L.L. Bean, an amazing place to get some winter outdoorsy gear! This store location in Legacy Place, Dedham, is enormous with 2 floors. They've got water bottles, shoes, and outdoor recreational equipment on the first floor & on the second floor they have a mix of women's, men's, and kid's clothing. I adore their duck boots, a must for the winter time... specifically their shearling-lined insulated model. Incredibly warm, perfect for snow days. Their "wicked good moccasins" are incredibly comfortable and I love wearing them in the fall/winter time. I've definitely gone through several pairs. Backpacks are super nostalgic; I had mine with my initials as a kid haha, honestly I would get another one. Good quality, got about ten years of use out of that backpack & it allowed me to carry 5 heavy textbooks and some more. read more

I personally like this location, store is always tip, top, shape! Everything is organized, clothing, camp gear, boots and hikers, whatever you're looking for they have really. Them and REI kind of remind me of each other. I can always walk around and look at different things. Checked out some jackets, and slippers! The water bottles for some reason had a lot of scratches on them etc so passed on those but all in all always a great spot to pick up a gift or two of something practical. Pricing is on par with their competitors, usually don't see too many sales or promos outside the sales rack. Will be back! read more

The level of service in this store has always impressed me, especially when dealing with the installation department. The patience, knowledge and friendliness of the staff who handle roof racks and bike racks is outstanding. When I first purchased my Thule rack, they helped me determine what parts I needed, including the addition of some parts not carried by L.L. Bean. Throughout the course of several phone calls, they patiently answered every question, and then did an excellent job of installing the roof rack. When it was time to remove the roof rack, they showed an equal measure of patience by answering all of my questions during several phone calls. They patiently explained the parts that I needed to bring with me for the removal process, and re-scheduled the appointment twice without complaint. 5 Star shout-out to Dan who help me with boots and Jack (Jake?) at the register on Saturday morning March 30th! I was there when the doors opened at 10am, it was the day before Easter and I had a full-list of things to do. Dan helped with an exchange of Bean boots which were "off" from the usual (odd) way they are sized and wrote up a ticket for me to bring to the register to make it easy once there. Jack (Jake?) had the exchange processed in no time, the new pair was shipped on Monday morning and received here the next day (the benefit of being near Freeport is that almost everything arrives next day!). Parking at Legacy Place can be wild at times, so go early and park near an exit for your quick escape. read more

Time for an LL Bean update since I recently visited this particular satellite store to look at some sweaters and to pick up some wool socks (they sell the best Ragg Wool socks anywhere...I have been buying them since I was in college and nothing keeps your feet warmer) and the wool is soft and not itch inducing). Coming here continues to be a great option when in need of checking out clothing sizes in person versus buying something sight unseen online although L. L. Bean continues to have great online customer service and an excellent website. The store is a good size with access to knowledgeable sales people. I appreciate the two floor layout which feels spacious and comfortable for browsing...(although not at all like the mammoth flagship store!) The checkout line can be a long wait though. In my original review, I bemoaned the customers who took advantage of L.L. Bean's excessively liberal return policy. In the last couple of years or so, the company has stopped that policy precisely for the reason I cited in that first review which was people gaming the system by returning things that were years old and complaining the items had "worn out". Of course you can still return items but you will need your receipt and the return has to take place within a reasonable period of time...and not just because your 10 year old boots have given out. No more lifetime guarantees but honestly, that never made sense particularly for clothing to begin with. If there is something very specific you are looking to try on, call ahead to ensure they have it in stock as I have discovered that at times they don't have every item. Parking at Legacy Place can be a nightmare especially during the holiday season so my advice is to plan to be here when the store opens in the morning. Although I don't buy tons of things at L.L. Bean I do have their credit card which I think has been worthwhile. When used to purchase things online you always get free shipping. If you buy anything that can be monogrammed (like their fabulous canvas tote bags) the monogramming is free, and you earn "Bean Bucks" with each purchase that can be put toward discounts on future Bean merchandise. Since I am obsessed with the extremely versatile canvas totes specific to Bean (and have at least 10 of of them in various sizes with and without zip closures), the free monogramming has been great. There is a whole Instagram page (called "ironic boat totes") devoted to showcasing how people in the requisite ten characters or less are monogramming their L. L. Bean totes. It's not just names and initials anymore! Fun! Another L.L. Bean satellite store is scheduled to open soon in Hanover which is closer to me than this store. I am excited to see what the Hanover store will be like. I do still love our summer jaunts up to Kittery Maine to visit the flagship store. Nothing can beat that experience. In the meanwhile this Legacy Place option is pretty darn good. read more

