We were craving Cuban food. Our old go-to, La Taverna Cubana, has closed up shop. The Uber Eats reviews were good. The food was absolutely atrocious. The Cuban sandwiches were tasteless. We had to add more pickles (each had just one) and mustard just to make them edible. The french fries and beef empanadas were inedible. We took one bite and tossed them in the trash where they belonged. The "fried plantains" were actually tostones -- and served with a container of olive oil and crushed garlic. According to my Los Angeles friends, this is THE best Cuban restaurant in town. I had the opportunity to find out for myself. I'm Cuban, so I was curious about how the food would be. I was shocked at how good it was! Do not let the humble storefront deceive you. I lived in Miami for a number of years and I can say that La Cubana's food is as good as any Cuban food I had in Miami. Even the Cuban bread. Impressive. We had the chicken fricasee with moros and maduros, a pan con bistec, and an Ironbeer. All excellent. I have been dining at La Cubana since they were on Colorado, then Maryland and now at their current location. I don't think I care to return. The wait staff is not good, they were not attentive and VERY slow. I had ordered lechón which is a staple of their menu just to find out fifteen minutes after ordering that they had run out. Being that I am of Cuban descent there is this never ending journey to find the best Cuban food in California. Have tried many with similar disappointing results. Now on to the holy grail of the west coast..... La Cubana is a very humble restaurant in Glendale that has been around since 1973. It has moved locations throughout the years, but one thing that has never changed is the authenticity of the cuisine you are served. You come to La Cubana solely for "A Taste Of Cuba" in its true essence. Now on to the food..... You can start with the papa rellena which has tasty picadillo filling and is not greasy or squished. If you are an adventurous eater I would go with in order of preference, the 1) Rabo Encendido or 2) Lengua en Salsa de Tomate. Both are marinated and cooked so perfectly that the meat disintegrates as soon as you take a bite. The top traditional dishes that you cannot go wrong with are the Ropa Vieja that is made the traditional way here (with a saucy tomato base). Heavenly. Drives me crazy going to a CR and they serve tips vieja dry. Don't mess with my emotions please. If you are a pork lover the Lechón Asado is the best around. Very Large juicy portion served and is marinated with Lechonera as well as citrus . The flavors are abundant with not too much comino which is a good thing. Order a side of congris con yucca or frijoles negros (Amazing!!!!!!). Boliche Asado is excellent. Dessert: go with the Dulce de Leche Cuban flan....OMG!!!!! With a cortadito on the side and you will not eat anything else for the rest of the day as your life is complete. Don't miss this spot if you are in LA or OC. Been there a few times over the last 7 or so years. Good food and the place has a down home/someone's living room feel to it somehow. Nice staff. I called before going there the last time to make sure they were going to be open. They said "yes, until 8". I show up with a date around 530 but the front doors were locked...and chained from the outside! There were folks inside sitting at tables so I called...but no answer. I hate to do this, but the food here was not good. Very nice people, and prepared my to-go order fast, but that's about it. I got a Cuban sandwich, steak sandwich, plantains, and rice/beans. The beans were the only decent thing. Neither sandwich seemed like it had been on a plancha, as the break was not crisp nor was the cheese on the Cuban melted. The steak sandwich has large fries instead of small matchstick, and they were super soggy and unseasoned. The steak was also unseasoned but also super tough. Unseasoned seemed ti be the common denominator here. The Cuban also had no mayo or pickles, and the pork was like leather. Rather unfortunate, but I hope I was just a bad order for the day and this isn't the standard. Hope everyone else has a better experience. read more

I've been going to this restaurant for about 20 years, and the food has always been good. I also order for Thanksgiving and Christmas as well. I picked up my food on Sunday, Christmas eve. I was having people over for dinner. Well, I have to say it's the worse food I've ever purchased. The lechon wasn't cooked all the way, it was pink, it was dried and had no flavor. I ended up cooking the pork a little bit more, which made it even drier, and having to add seasoning salt as it had no flavor whatsoever. Even the rice was hard and had no flavor, it was like steam rice. I wish I could say I saved the day, but hardly anybody ate it. I ended up throwing everything away. The only thing I kept were the plantains. What a disaster! It's sad that the owner or the chef didn't bother to taste the food before getting it ready to give to clients. Being transplants from Florida, it's hard for us to find "authentic" Cuban food in the area. Yes, there are several Cuban restaurants out here in LA, (including a well known bakery/restaurant with multiple stores whose name starts with a P and rhymes with orthos). But I've noticed most Cuban restaurants in LA serve food that is missing that authentic Caribbean "criollo" flavor. Most Cuban food out here taste Mexican. Nothing wrong with Mexican- I LOVE Mexican food. But if I want Mexican food, I'll get Mexican food, if I want Cuban I want - Cuban. And that's what La Cubana provides. And it doesn't have to be anything complex. Last night we had grilled chicken breast planks (we ask for light seasoning), white rice, black beans, yellow plantains and garlic Yuca- and it took me back to Florida where I lived hall of my adult life (BTW I am not Cuban). It's hard to imagine how many get the beans wrong, but not La Cubana. I still haven't tried my staple (breaded steak with grilled onions with a hint of lemon juice), but I'll update once I try it. We've been to La Cubana at least a half a dozen times during the pandemic and have always split the above mentioned meal with the wife and I always have leftovers for lunch the next day (i.e: nice sized portions). Lastly, the staff is always welcoming, friendly, professional, and coincidentally, Cuban. read more

With consideration that this restaurant is probably operating at limited staff, I'm being generous by giving them 3 stars. I would not suggest dining here anytime soon. They literally have 1 waitress and I'm assuming 1 cook. Service this week was quite bad. Our placements, menus and silverware were all dumped at the edge of the table and the waitress walked away. Same for the drinks. The food was ok. Many of their most popular dishes weren't available so we settled for the camarones al ajillo (garlic shrimp), rabo encendido (oxtails) , sweet plantains, moros (white rice and black beans mixed), fries and the guava and cream cheese pastry. All of the items were very very basic. For these items to be almost $20 a dish I expected better. Our food looked nothing like the pictures I see in the reviews. This was our first time dining here and although I'm not in a rush to return, I'll probably wait some months before I do. I feel this place has potential but with the staff being inundated it didn't hit the mark. read more
