, and when he saw they left too big of a gap, he had them come back out and fix it. He took every effort to make sure we absolutely loved the end result, and we do. Mark is also very kind and super easy to work with, loved our dog, and was respectful of our time and space. We had a few different folks give us estimates, and his prices were reasonable and in-line with what others charge. His work is clearly best-in-class, though. I cannot recommend him enough, and can't wait to hire him again to fix up our old fireplaces and whatever else we dream up! read more

I've been through two major renovations in my life, and Mark is without a doubt THE MOST COMPETENT, PROFESSIONAL, AND CONSCIENTIOUS CONTRACTOR I HAVE EVER WORKED WITH... a true tile artisan! He is the right choice for customers who appreciate doing things to the highest and most demanding standards, without compromise. He is the right choice for customers who will trust him to use his 30+ years of experience to guide you in the right direction. He is the right choice for customers who will appreciate the carefulness and time he takes to get the project completed to the best it possibly could be. However, if you are looking for a patch job or average quality cheapie job for your rental or flip property, he is definitely NOT that type of contractor. Let me explain... 1. Mark works on your house as if it were his own. He sweats the little details that most homeowners might not even recognize or appreciate. After you watch him work and listening to him talk with the pride of a brand new father as he explains some of the detailed steps he takes to ensure the best possible tile installation, you know that you are in the safest of hands with him on the job. By the end of the project, I trusted him as much as a family member in our house. 2. Mark chooses to only works on one project at a time and focuses all his energy on your project until it ends up being, as he would often tell me, "as perfect as humanly possible". That's an insanely high bar to set... and he absolutely means it. By the end of the project, I realized that we may never get this lucky again! Every other person you hire in the future will pale in comparison. He exceeded all of our expectations by miles! 3. Mark doesn't work with an assistant because he wants the buck to stop with him. When you only deal with one point person, details don't get lost in translation. You have the luxury of dealing directly with the master tiler himself for everything. That's like having a celebrity chef actually prepare your food personally. 4. Mark meticulously set up his elaborate tented workspace in our driveway each day. At the end of his workday, he would pack everything up, sweep, and clean up the entire site way beyond what we even expected. He even filters the air of any dust with a purifier he runs while working! He doesn't seem to want there to be any ambiguity about how far beyond the ordinary he is. Having employed countless contractors who routinely leave the place a mess, Mark's conscientiousness was astounding. 5. Once you witness the enormous amount of time and effort that Mark pours into your project, you realize how fair his pricing is, given how fully booked he is at all times. He was the perfect choice to install our expensive hand-painted tiles from Fire Clay Tile. 6. And, finally, it is often said that dogs are great judges of character, and my dog may actually love Mark more than us. In conclusion, you simply cannot go wrong with hiring Mark... that is, if you can wait for him to be available. And, once he accepts your project, you will have a tireless ally who will complete the project to the highest possible standards and on-time. THANK YOU MARK for making our bathroom so beautiful! read more

Professionalism, integrity, craftsmanship -- this is what Mark brings to the job. His level of care and commitment is unparalleled. We originally contacted Mark (based on Yelp reviews) to replace our Santa Monica Spanish-style home's kitchen floor, counters, and backsplash. He patiently listened to our ideas and offered better and more creative options based on his years of experience. He kept us from making some serious mistakes with his wise guidance and counsel, and explained the pros and cons of all of the options to help create a successful plan and a stunning outcome. When we then decided to replace all of the cabinets, paint, and upgrade all of the plumbing and electrical, Mark worked well with and around the other tradespeople to make sure that we ended up with a kitchen that was more beautiful than we had originally imagined. While he was creating this gorgeous kitchen, we discovered that plumbing leaks in the shower stall walls had caused damage behind the beautiful and irreplaceable old bathroom tile. We were heartbroken because the bathroom is one of the really special parts of the house. Mark surgically removed the tiles and was able to save enough of them to create an entirely new shower stall with a pattern to match the rest of our gorgeous old bathroom. Mark was on time for every appointment, did everything (and more) that was promised, on schedule and on budget, and with the wisdom and experience to deal with the the surprises that an 85 year old house can throw at you. With L.A. Custom Tile you get great ideas, honesty, and execution. You get more than just tile work...you get a serious craftsman with artistic integrity and pride. read more

Mark was great to work with. Very professional, on time, easy to talk to, and great at explaining everything that needed to be done. I chose a particularly difficult shaped handmade tile, and Mark handled it with ease and the end result looks fantastic. Mark knows everything about tile, and I'd highly recommend working with him for any tiling job you need done. Also, his initial consultation and bid was free, which made it easy to shop around and compare prices. In the end his rate was reasonable considering how much work the job entailed. He also left the place very clean. I'm so happy with my new kitchen! read more

Mark is top-notch. We would definitely hire him again. We had an old disgusting fireplace that was in desperate need of a make-over. Being that it was the focal point of our home, we really needed it to be done right and look good. That's when we gave Mark a call. Mark came out within 1 day of our call for a free estimate. He gave us a very competitive bid and we booked him for the job immediately with no regrets. He showed up, as scheduled, and got to work right away. The best thing I can say about Mark is that he truly cares about his craft and is invested in how the project turns out. Everyone else we talked to only seemed to care about getting the job and getting paid. Mark is passionate about tile-work and it shows in his work. He asked for our input at every step of the way and also gave us honest feed-back about our tile choices. It felt like we did the project together. On top of the great work that Mark did, he is truly pleasant to be around and exudes positive energy. He is 100% trust-worthy and we felt totally comfortable with him being in our house on his own. We are planning to add a new bathroom in the future, and when we are ready, we will definitely be calling Mark at LA Custom Tile. read more

We had a 3D tile project with some beautiful high-end tile that required careful handling and attention to detail. Mark went the extra mile, took care in every step of our project, listened and communicated throughout. I wish that every contractor we've worked with on our home renovation project was as attentive and precise. Now we have a gorgeous entry wall to welcome us every time we come home! read more

Mark is truly an artistic craftsman when it comes to installing tile. After searching other yelp reviews, we hired him to install tiles in 3 bathrooms at our house. All three patterns & styles were different, and he did a masterful job. He is careful and conscientious about everything he does, and I would recommend him for other tile jobs in a heartbeat. His prices are fair and reasonable. My wife & I love him, and so does our dog, who loved the treats Mark gave him! read more
