Poor customer service - staffs need more training - I give them 2 stars because of their location and setting On a Thursday afternoon, my friends and I decided to meet up after lunch for coffee. Since Honolulu café in Kerrisdale was busy, we went to this cozy looking café nearby. My first impression of this place was good from its ambience and décor, and the server was kind enough to arrange the tables to seat all 6 of us without much wait. However, as the server started to take our order, I found that it took a bit of effort to communicate. Originally I wanted to share a pot of tea with a friend but decided not to after being told that an extra cup will cost half the price of a pot of tea. When our orders came, we noticed water spilled from every tea pot they put on the table and they also had trouble putting a slice of cake down without knocking it over. My other friend ordered the same pot of tea as me. Hers came but mine never did, so we asked and then found out they actually combined our orders into a bigger pot with double the tea ingredients. We were not happy that we were not informed or asked beforehand, and would still have to pay for the price of two pots, so we asked to talk to the manager/owner who later agreed to charge us for one pot only. Here came the worst part. As soon as the manager stepped away, the server came back to take an order for me since there was a minimum charge per person. I seriously didn't know what the server was thinking. You have a whole table of unsatisfied customers and you wanted to make their experience even worse just because of the restaurant policy?! Who would run business like that!? We were all choked about this and had to point out one of us ordered a drink AND a cake, which could satisfy their minimum charge policy. We expected to receive good customer service in high tea place like this, so this came to a shock. Overall their food and drinks were not that impressive. The coffee one of us had was sour. Another thing to note was that their the washroom door didn't lock properly. People could open the washroom door even after it was locked from the inside. Imagine how embarrassing it was to see or be seen using the washroom! Unless I hear any excellent feedbacks about this cafe, I do not plan to return. read more

So many locations in Kerrisdale to go for tea, coffee, cakes. This one looked so welcoming from the outside, finally after a year I tried it. How disappointed I was. The good parts are as follows: The service was pretty good. The decor was nice. The coffee was alright. Unfortunately, I felt very unwelcome and kind of taken (financially) by this place. I came in with my partner to try their coffee. We were there for a quick coffee as we had a busy day. I told the waitress what I would like. She took my order and my partner decided he didn't want anything. She brought me my coffee and came back to ask me if I wanted a pastry. "No thanks" I said, "we're just here for a quick coffee" the coffee was nice but the smallest i'd ever seen. Over $6 for a small cup. She came over a couple minutes later and said "Sorry our policy is minimum charge per person" so my partner ordered a drink. Even though she didn't say how much the minimum was. Now take into account this was around 3 in the afternoon and there was only two other tables (small tables) occupied. Right away I decided to finish my coffee and go. I could understand a minimum charge if people were loitering around or if it was a Sunday and we were occupying a table ordering almost nothing while people waited for high tea, but it wasn't. This place had such promise I had planned on going for lunch here with some girlfriends but after feeling like just a wallet that wasn't squeezed tight enough I think we'll go elsewhere. read more

I stopped at this cafe and ordered a sundae while I waited for my girlfriend to be done her tasks. When she came to join me at the table, the waiter brings us a menu and leaves us to decide what we want to order. About four minutes later, she asks if we want anything else - I ask for the cheque to pay for the ice cream. She tells us that each person who sits at a table comes with a minimum charge of $4 and that if my girlfriend didn't order something, we'd have to pay an extra $4 for her (this, on top of the exorbitant $6 charge for a sundae which wasn't even that special). We attempt to order a coffee but apparently the second order has to exceed $5!! Unimpressed. Will not return. read more

Charm, character, cake and coffee. What more can one ask of a cafe? La Cuisson is the perfect welcome for my first visit to the Kerrisdale neighbourhood. The owners and staff were so gracious, accommodating and attentive of laptop-toting, dairy-sensitive and patisserie-craving self that I could not resist delaying my afternoon work/writing session with this quick review. From the furniture and decor to the impressive selection of coffees, teas and dessert on the bilingual menus (English/Chinese), it is obvious the owners take great care and personal pride in the place. I ordered an Early Grey Milk Tea which they modified with soy milk at my request and my friend ordered the Specialty Mocha. Although we were both really full from brunch, the staff and owners' enthusiasm for the homemade (but very professionally done) desserts twisted our rubber arms and we ended up ordering a slice of coffee cake, which was promptly polished off before I even thought to pull out my camera to take a photo. Opps. Guess we'll just have to order it again next time (because of course we'll be back). ^_^ read more

I went to this cafe with 11 of my friends after a huge meal, as some of the wanted a coffee. As they tried to figure out how to seat 11 people, we graciously told them that we could split up and sit at different tables. Then came the craziness, when one of us ordered an Americano. The waiter said 'sorry, that drink does not meet our minimum amount', why would a place have something on the menu that does not meet the minimum spending amount??? I did not feel like having anything since i was stuffed but was told I could not enjoy the company of my friends without spending the minimum! There are 11 of us, the place was not busy at that time and I had to leave the establishment cause I did not feel like purchasing anything at that time! Very poor customer service and I will never go there again! read more

First of all, it's OVERpriced. Coffee/tea costs over $6, tea is more expensive than Secret Garden which has way more variety, nicer atmosphere and better service. Coffee, tea and cake all tasted pretty ordinary, nothing special. Obviously this place is taking an advantage of this location.What really surprised me was after paying and ready to leave, the girl who served us came to me and demanded a tip. Isn't it up to each customer? I wasn't impressed by anything including service and I have never been "asked" to tip like that. I don't think I will ever go back. I'd rather stick to other cafes which serve better quality coffee/tea and sweets. read more

After passing this coffee shop 3 times I finally got in yesterday to have a cup of organic coffee and chestnut tart. I found this is the most excellent coffee and tart I have ever had in northern America. They have special selected coffee beans and roasted for the best flavour. Chestnut tart is home made with all natural ingredients. The coffee shop is with high end classical design. The atmosphere is relax and peaceful. I have sent e-mail to friends for my discovery of this lovely coffee shop and will make reservation for the next special coffee time. read more
