I came here for my birthday. All the food (all 13 of us) we got was absolutely amazing. We got our food in about 10-15 minutes, the music/singer they had singing when we came was also amazing and perfect for dinner. We were able to sing along but also enjoy our dinner. Had a taste for Italian food and I thought this place would do. Unfortunately, I was wrong! I ordered the garlic knots and omg was I disappointed!!! I got 3 uncooked pillsbury croissants with zero garlic for a hefty $8 dollars. Also, the two pasta dishes were dry and cold. The only thing I enjoyed were the meatballs and although they were way smaller than when they first open the restaurant, they were still tasty. Incredibly light Italian cuisine. I've had a taste of the thin crust pizza and the small plate Brussel sprouts. As my main dish, i had the special angel hair pasta with shrimp and scallops, and topped with capers. Also, everyone else from my table had only praise to say about their food. Pretty disappointed with this location...I have been to the Oak Brook location a few times and all were great experiences. We ordered take out and picked it up. First mistake was mine...I ordered but my husband picked up. When my husband came back with the food we were missing 2 entrees and the ones we got were seemingly smaller portions than I had remembered. I called back to explain that 2 of the 6 people did not get their meals. I was placed on a LONG hold (I have worked in hospitality for 20+ years so I get they were busy). When the manager finally came to the phone I was told I was LYING and I just wanted free food. He must have come to his senses somewhat since he said he we REMAKE them. So since we had guests over I sent my husband back (because they refused to deliver) when he got there the food was shoved in his face. No sorry, no I'll take that off your bill, no I threw in a dessert for your trouble... Yes we are at the tail end of a global pandemic and we have all suffered, and maybe they are experiencing being short staffed like many restaurants in the area. But there is no excuse to treat anyone this way. It costs everyone nothing to be kind, please do better. read more

I was so disappointed with my order this week. I ordered out (still trying to support during Covid), and my $22 chicken meal was the size of a child's meal. It was good but not fabulous. With tax and delivery my meal (the size of my hand) cost almost $30. Some bread and butter would have helped. Insane. Maybe I will just stick with the hit or miss pizza. This establishment's only redeeming qualities were the calamari and the bus boys. The service was absolutely awful. We were there on a Friday night, expecting to have a nice meal with family. Instead, we were met with awful service in a restaurant that was not busy. We waited for 10 minutes for our waitress, she never brought my father the pepper he asked for (the bus boys did), I got the wrong meal, she never asked how our food was, never refilled our drinks.. shall I go on? This was my first visit-- and I was excited, so it's unfortunate that I feel this compelled by the lack of service, that I am writing this review. I come from a family that has a history of hospitality, so maybe my expectations are high-- but one reason you go back to an establishment is partly because of their service. I was super disappointed with this place. My friend suggested it and I was super excited. The location is awesome and the outdoor seating is great. And that's about it. We ordered the margaritas on the menu and boy were they sour. Very bizarre. Not sure if they left out the agave or the grand mariner but neither of us could drink it. It took our server a long time to come back and we ordered wine, which was fine. We had the brushetta app which was okay and very small. I asked for dinner suggestions, thought maybe I'll get a burger, but my friend pointed out, that they had fresh pastas. I was wavering between the cacio e pepe and bolognese. I asked the server and she suggested bolognese. As a former server myself, I trust their suggestions. It was utterly bad. The pasta didn't taste fresh and the bolognese had absolutely no flavor, whatsoever. I even had to put 2 salt pack and 1 pepper pack and still couldn't eat it. The bolognese I make at home was 100x better. I took over half of it home and my husband was also disappointed. My girlfriend had the cavatelli which she also didn't care for. Very good food but the customer service is terrible! The bartenders have attitude problems and act like you don't even exist. They won't pay any attention to you unless you literally flag them down each time you want something. They don't smile and don't even ask if you want anything else. My personal favorite is the manager who is the biggest jerk you will ever meet, which must explain why the employees have attitudes, as attitude reflects leadership. After being a regular for a few a few months, I will never go back! I would rather stay home and eat a Swanson tv dinner than be treated so poorly. read more

