Dinner

Food was amazing but cash only. We had the fondue. Good amount of cheese and bread. We also had the charcuterie plate. Looks empty but there is a down stairs where everyone was seated

We LOVED our dining experience at La Cave du Fromager! The underground dining area was enchanting, the food delicious, and wine selection was extensive. I highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time as we were extremely lucky to have gotten a table as a walk-in. Lastly, this is a cash only establishment, so be sure to have cash on hand before dining!

Croquettes

Young people don't like grease. Eat greasy! - a sign at Cave du Fromager (rough translation) We couldn't leave France without trying fondue! And we're glad we did. Well ... not exactly fondue. Fondue is just the melted cheese. What we ordered was raclette, which is pretty much a charcuterie plate where you put the cheese slices on a stove, then eat it with cured meats, bread, potatoes, etc. We started off with an appetizer of croquettes filled with melted cheese and garnished with caramelized onions! If you know us, you know how much we love our caramelized onions - Jason especially! They were a bit on the filling side for an appetizer (especially with all the melted cheese), but nonetheless, we're glad we tried it! Like most greasy food, the first few bites were delicious! Mind blowing, even! The cheese flowed right from the stovetop to the meats, and we ate it when it was piping hot while blowing steam out of our mouths. There's a reason why the French are famous for cheese! I really wish I knew what type of cheese it was, but all I know is that it was the most ideal type for me - really not too strong (I don't like blue, goat, or sheep's cheese usually), and very very soft! However, like most greasy food, the pace of eating was really not sustainable. We got full real fast (hence the minus one star). It was a fantastic last meal in France, but I will warn that you will likely not be able to finish all of it unless you're really hungry! (in fact, the next table over, two people offered to give away the remainder of their meal - more than half! - because they were too full lol)

You'd never know this underground restaurant exists from the outside. Super cool cozy cave feel with walls lined with brick and wine. Like some of my other favorite restaurants we stumbled upon in nice there is no wine menu and you just tell the waiter what type of wine you want and they bring you a recommendation to try - it's great! The menu is very cheese heavy, with a few different forms of delicious cheeses. We got the baked Camembert which was similar to a baked Brie with potatoes to dip in and salad, as well as the tartiflette, which stole the show and was similar to a baked lasagna / scalloped potatoes with cream, cheese, and pork belly. Great service and a very fun vibe, would definitely recommend!

Food and service was excellent. The grotto provides a wonderful experience and ambiance to remember. Must try the pork belly clay pot.

Wonderful and fun! We shared fondue and couldn't finish it between the two of us. Had lovely red wine the owner makes (perfect line on market there!). BRING CASH!! They don't except cards. We took a chance not making a reservation and waited outside as soon as they opened all the non reservation people filled it up. Moral of the story: make a reservation. Worth the stop!

chicken Wellington with porcini mushrooms, truffle mash, beans from the countryside and jus, paired with a crisp white

Mmm, La Cave du Fromager was an absolutely delicious discovery nestled in the charm of Old Town. I had turned to Yelp for foodie recommendations knowing that I'd be heading to Nice for work and this was a 'must try.' I called after work one night hoping to secure a reservation for one and, I did! An hour later, I was seated and ready to enjoy my first glass of wine (btw, all glasses of wine are 7euros and paired nicely with your order). To start, I tried the caramelized foie gras from gers and sourdough brioche with Jame's chutney paired with a glass of Vinoceros Ombre du soir. The flavor paring was complex, interesting, unique and surprisingly delicious. I then opted for a main course of chicken Wellington with porcini mushrooms, truffle mash, beans from the countryside and jus, paired with a crisp white. Overall, the wine, the ambiance, the food was all delicious and delightful. I'm glad I dined here and discovered it on Yelp!

Fantastic! Tucked down one of the many interesting, maze-like alleyways in old town... dining here is a delight. The cave atmosphere is lovely, the service is super friendly, helpful and attentive and the food is nothing short of spectacular. I had the tartiflette and it was out of this world. Very rich but a reasonably sized portion. Incredible flavors. The home baked bread is also fantastic and my friend enjoyed the asparagus risotto as well. Our server was kind and funny and beyond helpful with her wine recommendation. She also pointed us in the direction of two other top notch dinner restaurants in the area which was much appreciated. I really can't say enough good things about our experience here. It was one of the most memorable meals of our trip to France. You really must make it a point to go, if you are in the area.

Awesome experience! Right in the middle of the old town and an awesome gem for food and wine lovers. More options than just that of course. The seating area is downstairs in a wine cellar, although it's more of a restaurant feel than a wine cellar feel. The service was amazing, best in all of France that we received for a non Michelin rated place. Our server told us about all the food and the sommellier gave us the exact wine we wanted. I asked for a red and funky and he brought us an Australian Cinsault! For food we ordered the cheese Fondant with vegetables, their sausage dish, their pork tartar, and their chicken. I highly recommend the chicken and the tartar. The fondant cheese was a little bit sour for our liking but they had other cheese options so maybe choose the three cheese bland instead. And there weren't too many vegetables with the cheese but their homemade sourdough bread made up for that. Honestly we cane because we read a review here that was one star rating and the guests judged it for their cheap tables, bad wine, and change in management. Well I thought that was a bad reason to give a bad review and I came here to give it a chance and Mathew and his crew gave me better than what I wanted and I left feeling like a made some new friends. Will recommend this place and will come back for sure.

Beef stew !!!!

Agree with one of the reviews... best meal I've had in France in 7 days!! Great atmosphere, the staff were great in explaining the food and very attentive. We had the charcuterie with meat and cheese, the beef stew and a few beers. Plenty of food for two. The beef just melted away and was wonderful!!

An amazing time eating the best fondue in town!

My boyfriend and I had a great time in the vintage cheese cave. We were greeted by a friendly and energetic French man and manager, Jean Michel and he found us a nice table in the corner of the wine cellar and served us the most amazing, "to die for" croquettes, charcuterie and fondue. At the end of dinner he gave us an herbal shot to help with digestion and we left with our bellies full. The staff is very hardworking and the food is excellent Mahalo from Hawaii, Jean Michel. I love the smoky quartz! Aloha

Caters to Americans, great bread, too pricey. Sort of gross feeling after so much cheese.

A French restaurant with a creative cheese theme? Yep, this is about as good as it gets. Also the organic wine was delightful.
