Fantastic meal! My…read moreChez Boulay experience was one of the highlights of my visit to Quebec. Quite frankly I had many excellent meals in Quebec but this was one I'll remember for a while. The "36 Hour Beef Cheeks" w/miso celeriac purée and roasted celeriac did not disappoint. The beef cheeks were incredibly tender, fork tender to be exact, beefy flavorful and filling. The miso celeriac pure was very rich dressed up with the au jus. The flat iron steak with the roasted beets, fries and veal au jus might have been better in my opinion. The flat iron was a perfect medium rare and super tender. The Salmon Carpaccio was a great starter too. I also needed refills of the sough dough bread, it was easily addictive. All the dishes did not lack in letting the key ingredient taking a lead role. The staff was outstanding. I arrived slightly early and was happily greeted and seated quickly. Service during my meal was extremely professional. The restaurant was spotless and modern. I'd come back for sure.

We didn't have a reservation, but were fortunate enough to find seats at the bar--and honestly, it was perfect. For me, it was even preferable to the dining room, allowing us to watch the team at work while enjoying the warm and inviting atmosphere. We began with the Duck Foie Gras Terrine with pine forest spikenard, brioche tartine with larch and buckwheat praline, and a garnish of apples and aronia. We also added the sautéed foie gras, which elevated an already exceptional appetizer into something truly memorable. For our main courses, I chose the Québec Braised Beef Cheek with miso celeriac purée, roasted celeriac, wintergreen herb relish, and wild caraway veal jus. The beef was meltingly tender and deeply flavorful. My dining partner selected the Elzéar Venison Pâté en Croûte with balm poplar, Isle-aux-Grues plum mustard, hawthorn relish, and pimpina gel. Beautifully executed and rich with distinctly boreal flavors, it was both refined and comforting. We also shared a side of the duck breast lacquered with cranberries and schisandra, served with polenta flavored with dune pepper and braised winter lettuce. The standout for my dining partner was the polenta, formed into a crisp log with a beautifully crunchy exterior and soft center. He declared it his favorite preparation of polenta ever. From the attentive service to the inviting ambiance, everything was outstanding. Located in the heart of Old Québec on Rue Saint-Jean, Chez Boulay provided a delicious and memorable welcome to our holiday week. It was the perfect introduction to the cuisine, ingredients, and hospitality of Québec. Great food, great service, great atmosphere--simply perfection. Highly recommended. We would happily return on our next visit to Québec City.

With the dynamic trio of Philippe Racine, Philippe Fournier, and Andréa Beauseigle at the helm, this newly minted bistro is not just a meal; it's an experience that speaks to the heart of local gastronomy. As we stepped into the inviting atmosphere of Bistro St. Malo, we were immediately struck by the relaxed ambience that feels both chic and comforting. The decor is a perfect marriage of rustic elegance and modern flair, setting the stage for an unforgettable evening. The menu, crafted with both passion and precision, beckoned us to explore a variety of tempting dishes. We kicked off our culinary journey with the Mussels Marinière, bathed in a heavenly concoction of wine and garlic. Each bite was a succulent reminder of the sea, perfectly paired with crusty bread that could easily become a new best friend. Next on the list was the Soupe à l'Oignon, a classic French onion soup that was nothing short of a warm hug in a bowl. The rich broth, adorned with a gooey layer of melted cheese, transported us straight to a cozy Parisian bistro. Now, if you think escargots are just a fancy way to say "snails," think again. The Escargots Gratinés at Bistro St. Malo are a revelation, baked to perfection with a garlicky herb butter that made us rethink our long-held beliefs about these little treasures. For the main event, we indulged in the Joue de Bœuf sauce Robert, a sous-vide masterpiece that had been lovingly cooked for 30 hours. The beef cheek was so tender it practically melted on the fork, paired with a creamy potato purée and vegetables roasted in duck fat--a dish that could make even the most steadfast vegetarian reconsider their choices. We couldn't resist diving into the Ragoût de la Mer, a seafood stew that was a celebration of the ocean's bounty. With scallops, shrimp, lobster, cod, tuna, and salmon mingling in a rich bisque, this dish was a symphony of flavors that sang the praises of the fresh local products so central to the bistro's philosophy. Bistro St. Malo is more than just a meal; it's a culinary journey that pays homage to both French tradition and the vibrant tastes of the Mediterranean. If you find yourself wandering the charming streets of Quebec City, do yourself a favor and make your way to 75 St-Paul Street. You might just discover your new favorite dining spot.

They were right next to the large pick-up window looking into the kitchen, and our host then said "These are the people who will be preparing your dinner", and introduced us to each person in the kitchen... by name. This is a very small place, cozy and atmospheric. If there are just two of you, sitting at the bar is the way to go. It's where you really feel the vibe and see what makes this place so special. The food is off the hook, and changes so frequently that it's pointless for me to highlight specific dishes. We had an amazing charred broccolli, a seasonal morel dish, razor clams, and unique egg mayo concoction. Doesn't matter. the food will be exceptional whatever they are serving. Thier Michelin Bib Gourmand (exceptional food at reasonable prices) designation is well deserved. But if the soul of Buvette Scott is the food, the heart is Marine, who appeared to be the only server on duty while we were there. She is a transplanted Brit (I believe), with a quick smile and a sassy outlook. Even as busy as she was, she had the time to engage us and make us feel like we were old friends. Stories were told, laughing was had. We were the last two left from the first dinner seating that day, and Marine and part of the kitchen team sat at the bar with us as we finished and shared insights about Quebec City and how they ended up there. Rarely have I felt so comfortable and at home in a place I have never been before. Really good restaurants serve up really good food... Both of us opted for the table d'hôte menu, which included an appetizer, main course, dessert, and tea or coffee. We happily paid the small supplement to begin with the Duck Foie Gras served with strawberry-rhubarb jam and brioche--a decision we did not regret for a second. The foie gras was rich and silky, while the sweet-tart jam provided a beautiful contrast. For our entrées, I chose the Pulled Rabbit Poutine with devil's sauce. Comfort food elevated to another level, it was hearty, flavorful, and utterly satisfying. My dining partner selected the Cassoulet with duck sausage and duck leg confit. While the duck was excellent, it was the beans that stole the show--perfectly cooked, deeply flavored, and exactly what a great cassoulet should be. We finished with desserts: a traditional Far Breton for me and a beautifully executed Crème Brûlée for my dining partner. Both were wonderful endings to an already excellent meal. The service was warm and attentive, the ambiance charming and inviting, and the food delicious from beginning to end. Located in the heart of Old Québec, Lapin Sauté is exactly the kind of restaurant travelers hope to discover--authentic, welcoming, and serving food that leaves a lasting impression. Highly recommended, and we would gladly return on our next visit to Québec City.