I came to the store looking for a high quality rain jacket, and not only did I leave with one that I am very happy about, but I took away a wealth of information on raincoats and waterproof material! Why is LL Bean still manufacturing clothes with PFAS? Please stop. A family member ordered a bathing suit last month and when I asked him to double check if it had PFAS, he finally came back with an answer that it did. In 2023, when these chemicals have been proven to be poisonous and cancer-causing, why is LL Bean still using them? They are called forever chemcials because they never leave the body or disintigrate. It is not worth our health and the harm to the environment. I won't be buying anything from LL Bean until they are completely PFAS-free. read more

While I have not been able to visit the flagship store in Maine; the Dedham, MA location is quite large compared to CT locations. We needed to grab some last-minute essentials while we were on vacation. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. There were some items we had trouble finding and it was very easy to find a store associate to help us. Checkout lines moved fairly quickly, parking however was a little tricky. read more

LL Beans hasn't let me down. There stuff is durable, high quality, and has a full warranty which I absolutely love. I just ordered two new lunch "boxes" on line. For about $13 bucks and free shipping I'd rather go with something that will last rather than have to replace a cheaper one in a few months. My girls are small and don't grow fast so I was able to get 5 strong years out of a parka and ski pants. I've been looking at their fall raincoats so when I saw their sign I had to go back. I've been looking for the fleece lined ones and hoped I could pick it up but as others have said this is a smaller store and they seem to carry the more basic popular items. The place does gives you the rugged outdoor feel like the other LL Beans stores do and wouldn't cha know they had rows of back packs and lunch "boxes" right out front. I myself like the LL Bean second stores like the one in Nashua and Concord NH. I don't think they call them second stores but "outlets". The prices are lower and they still have the LL Bean quality but for whatever reason the item either didn't get the final stamp of approval or it was an exchange or return with some special monogramming. I was so looking forward to the Hanover Ma store opening. I have visited the new store twice now. The store is a disappointment. First of all, the store is relatively small compared to other locations. It does look pretty and it is neat and clean with plenty of sales associates on the floor ready and willing to help if needed. What bothered me most was there are no marked departments such as mens, womens, childrens, no signage etc. indicating whether a jacket, shirt etc is a man's or woman's. Of course children's items are obvious but still not marked. I guess it is now woke to not apply gender labels. I attempted to try on a jacket today in my woman's size only to find out that I was trying on a man size jacket. Shoes are displayed on a wall. If you see a shoe or boot that you like you must first examine it to decide if it is intended for a male or female or gender neutral or other. I have always enjoyed shopping LL Bean retail stores but it is now a piece of work to shop the store. The 3 stars are for the store itself, not so much for the quality of products. read more

L.L. Bean Dedham, Please hire new people. The guy I asked for help was so incredibly dismissive and rude. I understand that it was the holiday season and the store was crowded and that he may have felt somewhat overwhelmed, but that is no excuse to treat customers poorly. It took forever to be helped and when I was finally able to inquire about the product I was interested, I was swiftly interrupted with a loud "We don't have it!". So, I began to ask if they had another color and before that question could leave my mouth, I was interrupted yet again with a "We don't have it!". Only this time it was louder and more agitated. I love L.L.Bean. Being from Texas, I had never really had a need for this type of gear and clothing, but over the past couple of years, I have become a huge fan. During Christmas, I bought my wife a winter pull over top. I got it home, took of the tags and washed it to get it all fluffy. I presented it to the wife who wore it. She was not happy with the fit but smiled and carried on. Finally I asked why she had stopped wearing it and she explained she did not like the fit. So off to L.L. Bean to put their words to the test. I had the receipt stuffed away so I gathered it up and off we went. Got to the store, presented the top and the receipt. They asked if we wanted in store credit or the funds put back on the card. In store credit was our option. They also put onto the value of the card, the coupons I used when I get the top. The wife picked out what she wanted, we perched it and off we went. They did not ask questions, they did not want to know if it had been worn. They just took it back, smiled and completed out the transaction. Between their in store service and the mail order, I am not sure there is really a need for any other winter apparel / outdoor place. read more

If you don't know what L.L. Bean is and you live in New England, you should at this point start driving west. A staple of most children's school life (who didn't at least know someone with an L.L. Bean backpack?) and a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts alike, this brand is pretty deeply rooted. While I have been to the Maine store (never pass up a chance to use a pun) it's a bit of a hike, and not feasible to make for one or two small items. As such, I was glad when this store opened up nearby. Store is really nicely done, albeit a bit small in comparison to other L.L. Bean stores. Layout is very logical and easy to follow. Place has a very rustic feel to it, essentially what you would expect. Decent selection of product, although there's definitely more in the catalogue. Great fishing section for the area, and they have some cool features like on site monograming, etc. Parking is more then ample, and staff is very friendly (often get said "hi" to about 5 times a visit). Can't really make any qualms about prices, since their standardized across all stores, but some things you can find a better deal on elsewhere. read more

