We LOVED our dining experience at La Cave du Fromager! The underground dining area was enchanting, the food delicious, and wine selection was extensive. I highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time as we were extremely lucky to have gotten a table as a walk-in. Lastly, this is a cash only establishment, so be sure to have cash on hand before dining!

Young people don't like grease. Eat greasy! - a sign at Cave du Fromager (rough translation) We couldn't leave France without trying fondue! And we're glad we did. Well ... not exactly fondue. Fondue is just the melted cheese. What we ordered was raclette, which is pretty much a charcuterie plate where you put the cheese slices on a stove, then eat it with cured meats, bread, potatoes, etc. We started off with an appetizer of croquettes filled with melted cheese and garnished with caramelized onions! If you know us, you know how much we love our caramelized onions - Jason especially! They were a bit on the filling side for an appetizer (especially with all the melted cheese), but nonetheless, we're glad we tried it! Like most greasy food, the first few bites were delicious! Mind blowing, even! The cheese flowed right from the stovetop to the meats, and we ate it when it was piping hot while blowing steam out of our mouths. There's a reason why the French are famous for cheese! I really wish I knew what type of cheese it was, but all I know is that it was the most ideal type for me - really not too strong (I don't like blue, goat, or sheep's cheese usually), and very very soft! However, like most greasy food, the pace of eating was really not sustainable. We got full real fast (hence the minus one star). It was a fantastic last meal in France, but I will warn that you will likely not be able to finish all of it unless you're really hungry! (in fact, the next table over, two people offered to give away the remainder of their meal - more than half! - because they were too full lol)

You'd never know this underground restaurant exists from the outside. Super cool cozy cave feel with walls lined with brick and wine. Like some of my other favorite restaurants we stumbled upon in nice there is no wine menu and you just tell the waiter what type of wine you want and they bring you a recommendation to try - it's great! The menu is very cheese heavy, with a few different forms of delicious cheeses. We got the baked Camembert which was similar to a baked Brie with potatoes to dip in and salad, as well as the tartiflette, which stole the show and was similar to a baked lasagna / scalloped potatoes with cream, cheese, and pork belly. Great service and a very fun vibe, would definitely recommend!

Wonderful and fun! We shared fondue and couldn't finish it between the two of us. Had lovely red wine the owner makes (perfect line on market there!). BRING CASH!! They don't except cards. We took a chance not making a reservation and waited outside as soon as they opened all the non reservation people filled it up. Moral of the story: make a reservation. Worth the stop!

Mmm, La Cave du Fromager was an absolutely delicious discovery nestled in the charm of Old Town. I had turned to Yelp for foodie recommendations knowing that I'd be heading to Nice for work and this was a 'must try.' I called after work one night hoping to secure a reservation for one and, I did! An hour later, I was seated and ready to enjoy my first glass of wine (btw, all glasses of wine are 7euros and paired nicely with your order). To start, I tried the caramelized foie gras from gers and sourdough brioche with Jame's chutney paired with a glass of Vinoceros Ombre du soir. The flavor paring was complex, interesting, unique and surprisingly delicious. I then opted for a main course of chicken Wellington with porcini mushrooms, truffle mash, beans from the countryside and jus, paired with a crisp white. Overall, the wine, the ambiance, the food was all delicious and delightful. I'm glad I dined here and discovered it on Yelp!

Fantastic! Tucked down one of the many interesting, maze-like alleyways in old town... dining here is a delight. The cave atmosphere is lovely, the service is super friendly, helpful and attentive and the food is nothing short of spectacular. I had the tartiflette and it was out of this world. Very rich but a reasonably sized portion. Incredible flavors. The home baked bread is also fantastic and my friend enjoyed the asparagus risotto as well. Our server was kind and funny and beyond helpful with her wine recommendation. She also pointed us in the direction of two other top notch dinner restaurants in the area which was much appreciated. I really can't say enough good things about our experience here. It was one of the most memorable meals of our trip to France. You really must make it a point to go, if you are in the area.

