I'm not sure why there are so many poor reviews for this location. I live close by and come here on Tuesday nights for their $5 tanning special. Ashley is usually working and has always been friendly, informative and helpful. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because I prefer stand-up beds and have a fair complexion, so need I to use a level 1 or 2 and this location only has one stand up for each. You can tan for pretty cheap at LA Tan. I pay $20 a month for unlimited tanning, but I can only use the stand up bed or the regular lay-down bed. The biggest inconvenience is that they don't take appointments, which at times can cause you to wait a while to get a bed. read more

I'm less than impressed with this location. The staff is not that friendly or knowledgeable, the place looks like it's abandoned and vacant from the outside, the rooms inside have exposed wiring and light switches, no hooks to hang clothes up on (so you just put your clothes on the filthy floor). TIP: If you DO sign up, sign up a day or two prior to the 15th. That way, you have a "full billing cycle" almost immediately following your initial sign up. When I signed up, I only wanted to sign up for one month, however, because I signed up just after the beginning of the billing cycle, I have to go thru 29 days and then a full 30 days after that before I can cancel. Basically, my costs doubled. This could have been avoided if the guy that works there told me that when I went in and spoke with him a week prior....but conveniently, he didn't mention it. I'm kinda bitter about it still. I mentioned this to the girl and she didn't do anything about it and only said, "Oh yeah, that was probably Chris, sorry about that, I'll have to talk to him." I had been a subscriber to their monthly plan of unlimited tanning. However - after losing my debit card which automatically debited my account I accrued a balance of $100. They REFUSED to work with me regarding a payment plan, even prior to canceling the monthly plan. So, I, without a job need to come up with the balance - or accrue $35 / month in additional charges. This AFTER being a customer for three years. I refuse to set foot in any LA Tan establishment ever again. Their rigidity, lack of understanding and greed are incentive for me to go elsewhere! Pretty typical. I get a decent spray tan for a decent price - probably go about once or twice a week. I've had only good experience here at LA Tan Halsted. Been an LA Tan customer for years but been going to this location for the past 4 months since I moved. The staff is friendly & the beds work great. Sure they try to upsell you, that's the job/how the company makes more business.. but it works sometimes - I like the level 4 bronzing bed, it's fantastic. My membership at Ultimate Exposure was "frozen" and I needed a place to go before I flew south for a few days. I found a coupon on their website for 1-week free tanning which gave me access to all their beds, not just the basic. It normally takes me a week or so to work up to something more than a basic bed though. They did tell me that I should be fine in a level 3 bed after just 2 visits and I was burned for days so I didn't get to go more than 3 days of my 7 day free trial. Otherwise I found the place to be clean, but small since it shares space with a video store. The lights flicked off and on in the first bed I was in and since I was new to this place (but not to tanning) I had no idea if that was right or not, and it wasn't. I ended up going to a stronger bed mainly because the basic beds were full at the time and I did wait once for a bed, but a short time. read more

I don't normally tan much during the winter anymore. In a pinch to get a base coat before taking a trip to Hawaii, I was in need of some rays. I paid a visit to this LA TAN location to find a great accommodating staff, clean facility, good pricing, and NONE of the bulbs were burnt out. Do not go to this location!! Worst LA Tan I've ever been too. I normally go to another location off Fullerton (which is always great), and decided to give this one a whirl because I moved. Machine was clearly broken as my tan literally DIDN'T SHOW UP. I have been getting the same spray tan for 3 years and know how they should look. It was also super dirty, was missing things in the spray tan room that are normally there (wipes, towels, etc). I tried calling the location to ask if I could get a refund for one spray on my package and they didn't pick up ONCE in the five times I tried to call them over 5 days. Called Fullerton and they refunded me right away even though it wasn't their locations fault. Worth the drive to get away from this location! read more

REALLY? Really? I tried to get tan for a trip but the douche behind the counter sold me a $65 package because that wast "cheaper than doing a one-time tan." Then he insisted that I had to buy THEIR lotion, which was another $50. Their lotion, is lotion and you know what, it's a self-tanner. Dihydroxyacetone, also known as DHA, is the active "bronzer so you don't waste your time.", is reactive to flesh to make one's skin darker, so it's the same as an drug store self-tanner. read more

