This is supposedly THE spot to come for falafel sandwiches. You can't miss it with all the people standing in line and even more milling around scoffing down their pita sandwiches. It is also fun watching other shop-owners try to steer people off the enormous line and into their establishments instead. I'm glad we tried L'As du Fallafel, but definitely don't see it as a must do in Paris. You may come across it while strolling the Jewish Quarter, the place dense with shops and restaurants, but their fare was surprisingly disappointing. The sides of falafel balls I got were dry and unappealing, that we didn't even finish the bag of 10. They should have been fresh with such quick turnaround, but that just wasn't the case. The chicken shawarma was tasty, topped with plenty of white and hot sauce, but the chicken itself too salty. They give you a good serving size though, packing each sandwich to the brim with the sliced gyro meat. Although the line winded down the street, service was quick and efficient, with a guy taking your order when you're standing in line, so there isn't a big wait at the front. read more

Believe the hype, mon amis. My Mom and I were staying in an Airbnb flat just around the corner from Falafel Row, and my only regret is that I didn't take the time to patronize any of them sooner. Towards the end of our visit, I ventured up here, having been impressed by the 1.4k reviews. I went for a chicken shawarma pita, and wasn't shy about asking for both the spicy AND the creamy sauce. Not that the contents *really* needed them--the veggie mix was fresh (cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplant), the chicken was so flavorful, and the pita was soft and chewy. It was all I could do to save any to take back to my Mom so that she could have a taste. As for the ordering process, don't be a dummy like I was. I eventually did figure out that if you want takeaway, you need to go to the window on the left (as opposed to the big line on the right). But, what I didn't realize was that there was a guy taking orders on foot outside, and that you don't ask the fellas who are assembling the sandwiches. When the order-taker approached me, I said, "Oh I'm sorry, I don't speak French" in my best apologetic American-accented French. He didn't miss a beat when he replied in English asking me which sandwich I would like, which is when I noticed his notepad and pencil. Oops. Anyway, he takes your order and your money, and you give your order slip to the counter so they can make your heavenly sandwich. There was a big crowd even on a weekday evening, but they go fast. Juicy shawarma meats, crunchy vegetables, crispy falafels all covered in crack sauce. I loved the fried eggplants..! Very addicting, a bit of a mess, but 1000% worth it. The lines can be long, but you won't be disappointed. The one portion is very big. But it was so tasty, I would stuff myself to eat another one. Heck, I have regrets not ordering two. While you're in line, one staff member will come around and take your orders to speed up the line. They're very fast and efficient. It's surprising how small the space is that they work in without bumping into each other. The surrounding neighborhood is a very cool place to walk around. So order some food and take a stroll while eating the BEST falafel sandwich everrrr. Beware - They are closed on Saturdays. So I haven't been to Israel but have had falafel at the various well-known places in NYC. And while this is not the best falafel I've had in my life (that honor so far goes to falafel in Cairo), I can say it's definitely legit. But what elevates it to five-star material are the following things: - really tasty red sauce, smells amazing, garlicky and salty, not that spicy. Pretty diff from red sauce I've had before. Perfect complement to the rest and really made the difference. - very well-cooked eggplant, just the right level of greasy, charred, and soft. Could tell by the look from outside the window, on par with eggplant I've seen cooked when traveling in Turkey - actually don't recall seeing grilled eggplant so well made in the US. - a lot of pickled cabbage down at the bottom of the sandwich pocket. Again really complements the greasy falafel and creamy tahini. Fresh julienned cukes at top. No onions. I especially liked how there was no lettuce. (Too many falafel places in the US serve iceberg lettuce which is cheap but tastes terrible and has very little nutritional value as far as veggies go.) Overall pretty good, especially when the line is not ridiculous. Edit: second visit tried the shawarma. Was ok, not amazing. Just stick with the falafel. read more

