I was craving birria tacos, and La Carreta made me fall in love with them! I've never had birria tacos, but I have always wanted to try. La Carreta had three birria tacos with the broth on their menu for $18, which I thought was a great deal. I ordered to go, so I placed my order on the phone, since the online way wasn't working for some reason. I got the birria tacos with a small chips and queso. My order was waiting for me at the bar, so I didn't even have to wait. It was also packed tightly due to the broth being in there. The birria tacos were so good! I can't believe I have never had them before. Three was the perfect amount and there was so much broth, so I could dip my tacos in there multiple times. The chips also filled the bag and came with salsa. I wasn't a huge fan of the queso and salsa. To me, the salsa needed to be a bit spicy and the queso was too thick, but I didn't microwave it, which could have been why. The chips were delicious. The consistency in delicious fresh dishes that are perfectly prepared, wonderful margaritas and knowledgeable, friendly wait staff is incredible. I've been to La Carreta before but didn't remember it being anything other than just okay. I did a pick up order from here the other day and decided to come back to try it for myself. I was shocked. The chips and salsa are always my first view into the restaurant and they were FANTASTIC fresh salsa. 9/10 chips were crispy and just the right thickness. 8/10 the queso was super yummy and I didn't have any complaints but I've also had better queso. 6/10 The quesadilla was super addictive. My boyfriend almost stole his friends when he was in the bathroom. Fresh pico served on the side was fantastic. Our server was super nice and attentive. Overall this place left me surprised and pleasantly so. I love having so many good options in Baton Rouge when it comes to Mexican food. And this is definitely a good option! Great even! The steak I received was lackluster, no flavor, just grease. My husband's shrimp also lacked flavor, as if the seasoning had been added after the prep. If you're looking for a Mexican restaurant that has something for everyone, La Carreta is the place for you! The food is good and the prices are reasonable. They have a daily happy hour, which is great, but know that for the discounted margs, it only applies to their house margs and not the hand-crafted ones (which come in a wide variety of delicious flavor combos - don't miss out on the pineapple cilantro!). The place itself is large with an outdoor patio (although I was there with the hubby while it was raining, so we didn't check it out). Service was quick, but our particular waitress was not super attentive (we waited a while for her to clear dishes and receive the bill while the place was not busy at all) and while I appreciated and enjoyed the large margarita I ordered, she had not asked what size I wanted, nor did she tell us about the happy hour menu limitations (it's listed on the bar menu, but not clear that not all margaritas are included - glad I know for next time. Perhaps she assumed we knew, but I've grown somewhat accustomed to people asking if was our first time dining (but perhaps I'm picky). I had the chicken chimichanga, which I normally save half of anytime I order it out, but I was so hungry and it was so delicious I completed housed it! It comes with a small salad, rice, and beans - all of which I also ate. The beef fajita nachos (one can get also have it with ground beef or chicken) was devoid of meat. Tiny little pieces of fajita meat were sprinkled about. Do not get the Chile relleno. We picked up and ordered the carnita Asada for my husband and I to split and a kids quesadilla. First of all, the salsa was essentially spaghetti sauce. Very strange. Hated it, and I'm not hard to please when it comes to salsa. Chips were okay. The kids quesadilla cheese was still cold in the middle. My child didn't touch it. Said it was gross. But the star of the show was the sorry excuse for carna asada. The meat was like shoe leather. Tough, weird texture, unseasoned. It was topped with a weird slab of cheese that never melted. We didn't eat any of it after the first bite. We will never return here. Very disappointed. Thankfully we had a gift card so we weren't out too much money from it. read more

I settled on the quesa-Birria and Al carbon tacos... The quesa-Birria tacos looked great but there's really not any flavor and the meat isn't very tender at all. The soup is just... ehh. My friend and I headed out with her three small girls for dinner on a Friday, and the girls requested "Chips and Salsa" with vigor! It was a beautiful Friday afternoon, so we knew it may be a little hard to find some openings. We headed to an overhyped and overrated restaurant not far from La Carreta, and it was a 1.5 hour wait for anything - inside, outside....No go. We headed to LaCarreta, and I expected the same result, but we were pleased to see the patio was really busy, but there were plenty of available seats inside. We were tucked into a little nook, perfect for keeping the girls at bay. We were quickly tended to by our server, provided crayons and kids menus, and never felt like we were waiting. We were given plenty of chips and salsa to start. All the drinks came out quickly, and we put our order in. Again, we were tended to and made sure we had everything we needed. The food arrived quickly. I ordered two tacos with the side of beans and a cup of tortilla soup. I didn't remember their soup being so tasty. Each taco was delicious as well. They're more like street tacos, so they have a lot of fun flavor combinations packed into the soft taco. I didn't see a corn taco option, so flour it was (I try to avoid flour, but these were worth the risk). Our bill arrived and we were able to quickly take care of it and be on our way. Very affordable experience for two adults and three little ones. Just a warning for those who are more Covid wary - the staff near us was not masked. Also, the waitress was way too close for comfort. The staff was unmasked and the waitress consistently got way too "up close and personal". Good salsa with a little heat and good cilantro flavor. I like it a little chunkier, but it has good flavor. Service was a little on the slow side. (Okay - it got worse the longer we stayed.) Never received the order of tortillas we asked for - and not because they were crazy busy - it was a slow Sunday afternoon. But the tortillas were on our ticket. Poverty portions... why am I paying 20 dollars for eight pieces of chicken and three bites of rice and beans?

I was ignored by three different employees for about five minutes as o waited to pick up carry out. When I did get waited on the waitress set my order on the bar, along with the check and walked away. I gave her the $40 in cash for an $18.56 tab, which she passed to someone and she walked away again. Five more minutes later she gives me $19, two fives and 9 ones but not the .44 cents in change. La Carreta has some pretty good Mexican food! They have all your typical menu items. The chicken fajitas are very good and are big enough to split between two people, especially if you fill up on some chips and salsa. The salsa is good, not too spicy, but a heavy tomato flavor. Another nice option if you are trying to save money, is to get a "side" dish, which is basically an a-la-carte dish. Overall, this is a solid Mexican place. I'm sure we'll be back. read more

Two words... TACO TUESDAY!! On Tuesdays all tacos on the menu are $2 a piece including the seafood tacos. We started with the queso dip which was your run of the mill queso. I ended up ordering three different tacos: pork belly, al pastor, and the shrimp. The pork belly had a nice kick to it. Al pastor is always my favorite because of the combination of the salty Porto and the sweet pineapple. The shrimp taco was the only one that was a little bit of a let down. The sauce had a strange flavor that I didn't care for as much as the others. The staff here was great as well! I order Togo tonight and very specifically order 2 salsas and a queso. I walk up to the hostess stand and she says it's at the bar. I was instructed to the bar, I notice when I get in my car I only have one bag of chips. (One bag of ships for 2 cups of salsa and one queso) Who gives only one bag of chips for a queso, and two salsas that I paid $30+ dollars for. When I go back in I walk up to the hostess and ask her, " if she can get me two more bags of chips for my order," she takes her mask off smiles Flashes her eyelashes and says you can go to the bar sir.
