I see that previous reviewers didn't think much of this restaurant. I want to offer my much more positive take.
I am in Paris on business and needed a place to eat dinner. This restaurant is convenient to my hotel, right across the street.
This place has decent combo deals: 29 euros gets you a starter ("entree" here), a "plate" and a dessert. Actually, let me back up. They bring you out slices of French bread and a very generous portion of butter just for sitting down!
Now, I started with the chicken rolls. (Sorry, I am not good at French, but fortunately, the menu is bilingual.) They are OK, basically egg rolls but not quite as filing as you get at an American Chinese restaurant.
My "plate" (PLAH-yay) was macaroni and cheese with pieces of ham. The macaroni and ham were basically what you could cook at home, but the cheese. Oh, the cheese! This is no Kraft or Velveeta box with powdered cheese or Cheez Whiz knockoff. This cheese is emmental. They basically take several hunks of the cheese and cook the macaroni in it, plus put an extra couple of slices and melt them on top. This emmental cheese is what sets the macaroni and cheese apart. It's mud game better than it sounds and more impressive than it looks!
Finally, it was time for dessert. I opted for the French toast. If you're an American and have never been to France (I'm an American and had never been to France before this week), I know what you're thinking. French toast? I can make that at home! No, you can't. Not this French toast. This French toast is so good, it's what earned this restaurant 5 stars from me. I can't even do it justice. All I can say is, imagine a short stack of 2 small pancakes. Soak them in the sweetest, most delicious syrupy goodness you can find (yet minus the sticky goo that is syrup) with just a hint of strawberry. Put a small scoop of ice cream on top. And voila! Wow! This was simply, by far, the best French toast I have ever had by miles. I don't think I can go back to American French toast after this.
If you do nothing else in Paris, be sure to stop by L'Hortensia. And don't leave until you have the French toast! read more
