I'd honestly say we are in really tough times when a restaurant is charging $5 a pupusa. As delicious as these pupusas are, it's crazy to me that they are charging that much. On top of that, on the menu it's $10 for 2 pupusas. So I don't think it's an option to just order one. Someone correct me if I am wrong. All that being said, they're freaking delicious. I just wish they wouldn't charge so much. I really am going to have to find a spot where they charge less. But I'm probably not because it's freaking delicious. We've tried everything they offer. Chicharron, solo queso, loroco, etc. When you find a good pupusa spot, it's hard to leave that spot and try others. I'm definitely coming here often, they're worth the price. read more

Highly disappointed in their food. We ordered via door dash and got the 6 chicken and cheese "pupusas" and beans and rice and all of it was very underwhelming. We pretty much got masa pupusas. The sauce? Salsa? Don't even know what to call it other than tomato soup was served in a baggie as was the curtido. We did get two small containers of a roasted like salsa. There was really no filling at all, seemed pre made almost. Won't be ordering from here again. read more

Ok let me start off by saying I used to be a huge fan. We have been coming for a long time. The outdoor space is nice to sit and eat. HOWEVER WHAT HAPPENED TO THE FOOD??? I almost am traumatized with how poor the quality of food is now. We have always ordered fish tacos and they used to have a decent amount of fish....about the size of your palm. Today was almost disrespectful. The piece of fish was 1inch wide, 3 inches long and as thin as a chip, almost burned. For as much as we were paying I expected better. I actually asked the owner what happened and showed him my plate and his response was "it just depends what they bring me".....no offer to add more or fix anything.....just that response. It literally looked like I was eating a taco with a small slice of fish skin. It was almost $50 for 2 plates that contained 2 tacos each and also 2 beers. Pozole Pedí un pozole pero básicamente no tiene sabor es puro tomatillo verde con un poco de agua básicamente es una salsa de tomatillo con cerdo no lo coman ni lo pidan aparte es demasiado casi 18 y no está el sabor al precio que pagas. The first two times I got lunch from La Cuchara were wonderful! The owner is very nice and we grew up in the same neighborhood, so we had a lot to chat about. The food was delicious and very authentic. Great chips and the salsa, house-made, is excellent with just the right combination of spicy and hot. I liked this place so much the first time, I brought my wife there a few days later, and again the food (tamales) and the service were great! Today I stopped in to grab a quick lunch before heading out of town for the day. I ordered tamales and they were completely dry, no sauce at all. The cappuccino i ordered with my lunch was not ready until I was finished eating my lunch and it was served in a paper cup, even though I was dining in. Definitely a let down from the previous times I have been here. At least the beans were still good. This place seems to be kind of a hit and miss adventure. read more