Awesome experience! Right in the middle of the old town and an awesome gem for food and wine lovers. More options than just that of course. The seating area is downstairs in a wine cellar, although it's more of a restaurant feel than a wine cellar feel. The service was amazing, best in all of France that we received for a non Michelin rated place. Our server told us about all the food and the sommellier gave us the exact wine we wanted. I asked for a red and funky and he brought us an Australian Cinsault! For food we ordered the cheese Fondant with vegetables, their sausage dish, their pork tartar, and their chicken. I highly recommend the chicken and the tartar. The fondant cheese was a little bit sour for our liking but they had other cheese options so maybe choose the three cheese bland instead. And there weren't too many vegetables with the cheese but their homemade sourdough bread made up for that. Honestly we cane because we read a review here that was one star rating and the guests judged it for their cheap tables, bad wine, and change in management. Well I thought that was a bad reason to give a bad review and I came here to give it a chance and Mathew and his crew gave me better than what I wanted and I left feeling like a made some new friends. Will recommend this place and will come back for sure.

Agree with one of the reviews... best meal I've had in France in 7 days!! Great atmosphere, the staff were great in explaining the food and very attentive. We had the charcuterie with meat and cheese, the beef stew and a few beers. Plenty of food for two. The beef just melted away and was wonderful!!

My boyfriend and I had a great time in the vintage cheese cave. We were greeted by a friendly and energetic French man and manager, Jean Michel and he found us a nice table in the corner of the wine cellar and served us the most amazing, "to die for" croquettes, charcuterie and fondue. At the end of dinner he gave us an herbal shot to help with digestion and we left with our bellies full. The staff is very hardworking and the food is excellent Mahalo from Hawaii, Jean Michel. I love the smoky quartz! Aloha

Well! The food was so so. I was not amazed. After browsing Yelp I found this restaurant and it got great reviews. So me and my friends checked it out and well... Not WOW but ok. We ordered 3 starters. The squid corn polenta but I don't think it was polenta more like corn pure. But it was good enough to eat. The aubergine and buratta was good. A bit tasteless for me but the others liked it. And as the third starter, we ordered the cheese platter. I mean, it's cheese. You really can't go wrong w cheese. We also tried the pasta with lemon and dried fish eggs. Very disappointing as the sauce was bitter. But what I found most surprising was the buratta tomato salad. That was yum. The chocolate fondue w caramel sauce was yum. read more

I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Nice. The location makes it a perfect spot for taking a stroll around Vieille Ville after dinner. The ambiance of the restaurant is unique in its cave like surroundings lit with candles. Also, the noise level is low so you can actually have a stress free conversation over dinner. The service was excellent with warm & welcoming staff who paired our dinner with the perfect wine. Last, but not least, this was the best tasting meal I've had during my stay in Nice. I recommend the tartiflette as a main course and for dessert the chocolate eclair. read more
I came here with 3 friends and the food divided opinions. I liked my cheese-bacon-potato-creme dish, one friend had a pasta and one the pork rib and they thought their dishes were ok but unfortunately one of us only tasted and then couldn't eat her horse mackerel tartar. All a matter of opinion though. But we all agreed that the restaurant itself was absolutely gorgeous at a beautiful spot on a narrow street in the old town, the wine was fun and very tasty, and service was definately the best we had during our stay in Nice. I do recommend it! read more

This has been my best meal in Nice so far. I ordered the porcini mushrooms stuffed with brie, prevail wrapped in ham and pain perdu with strawberries and cream. All of it was delicious. The setting - a cave-like place in the marche behind the statue of Apollo near Place Masséna - and the staff made the dining experience even better. read more

This was the best place that we ate at in Nice. We didn't make a reservation but we're seated immediately. Great selection of wine and paired the wine exactly to our tastes. We ordered the risotto and pasta and both were delicious. The staff was exceptionally friendly and the atmosphere was casual yet classy. This is perfect if you are looking for a nice cheesy dish, but they also have lactose free and vegetarian options. The meals we ate were worth the price that we paid! read more

Although we were a long way from home (Colorado) we felt very welcome and comfortable at this restaurant. The food was amazing, we both had the croque madame sandwich and it was delicious! The wine was equally as good as the food and the "cave like" setting was remarkable. I cannot rave about this place enough, it was my favorite part of our Europe vacation. We will be back! read more

