Thursday we were told a new one would be in by the following Monday and we could swap it out. Monday when we called to see if it was in we were told the new owners were not honoring old warranties. No call to notify us while she waited in her hot house for 5 days. Michael the manager and Vicky the purchaser pointed fingers at who dropped the ball and there was nothing the owners would do to help us. Horrible customer service. My father while alive spent all his time shopping at this store and this is how they treat long term customers. You lost our business and anyone else that will listen to how you treated our family. Shame on you!

On this recent visit, I especially want to recognize Mike L. I was working on a church project and, not being creative, was stuck regarding how to fix ribbons to a pole. He showed me several displays of hardware around the store that might serve my needs. After looking in three different areas, we found exactly the right item! And then I needed an enzymatic drain cleaner, and he walked me through the specifics of the various brands for sale, going through the details until we found just the right one for my needs. I've brought my pup in here as she continues to need some socialization and it always goes well. One time the clerks had their dog too and they became fast friends. This store really packs quite a bit into it. Of course it won't be as sizable as a Home Depot, but man oh man is the experience world's better. I found every single thing on my list which was great. It's closest size comparison to me would be the Ace in Westport, but hey guess what, you don't have to fear for your life in KC's worst intersection if you come here! It's easy to park in the lot out front, off of the always-busy 75th Street. My kids love it because they have a gumball machine, whoopie cushions, and other classics from back in the day when the world was making real attempts to be fun. He informed of the store's return policy and advised me he was unaware about the product. I was asked if I was a Westlake reward member, I am not. He proceeded to check me out. After paying I asked what it takes to be a member, he said I could go online and I'd get an email with a $10 coupon. Otherwise he said we'd have to start a new transaction. Speaking with a Canadian at a music conference this past May; I asked him what was the highlight of…read morehis first visit to Kansas City. His immediate and enthusiastic response was "I finally got to visit Harry J Epstein!". I was not familiar with the business even though I had lived in the Garment District. He explained that as a woodworking craftsman he bought a lot of his high-end tools on-line and had them shipped to Canada from KC because of the top of the line and rare items that HJE carried. He also told me that they will create a wonderful hand drawn piece of art on the order if you request "box art". He urged me to visit and this week I popped in before heading to work. I'm not a craftsman or even a slight handyman, but my visit was amazing. The quantity and variety is mesmerizing and I only visited the ground floor and basement, the top floors I saved for a return visit. I now just have to determine what my carpenter buddy needs as a Christmas present before returning. The journey into the basement was quite memorable, it felt as if wandering down into 19th century Kansas City's underbelly. I feel quite out of touch that it took a foreigner to get me up to speed with a 90 year old Kansas City retail icon. I so glad that such an old business has kept itself relevant and grown it's sales and reputation internationally in the digital age. May Harry J. Epstein Co prosper into the next century.

It's the biggest hodgepodge design I've witnessed. Additional bummer: This hardware store listed the deck stain I need online, so I drove out only to find they didn't have it. Not that many staff members had masks during the pandemic, the store is cramped, and just has a weird vibe overall. I'm glad this isn't my neighborhood hardware store, and if it was, I'd take the extra few minutes to go down to Euston Hardware instead.
