I appreciate integrity. I was looking at my receipt from a recent dinner and noticed my math was incorrect. What should have been a one in the hundreds place I erroneously made a 2, essentially paying an extra $100 after the tip. My parents used to take us here as kids and it was bustling and cozy authentic food. Watching the tortilla lady make them by hand in the dining area was the highlight! Took my daughter there recently for the same experience but the tortilla lady was in an awkward area, not very approachable. Center stage was a bussing cart that seemed to be set up there permanently. Seems like the waiters claimed the dining area for their own convenience. There was literally a bus station set up in the center of the dining area. Obviously absentee owner. Glad its still open but definitely not the same ambience at least where we sat. I am not a Venice local, but if I was, I get the feeling I would eat here. I also get the feeling this place has not changed much since it's opening in 1963. When I was a child (in mid 90's, San Luis Obispo), there were few things my mother loved more in the world than a perfectly-mixed Margarita. Many a Friday night, she would drag us to a local establishment called Pepe's for the best Margarita's in town. If the Margarita was too salty, too strong or too sweet, she would send it back. I always cringed at the exchange (sympathizing with the waiter, who always politely took the drink back) but since learned that you can't blame a woman for knowing what she wants, and wanting it done right. La Cabana seems to do things right. Upon entering the classic casita-style abode, I'm transformed into a child visiting the Mexican restaurant of my youth (since closed). The menu is simple yet daunting: what is Chile Relleno again? Can I finish the whole combo plate? I opt for the two tacos combo, one hard shell with ground beef, one fish. I'm a sucker for variety; I'm also a sucker for a perfectly roasted, salted chip paired with a tomato-based salsa with those little floating white onions. I recently went here on a date, and my date complimented me on my choice of restaurant. I don't know if she was just being nice, if we were soul-mates, or if the greasy food just happened to hit right - but regardless I'll be coming back. read more

La cabana is a little mexican restaurant that is hidden in venice ca. If you pass by here in your car you would probably miss the spot. But this is one of those places you wanna go try out if your in the area. Today i tried el plato de barbacoa and it was very good. There was a good taste in the meat that I really enjoyed and the quality of the eat was on point. When I was biting into the meat it was super soft and the juice just flowed well when you bit into the meat. The tierra and mar plate is also really good the carne asada was also cooked to perfection and i liked that the meat was so soft that when you bit into the carne asada you werent wrestling with it to eat it. Over all really liked this place and I would definetely go back to it in the future. I've been coming to this place for over 40 years. It's very consistent. The salsa is awesome and they even have a mild one for little kiddies. There is a woman who hand-makes tortillas by the fire oven. You should tip her because she's amazing. A secret menu item is the shredded beef hard shell taco a La carte. So great. Also amazing are the fajitas and the table made guacamole. The staff has service dialed in. They either anticipate your needs or are immediately accessible. Prices have been going up steadily over 4 decades. Still reasonable though. The only thing I don't like is there is only 1 bathroom per gender. If there are two I don't know where the other one is. Sometimes there is a line to go. The garden area is a real treat but I always prefer sitting in the booth by the fire. Lastly, parking sucks. You're not supposed to park across the street in the lot but people do. Valet park if you can. Venice has a serious car-break-in problem as of late. read more

Just got done eating dinner here. I chose it based on the menu and the proximity to our hotel. So glad we tried it out! The service was spectacular! Everyone was super friendly and we didn't have to ask or wait for anything. There was always someone there checking on us or bringing us beverage refills. The place itself is cute. I love restaurants that are in old houses. I have to say it is a little loud. Not the best for conversation. The table side guac was soooo good! I had the 3 taco combo with beef. I thought the beef needed more flavor. It was kinda dry too. the refried beans and rice were also just ok. The hubby got a chicken quesadilla with rice and pinto beans and soup. His meal was so good! I wish I had gotten that. The chicken tortilla soup was really good. Definitely homemade. I could have actually just eaten a bowl of that and been happy. The prices were fair. I do feel like years ago it was better, because not only were the prices more fair, they used to always have handmade tortillas. I think now with covid, they don't have a full time worker for that. She has actually moved back home to look after her parents...yada yada yada. I drove the U Haul down here and this is my thank you dinner. Sooooo Once we parked over at Whole Foods we noticed that valet is available (friday & saturday). next time. Remember this is an old place and the interior is very '70's it dark inside, lots of old wood, and plenty of booths to get cozy in. Service was/is top notch, fast too....menu is a bit abbreviated but ask for what you don't see they are accommodating. That's it...good, prepared the old school way, and plenty on the plate. We ate here with 8 friends. La Cabana puts out average and ordinary Mexican food. I had the chicken quesadilla. The ingredients we're fine but the tortilla seemed like it was either not fresh or over cooked as it was stiff. The guacamole made at the table is ok but at $14 a bowl it's definitely on the pricy side. My friend had the shrimp enchiladas and was not pleased, especially due to the fact that the shrimp were quite small. If La Cabana stepped up to the plate and put out a great experience and excellent food they would be a lot busier. Less than half of the tables were filled and the patio area was empty on the night I was here. Don't be cheap with the ingredients as it is noticed by