Amazing fondue and great servers who paired organic wine with your meal! Would definitely recommend!
I read all the reviews on this place so I was excited to try it out, but from the name and the pictures I thought it used to be a place where they made cheese...that's what it looked like and what I didn't know from the reviews is that its a type of cheese restaurant. There was cheese in tons of menu items...this was great for me since I adore cheese. The place itself was lovely and cozy, dark really, but nice. The service was fantastic and the food was great. We were four people and tasted everything. I tried the smoked eggplant dish, fois gras which was amazing and the tagliatelle....imagine in a huge Parmesan cheese wheel some cognac is poured in to burn and melt the cheese, with sage as well....the tagliatelle is then thrown in there and coated....it was delicious although I think I would have liked a bit of cream on it since the cognac and sage were both strong flavors....needless to say, I ate every drop. I will go back here for sure. read more

Wow! Another outstanding establishment found thanks to Yelp! We couldn't have been any happier with this whole experience. We shut the place down and had the chance to speak with the Owner/Chef's brother. After speaking with him you quickly understand that they take pride in the food they select and serve to their customers. These guys are from the country side of France and understand that the importance of selecting and serving high quality, organic food. Also, wine was organic too and was just amazing. If and when we are back in Nice we will for sure be coming back here! read more

A very fun dining experience. The downstairs cellar was intimate and memorable, and the cheese and fondue were delicious. The table next to us complained of a strong cheese smell but it's a cheese restaurant so I think that's probably ok. And remember to consume a minimum of 0.75L of white wine per person. That's critical when enjoying that much cheese. read more

Well I liked this restaurant so much I went there twice in the week I was visiting Nice. Our tour guide on a food tour had mentioned that it was her favorite restaurant, so we had to try it out. The first time we went we got same day reservations for about 9:30 at night. We ordered the ham appetizer and a bottle of wine. I ordered the vegetables fondue and my boyfriend ordered a pasta that was tossed in Parmesan. They we both delicious. The service was also very helpful. I waited to review it because I knew we were going back and I wanted to see if I'd be just as happy the second time. We went back because we had wanted a specific potato dish they had when we were there. We made reservations 2 days ahead this time. We ordered the cheese appetizer and was very pleased with the assortment. Unfortunately, the dish we went for had changed because as we had been told by our guide, the menu is constantly changing. I decided to order the warm Camembert cheese with potato and salad. I was not disappointed. The potato was cooked phenomenally and the cheese stayed warm my whole meal. My boyfriend got the pig cheek stewed meat and was also very happy with the flavored. Service remained good on our second visit as well. I'm not sure how I'll manage now that I have to leave all these amazing flavors! read more

Wow! One of the best places we have eaten. The foie gras was fantastic. For the main course we had a dish with potato, onion, slow roasted pork baked in a ramekin with cheese...sooo good. This place is in a stone wine cellar. Very unique decor and location. You have to try it. read more

A gem among many gems on the Cote D'Azur. Truly outstanding bread and cheese. It is hard to find bad bread and cheese in this area, but they've managed to outdo themselves. I would be happy spending my last night here, drinking red wine and stuffing myself with bread and cheese! read more

Amazing...favorite meal in Nice. The menu looks as though it changes often...but we loved both appetizers (pumpkin goat cheese soup and foie gras with aged parmesan and caramelized onions) and the main dishes (1. A richly cheesy mix with potatoes, bacon, and onions and 2. Rabbit wrapped in a cured bacon stuffed with swiss chard on a bed of buttered cabbage with a drizzle of cognac sauce) were to die for...I've saved my favorite part for last: the server/co-owner recommends wine for each person based on their taste/price point to match the chosen dishes! Top it off with the fact that you are dining in an old wine cellar and you have a very unique and special dining experience! Do it. Oh, make reservations, especially on the weekend. read more