Been driving by this place since it opened so I was curious to check it out! Finally got a chance to try it out; it's sleek, modern yet has charm. Like what they did with the artwork. We weren't too hungry so decided on two appetizers, a main dish to split and a bottle of wine! Had the goat cheese and bread and fried calamari . That cheese was delicious; the tomato sauce that came with it added another element to the dish! We had to ask for extra bread since we finished the one that cam with it! The calamari was on point! Cooked just right, breading not too heavy, sauce was spot on! We had a pasta with some Italian sausage, cut into smaller pieces, had basil cherry tomatoes and seasoning. I have to say that the sauce was not heavy, and actually made the dish more enjoyable! All in all, it was a great experience, service was good and the ambiance was a family one. Came here with my parents and husband for dinner and we were blown away by the flavors, service and decor! I had mixed expectations due to the varied reviews on here but I am so happy we gave them a shot! We started with the asparagus and an order of meatballs, both delicious! We also shared a few entrees; - Chicken Parmesan was perfectly breaded and juicy, only complain is that it needed a little more marinara. -Braciole, seriously just order this! the short rib was so tender and full of flavor, paired with the pappardelle and touch of Parmesan -Salciccia pizza, perfectly thin crunchy crust and surprisingly spicy! I've waited to write my review of La Barra for a while since I wanted to give them the opportunity to iron out any kinks after just opening. As a resident of Riverside, I reeeeeally would like this business to succeed. However, my experiences so far have indicated this location is not well-organized--it's certainly not the well-oiled machine of the Oak Brook location (at least not yet). My issues have all been with service and their level of organization--not so much any complaints about the food. Experience 1: About a week after opening, they advertised being open for carryout. When I went to the store to place an order, they seemed confused, frazzled, and were unfriendly when explaining they most certainly were NOT open for carryout. While this first experience was negative, I chalked it up to the business opening before they were really ready. Experience 2: We ordered three pizzas for my dad's birthday. While ordering on the phone, we asked, "Are there any extra costs to sub a different vegetable for mushrooms?" We were assured there was no extra cost to swap veggies, so we went forward with it. Fast forward to receiving our food. We checked the receipt and we were charged $2.75 per "extra" ingredient. First of all, that extra cost is not industry standard even for Chicago. Secondly, they over-charged us $5+. We were very understanding that they had only been open for a few weeks at that point, so my dad called to get a refund. He had to spend longer than 30 minutes on the phone with them until the manager FINALLY agreed to offer a 10% off for a future visit, dine-in only. It was irritating they could not refund the money even after they agreed they had made a mistake. Additionally, it was strange they insisted this 10% off offer be for dine-in only because our order had been carryout. Experience 3: La Barra advertised having Stan's doughnuts available Saturdays and Sundays while supplies last. We picked up a few doughnuts last weekend successfully with no issues. I love this collaboration because it opens up Stan's Donuts to the Western 'burbs without a whole trip to the city! Experience 4: La Barra Riverside advertised on Instagram Buy One Get One Free pizza for Halloween starting at 4 PM. I called La Barra at 4:15, and the man on the phone had no idea about the promo. He said he would not honor the BOGO and that he did not communicate at all with whoever runs their social media. He mentioned something about a coupon book and that I would need to have an actual coupon from this specific book to receive an offer. He was initially cordial, but he grew impatient almost immediately as I tried to explain the Instagram promo to him. He was very firm and confident in there being no such promotion, as if I were making it all up. I called up the Oak Brook location, and the girl on the phone was super friendly and explained the BOGO offer in detail. Clearly something didn't get communicated to the Riverside location. Experience 5: At 5:30, I decided to call La Barra Riverside again in the hopes that the BOGO promo had finally been communicated. I called and the person on the phone did indeed know about the offer (score!). I asked a few questions about how the offer worked, then placed my orders. She waited until I finished the order to tell me that the wait for pizza was ONE AND A HALF HOURS! I have never ever experienced a wait time like that, including times when pizza places have offered similar promos/coupons. I tried ordering a thin-crust pizza to see if the wait time would be shorter, but she told me it would be the same. I decided to cancel my order. They didn't seem ready for the engagement such an offer would inevitably create. I'm hopeful that I'll have more positive experiences in the future, but the track record as it stands doesn't make me want to go out of my way to go to La Barra Riverside. The business has not demonstrated the level of professionalism I expect for restaurants I choose to frequent. Who knows what will go wrong next time? read more

