La Coronilla was a pleasant surprise. I entered into this humble restaurant welcomed with a wonderful smell and family like atmosphere. They have a very extensive menu and delicious looking fruit drinks. The music was lively but not too loud. The staff seemed busy but the customers content. I placed a to-go order ( that had a $1 fee) and was also charged an additional ($2.70) for using my card. I thought it was odd that the waitress calculated the price of the food in her head. They didn't have an automated system that factored in tax. I just think that could lead to over or under charging. I chose the chicken fajita plate which included rice and beans. I did not receive and quesadilla shells or a to go serving of chips and salsa. Overall the fajitas packed quite a punch! The flavor and spice level were some of the best I've tasted in fajitas. You can definitely detect each authentic note! The only downside to the dish was that I found pieces of chicken that weren't the same temperature as the rest. Pretty good authentic Mexican food for a decent price. There is plenty of parking and seating inside with a smaller area out front to eat. There is also a little bar area inside as well. There are plenty of options on the menu including some items typically only offered on the weekends at other Mexican restaurants. Was my first time here. Looking at the menu I thought everything price was pretty reasonable for "authentic Mexican food". Ending up spending $45 for LUNCH for a small cheese dip, 1 soft taco, 1 quesadilla, and a medium margarita. The margarita they charged me $9 and then $10 for the alcohol in it. I moved away to Alabama to play college golf. As a young, homesick California transplant, I thought that meant the complete disappearance of my beloved Mexican food. Surely, I wouldn't be able to find any quality taquerias here, let alone any that could hold a candle to the ones back home. The late-night taco escapades would have to wait. Enter La Coronilla. Who would have thought that one of the most authentic, delicious taquerias I've ever seen could be found deep in the heart of Montgomery? This place was my absolute saving grace during my time as a student-athlete. I look back fondly on all the times I stopped in to reward myself with some tacos after a long week of grinding, both in the classroom and in competition. The Lengua tacos are by far the best I have ever had, and it is not even close; the meat is somehow perfectly crispy on the outside while maintaining lengua's incredible trademark tenderness at the same time -- nowhere else have I seen this accomplished. It is unbelievably rich, unctuous, fatty, and flavorful. The Al Pastor here is also dynamite; it's beautifully seasoned, has just the right amount of kick, and the pineapple notes really come through. The Chorizo is great as well; a little sweet, a little smoky, a little spicy. The Carne Asada's got a great char on it, and is also well-executed. The place just screams authenticity, and has generally friendly service as well -- though I find it much easier to communicate with the staff in Spanish, rather than English. I'm going to be honest -- having graduated this past spring, there are not very many things that I will miss about Alabama. That said, this place is definitely one of them, and it pains me to think that I may never have the chance to eat here again. If you are looking for authentic Mexican food, this is your place. I've been here various times and I have yet to be disappointed. Its fairly small, and it is a family owned restaurant. I love the aesthetic of this restaurant because its very homey and truly gives off the illusion of being somewhere in Mexico. Even their dishes look pretty original, and some are chipped. Their food tastes amazing, and their portions are huge. I can't ever finish a plate in one sitting. Drink wise, their margaritas and orchata are delicious and you can definitely taste the tequila in the margaritas. Also, their flan (dessert) is pretty amazing. Like I mentioned before, they are family owned and it looks as if only the family members work there. They don't have a lot of workers so their service can be a little slow, but overall worth the wait. The owner is always there and is really nice and makes sure to personally speak to every table. Food is GOOD. Queso could have been warmer but the overall meal was delicious. Ordered bowl of guacamole, ceviche, fajitas, and pollo loco. Margarita and micheladas were also delicioso. Here is the deal, I have been coming to this place every time I come to Montgomery, it's my go to place. I love the food here and the drinks are great too. My personal favourite is their beef tongue tacos! Extremely tender and flavourful. The only minus thing about this place is that most of the times I go, I get servers who don't really speak English and the menu is only in Spanish too. Obviously this place went to china.com to get all these 5 star reviews. Stopped by once and ordered a marg