We enjoyed the cheese, homemade bread and wine. The staff was very warm and welcoming and explained the menu and pairings well. We had our last dinner in Nice here and glad we did. It was a welcome change from the street side tourist scene and thrilled to see no pizza or spaghetti on the menu. We went last week and really liked the cheese fondue served with fresh steamed veggies for dipping along with the fresh crusty bread they serve. We also had the steak which was served with tasty scalloped potatoes. They say they will only cook the steak rare because it's a quality piece of meat so we went for it. It was served medium rare by my standards. I wouldn't be deterred from getting the steak if you are a meat lover. The fondue and steak entrees along with a bottle of Rose were enough for both of us so we didn't order dessert. Pretty cool ambiance but it does smell like cheese, so if you don't like that smell you may want to pass. read more

Went in on a Wednesday night in June, but the restaurant was full. Made a reservation for the following night instead. All of the seating is downstairs, in the cave, which is quieter and cooler than the surrounding restaurants. The staff speak English and were very hospitable. From the menu printed in English, I had the fois gras followed by the cheese fondue with vegetables. Very delicious and filling. With a glass of wine, the bill came to 38 Euros, which is reasonable. I would definitely go there again. read more

Amazing meal for all of my fellow cheese aficionados. My hubs and I ordered way too much food that we left way over stuffed. I highly recommend the cheese selection or focaccia bread with burrata cheese for an appetizer. The burrata is so soft, creamy & delicious. It melts in your mouth & tastes amazing the focaccia, arichokes & aged ham it accompanies. The staff is very warm, welcoming and provides you with thorough knowledge of the menu. Came here on my last day in the French Riviera after being budget-conscious all week (read: sandwiches, grocery store, and Paul bakery) and reading great reviews about the cheese here. I came by myself on a Friday night (friend didn't want to spend money on food, which is definitely his loss here!) and was so impressed! It's got such great ambiance, I loved the wine cellar vibe. No reservation but I walked right in, not sure if that was because it was just me but the restaurant seemed constantly full while I was there from 7-9pm. I think the owner was my waiter, he seemed very knowledgeable and proud of the food on his menu. Told me everything was good, of course, and that the menu rotated based on what was not only available, but tasty that week. "If I don't like it, I take it off the menu," he told me. That week tomatoes were ripe so there were a few dishes featuring tomatoes. I got one, the tomato gazpacho and I've never had such sweet tomatoes in my life! I was also going to go for the fondue but seeing as how there were so many interesting dishes on the menu, I went for something different: baked Camembert. It was literally a whole wheel of Camembert cheese that had been baked and topped with a nice sour cherry chutney, served with a mixed green salad. I instantly regretted eating as much bread as I did while waiting for the cheese to come out, since I couldn't finish off that much cheese by myself. It's a ton! The staff encouraged me to take my time and enjoy it, but I eventually had to give up. That said, they were kind enough to let me order a creme-brulee type dessert for take out (they don't usually do that, like most restaurants outside the US) because I really wanted to try one even though I didn't have room. As far as the wine, my waiter recommended everything based on my preferences as there is no wine menu. Again, he took pride in knowing exactly who/where the wine comes from and seemed to enjoy finding the exact right glass of wine for each person. This isn't the kind of place you come because there's one amazing dish on the menu everyone has to try. Keep in mind that as the menu changes so often, something that you see reviewed here may not actually be there if you decide to visit. But take comfort in knowing that what's "good" here is an owner who puts a lot of effort into crafting beautiful, tasty, seasonal dishes and curating superb wines. Be open to suggestion and enjoy the experience here. It's one you won't get many other places. Just be sure to come with an empty stomach!! Thank you Le Bistro du Fromager - can't wait to come back for another spectacular meal! read more