I ordered a pizza for delivery from here & normally it takes around an hour. After an hour of waiting, I called to get an eta. I was told it would be delivered within 15 minutes. I gave it a half hour and called back. They told me my pizza was still in the oven and to give it 13 minutes. After waiting a total of 2 hours, I receive a pizza with the wrong toppings and with NO SAUCE at that! How does this even happen??? I received nothing but bread, cheese and green peppers. I ordered via Uber and after an hour waiting I checked and the order was cancelled. No notice was given. I called Uber and was told that it is the restaurant's responsibility to communicate with customer. This restaurant has complete indifference to customers. Staff is wonderful but I cant say same about food. Ordered the Sunday Gravy and it was , no lie a pool of pasta in water . I sent it back and it took only about 3 minutes to return . I say return because rather than give me a new serving of a real sunday gravy, they must have put a plate on top, tipped the water out then spooned on some regular marinara . on the now "drained " pasta , one tiny meatball and one braciole .None of the few measly pieces of meat was cooked in this gravy . They should be ashamed . It took a lot for me to say something and send back . Husband had two small plates - sausage in a pool of grease and olive oil and the best dish - the Brussels sprouts. Came here for dinner with a few other friends on a Saturday night. The atmosphere and vibe is cool, local pizza joint in riverside, but also a nice spot to grab dinner with some friends. We ordered some appetizers (beets and grilled calamari), good wine selection. My friends ordered some very yummy pasta dishes, the 8 finger cavatelli in vodka sauce as well as the Garganelli Panna pasta dishes to be exact. I split their BBQ pizza with a friend (super yummy and definitely recommend!) my boyfriend is gluten free, so they have GF options (10in pizza and pasta dishes). 4 stars because of service. I think our server was just having an off day, I'm not sure but we weren't visited from her for about 15/20 minutes when we first arrived, instead the manager came and another manager checked in on us at the beginning. When she did come, she didn't bring enough plates, then when we got our check, I didn't get my signed copy, and she instructed me the sign another receipt it was weird, it just seemed like she was never around and when she was there were mistakes all the time. I have been to LaBarra several times in the past year, for full dinners, small plates, carry-out pizza, and just drinks at the bar. We have had consistently good service, and the food is delicious. I've ordered the braciole with polenta appetizer at least three times, and I love it. It doesn't taste like my grandma's, so I don't know if it's "traditional" or not, but it's melt-in-your mouth tender and really flavorful. Two small plates is usually enough for a full dinner, and since I can never decide, that's what I've usually ordered. My husband has had full entrees and been quite happy. I like the thin crust pizza, and it's in our family's regular rotation for pizza nights, though it's a bit pricier than some of the other neighborhood spots. The bar is a great spot to have a cocktail and a small plate, and while there are a number of TVs, it's not overwhelming. I have brought others here, who have returned on their own. It's always unfortunate to have a bad experience at a restaurant you enjoy. Our party of three (two adults, one toddler) was seated this evening in a restaurant that was probably 50-60% full. After waiting for about five minutes, and before our waiter introduced himself, another party was seated immediately adjacent to us. Four or five minutes later, their waiter comes to introduce himself to them. A few moments later, our waiter comes to introduce himself, and take our drink order, which was a glass of wine, a mixed beverage, and a kid's milk. About ten minutes later (20 minutes into our dining experience), we realized we never received any follow-up service, and spotted our drinks at the bar. Five to ten minutes after that (half an hour into our meal), a new lady brings us our drinks. We comment that the table adjacent to us has already received our appetizer before we even placed our order. We ordered one 14" thin crust pizza with a few standard toppings, one individually-sized thin crust pizza with pepperoni, and a standard pasta dish. About 30-45 minutes later, the party next to us had signed their check, and was on the way out the door. A few moments later, we received our food. There was nothing wrong with the food, it was good (as always), but the terrible service we received, and the fact that a group that arrived after us who ordered an appetizer and a main dish received and finished their entire meal before our food even came out is unacceptable. The replacement waitress was kind and checked in on us several times, and offered to comp us desserts and/or an appetizer, which we appreciated. Unfortunately, that doesn't really remedy the situation and the fact that we had to wait for so long. Upon leaving, we spoke with the manager, who was also apologetic. We weren't (and aren't) looking for La Barra to do anything further to remedy the situation, rather, we just want to let others know that some wait staff could use additional training. read more

Mediocre experience at best. Three of us had dinner there on a Sunday around 6 pm. Service was a bit sluggish, but maybe Covid and a staff change to dinner slowed things down. Our waiter was OK, but it took a while to get things moving. I can't say anything about the physical plant itself since we of course ate outdoors. Eh, 2020 strikes again. But the food was a meh at best. My Fettuccine Alfredo with chicken was pretty dry, with not much chicken or sauce and a relatively small portion to boot. My F.I.L. had Chicken Parmesan which was pretty dry too, with a small amount of pasta on the side, also with not much sauce. The wife's whitefish was OK, but nothing special. Dinner was about $112 with two glasses of wine and a couple of Pepsi's, which is sort of on the expensive side for what we got. The bottom line is we won't be back, there are far too many really excellent Italian restaurants in the Chicago area to accept so-so dining. For that kind of money I'd suggest going down to Little Italy and going to Bruna's Ristorante to have dinner in a genuine old school Italian place... read more