They have the best pozole I have ever had! The service here is also really friendly!! When: we came on a random weekday night around 5pm and it wasn't too busy! Plenty of indoor seating and parking for our car! They have their own private lot! Service: very friendly! Food: we totally went overboard on the ordering since we were sure what the portions looked like and we wanted just to taste some items. -complimentary chips and salsa - salsa here is amazing!!! - Pozole : omg I cant rave enough how delicious this was. The pozole was green which was unique but the flavor was sooo good! -pork tamale: probably the best and most generously filled tamale I've ever had! - hot corn drink : this was ok, more like a cinnamon corn soup but we're glad we tried it! - Michael got a beef bistek plate and he ate that up so quickly so I'm assuming he loved it! -we also tried this crispy thick tortilla topped with pork (I forget the name) it's yummy! But I think I would have liked to try their pupusa next time. - strawberry aqua Fresca huge winner with us! Also props to the compostable straw!! Overall: we spent about $50. I ordered a carne asada burrito over the phone for takeout. Added a coke when I arrived to take home. Total $24.46. I paid with my card and left a $2 cash tip on the counter. A few days later my bank statement shows an additional $3 tip charged which I did not approve. These guys will literally steal from you. What a fun cute little place this turned into! Formerly the kinda grimey place that looked like a sombrero this place has fully transformed into a cool little spot. Food was good if a little unconventional. Lots of soups and specialties I didn't try. Atmosphere is amazing. Lots of plants and a very chill outdoor area. Coffee was really a star. Ended up here by accident as the Chinese restaurant was closed. I was attracted by the odd shape of the building & the photos of the food around the building - very colorful! Once in we were greeted by the owner who seems very nice. We ordered & got our food fast. It isn't often that I feel an establishment has earned a one star review. If I do, it'll always be the result of extremely bad service, sanitation, or food quality. In the case of La Cuchara, it boils down to the service and the food. I used to describe La Cuchara as a hidden gem, with top notch service and delicious food. Nothing but great things to say and would recommend them to just about everyone. Unfortunately, after ordering a new-to-me menue item that I thought I loved; only to find out the four times I attempted to order it again, I would be given a burrito by the same name but made differently every time. Every time the burrito got further and further away from the way it was supposed to be made. Finally ending in a burrito that seemed to be filled with table scraps, obviously things have changed. sauce, and nothing else. I ate it, I was too tired to go back out, it wasn't gross, it just wasn't what I ordered and for almost $16 for a burrito I was disappointed. That being said, my last order at La Cuchara, I explained my previous experiences with the menu item to the owner and verified what was supposed to be in it, after making it clear that I wasn't expecting anything for free, I then ordered two of the burritos. The owner explained that in the future, that I should reach out to them the day it happens so that they can address with the the person who cooked it. He apologised, stated that he couldn't give it to me for free (I hadn't asked or insinuated that I was expecting anything for free). I said that's okay, but I wanted to place the order for two, to-go. I give him my card, I'm waiting and playing solitaire on my phone, he says somethings wrong with my chip as he hands me the card back and goes to make my order. When it's done, he hands me the food and I leave. I get home and start to eat the burrito, and this time there are black beans (I did not order), no lettuce, no sour cream, and it looks like someone just took dinner scraps and mixed it all into the burrito and put three fries inside. I hate beans in burritos. My partner wasn't happy but picked over hers. I couldn't eat it, it was mushy, and not what I was expecting. So I took it back, just mine. I explained that it lacked a lot and had black beans in it and that I just wanted it made the way it was supposed to be, based on past interaction, I wasn't expecting any confrontation, because I was doing what he said to do if it wasn't done right. . He then tells me that he didn't charge me for them, as if I knew that. Which I didn't because after handing him my card and taking food I made the assumption that I'd paid, after all, that was the expectation. I thank him, inform him that I didn't know that, and because I want what I want, I will pay for this one, because I wasn't expecting the last to have been free. He wrote down the order, walked it to the back, and while he was away, I started looking my phone, he returned and said something I didn't hear. Turns out to have been that I'll have to pay for this burrito, at which my partner said "yes, that's fine," because I wasn't paying attention. His response to her was, "No one's talking to you." Yeah, and in tone you're imagining. My head popped up so fast. This dude took a calm, yet uncomfortable moment, and made it unnecessarily hostile. Before I could say something, my partner responded, "making it clear that it wasn't her intention to come off in a negative way, so there's no reason to tell me to mind my own business." Y'all, she didn't give him any attitude when she said it was fine that we had to pay for it. He followed up with how this was a conversation between us (he and I) and that she wasn't involved in the matter, so there was no need for her to talk. Understandably, she was offended. Him escalating a situation from uncomfortable-yet solution oriented, where the solution was ACTUALLY reached. To him, talking out of his ass when the person who would've been paying for the food not only acknowledges the agreed upon terms. As we were unmistakably willing to pay for the free burritos he provided prior plus the one currently on order. As a result, I cancelled my order. While doing so, his response was, "so now you're going to have me waste another burrito?" At which point I responded, "the window of us caring about your bottom line has past. That's on you." In the end, I couldn't accept the manner in which he spoke to my partner. We were coming from a place of calmness and cooperation. Yet, for whatever reason, he chose to escalate the situation AFTER a solution had been achieved. -just because a business owner comps something in response to a mess-up on their end, doesn't mean the customer is obligated to simply take what they're given as the comp item. The whole point of the comp is to demonstrate that the correction was made and that they value your dollar as much as you value their service.- Will we go back? No. read more

Great amazing delicious deserts and food is always on point. Owner is a great hard working man who has been a chef for 20 years. Highly recommend this place for the Caldo De Reis, Pupusas, and there Menudo! I've tried other places were there Menudo smell like rotten odor from the pork. So the first time I visited LaCuchara I did not know that there were two doors (the door I walked to was closed so I thought the place was closed), I was so disappointed I left because I was really craving pupusas. A couple days later I came back & realized there was a second door that they leave open. Anyways! When I walked in I was surprised to see that the place was not packed. Other than my cousin & I, there was one table of 2. Upon entering, we were immediately greeted by a nice man at the cash register. To my surprise there was more Latin food than I expected from Mexican to Salvadoran. & the prices are reasonable. We bought about 15 pupusas, 2 sopes, horchata & pineapple juice all for $60. As our order was being prepared, we sipped on our drinks & the nice man give us chips & salsa while we waited. And let me tell you, this salsa was so good & had the perfect kick of spice. Within 15 mins our food was ready. & it was all worth it. Our family never had pupusas before & they loved it. The only sad thing is we wish we ordered bigger drinks. If you're in the area, you definitely should not miss this place. It might look like a hole in the wall but the food & customer service speak for itself. read more

I was at DMV down the street and did a quick search for food near me and this little gem caught my attention. The real test for good Salvy food for me is in their yuca con chicharron and pupusas, so of course that's what I ordered. The food was freshly made, one look at that yuca and I decided to try it right then and there in the parking lot. The yuca was AMAZING! Freshly fried and crispy as well as the chicharron. I love mine with a lot of curtido and salsa, so I'll know to ask for extra next time, that would be my ONLY con. Tried the pork and cheese pupusa when I got home and it was SO GOOD! Had been craving pupusas and dropped by this place. If you're driving by, don't be fooled--the windows are tinted black from the outside but they are probably open! I got the Pupusa Loca, which was described as a personal pizza sized pupusa stuffed with beans, cheese, and jalapenos. This was massive! Get ready for a gooey cheesy filling and a thick exterior with a bite. It comes with curtido (sour cabbage slaw) and salsa. The pupusa itself is not spicy. I can't believe I finished this whole thing! Definitely filling and comforting. The building shape and interior are unique and charming and staff is super nice. I had a sip of my friend's pineapple agua fresca which was full of real pineapple goodness. I'd recommend this place if you're in the area. read more