We headed South for the weekend and rolled into Old Town late Friday evening. I had saved a few places on Yelp beforehand for Friday but most of them didn't list the restaurant hours and many of the places did not have websites, so I prepared myself to have gelato or stale pizza as my Friday meal. Le Bistro du Fromager appeared to be just around the corner so we headed that way. When we arrived we could only see a few tables inside but the menu looked nice and the waiter seemed happy enough to serve us. He led us down the stairs into a wine cellar of sorts and voila - instant ambiance. Not too dimly lit and no dank cellar smell. After glancing at the menu we ordered some kind of Cote du Rhone, a mushroom and brie starter and then the croque monsieur and risotto as our mains. The wine came out quickly and the starter was not far behind. The mushrooms were kind of a pate sandwiched between the brie but it actually made the dish much easier to eat. Not an earth shattering starter but we enjoyed it. When our mains came out there was no flashy presentation - but they did not need it! The croque monsieur was perfectly toasted with yummy hints of butter (okay a lot of butter), gruyere, ham, etc. It came with a little side salad so I was able to sleep better knowing that my meal had a few nutrients...The parmesan risotto was also pretty straight forward but there must be some kind of hidden ingredient because it was delicious. Great textures and heavenly cheese. We were too full to consider dessert but I'm sure it would have been just as yummy as everything else. This place is a must try if you are spending a few days in Nice. read more

The Bistro specializes in cheese, and in France you must try some of the cheeses. We had the Fondue for two. Absolutely excellent! We couldn't finish all of the fondue, or the bread which came with it since so much was provided. The waiter (who spoke excellent English) offered a great recommendation for a wine pairing. The white wine was from a small vineyard with limited production and this recommendation paired perfectly with the Fondue. And it was a GREAT value. We then had the fresh Isola raspberries with meringue for dessert. Unbelievably good! We will be going back! read more

We came for dinner as a group of eight, all food and wine lovers and all travellers from all around the world. We all came out feeling like we just had one of the best dinning experience ever! We got greeted by really friendly staffs, walking us down to the cave. At the bottom of the stairs you just realise you've entered a really unusual restaurant. This amazing venue carved into the rock is mind blowing. You are seating next to racks of wine bottles, bags of flours used to make their insane homemade bread (best bread I had in France. I asked them to buy some they said they are not making enough to sell it but kindly offered me a baguette at the end of dinner!) and of course the key element : a huge selection of cheeses waiting for you. When we looked at the menu we were all cheerful it was 8 of us so we got to order every starters! Everything single one of them were perfect! It only let me post 3 pictures from the starters but trust me everything was succulent! The foie gras is the best I ever had, the perfect egg and salmon raw brilliant and the raviole to die for. To drink with we got the sommelier recommendations that we gave freedom to pick for us. He started explaining to us in the most helpful and informative way what wine they are working with and why, what wine would go well with the food and why and then he proceeded to offer suggestions with the descriptions and prices, starting from the most expensive to more affordable ones. We thought that was a great approach because you can still pick the one you want based on your budget without having to price it up in advance. As for the main dishes, we all wanted to try the fondue. A few of us worked in Courchevel and all agreed this was the best we ever had. We also tried the Mont D'Or and we were not disappointed. The quality of the cheese and charcuterie are second to none. We also wanted to try the free range chicken supreme that was cooked to perfection and combined perfectly with the purple potatoes mash and asparagus. We managed to save a bit of room for dessert and shared the best lemon tart we ever had and an insanely good chocolate eclair, all home made. Even the coffee is good! If you ever had a coffee in France you know why I'm raving about it! I think I can speak for all of us when I say this was our best dining experience in Nice and we would recommend it to any one leaving there if visiting the area. Those guys are pros, friendly and super knowledgeable. Thank you read more

This place was absolutely lovely! The sommelier was very knowledgeable and was able to help us pick out a great wine even though we spoke no French. The rest of the staff was smiling and very willing to help with any questions we had. We shared the fondue, a charcuterie board and a side of veggies amongst the four of us and it was more than enough! The fondue itself was phenomenal and I had a hard time stopping. The owner was there and checked on us to make sure everything was perfect and the chefs were nice enough to let my mother stand and watch them cook for a bit. All around, a great experience and I would recommend this place to everyone! read more

Delicious cheese based menu that changes daily. Very helpful waitstaff, very fresh food, house made bread that puts all others to shame because the owner bakes it at 6pm, so it is fresh out of the oven, not sitting since before lunch. Organic wine that the waitress suggested was a great pair with our meal. Very fun atmosphere in a wine cave under the city. read more

:-)) read more