These guys have it figured out. This is our new favorite place to eat in the area. Service has always been spot on. The food is really well prepared and always good. They have a decent wine list but I'd like to see it expanded a bit. A really welcome addition to the Riverside dining/bar scene. Parking is not so good in Riverside so having Valet Parking is a really nice touch. The pizza is really good. The Braciole is fabulous. I do like the appetizer better than the entree. The app is served over polenta and entree is over Pappardelle. Barese sausage and peppers and roasted sprouts are really good apps. For dinner any of the pastas or the chicken parm are great options. Be warned that on the weekends you will most likely need a reservation. Place fills up really quickly and stays busy late. I do want to give a shout out to the bartenders Carl and Oz. The Food is outstanding and includes one of the greatest peasant dishes ever to come out of an Italian kitchen: Bricole (Rolled stuffed steak braised in tomato sauce). The décor is Subdued Neo Modern that is stylish without being gaudy. But, the constant background music is thumping Hip Hop. It can not be enjoyed by anyone over fifty, unless they believe in being Best Friends, Not Parents, of their teenage children. The room acoustics are such that the music makes it difficult to enjoy any meal and impossible to enjoy a romantic dinner. However, we just tried to order pizza to go here in Riverside, and the friendly woman who answered the phone said that the POS system wasn't working, and thus we could not get a pizza to go. So apparently, I could walk in and sit down and order, but can't order to go. (?) Is it that difficult to write down an order (even with ...HORRORS...a pen) noting, "TO GO" and move on? Technology seems to have made most of us (more) stupid. And so, we ordered "TO GO" from Lou Malnati's instead. I will try again, and if the experience is better, I will update. read more

I have had a lot of great times at La Barra, and the food is great. My favorite is the pizza it is great, and if you are in town I would recommend getting some pizza here. The only problem is the pizza is sometimes burnt and needs to be sent back. I have not had any problems with any other item on the menu though. The environment of the restaurant is cool and different then a lot of the pizza places in Chicago. They could also use some more space because it is usually packed to the brim on any night. They have got the whole carry out system nailed down and you should order out from there. The bar is very large and cool with a huge tv to watch the game on, so it is a very popular location for sporting events. The restaurant also has a section that can be closed off for parties and family gatherings, and I see people in there frequently. read more

So disappointed tonight. Went for a night out with friends. The appetizers we ordered were sub par to say the least, the garlic knots were not garlicky or knots at all, the were legit croissants with some parsley on top. The "whipped" ricotta tasted old and was clearly prepared way before hand. We weren't going to say anything but then we got our dinner. The Tuscan Country pizza was a joke, dry as hell and had burnt, unrecognizable cheese on it, also random ingredients that were not on the menu and didn't have ingredients that were listed...like goat cheese. The worst part was that the eggplant Parmesan was thick, chewy and had a long hair baked into it. When we told our waitress, she asked what would you like us to do? I said well there is nothing else we want because we haven't enjoyed any of it. She says she'd have the manager come over. Instead of coming over, the manager, who had his mask under his nose or off the entire time we were there while he walked to tables where he only clearly knew people and schmoozed, he sent her back with a bill only comping the hairy eggplant and the dry pizza. He never came and apologized, he never came and asked what was wrong so he could address with the kitchen, he never showed any concern for upset customers at all. He left the waitress to deliver the check and profusely apologize for bad food and horrible customer service, neither of which were her fault. In addition, many people walked around without any masks on at all, again people who clearly knew the manager. We were double charged for the meat on our salad, and our bill was almost $100 for food (an appetizer, salad, 2 drinks, and a dessert) and service that was sub-par (our waitress was very nice, but the same can't be said for the hosting staff. Beyond not seating where the reservation was, tables are not 6' apart in covid compliance) We walked past the place several times and were very excited to go, but disappointed to find out that it was very corporate feeling--poor quality but expensive food and not great service. I've been back twice since and it continues to impress! We definitely prefer the Thin over the Artisan pizzas. It has a perfect crisp.. from the outside all the way to the center. Besides the amazing Cacio e Pepe, we've also tried the Shells & Broccoli! It's delicious! A very light sauce with huge flavor! The red chili flakes give it a slight kick.
