At a tavern where dinners delight, And the service is always just right, The restroom's a fright, A grimy old sight, But the drinks make it well worth the night.

Not happy with my meal. Appetizers were great. Two guests, one myself, in my group ordered the corned beef dinner. We have had it MANY times before. It's normally corned beef, cabbage/carrots and BOILED POTATOES. We got THE WORST fried potatoes that were fried in dirty grease...NOT BOILED POTATOES. I told the waiter and he really didn't care. A lady came to clean the table. I said...are you the manager? She said...no I'm just a lowly server. By that time I was over it. Won't be back for the corned beef dinner I loved for many years. It used to be a good restaurant to go to. Very disappointed. Attached is the pic of the nasty potatoes...

The best part about this location is the service. The bartender and waitresses are all very friendly, and they come check on you several times throughout your meal. The food itself is very OK. We got the grilled cheese with tomato, and it was fine but room temperature. The fries were also under seasoned and needed quite a bit of salt. They have a large selection of drinks, a be prepared as many of them are not available. We had to ask for three different drinks before they had one of them available from their drink menu. Atmospheres is also pretty good. The lighting is a little dim, however, it is great. Come here on Tuesday night at 8 PM if you want to participate in some trivia as well!

My first impression of Irish Times is that it is an Irish Hooters; all of the waitstaff is young females in tight or very short black clothing. However, that is where the parallel ends. It certainly takes the Irish pub image seriously. The atmosphere is dark, cozy vibe with exposed brick or wood paneling, and plenty of Irish-themed nick-nacks adorning the walls. If you lived nearby, this would be a favorite cozy bar. There is also a private beer garden that will sit around 50 people. The garden is well established with trees, a couple of brick walls dividing up the place. Each table had an umbrella for additional shade. We started our meal with Crispy Brussel Sprouts (with curry aioli) - these are listed as a side rather than an appetizer but made a delicious savory and healthier starter over the carb heavy options under appetizers. For our main courses, we had a Smash Burger that had those wonderful, crispy edges. The Blues Bro's Burger (bacon, blue cheese, and onion rings -what is not to love), also shout-out for using real blue cheese and not blue cheese dressing. Fish & Chips was lightly batter dipped and had a light crunch. It was a bit on the greasy side like fish & chips should be. The Shepherd's Pie came in a large bowl to contain the gravy, my husband is a Shepherd Pie lover and has had it all over, he said he really enjoyed their take on the dish and would come back for this alone. There is so much on this menu I want to come back to try, e.g., Corned Beef tacos, Irish BLT, Chicken Curry, irvthe chicken pot pie. We did stumble upon a gift card deal at Costco - two $50 ($100 in total) gift cards for $75. It is a 25% sale to try the pub. The pub is across the tracks from one of Brookfield's best business districts with plenty of shops and restaurants.

This place is fantastic! My number 1 complaint is that everything was so sticky! The floor was sticky, the chairs were sticky (but wicked comfortable), the menus were sticky... just... sticky! I have no idea what they could even do about that or if they'd want to do anything about it, but I did not love the sticky... Food -- I had the "Shepherd's Pie" or Cottage Pie as it would culinary be called. It had nice, roasted (not ground) hunks of beef and bits of carrot, corn, surrounded by a moat of gravy. Absolutely divine -- I've had several of these pies and often there's too much cheese, but they put just the right amount of cheese to make a crust and left it at that! I took "home" leftovers to our hotel and actually had it cold, on the road the next day and it was great road food -- like a deconstructed pasty. Two people in our party had the beef stew (which is where I suspect the beef comes from for the "Shepherd's Pie") HUGE chunks of stewed carrots! Dripping in gravy, I read that many people said there would be leftovers and it was a huge dish, but neither person took home leftovers of the beef stew. Someone ordered the fries and it came with the horseradish sauce. I'm not a huge fan of that sinus-cleanser spice, but this sauce was well-balanced and very yummy. The fries were average, an okay vehicle for the sauce. All around -- I'd definitely go back and recommend. Perhaps go after a fancy event, not before (like we did!)

This was the place that I had my first drink as a 21 year old, before going downtown to celebrate. Years later I popped in during my grandmothers wake, for a shot in her honor with my brother and dad. The service is great. I love the interior and the beer garden, it was honestly what we needed during a long, and sad day. I also appreciated the nostalgia. Glad to see this place is still around after all these years!

