I judge a good Mexican restaurant by its chips and guac, and Cucos' chips and guac are VERY GOOD!!! I ordered a large to share with a friend, and it was actually too much guac since we both were also eating an entree. So, if you want to just nibble on something, go with a small. HOWEVER!!!!! I believe chips and salsa should be complimentary at a Mexican restaurant, but they are not here. :/ As predicted, I ordered the chicken fajitas, which actually comes with a nice-sized dollop of guac! The spread took over the whole table with the lettuce, tortillas and grilled chicken. Surprisingly, it didn't come on a sizzling pan. I want to note that there's a cute outdoors patio, but it's a bit tight. The tables are really close together, so conversations were heard by everyone, which is fine. read more

I was a regular back may years ago but I still have not gotten use to the new location. I seldom visit even though they are close. I have always loved their beef nachos. Unfortunately, the only thing nice I can say about my visit here is that the sprite was good. I ordered the chicken fajitas, my mom ordered some chicken and rice meal, and my dad the steak fajitas. When it arrived it looked like it was not going to be good, and the first little taste confirmed. Just "so-so". The food wasn't bad per se, but wasn't great. Very average, flavors were pretty mediocre. Staff was friendly and arrive at lunch time was quick. The place is clean and efficient, and point you are around, with plenty of street (paid) parking. Better options in the area though, if you have a car. read more

We visited Cucos Mexican Cafe due to location Yelp reviews. I was so glad that I decided to try Cucos. It is located in Downtown Montgomery, AL and walking distance from the federal courthouse. The restaurant was very modern and chic and perfect for an up and coming downtown area. We visited during a busy lunch rush and was immediately seated. The waitress took our drink orders and returned shortly to take our lunch orders. I ordered the lunch burrito which came with rice and was surprisingly huge. The burrito was the length of the oval plate. The ingredients seemed fresh and not sitting under a heat lamp in the kitchen. Everyone else in our party enjoyed their meals as well. This is in my opinion the worst Mexican food I've ever had. I don't know if it was because I went in during non-busy hours, but the food was cold and basically that food your mom would cook as a child and call it Mexican food. There was zero taste, no zing, and definitely no Mexican influence to the food. The margarita wasn't any better that I had from dinner. I went to Cuco's for my birthday last week. It was quite frankly the perfect ending to a perfect day. I hadn't been to a Cuco's since my prom night in May of 1997 and when you're 17 and in a tux and still get a kids menu... but I digress. It's funny how even in the dressed up incarnation of the chain you can still get the same feeling of going to your favorite restaurant next to the college as a kid. The guacamole was the deep green I remembered from 20 years ago and have always looked for since. The menu was still a two sided sheet, with no frills. The prices were pretty darn close to what I remember from the 90s. The service was amazing (even adjusting for the low bar set by that guy who gave me a kids menu on prom night). The service was fast. The portions were generous. At the end of the night, I was shocked at how cheap the bill was. The food was amazing. While the fried ice cream doesn't come in a big glass anymore and instead comes inside a fried tortilla, it still made me remember being that kid who nailed his report card and got one to himself. As a testament to how many great memories Cuco's has provided over the years, when I posted about my birthday on Facebook, a few too many of my friends from back home in Louisiana were more excited about Cuco's still being open than they were my birthday. I'm not going to ding you for that. The fajitas are awesome after all and so are the memories. It was great to sit there and look at how much has changed since 1997 with something that hasn't. Very poor service. Waited over an hour, and still never had our food brought out. 1 hour in they let us know that they didn't have enough food for all the dishes so we had to order something else. They never refilled our drinks, or even checked on us. The only time they came out is to give us bad news about how unprepared they were for customers. Do not reccomend. Dinner and a "Show" ends in a Never-go After attempting to get dinner at several places over at the Alley and learning that an hour wait was the average time before we'd be seated, we decided to take a chance at Cuco's over on Dexter. What a mistake. We were seated and brought fresh chips and "salsa." The chips were excellent: thin, crispy, hot and not oily. Sadly, that was the only thing good. The "salsa" was pureed tomatoes and overly large chunks of raw onion. No heat, and no other salsa save for the preservative_ and chemical-filled habanero sauce on the table. Next! After several minutes, a young girl who had been chatting with a woman in a not entirely clean sweatshirt as they sat at the bar, came over and introduced herself as our waiter. By that time, we were ready to order drinks and the entree, so we did. The girl soon returned to the bar to have a seat. My drink sat on the bar until after my entree, the fajita platter, was delivered. The entree was, in a word, terrible -- and that was before tasting it. Rice that was mixed with ketchup or some similar sauce. Soggy onions that were fully translucent. Meat that clearly had been boiled, was grey, and was barely cut into the strips it should have been. Black beans that had been microwaved into a thick, black paste with an accidental sprinkle of cheap grocery-store cheese. We didn't eat much of it, and we passed the time counting the number of employees at the bar (at one point, four -- including the woman in the sweatshirt who turned out to be the manager) and patrons (two at the bar, three parties -- including us -- in the dining area). then came the "show": the cook entered the dining area. There had not been any customers since we had been seated, and he came out of the otherwise quiet backline (kitchen) area. Stuffed into a frighteningly tight grey Cuco's T-shirt splattered with stains and probably a bit of everyone else's meal grease from all day earlier, he wandered first to the manager, then to all the other employees sitting/standing idly at the bar. He then went outside, lit a cigarette and had a seat in the outside dining area directly beside the door. Once he finished ashing on the ground, the butt joined the ash pile with former butts. He then reëntered the main dining area and made his way to a table where he took a seat. He remained there the rest of our stay, watching the few patrons remaining and the TVs over the bar. He brought us menus multiple times...um...we ordered already...and when I was just sitting there after finishing the appetizer and my partner had received his food, he asked me if I wanted anything else...yes I do...the entrée I ordered! What a great addition to downtown Montgomery. The decor is beautiful inside with a mix of modern and the historic - I loved the exposed original brick and then the handmade wall art from Mexico. The food is absolutely the best Mexican in Montgomery by far. Friendly servers greet you at the door and are exceptional at explaining the different menu items. Location and atmosphere were great! The food was mediocre... with the exception of the white cheese dip (it was delicious)! I went with a group of 12 and even with three waitresses they couldn't keep up. Someone in our group got tamales and I am not sure what she got but they did not look like authentic tamales. She did say it tasted good, but again, not tamales. I did like that the plates dinner sides were served in hard shells instead of bowls- creative and yummy! Overall a terrible experience. Our group came in at 4 pm on a Tuesday. There was only one server who when asked what Mexican beers they had on tap had to go back to the kitchen to get clarification. My family and I LOVE Cucos. This is a different type of Mexican food: born in New Orleans, it is a Tex/Mex/New Orleans blend that is truly unique. I've been visiting Cucos since around 1988 and the service is always great and the food is consistently delicious. Their chips are my wife's absolute favorite - thin and crispy - better than any other Mexican restaurant we have visited. I love their El Presidente meal and their lunch chicken fajitas, but you can't go wrong with anything on their menu. Oscar owns the restaurant (along with a few others) and you can usually see him hustling behind the scenes. Do yourself a favor and visit! read more

Chicken enchiladas were good, however I was not given a fork to eat or napkins. Listen to waitress discuss a love interest while I waited 10 minutes for her to see I was not eating and needed a fork. The plate itself was so hot I burned my arm. I understand hot plates but I couldn't touch this plate the whole meal, that is how hot it was. Waitress never came to check on me the entire time until I stared her down to get her attention then motion for her. Ss sad. I wanted Pinto beans with my meal, I was never asked but got black beans.