your customers. Stopped in with my mom and grandma to eat our last LA dinner before going back to CT. Really, really excellent service. The waiter and front of house were friendly, attentive, and quick. The tableside guacamole was uncommonly tasty--for a dip that is very simple to make and serve, so many get it wrong. No such concerns here! My eyes were unfortunately larger than my stomach, but that might be a good thing. Servings were HUGE. The tacos I had were full to bursting with the proteins I selected (barbacoa, chicken, carne asada). You're not leaving hungry, that's for sure. In terms of drinks, I can't speak to the cocktails. The Jamaica my mom ordered was lightly sweet and highly refreshing. I'm kicking myself for not having ordered a horchata, but if it's anything like the Jamaica, it'll be good. The only ding I can give is for parking accessibility, which is not at all a criticism of the restaurant, but important to know since parking in Venice can be dicey. I put in an order for delivery for the first time a few nights ago...I have to admit I selected this restaurant because a) I really wanted tacos, and b) I really wanted a margarita. I was having a quiet Mom's party of 1 that night while my son and husband were at a movie. I know most Mexican restaurants offer an option for flavored margaritas, so I just nicely asked in the note when I ordered the margarita if they could make it a strawberry one, and if not, definitely no biggie. I also ordered the 2 taco combination. A few minutes later, I got a call from someone at the restaurant saying they were now adding the option for a strawberry upgrade due to my request, hahaha! And they graciously accommodated it as well. It was delicious and it was the perfect accompaniment to enjoy my nice, quiet night at home, and the tacos were great and the portions were huge - the tacos came with a large container of beans and rice, with a pretty decent sized bag of chips and salsa! I would definitely say this restaurant has exemplary service. And low and behold, when I went to give my review on their website (got an automated email asking for a review), I saw "Jennifer's Upgrade" under the "double margarita to go" selection. The zucchini and corn quesadilla was fabulous. Honestly, I think any of their quesadillas would be great. The guacamole, which was prepared at our table, was delicious as well. The tortillas we had were made to order on a grill just a few feet away. Our server was extremely personable and had a contagious positive attitude. I haven't tried this place in years. I live a block away from it and pass by it at least twice a day. I was feeling a lil under the weather, so I was craving a albondiga soup. I ordered a large 16oz to go as I was just going to have the soup. I also ordered some hard tacos with R&B as well for my son. When I got home I was saddened to find a small 8oz with only 2 albondigas in the whole soup. The beans were salty enough for me to pass on. Bless this restaurant. I had a reservation for Cinco de Mayo since they had some drink and food specials. It was packed. Some customers were drunk and being rude to staff, but this wait staff handled it like champs. I hope everyone tipped as well as we did because they deserved it man. I have been coming here for the past 25+ years with family and for special occasions. Never really had any complaints about their food or their service. From the time you sit down to the time you pay is usually around 50-60 minutes. Which is fairly great for here. Anyways. I went in last Thursday to enjoy another dinner there. Got in and there was a few groups of people in front of us waiting. No big deal. At least 5-10 minutes passed before someone came to the front and addressed everyone. In the meantime others were starting to pile in and waiting. Looked in the restaurant and at least 30% of the tables were vacant with food and trash still on them (which is not like them). Finally got seated and they claim that they are busy (maybe 30+ minutes ago). Usually they bring out some waters, chips, and dip as soon as you sit down. But it took 10+ minutes to bring it over. And took another while before they took our order. In the meantime, 2 other tables who sat down about 5-15 minutes after us got the chips, drinks, and food. When questioned about this, their excuse was that they are busy and those other tables ordered less than you. Finally got to place the order after 30+ minutes of waiting. After we ordered (which we were very hungry) we thought maybe it would come out in about 10-15 minutes (which is standard for them). After waiting another 25+ minutes after we placed our order we were thinking of just leaving and going elsewhere because it was getting late and had been there for over an hour with no food. As soon as we were getting up to leave the guy comes over and says that it's ready. Fine, whatever. My food was warm but not the typical hot that it comes out like. The other meal was cold and missing an item. When brought up about both things they brought out the side only. When mentioning about heating it up a few times they just ignore it. Eventually I finished my meal and the other meal had to be taken home (which was thrown away). They ended up starving with no solutions or anything else. After 2 hours of dealing with this experience we were finally able to leave. It was a very disappointing experience from a great restaurant. We held a graduation celebration on the back patio. Vicky made it easy to book our large group and they offered several different options including pre-fixe or ordering off the menu. We ordered off the menu and split our payment which was easy. The graduation ceremony ran long and they were flexible and accommodated us. The service was friendly and efficient. The chips were warm and fresh with choices of salsa. Everyone seemed to enjoy their margaritas and food. Mexican enchiladas are supposed to be made with fresh red sauce. [Fresh meaning putting in dried chiles with broth and spices in a blender and straining it] and not from a can. They are supposed to be topped with cotija or queso fresco and not yellow cheddar cheese. Also carne Asada taco is supposed to be with sirloin streak and not chuck roast. I could taste the difference. Street tacos at any roadside stand are probably better. The only good things were the chips and salsa and the service.