    And here we are!!

It's great being amongst the Southside Irish, especially during St. Patrick's day weekend. What a friendly greeting, we said it was our first time here so the gentleman took us for a tour of all the rooms and outside areas before we landed in our own room, by the entrance. Such friendly service overall and we decided on the chicken strips - which were plentiful, the Reuben burger - which was unique, and the corned beef and cabbage - which prevented me from cooking my own St. Patty's meal. FYI, their corned beef and cabbage is so much better than my home made version. While being in this pub atmosphere - I couldn't help but think of the Emerald Isle, Trinity, Waterford, Kilkenny, Kiliman Gaol, Jameson, Guinness, County of Cork, Ring of Kerry, the Cliffs of Mohr, Dublin, Teeling, Galway, etc. Thank you Irish Times, for that brief feeling of being back in Ireland. This reprieve was very much needed. And thank you for the great food as well. Top of the evening to ya!!

Ordered a $16 wedge salad for pickup. I'm just gonna leave the picture to show what I got. There are no words. Just...never again.

They have an outdoor patio, and since the weather was nice we took advantage of it and sat outside. Perfect day to just slow down and enjoy the weather. The staff were super nice too and everything felt easygoing from the start. I ordered the Bourbon Glazed Steak Skewers with wheatberry rice and homemade potato salad. When the food came out the first thing I noticed was how tender the steak looked. First bite confirmed it. The meat was juicy, soft, and had this smoky char flavor from the grill mixed with the sweetness from the bourbon glaze. The glaze itself was really good too. It had that sticky caramelized flavor with a little savory kick behind it, so every bite was a balance of smoky, sweet, and salty all together. The peppers and onions added a nice freshness too. Honestly the rice and potato salad were both bombsas well. The potato salad especially tasted homemade in the best way. Creamy, flavorful, and perfect with the steak skewers. The whole experience was just really good.

The previous poster was right, Joe's Saloon is on 47th Street just west of Plainfield. If you're coming from 1st Avenue, it's about a Mile west. I like this bar because of the odd, undeliberate charm, cheap drinks (ahem dollar Schlitz all day everyday), decent jukebox (used to be awesome before they went digital... Patsy Cline awesome), and the infamous Dollar Mystery Shots. Your choice of A, B, and sometimes C, depending on what stock the owner, Ellen, thinks they need to get rid of. Bartenders are laid-back and can put a drink to a face -- I rolled in after not being there for 6 months and they had it poured before I could say hi. The late-great Joe is adorned on a small canvas above the windows and REAL!? wood paneling on the east wall. Soft orangish-red neon illuminates most of the saloon, glowing up from behind wood molding - Not an ideal lighting plan, but almost accidentally the PERFECT lighting level. The bar isn't really a "kept secret" at all -- housed in a stand-alone building with all-season Christmas lights framing the peaked roof, it's not that hard to spot. That said, it owes a lot of its odd mix of clientele to it's location. People that roll into Joe's aren't there on accident. The south side of the street is a vast empty expanse that used to be a massive train depot for the nearby quarry, and the north side of the street is an industrial/9-to-5 business strip where even the liquor store closes early. Now that I've played the alcoholic sociologist, lemmie posit that the out-of-the-way-ness of the bar directly contributes to what kind of people come through the door -- people that specifically left the house to be at Joe's. Aside from College Break overspill (Easter, Spring Break, Winter Break), there's always a place to sit and rarely an loudmouth over-served coed to scowl at. This place can be blue collar, no collar, and popped collar at different times of the day (and if a sporting event is on). There's live music for a cover sometimes, but nothing too consistent. There's a terrific Quizzo once a month, though the questions skew towards the 40-something locals that attend and run the quiz. (One standard category is called "Where are you in the Western Suburbs", another was "Local TV News Anchors".) But, you're there for the experience anyway, so, whatev. While other locals are living past glories with their gym teachers at Kenny's, avoiding eye-contact with old flames at Palmer's or packing it in at local cavern-turned-Irish-bar Brixie's, what filters through to Joe's are the low-key neighborhood joes of all ages looking to sit back, drink, play Meatloaf on the jukebox and maybe play a round or two of Word Dojo.