A pair of Bean "Wicked Good Slippers", purchased October 2016, now with a cracked right sole after only 2 winters of use. Dedham store manager said these are worn out and offered to sell me a new pair for the regular price of $79. I had the slippers in their original box, original packing, with original receipt showing my purchase. I even showed her the card in the box saying "Guaranteed. You Have Our Word. Our products are guaranteed to give 100% satisfaction in every way. Return anything purchased from us at any time if it proves otherwise. We do not want you to have anything from L. L. Bean that is not completely satisfactory". I understand Bean changed their warranty February 2018 to one year, but as my receipt proves these were purchased before this change. An article in Business Insider from Feb 2018 explaining the warranty change, said "However, items that were bought before the change will be able to be returned after one year, as long as customers can produce a proof of purchase." This clearly is not the case. L. L. Bean refused to honor their warranty on these. For a $79 pair of slippers to fail after two seasons of use certainly does not meet my expectations. My husband and I had a great experience on a Saturday at the Dedham location. Shopping for Kayaks Mary was very helpful in facilitating what we needed and did not rush us. We appreciate Mary giving us space and time to decide what kayaks worked best for us and providing information on a great deal available to us. Charlene at the register was very kind and patient during the process of purchasing two Kayaks and a paddle, also helped me buy a paddle on line that will be delivered to my home. Two floors of outdoor gear in the new Legacy Place in Dedham. The staff is super friendly and helpful - we went looking for a hammock, which at the moment wasn't in stock, but they checked all the other local LL Beans to see if they had any, then as luck would have it a delivery of new hammocks arrived at the store. Hooray for hammocks!! They have a ton of outdoor gear (we picked up a new headlamp and a pair of binoculars), clothes and they do in store demos such as fly tying. This place is like candyland for anyone who likes the outdoors. read more

Turns out that the excellent salesperson showed me exactly what I wanted, and even something better that was less expensive I compared with prices online. LL Bean has always made incredible products, and always been a great place for myself to shop since LL Bean always has had more departments and more of a selection of all the outdoor "supplies" and clothing they sell. Plus, with the lifetime guarantee for all of their products, you seriously cannot go wrong by shopping at LL Bean. Lucky for me, this store opened less than ten minutes from my house about ten years ago. While still pretty new, it's my favorite LL Bean location around (both the Burlington and Mansfield locations seem more like ordinary stores.... with two floors and more design throughout, this one is more like an experience), and seems to always have exactly what I'm looking for. Staff are always friendly and extremely knowledgeable in every department. Even when I've been unable to find something, someone has been around or even offered to help out. Good business model to always have a decent amount of employees on-the-floor. Checkout is never busy, and overall the store isn't ever too congested with people... except maybe around the Back-To-School time when kids are purchasing backpacks. As I have said in a review for the Burlington, MA location - nothing can beet the flagship store in Freeport, Maine, but this one certainly beats the Burlington location and has a fantastic selection of flies, fishing gear and much more space in my opinion. The only this that is tough about here, and it has nothing to do with L.L. Bean at all, is the parking situation. While there is a "private lot and parking garage", when Legacy Place is busy in general, you should be prepared to go on your own hiking trip through the lot to get to to the store. The staff is great, as is the case with L.L. Bean in general , and everything is where you would expect to find it, neat and organized. read more

I brought my insulated bean boots in to the Dedham Ma store this summer. They are at least 20 years old and completely worn and leaking on the soles. It didn't seem right to try to return them, so I asked if they could be repaired. For $39, they took the boots and replaced the bottoms. I used to be of the mindset "LL Bean for life" until I went to return a book bag. The bag was 2.5 years old and both netting on either sides of the book bag were completely ripped. My son fills and uses his water bottle daily at school. Everything else about the book bag was in perfect condition. I thought that I would just take it back and have them replace the book bag since they guarantee their product for life. Well, when I arrived at Legacy place and showed the staff my son's book bag, they said "we can't return this, it's normal wear and tear". I asked them if they thought 2.5 years was a lifetime for a book bag and they couldn't answer me confidently. So I then left and thought that I would write to LL Bean explaining my experience. They promptly wrote back apologizing for my experience. The letter was filled with grammatical errors. The content of the letter said to return the bag to a store for another one. I already did that with no success! This, to me, is a glaring example the direction that LL Bean has gone to guarantee their products for "life". Two and one half years, in my opinion, IS NOT for life. "Wear and tear" will happen,I agree, but when the rest of the book bag is in pristine condition, I think the netting is defective or not a well thought out design. The staff at the store even tried to say "he probably drags his bag on the ground a lot". WOW. I will NEVER spend my money on any of their products again. If I could give ZERO stars for this company and the most recent experience I have had dealing with both the brick and mortar store and the online venue, then I would. So glad that there is a platform to articulate my viewpoint on this company and their current view on what they consider to be "a lifetime" and what they consider to be normal "wear and tear". read more

