Very good "authentic" mexican food. A little heavy on the cilantro for me, but they do not have to put it on the food, if you request it. The combo fajita platter was unbelievably good. They make chorizo in house, that is in there, and the sausage flavoring permeates the dish, along with the shrimp, chicken, and beef. Yum. Another dish that is good is the camarones ala diabla. The plate is humongous. You can get it with the spicy whole beans, which I would recommend. Service is attentive but not overbearing. My wife and I love this place and its almost become a weekly affair for us. When we go outta town and have sub-par food, we can't wait to get home and come back to La Caretta. The food is great. The menu isn't necessarily the most amazing variety, because its very simple. I typically order 1 of 3 dishes on a pretty consistent basis and its always good! The dishes are great portions and they are usually accommodating to give you the lunch portion during dinner time. The staff is ALWAYS friendly and they always recognize us. Never had bad service, ever. The Espinaca Cheese dip is a must. Their chips are always fresh and never-ending. Probably the best Mexican food in the Kansas City area, for the price, you just can't beat it. Being that its so close to home, makes it even better. read more

The service was terrible. We waited an hour when there were tables that were available. I was sick for 3 days after eating the food. The manager was less than customer friendly. We will NEVER go back and we strongly encourage our friends to choose another restaurant. read more

I give it 3 stars because the food is always pretty darn good and comes out pretty quickly. And NORMALLY the service is great. But the last 2 times we have been here thee service has been very poor. We waited over 10 mins for someone to even come acknowledge we were there and take drink orders. Then they charged us for 2 alcoholic drinks we didn't even order. Really liked this place the first time I visited. Then I visited a second time. I begged to go here, promising my aunts would like it. Unfortunately, the service was so bad. Like really bad. Not a bad mexican restaurant. It is located in Gardner, KS and is a little hard to get to if you don't know where you are going. Prices are very reasonable and they do have a lot of selections. We went in with a group of 16 and were immediately sat down and the service was fantastic. The food seems very much on the "gringo" side of things meaning not a whole lot of spice or flavor, however, the chips and salsa was phenomenal and the best part is they had home made hot salsa. The mild was also home made and it did have a very nice flavor with some smoky chipotle flavor to it. Overall very good restaurant for a small city with not a lot of restaurant selections. read more

I really liked the lanterns and wanted to stuff them in my pockets to hang at my house, but alas, but I forgot to wear my clown pants. The service as super speedy and the chips and salsa they put down in front us as soon as we sat down were fresh and yummy. I love the cilantro and bits of green onion is the salsa. I could have just ate chips and salsa and been a happy camper. I did order steak fajitas and they were good. I personally like having other colored peppers in my fajitas, so they were a win. Told by a friend to check this place out while in town. Went in looked busy but had plenty of tables available. Ordered fajitas very tasty and big took some home for the next day. Have eaten here a number of times when visiting friends in Gardner, and this is their preferred locale (not that there are a whole lot of options in town). Service runs very good to maybe a bit slow but the food is always on point for good Tex-Mex fare. Healthy portions, reasonable price, nice presentation. Tried a new menu option tonight, 'New Enchiladas', grilled chicken enchiladas with an alfredo pepper sauce. The overall review may be a 4 but this one is a 5 for flavor. Definitely know what I'll be ordering next time (and will be a puerco ordering a 3rd enchilada a la carte). read more

Wanted to order a smaller size portion of steak fajita's and black beans for child but the waitress would only accomodate by ordering everything ala carte (which ended up costing more than full size menu item). Received incorrect and incomplete orders, ala carte was not what we ordered and one persons order was not put in at all. Couldn't get drink refills because waitress ignored us until time to pay. best Mexican food I have EVER had. all the restaurants in Kansas city do not even come close. I am a huge fan, it is a must stop for me once a week. their whole menu is excellent but I recommend enchiladas or tamales! can't go wrong. Ate here yesterday with my wife for her birthday. The food was good and hot which was a plus. My food arrived fairly quick, but my wives food didn't arrive until much later. The salsa was bland and not very tasty. I ordered chili rellenos they were plentiful and heat hot, but not spicy hot. The refried beans were of a different flavor. When my wife finally got her dish, it was hot and fresh. She had ordered a shrimp dish. The shrimp was cooked very good and the accompanying vegetables were plentiful. I had mentioned to the waiter it was her birthday and was met with a shrug. The overall experience was lukewarm at best. I've eaten much better and much worse. This place is a 50/50 on my list. We live West of Gardner an have always went to Olathe for dinner on weekends... La Carreta opened up a year ago or so, so we decided to try it since its close to home. Sooooo Happy we did!! This is actually in reflection to their newest location in Olathe. We come to the Gardner one a lot since we live here and love it. However, when we went to the Olathe location we all got sicker than dogs! Not sure what the heck happened. So, needless to say we won't be going back to that location. We really weren't impressed with it. The Gardner location is MUCH better. We know the people by name and I guess should have stuck with it. read more
