Most delicious iced coffee! I only wish they were open earlier when I walk by to work. This Italian deli consistently delivers. They also have great prepared foods (highly recommend the chicken salad) and pastries (Rice Krispie goodness). They sell rainbow cookies! I've been on a search for quality Italian pasta and goods after returning from a two week trip to Italy. While L'Appetito does a good job carrying a variety of imported Italian goods, they only had one pasta on the menu and that rotates on a daily basis. While I'm a fan of daily, fresh pasta, it had better be darn good if you're only offering one a day. Today they had penne with tomato sauce and some mozzarella and parmesan cheese on top. The pasta was cooked well, but the sauce wasn't anything special and overall the dish was something I'd expect from a chain Italian restaurant (see: Sbarro's). I hear good things about their paninis and I'll go back to try one of them out and another pasta, but for now this is at best a 3 star option mainly because of the imported Italian items offered and not because of actual food quality. read more

The best breakfast paninis in the entire city. Hands down. Egg and cheese and ham and tomato and onion (you can put whatever else you like on it though.) After 10:30 they have traditional Sicilian arancini. Big fried rice ball with meat and sauce in the center, it's a meal in itself and made just like the ones I had in Sicily. Damn good. read more

My Italian coworker raved about this deli for months before I finally gave it a try the other day. Upon walking in it reminded me of your standard deli/specialty shop with an authentic Italian flare. I reviewed the chalk board menu and had no idea where to begin. Finally, after careful consideration I decided on the JJ Special (marinated artichokes, fresh mozz, tomato and prosciutto on a fresh (gigantic) ciabatta bun) and put in a .25 lb. request for the delicious pesto tortellini they had chillin in the deli window. The guys in back whipped up my sandwich and off I went. Upon check out I couldn't resist picking up a couple of their home made treats (a lemon puff and fig bar). Once back to the office I unwrapped my sandwich and it was HUGE. The size of a small pizza without skimping on the fillers. Each bit was delish and I made it through half before deciding to pack the rest away for the next day. I couldn't help but try a couple tortellini and they were super tasty. The whole experience can be summed up with....Delizioso! Definitely give this place a try! read more

I really love this place. If you enjoy authentic Italian cheeses, gelato, pasta, etc, this is the place to go. I love the submarine sandwiches along with the fresh daily-made pizza. The prices are reasonable. My children love the chile. Service is quick. There are a few chairs in front if you want to eat at the restaurant but it is mainly a take-out lunch cafe. Not jumping on this bandwagon. The sanwiches are reasonably priced, but that's mostly because they are not very good. The meats are NOT fresh. It's been more than one time that I've ordered pastrami and it has that weird metallic sheen to it that tells you it's not fresh. The bread they use for their subs is not very good (way to bready) and for a "deli" it is incredible to think that they only carry one type of mustard. Only the cheap yellow mustard that only goes well with a hot dog. Come on! Even Subway carries some nice mustard options for their subs. Yes, Subway is better than L'Appetito. I said it. They have more options for fixings, are fresher, have better bread and their meats are equal or better quality. I would challenge anyone to a blind taste test and guarantee that Subway would crush them. Outside of the sandwiches, this place is SUPER expensive. All the prepared salads are incredibly over-priced. Coffee is very weak. Sorry I don't have any good things to say, but I just don't think this place is very good. Their staff is friendly so they get an extra star. read more

Got the Italian sandwich. Typical Italian on a roll or hero with some hot peppers that weren't hot at all. Bread was soft and kinda bland. Maybe too bland and too soft. It was eh. I ate half and didn't eat the rest. Was expecting the 4 star sandwich but got a "eh" sandwich. Nothing to write home about. Clean place and well organized. read more

I have fond memories from my college days when I lived at 30 E. Huron. Taking bong rips in the condo and riding the elevator down where I would stroll into this tiny deli in the building. Enamored by all the wonderful Italian imports I would make my way through the aisles to the back. Lunch for me regularly consisted of a pastrami and cheese sandwich. Extra mustard please. I have walked by this place too many times to count. It's in my hood, but I never stopped and went in. Well, today I finally stopped for a sandwich and it was sooo good! I also discovered that I actually do LIKE prosciutto- the stuff they sell here is what it is supposed to taste like, not the horrible stuff I bought at the deli of one of the Chicago areas supermarkets. I go here everyday for a damn good cup of coffee topped with just the right amount of soy milk. The best part- the ladies working behind the counter know what I order and if there is a line, my coffee is waiting by the time I get to the front to pay. I also frequent the deli often, well okay make that almost every day (I work down the street). I love the Il Parma, Turkey Tostino, Village Salad, and Spinach Arancini. The turkey sub and Italian sub are also staples along with the soups. I've gotten a frozen pasta sauce (puttanesca) and it was great. I love spicy food and this sauce was almost too spicy (in a good way!). read more

I had a pain au chocolat / chocolate croissant that was probably baked more than a day ago. Horrible--like a stale hamburger bun with chocolate in the middle. My kids each had blueberry muffins that were no better than what you'd find at a truck stop. I'll give it two stars because of the location--under the shadow of the Hancock tower--and because the illy double espresso wasn't bad. It was the only place I could find that was open in the mag mile at 7:30am. Oh well. read more

A nice place to stop for morning coffee. Sometimes the line gets backed up. My wife and I stop here, get the coffee to go on nice days, and either sit outside at the store, or across the street in the peace garden at the church. Be sure to get the coffee card. Two pleasant young women work the front desk. My only issue is that the other crew (guys of course) sometimes come to work wearing t-shirts with obscenities on them. Not exactly in keeping with the atmosphere they are trying to create. read more

It's unfortunate that I have to write this review, but I've been left with no choice. I have enjoyed L'Appetito for years at the bottom of the Hancock building. I have been to the Huron location a few times but have ordered delivery through GrubHub twice now and both times have been unfortunate. The first time I ordered to work the delivery never showed. I called the L'Appetito and GrubHub and they refunded me. Now, just a few days ago I thought I would give them a second try and ordered 3 sandwiches to work and only 2 sandwiches were delivered. Now mind you, I order food through GrubHub almost everyday for work and have never had an issue with delivery before. I called L'Appetito immediately and the women on the phone was not apologetic and insisted she packed 3 sandwiches. I then called GrubHub and the customer service agent was apologetic and called L'Appetito to figure out how to resolve the issue. The Grubhub employee called me back and said the restaurant refused to refund the cost of the sandwich and did not offer to replace the missing sandwich. I then asked the customer service agent to contact the delivery driver to see if a sandwich had fallen out of the bag. She called me back and said there was nothing in his car. The fact that I even had to go this far to track down a stupid sandwich is ridiculous. L'Appetito should have been apologetic that I never received the sandwich and offered to refund me or send me a new one. I called the restaurant back to let them know how disappointed I was in how they handled the situation, and that it was the second time my delivery had been messed up, The women on the phone made a comment about the race of the delivery driver and insinuated that he stole the sandwich. I'm still in disbelief on how they handled the situation. The L'Appetito employee then said she would give my number to the owner and she would call me back. It has been almost a week and no call yet. Its really is unfortunate on how L'Appetito responded to the ordeal and they did indeed loose business because of it. read more