I listened to Yelpers about the best Mexican in Vtown, it's my 1st time here & I'm impressed. There's a picture menu on the wall, the owner greets your warmly & there's plenty to choose from, including a sopes station as you walk in. I threw a Cinco de Mayo curve ball & ordered 2 revueltas papusas, and WOW. Delish! Properly crisped, no mushy parts, fresh and hot. The curtido was fresh & crisp as well. The agua fresca on the side was like a hella sweet cloudy strawberry Mexican Kool-Aid, yes! If they made their own chips, I'd add another star. I know it's a pain, but a place with such a homemade, food from scratch feel, should definitely NOT be serving dumbed-down standard chips. Parking is available on the street & in a lot outback, and there's room for outdoor seating, streetside in a sunny day. Next time, super burrito! read more

Okay, so the pupusas are really good here. Not going to lie! They are made perfectly, and the sides that go with it are really yummy too! The Yucca con Chicharron was very very disappointing. My sons father is Salvadorian so we eat this dish a lot. What they served us was like the leftover they had in a container. It had 3 strips of fat, and 1 small piece of over cooked pork. Clearly they didn't have enough to complete this dish, and they should have never sold it to us. On top of that the pork tasted very old.. We did call to complain, and they offered to refund us but this dish was completely unacceptable. I personally would have just said we are out of it, then to serve a sad plate of yucca con chicharron. Otherwise, the pupusas are good, and I'm not sure what else is good there, but now I will always be worried to order a new dish other than pupusas. read more

I have seen this spot for years before it was the diamond in the rough it is today. We had been driving by when we caught a glimpse of pupusas on a poster. We immediately turned in to the parking lot. We were skeptical at first but our skepticism turned into excitement. We were greeted by a gentleman named Eduardo. He was patient with us and was very knowledgeable about all the dishes. Eduardo took our order after helping us decide what to pick. We ordered some pupusa's and some sopes with an order of chille relleno. Everything that we were served was perfect. I was impressed by the high quality of the food. You can truly tell that everything is hand made. The tortillas are hand made and are amazing. If you know you know. I had not one gripe about La Cuchara and the service or food. I will definitely be returning to this tasty spot. To our surprise Eduardo the person that gave us such great service all along ended up being the owner. When I have a craving for authentic hand made from scratch pupusas, tortilla, and everything else on their flavor packed menu I will come running right back. read more

Had not dined at this location since it was Pepes 20 years ago. Over the years several restaurants have occupied this space. Very few cars were parked there and so it always looked a little depressing. The place had finally closed a few months ago . It reopened recently and I began to see a pretty good amount of cars there, I decided to eat lunch there today and it was OK. I had the carne asada with beans and salad, They make their own tortillas which is a pleasant surprise. The plate also came with french fries which could have been great but were wilted. Prices are very reasoanble and unlike my other favorite Mexican eatery Tesoro the parking is not in a sketchy neighborhood. I will be back and it wont be another 20 years read more

This place is, hands down, the ABSOLUTE BEST Mexican restaurant in Vallejo!!! First of all everything on the menu is fresh and lively. Nothing tastes frozen or store bought. The place is clean and inviting and the owner is warm and treats you like a friend. The best thing is that the sopes are made by hand! I took one bite and was instantly transported to my grandmother's kitchen from when I was 7 years old. The food here is not only spectacular but it is genuinely authentic! The owner offered me some cabesa tacos. Now I'm not usually a fan of it but since everything else was so amazing I figured, "Why not give it a try?" To my shock and awe it tasted fantastic! You won't find food like this just anywhere. In fact no other restaurant in Vallejo even comes close to it! Do yourself a favor and check out this restaurant. We went last Saturday. My mom loves menudo and my husband chilaquiles. This place has both and thought it would be a good compromise. First thing, mom is a mature woman and has issues walking. No stairs and easy parking to front door is a plus. The owner is friendly and welcoming. We looked over the items they have to offer and I went with menudo like my mom. Can I just say, this IS the best menudo (yes, even better than mine) ever!!! The owner said they take a lot of pride in their food and it shows. Coffee was better than most. My husband got chilaquiles and was happy. We also ordered 3 different tacos; cabeza, carne asada and alpastor. My favorite was the alpastor! The owner said they had a food truck kn El Sobrante and opened this place. Still has the old name that was there before, but it is actually La Cuchara. This is my new spot for Mexican food! Oh, btw I'm Mexican and can cook all of these foods. But I dont have to anymore if I'm wanting a break from the kitchen. ;) I was told to try the pupusas next time.