On a few recommendations from various friends, my husband and I were excited to eat a late lunch here. Super happy my friends told us about this place!! We opted to sit inside and were seated quickly. The outdoor take away counter had about a 10-12 person line, so I'd venture to say sit inside to be served faster (though maybe the line moves pretty fast!). The service was efficient and we had our meals probably within 15 minutes. We ordered two classic falafel pitas and shared a side of fries. The fries came out first and were crispy and hot and a very large portion, definitely enough for 2 people. Then they brought us water, along with empty plates. After a few more minutes, our finished wraps were handed to us by our server, which I thought was kinda funny. Just like, here's your wrap, use that plate, enjoy! Super casual. Good stuff. The food was delish. Falafels surrounded by cabbage and eggplant, and a creamy sauce, (sort of like tzatziki, but not). And they bring out two spicier sauces which added to the yumminess. This place has a bit of a touristy vibe, it's in a popular walking/shopping area, but I could also tell that locals enjoy it. Servers struck up conversations with familiar people and we sat next to a couple who had clearly been there a few times. Don't tell Israel but this place has the best falafel I've ever had. The efficiency of this operation needs to be noted as well. Your anxiety will build as you walk up and see a massive line but have no fear, you can get the same greatness to go from the window on the other side of the line. They have staff that meet you so you can pay and get a ticket to order your sandwich. Within minutes you're presented with a glorious bounty of 10 mini falafels, packed with all the goodies--fried eggplant, pickled veggies, tahini, hummus and a chewy pita that holds up to the weight inside it. I got it spicy which was sortaaa spicy (if you like a mouth on fire, this won't be that but it adds a little hint of heat that's nice). The chicken sharwarma they served me was good - but needed salt. The falafel were good. Hummus really lacked flavor and seasoning. My wife got the grilled chicken breast - absolutely flavorless and rubbery texture. She hated it. Frequented and recommended by celebrities (Thanks Lenny Kravitz), L'As de Falafel attracts throngs of people upon dusk on a street in Paris's Jewish Quarter and for more than a good enough reason. I'm not sure if it's the spices, or the dressing, or the falafel itself (crisp but just crisp enough)...the sum of all those mixed inside a warm pita makes me drool when I think about how succulent that all was...I have yet to find any place in So Cal (right huh?) that can duplicate that. A must go if you're in Paris as it's not too far from Notre Dame Cathedral. Upon seeing this place on many must-try Parisian lists and its high Yelp reviews, I knew we had to try this place, especially for its cheap price! We walked over to this restaurant which is in a cool area, the Jewish quarter, full of bars and eateries. We decided to get takeaway since a falafel wrap is a very portable item and it's also half the price for take away (than dining in) at about 6 euros, which was a great deal. While I definitely enjoyed my pita (there were so many fillings!), I wasn't blown away. I'm pretty picky with falafel and this fell short; it was kind of dry. My fiance agreed, but he still loved his. The eggplant in the wrap was delicious however! I wish there was more of that. Also, I loved how they layered the wrap, so no one ingredient was just at the bottom. My fiance said he watched them build it (I couldn't because the counter is very tall), and he said that they layered all of the ingredients and repeated, so you got a good mixture of tastes in each bite! I just wish the falafel was better and moister, and that there was more sauce on mine. I'd come again though, but just don't expect the best falafel wrap ever. Didn't expect one of the best falafel wraps I've ever had to be in Paris, France of all places but here we are. Maybe it's the sauces with the red and white ones combining to make for a delicious concoction. Maybe it's the fact they use fresh ingredients including cucumber, cabbage, eggplant, and tomatoes. But all of that takes a back seat to the real star - the fallafel. Crispy and crunchy on the outside with a burst of flavor on the inside. L'As du Fallafel is the take away portion of this restaurant that is adjoined to a sit down iteration with an expanded menu. But the take away is the way to go at less than 7 euros a wrap. I've come back to L'As multiple times and it always satisfies. Except for the one time they were closed unexpectedly and the sit-down restaurant was the only thing open. No fallafel wraps available on that menu and the rest of the menu items such as the plates were average compared to the standout fallafel wraps. So check ahead and make sure they're open because for the budget traveler this is how you get filled with some really tasty food in the pricy Paris. read more

The portions are huge, so I shared these sandwiches with my wife. Both the falafel and the lamb are incredibly flavorful and they are very well-prepared. It's a great value and it's worth the stop if you are in the area. We came here after a family member recommended this place to us as a must to try in Paris for a vegetarian. It's located in a cute neighborhood with lots of boutiques and small restaurants. They actually have a lot of falafel restaurants in the vicinity, but everyone flocks to this place. There's 2 lines to get these falafels. One is for dine-in and one is for takeout. Luckily for us, we were pretty early for dinner so there was no wait for dine-in which seems rare according to yelp reviews! This was probably the best meal we had during our trip. We all ordered the falafel specials and french fries. The service was fast and friendly. The special is loaded with veggies, the falafel balls are delicious and crunchy, the pita is warm and fluffy, and the sauce is delicious. AND its affordable! Day 1: We read about this place in Rick Steve's guide and had to check out both the Jewish mini-district and this place in particular since I love falafels. There is a line but it moves very quickly. The cost is 6 Euro. It is an oversized falafel with about 7-8 small falafel balls that were perfectly cooked. There is tons of other stuff that looked like coleslaw, and I did see tomato, purple cabbage, eggplant, and cucumber. The whole thing is one big sloppy mess to eat but really tasty. It is definitely worth a try and I would recommend. I pity the falafel place directly across the alley who had no line and no customers. He needs to get into Rick Steve's book. Day 2: We returned to have lunch here again because day 1 was so good. We sat inside this time. The falafel cost 2 Euro more to eat inside. The energy and business can only be compared to New York. We got two falafels and two fresh lemonades. Both were excellent. I am updating my review to 5 stars. Best falafel I have ever had. The inside experience is better because the huge falafel is more manageable. Great experience. We are going to eat here again at least once more and probably more during our stay. I'm not a big falafel fan, but L'As du Fallafel was awesome! We got there just after noon, and noticed that there were several falafel shops in area - however L'As du Fallafel is the one with the longest line. There are actually 2 lines - one for takeaway, and the other to dine inside. Since the weather was relatively nice, and we were starving, we opted for takeaway. We ordered from the guy at the end of the line who took our cash and gave us a receipt that we handed to the guy at the window who made our falafels. The falafel balls were a bit smaller than I'm used to -- about grape sided, and were covered in a watery garlic tahini sauce, along with some crunchy pickled vegetables, with everything stuffed in a pita. The Ace of Falafel has, like, a billion reviews, and a near perfect rating, but i couldn't help feeling as though it's that this is the cream of France's falafel. I've definitely had better. Don't get me wrong - the falafel special (€9) is four to five layers of freshness, and a solid handful of herbed falafel balls. Pickled turnips, garlic cream, tahini, cabbage, and a spicy sauce - yes, get it spicy - mound up to an overflowing mountain of cornicopiety (in a pita). It's very, very good. But it's not the best.
