Me and my family specifically come to this restaurant when the weather gets nice. Me and my mom went today sat for 40 min. The first server was rude I had to ask her name which was Jennifer. My mom ordered her food I wasn't ready to order she was supposed to comeback . Two other families came in another gentleman came to take my order before tending to these two families. One family was a group of 6 the other was a group of four . They brung a table of 6 their food before me and my mom . As well as the table of four . I paid for me and my mom's drink and ask to pay the bill the waitress was upset. I told her we had been waiting before any of these people even got seated . I loved it will never be back . What a huge bummer. The reason I give this review is to the lack of attention and BAD ATTITUDE by the male server. Awful. This was our first time here. Our server (a man with a ponytail and don't recall his name) was greeting customers at the door and immediately he had a bad attitude asking "what the heck is he doing ?" As he seemed upset that my husband was holding the door for some elderly patrons. He continued this bad attitude at the table . As you can see by my profile we eat out quite a bit and have no problem spending money on food and drink especially if it's a good experience. Mexican cuisine is our favorite. This time we wanted to try a new place, we did not stay for another cocktail or dessert, we decided to leave. Not ONCE did this server come back and check on us. If he did, he would realize that the things we ordered were incorrect, so the opportunity for correcting the situation never presented itself. Granted, I USED to be a server for over 25 years as well as a former restaurant manager, we had no idea that it was a 2$ taco night and sometimes they may not do substitutions because of this, however, We did not even order that. Upon ordering, I asked the server if I could have the flautas made with flour tortillas, as I do love how the flour tortillas taste when fried. he immediately said no and gave me a story that flautas cannot be made that way because they will break. What a flat out lie. Chimichangas are made with flour. And every other Mexican restaurant from here to Mexico that we have been to has had no problem doing this for me. Anyways, I didn't care too much, and I had a back up plan. Also, my husband asked also if we can just have a shot of regular run of the mill, lower shelf tequila along with our margaritas we were charged nine dollars a piece after he assured us this was the cheapest. He then told us they were all the same price. He never Came back to our table afterwards ( and we are fun and easy going people ). He didn't offer us water, or anything, and also this person was standing at the front door on his phone, and then standing over by the kitchen, juggling towels like a game, and was in no way busy the entire time. Ambiance: clean cafe that can seat about 130 customers. Mexican music playing through their speaker system. Chairs and tables in good condition. Overall, it's what you would expect from a Mexican cafe style restaurant. Chips and salsa are provided to their customers. They were tasty. Salsa not too spicy which my wife enjoyed. Service: we were greeted promptly when we arrived and seated immediately. The server was there within a minute to get our drink order. He a lot of some time to review the menu and then came by to get our order. Unfortunately, my wife's order wasn't quite right, but he made sure to take care of it right away with no questions. Food: you get a lot of food for your money. The not so good news is that it doesn't taste like they season their meat. I had their shredded beef, chicken and ground beef. None of them tasted like they were seasoned at all. I took each one out of their tortilla to taste individually but they were all bland. How does a Mexican restaurant have bland meat? Everything else was just fine except for the lack of spiced meat. I may be spoiled being from Southern California where we have what I think might be the best Mexican food around. read more

The food was exceptional. I had the 3 steak tacos with rice and refried beans. The amount of steak on the tacos was a pleasant surprise, cooked to perfection. There was a generous amount of lettuce, tomatoes and cheese for each taco. So good. The rice was perfect with not too much tomatoes sauce, but the refried beans were exceptional. Our first visit to La Cabaña was for dinner tonight; we were pleasantly surprised by the size of the portions, the freshness of the ingredients, and the excellent balance of flavors. The house lime Margarita was one of the best I've ever tasted: perfectly sweet-tart, with generous pours of tequila, fresh lime, and fresh orange juice. The small guacamole appetizer was more than enough for two people, and was delicious. The carnitas tacos were stuffed with rich, succulent, porky goodness. The carne asada tacos were made with well-seasoned beefsteak that, though very flavorful, would have benefited from a bit more char on the edges (in my opinion). Next time, I will order mine with "extra char." The rice, refried beans, and toppings were all excellent. We will definitely go back to La Cabaña for great Mexican food and delicious, well-made Margaritas. Highly recommended. read more

All day today, I thought about the Nachos La Cabana. My mom and I went to La Cabana for dinner tonight and I ordered the Nachos La Cabana and my mom ordered a beef burrito. 35 minutes later the waitress brought me some other dinner - not Nachos La Cabana - and she brought my mom an enchilada. I told her the order was wrong and she stood at the table and ARGUED WITH ME and then just walked away. She was rude and indignant. I asked someone else for the manager, but he was in the kitchen. I was never able to speak to him. I left without eating dinner. Burrito and enchilada don't even sound similar. Does she really think this is the best way to promote repeat business? I would think they would want return customers, especially with the current pandemic putting many restaurants under. She was a horrible waitress. So disappointing. read more

La Cabana has hands down the best carnitas I've ever had!!! You would think that carnitas are just a simple simmered/braised piece of pork that really can't be messed up. But La Cabana does something different, something extra- they have too because it's not just regular ol carnitas. Unfortunately, I'm rating it on carnitas because I can't get away from them. I have my go to Mexican restaurants for certain dishes and this one has never been on my radar. You would never know how big this place is from the outside, it's bright, beautifully decorated, tv's everywhere-good for sports, the drinks are aweand the service is good. EDIT: Seven months later, and he hasn't gotten any better. My friend and I have been sitting here with empty glasses for at LEAST 20 minutes, and he's currently 10 feet away from our table (meaning he can SEE us) wrapping silverware...see the attached picture. When this restaurant first opened in Portage, I was so excited! I was used to traveling all the way to Valparaiso, and was happy to have one closer to home. At first, the service was top-notch, but that has recently changed. I'm not sure if there is new management, or even a new owner, but the service is rapidly declining. I visited a couple of weeks ago, and there was a very large party already there. As a result, I expected a longer than usual wait. What I didn't expect, however, was to have to wait more than 10 minutes for my server (Jerry) to even acknowledge me, even though he'd just left the table directly next to me. He finally came and took my order, after another server came and took my drink order for him. After that, I only saw him in passing. He never came back to check and see if I was okay, if I needed a refill, or if I wanted to order anything else. The straw that broke the camel's back was when I saw him LEAVE the restaurant! He literally went and got into a vehicle and drove off!! I was floored!! When I spoke with the cashier, she was extremely apologetic, but that doesn't take away the fact that my server left me unattended for pretty much the entire time I was in the restaurant. Someone needs to speak to Jerry to help him to understand that good service is a must, particularly when there are at least three restaurants within a two minute drive of La Cabaña. If the service doesn't get any better, I will not be returning. read more

What a great experience having dinner at TJ Pool Hall...Ha. inside joke! But seriously I was like WOW!! Its super nice inside. Very clean, bright lights and staff members were very professional. We ordered a variety of items. But the guac came out 1st and it was delish! Even more their salsa was perfectly made, onions, cilantro, and a lovely level of taste. Have eaten here a few times with no issues. This last time I ate here I felt it had to be mentioned. We walk in no problem get seated promptly server tends to us right away gets us our waters, we get our chips and salsa no issues, server takes our order and we we get our food no problem, but after that it was all down hill. Our water glasses were never refilled once we had to get another servers attention to fill our waters and get us limes and clear our table of our plates. We never received our check so we just went up to counter to pay and complain about service and only thing manager said after we complained was I'll talk to him, no I'm sorry no anything.
