What a wonderful restaurant! The staff and decor were lovely, and the food was delicious. Be aware that their salsa is quite hot and chille-based. I had the Carne Asada burrito which was filled and stuffed with grilled beef, as well as onions, cilantro, lettuce, tomatoes, and guacamole. Next time, I'm here, I plan to try the abuelita's enchiladas! read more

La Abuelita had some good heart to it. The spacious real estate inside ended up translating to a pre-dinner rush meal. it was very easy to take note of the swaths of different people the establishment welcomes, because it appears to be the best Mexican food for miles. Contractors, couples on a date, families - a bunch of different demos were represented the evening we showed up. I got the green chili chicken enchiladas, with rice and beans. My companion got a fried and dyed tilapia entree. My enchiladas were fire, and I'm just talking about the flavor profile. It's nice that a place like this did not pull punches with the heat quality of their sauces and salsas. Come to think of it, the complimentary house chips and salsa at the top of our meal also featured a hot salsa. We Angelenos loved the default style but it constantly had the alarms going off. Really, it was a good way to break in our palates because the green sauce managed to be even hotter. There were enough varied notes between the two iterations of heat to keep the meal interesting. My wife thought the tilapia was evenly fried. She didn't have as much fun with the rice and beans, the otherwise plain sides, but they helped get the whole tilapia down. This place fed us. It wasn't too hard to settle on a place that, from the Yelp outset, purported to humbly serve authentic Mexican fare. If you're passing through Rawlins like we were, and you're happy to have a meal, don't let this place pass you by. read more

Food was delicious and fast, despite the sign saying "we are not a fast food restaurant, we make your order fresh." I had the enchiladas. I couldn't decide between Roma or verde sauce, so they did 1/2 and 1/2. Which was nice, but I'd wished I did just verde. The Roja was very good, but the verde was fantastic! I agree with previous reviews the salsa is delicious but also extremely HOT! Was driving through and wanted something besides fast food and this was perfect. Highly recommend, will come back if I'm ever in the area. Service was fantastic. The things I disliked were personal preference things: the chairs were heavy and clunky and very hard. They had a lot of charm but hurt to sit on. The music was a bit too loud, but we were seated right by them so that was a factor. read more

Great food. Excellent staff. An overall fantastic experience. Oh yes, and the food? Outstanding! Don't pass this place up. You can thank me later. read more

La Abuelita - Restaurant area. - Mexican Near Me - Rawlins, Wyoming

Excellent food and service. I can see why they have high Yelp ratings. We had enchiladas verdes and torta de pollo.

We came here after a horrible experience at the Thai restaurant down the street. It was a great way to save the day! We were greeted cheerfully & promptly, & seated right away. Our server was super friendly & the food came out quickly. We got 3 different kinds of tacos & all were delicious! You get 3 of those little street tacos. Very fresh & flavorful. The decor is also cute with a Mexican cowboy theme. read more

No regrets stopping for a late dinner while traveling through town. Fun and comfortable ambiance. Service was quick and helpful, warning us off the hot salsa. Tasty food at reasonable prices. Highly recommend. read more

They were out of salsa and cheese and not much on the menu was available the day we visited. Ordered a tortilla filled with can beans, no cheese. Not the best, would pass it up. It is also very expensive!!! Se quedaron sin salsa y queso y no había mucho en el menú disponible el día que lo visitamos. Pedí una tortilla rellena solo de frijoles, sin queso. No es el mejor, lo dejaría pasar. ¡¡¡También es muy caro!!! read more

Ambiance.. love the tables. Just don't like the screaming kids. Service. Good Food.. no taste on chili relleno's. Shrimp taco are good. I guess I am very spoiled when it comes to Mexican food as my father is Mexican. read more

They serve a more authentic Mexican food, which I don't care for. What really turned me off (turned my stomach) were the flies in the restaurant. One landed on my plate and got stuck in the food. I paid my bill and left read more

4.4 stars? Out of what? 30? Come on....these have to be all gringo reviews. This place is....bad. Walked in- 4:30pm on a SATURDAY. Not a single other person dining in the restaurant! NOBODY! (Should have been the first clue.) Young woman sitting at a table (who ends up being the server) yells over: "Sit wherever!" Gee, ya think? She gets up, brings menus- "Would you like chips and salsa?" Sure. Cha-ching- $2.99 on the tab. (odd that this wasn't mentioned.) "Would you like something to drink? Just Pepsi. Cha-ching- $3.57 each on the tab. My partner orders the Ground Beef and potato tacos, and a chili rellano. OK- the chili rellano comes out and it's TWO dimensional. Just a fried, flattened chili. That's it. Cha-ching- $5.00 on the tab. Ground beef and potato tacos? Booooring. It was more like a Shepard's pie taco, with lettuce. (BTW, are there no dairy cows in Wyoming? No cheese on anything.) Bleh. I order a Carne Asada Burritio. I should have taken a picture. Seriously, a WARMED flour tortilla (think microwave, 30 seconds) with dried meat, some onions, lettuce, and cilantro inside. NOT folded on the ends, or sealed, just rolled. Like it was rolled by a gringo. NO cheese to be found. "May we get a side of Crema to add some flavor?" Sure! Cha-ching- $1.25 to the tab. Listen, if you KNOW Mexican food, and you come here....you've been warned. The WORST Mexican restaurant in SoCal (and there are plenty) is miles ahead of this place. They should rename this place...La Abuelita No Puede Cocinar read more