at the bar. The only waitress/bartender working that day asked if we wanted a top shelf margarita so we asked what the difference is. She didn't know. 5 min later she said they pour grand marigner on top. Don't let the outside of the building deter you. Inside is fine, and the staff is amazing. This was by far the most authentic and best Mexican food in the area. I spent many months as a gringo living in Mexico, and it's near impossible to find legit food anywhere we're stationed. The tamales are some of the best I've ever had. The Pazole was delicious, and the pastor and steak tacos were great. The sauna comes with a fresh blend of onions, jalapeno and cilantro to add as desired. I've been twice now over the past month. It's a decent restaurant with a fun authentic looking environment. The wait staff is nice enough and the food is decent. They have a 4 taco meal and you cannot swap out 2 for diffent types. they must all be the same. Kinda annoying. Meat was good the first time, very dry the second. Could have just been the day. The absolute worst food experience ever! Once upon a time this restaurant was my go to spot for tacos but after tonight it will be my last time ever going here. First off, our carne asada and Al pastor taco meat was dry, burnt and oily with no flavor. The corn tortilla was extremely dry, the side of rice and beans was salty with no distinct flavor to tell them apart, and everything was a complete disappointment and we will not be returning. I really had high hopes since I hadn't eaten here in a while but sadly it was a waste of my time and money and I cannot recommend this place. This was a togo order so we made it all the way home hoping to enjoy a delicious meal only to end up throwing everything away. You have been warned! Kind of a strange experience. This place is certainly not a Tex-Mex place. It doesn't have a Jalisco tradition - that will mean something to people from the southwest - and if I had to guess I would say the food tradition is from southern Mexico. Maybe the state of Guerrero. Don't expect a normal cup of coffee. They bring you a cup of hot water with a jar of instant Nescafe. Not the end of the world. Also, the air conditioning is completely distracting. It's basically a swamp cooler that is beyond loud when it's on. And they had paranormal activity two playing on TV. Food was decent. Good seasoning, decent portions. My wife asked for a egg, potato, and cheese burrito (she's from California), and got a gigantic burrito with those items plus rice, tomatoes, and lettuce. I asked for basic potato/egg and chorizo/egg tacos on flour tortillas. I got something resembling that on corn tortillas. Overall it is not what I expected which is not their fault. So I used to live in El Paso for 3 years, and since we moved to Alabama, it's been hard to find an authentic Mexican restaurant. l knew I was in the right place when I saw menudo on the menu. The pico and salsa are perfect, and I ordered the chicken soup and Mole enchiladas. Great big margaritas,they are not shy in the amount of tequila they put in there. I had the shrimo quesadillas with rice and refried beans. Which were excellent. They give u chips and 2 kinds of freshly made salsas, they were spicy in the good way. Had the horchata (aguas frescas) for dessert. It was said earlier but it's true. From the outside this place is on a frontage road off the main road but easily visible. You wouldn't even notice it if not for being on Yelp. We were there late on a cold and rainy Sunday night. No other diners. Waitress/cook? Was very accommodating though I think her English was limited. We had been thinking about fajitas so we ordered chicken and shrimp. Each plate had a small lettuce salad with tomato's cucumbers avocado and sour cream. There was also rice a retried beans. Very nice addition. The fajitas themselves were grill with onions tomatoes and peppers. Very different from some chain type places. Delious and very authentic home made taste. Since the closing of my favorite taqueria (El Cantaro), I have been on the hunt for another sit down Mexican restaurant that serves authentic cuisine. After eating at La Coronilla a couple of weeks ago, I can say that I have found my new favorite! First, the owner is fantastic. I went by and had no idea what I wanted. He spent about 10 minutes chatting with me and suggesting options (most of which were not on the menu!). I ended up with beef cheek tacos, guacamole that they made specifically for me, and pineapple water and horchata. They make all of their horchata and fruit waters daily, and you can absolutely tell. Fabulous, really authentic Mexican. Not the crummy TexMex from a can that you get all over the US. My wife worked in Central America for 5 years; and we have spent a lot of time since in Mexico. This place is the real deal. The tamales in corn husks are wonderful - light, moist but not mushy, bursting with masa flavor. Can't speak to the drinks, that wasn't why we were there.