Actually, I'm VERY disappointed in my new Ultrawarm Long Down Coat! I bought it around New Year's and didn't wear it till I moved in March, and it is not nearly as warm as the first one I bought 10 years ago, the zipper has been a pain in the behind by jamming on a regular basis, and I had worn it a week and it already had micro holes through which feathers leak! It's not nearly as water resistant as it used to be -- get caught in one downpour and it soaks right through the coat onto my clothes! I spent a hard earned $200 on this down coat, and have not been the least bit satisfied with it. I don't know where you made these coats in the beginning, but now that you're making them in Bangladesh, they stink! The next time I save up to buy a winter coat, I won't be buying a Bean coat! read more

If you have ever been to the main LL Bean Store, three of this place could fit inside just the main building at the LL Bean campus in Freeport. For those who don't have that luxury, there are these anchor stores which are okay and give you a little taste but still arent anything special. I look at them as simllar to an REI or Eastern Mountain Sports. Being brand new in this awesome shopping plaza it is a nice store. The place is two levels and has clothing, hiking equipment and all sorts of outdoor gear as well as a friendly staff as always that make the visit nice. They also have classes and exhibits on certain days and the hours are nice as well. Not bad read more

I am usually somewhat dismissive of bad online reviewers, because service employees have such a difficult job and customers are frequently rude and demanding, but I've had enough lousy experiences with LL Bean now that they are really getting on my nerves. Last January I tried ordering some boots, and they were backordered for months, so I checked the online store inventory thing and they said that this store had my size in stock. So I drive an hour to there, and it's very busy. After looking around, and trying to get service for about 15 min while the staff exclusively helps cute girls who arrive after me, I finally get someone's attention and ask politely for the size boot I'm looking for. The guy disappears for ten minutes, comes back without it and without saying anything to me, and starts helping other people. OK, so this guy is useless, I think, and eventually manage to get the attention of someone else. I make the same request, and they tell me that they probably don't have it but she'll look anyway. I say that the website told me they had that exact thing when I had checked less than 2 hours earlier, and she *laughs* at me, rolls her eyes, and says something like "You can't trust that thing!" Hey lady? Maybe don't scoff at people for using your store's stupid website, it's not *my* job to evaluate the inner workings of LL Bean's IT division. (Not that I said any of this). After some more rudeness from the staff which continues to inexplicably lavish attention on other customers while ignoring me, at some point one of them just waves towards a scattered pile of mismatched boxes and says "maybe there are some over there." (And I know it's impossible to know that I'm not a cranky weirdo, because internet. But I'll just volunteer that I am a smiley, extremely well-mannered dude who is never upset about put-upon service people, and you'll have to take my word for it). It was so frustrating that I left without getting anything, not that it even would have been possible. Cut to, earlier this fall, I decide to try ordering from them online now that it isn't the Christmas rush. They have delayed my order twice now, and what I was supposed to receive in November is now "expected" for January. (Obviously, that isn't this particular store's fault, I just think it's funny that they seem to have me on some Enemy's List or something.) Hey LL Bean, stop being so terrible to people who are trying to give you money for your products! UPDATE: Having complained, they DID actually go overboard trying to make it up to me, shipping my boots early, calling me to apologize, and sending me a gift card. So they don't actually hate me. I've loved the other stuff I've bought from them so I really can't impugn the company, but the store was still not great. If I go back eventually and it's good, I'll change the rating. read more

I have been a cash/credit card customer of this retailer for about 50 years. I think it's time that we stop drinking the Koolaid when it comes to LL Bean. A few years ago I purchased an item (cash) at one of their other locations and went to their Dedham store to recover A) a credit B) an exchange or C) a refund. I realize that this iconic brand has had to revise its return policies to prevent being beleaguered by fraudulent claims, I get it. But this item was one of their brand's identified by their sales staff that was obviously defective. I was sent with a replacement item to the customer service counter where I was summarily treated in a very offhand manner. Not having the benefit of a sales slip and consequently no electronic record of this purchase (in spite of many other purchases made), I was refused any consideration whatsoever. It is time to reevaluate this merchant in light of its previous grandeur and its present honing of customer service/refund policies while extending to the public products of greatly diminished quality.