We were driving through town on our way to Chicago and found this place thanks to Yelp reviews. Yelp reviewers did not disappoint on this one! All the food we got was delicious and the salsas were amazing-had some real spice to them! We got our food to go and the nice lady who helped us gave us plenty of chips and salsas to go around for all of us. Definitely bookmarking this place for the future! read more

Nice little place in Rawlins, Wy Only Mexican food in town so I thought I would try it after a long day of traveling. Mexican is always my comfort food on travel days. Relative new building in a old town. Ordered the chips and Salsa! Oh my! Keep this Salsa out of the reach of children. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to taste besides pain. I had to wave off two people who wanted to give me the Heimlich maneuver. Stopped the pain by draining my Margarita. Ordered more beer. Now for just some plain ole enchiladas. Waitress asked if I want green or red sauce. I get asked this all the time and I always get both because I love variety. After the Salsa what was I thinking! My ears are ringing, sweat is pouring off my forehead and I can no longer focus my eyes. I let out a large belch and the bus boy that walked by fainted. The owner seemed offended when I told her that her green chili had given me brain damage. Waitress saved my tongue from bleeding by pouring beer directly on it from the pitcher. I no longer have any lips! It really ticks me off that the other customers asked me to stop screaming. I need to be by cold water in the morning. Good thing there is creeks nearby. Sure was good! read more

I had high hopes for this place from the prior reviews but the barbacoa tacos did not have much flavor just a lot of fatty pieces. The shrimp tacos were not good, the amount of jalapeños added to the tacos was excessive. I ended up scraping off the jalapeños and eating the shrimp by themselves. The service was a bit odd (rushing and running around) they were rushing but we arrived and hour and a half before close come to find out they decided to close and hour early but that plan was changed when people kept pouring in so just fyi they might be closed with out notice. read more

A new addition to for Mexican restaurants in Rawlins. Recipes are a bit different than some other nearby by restaurants but the food was excellent! I had three pork tacos when I came here for the first time and enjoyed them considerably! Of course always pleasant to have chips and salsa too! Service was very good as it was friendly and prompt. Definitely a place to try in Rawlins! read more

How this place gets any positive reviews is beyond me. I must have dropped in on a bad day. The food was seriously discusting, I should have taken a picture as that would have told the whole story. The service was just a bad, a waitress that could care less about the customer. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place!!! The reviews on this place make me not trust reviews! Four and a half Stars?!?!? read more

A solid Mexican restaurant! The restaurant is clean and nice. They have a large outdoor seating area. Outdoor seating is nice, but close to the road so there is some noise. It's a little blocked from Rawlins' never ending wind which is good. When you sit down they offer chips and salsa for $3. The salsa is great, and the chips were good. I got their chili relleno. The taste of the pepper was awesome, but it was WAY greasy, which was a bummer. It did come with the choice of tortillas to make chili relleno tacos with, so that was a nice touch! Beans and rice that came with the dish were way good. Nice portion size. Take home boxes are styrofoam, which is always disappointing. Someone else in my group got the asada and enjoyed it. A good experience overall! read more

Good, really good Mexican food. Stopped here on a trip to Denver as we needed lunch and there's not a lot along 80. Stopped here based on what the kids wanted and was pleasantly surprised how good it was. Coming from San Diego we've got tons of the best Mexican food and La Abuelita would fit right in. Will stop in again next month on our way back to Denver again. read more

My hubby and I ate here for the first time and it did not disappoint. The salsa was spicy and chips warm and crispy. I had the chilaquiles verde and oh my so goooood. My hubby had the carne asada and he enjoyed it. We sure will be back. Service OUTSTANDING! read more

I have eaten here a couple of times while in town and the service has been great. The fajitas are great, and the salsa has the best taste.

Food was ok although very hot spicy for someone who likes spicy. Out of most beers. Also, terrible service. Gum chewing waitress with gum sticking out of here teeth. Ordered drinks and she wandered around speaking to friends. Finally someone else came and retook drink order. Asked for sour cream 4 times with 2 waitresses but didn't get it until our meals were almost finished. read more

This is my favorite place to eat at in Rawlins. Every time we go, the food and service are both excellent. My go-to is the carne asada plate and my husband's is the cheese enchiladas with no sauce. The shrimp tacos are also amazing, as is the deviled shrimp (I think that's what it's called). read more

Food was great and service was spot on. Great dining. The house lemonade was as good as it gets, and the burritos are a work of art.

The chicken from the chicken fajitas tasted like salmonella and was weirdly fatty (not sure it was chicken). The cheese dip and chips tasted good but sits out on the counter. Service was good and food came out in a reasonable time, that being said I've never had chicken that has tasted that bad at a restaurant. At one point the single server dropped the tin-foil wrapped tortillas on the floor and placed it back on the plate on top of lettuce for another table. Avoid this place if you can. read more

New favorite spot to stop on I-80! Fun ambiance, great flavor, cheerful and helpful staff.

We were weary travelers and came upon this gem. It was a cozy, family-friendly, and generous with portions. It was by-far some of the best Mexican food that we have had and best meal we have had on the road these past ² days. Warning though, if you are a sissy-la-la when it comes to sauces you better ask for some sour cream and homemade horchata! read more