I went to a different LA tan in Lakeview and got an accurate description/point value in my account. Then I go to this one and she tells me I have no points left on my account. This chick is either strung out or a straight up liar. I counted myself what I had left and what bed I was able to use after purchasing a promo deal and they just magically disappeared. Also, its about a 50/50 toss up whether the bed is prepped or not. I went in the bed, waited for the timer to start the countdown before it automatically turns on, but it still said "0", as in she didn't set the bed. I knew this was going to happen because she was chit chatting with one of her friends. How freakin annoying is it that half the time I go tanning here, I get undressed, put on lotion, then have to put my clothes back on and tell the idiot to do her job? SEE ALL THE HORRIBLE REVIEWS? TAKE THAT AS A HINT! I have never written a bad review before in my life, and am not really the type of person to do so. But I feel it's necessary to warn other people before they are robbed by this store. I've moved a lot in the past, so I've been to many different tanning salons. Never have I had such a bad experience with other salons, or with any other business. The biggest mistake I made was allowing them to keep my debit information on record. DO NOT give them access to your bank account. I never have cash on me so this sounded fine when I signed up, but it's a trap. I was a member for less than a year, and had two major problems. Problem 1: When I decided to take a break from tanning, I went in to cancel my account. They told me I could freeze my account instead so that when I returned, I could just unfreeze it and continue tanning. I agreed to just having my account frozen instead of canceled since I was planning on coming back. I asked them to confirm that the following month would be the last time I was billed, and they said yes. Months passed and I finally decided to unfreeze my account and start tanning again. I walked in and spoke with the person at the desk, who told me I had a large amount of fees that I owed them. I asked what she was talking about since I hadn't been tanning for months! Apparently, when I froze my account they were still deducting money from my bank account every month (I think it was $2.99/mo or something). When you freeze your account here, they will still bill you every month but then you get that back as store credit when you return, or something along those lines. I never agreed to that. At first I didn't understand how my card was declined, but then I remembered I had changed my debit card. So now I owed the monthly fees for freezing my account and the card declined fees. I told her I never agreed to pay those fees, and that they told me I would not be billed. She said everyone signs a paper that informed us we would be billed. I asked her to see this paper I allegedly signed since I knew I never signed anything that stated such. She went back to get the paper and couldn't find it, of course. (I later signed a new one that did list the conditions of my account after all this was sorted.) This person I was dealing with was very nice and understanding. She made calls and was trying to get this resolved for me. When the manager came in, Tiffany I believe is her name (dark hair, dark skin), she told the girl to just have me pay half and they would waive the other half. I shouldn't have had to pay anything since I never agreed to pay while my account was frozen, nor did I sign a paper. But I said that was fine, and paid half. Problem 2: I went on some acne medication so I wasn't allowed to tan anymore. After a few weeks I made my way into the tanning salon to cancel my package. AGAIN, I had some magical fees! I asked what the fees were for. She said my card was declined. I asked when and she said it was declined the previous month. I told her that was impossible and asked her to check my card number against the one they were trying to bill. She said she couldn't because employees don't have access to see the card numbers, but assured me my card had went through smoothly every other time including this month. Again, I told her that was impossible because for the last few months I had at least $1000 in my bank account at all times. Her response was "maybe another transaction was trying to come out of your account, and it blocked us when we tried to bill you. I've seen that happen before." I asked if I could talk to management, and she said "I am the manager." Thinking back, I should have fought this solely for the principal. I should have left and gotten a bank statement to prove what she was saying was impossible. But at this point I was thinking whatever I'm sick of this, and told her I would just pay the $10 fee so I could just close my account and never have to deal with them again. I asked "and by closing my account, I will not be billed again, correct?" She confirmed I would not be billed again, unlike when my account was frozen. I almost asked for that in writing because I do not trust them. I would also like to note that I was very calm and polite during both of these situations. The person I was dealing with during my second problem is the same manager mentioned in problem 1. As I've said, I believe her name is Tiffany. During the second problem, she started to get an attitude with me after I asked if I could speak with management. This attitude was not needed since I was not trying to cause problems but simply resolve yet another injustice. Very unprofessional. I will never be returning here. I just wanted to tan, not to be taken advantage of twice in less than a year. read more

I honestly would not go to this salon if it wasn't so close to my house. The staff is always rude and normally on personal phone calls. They need to understand that the customers are the reason they have jobs, therefore they need to give good customer service. They act like they are doing you a favor by allowing you to tan there. I pay a monthly membership fee but normally upgrade every other visit. Not all the rooms are equipped with mirrors, which are helpful when getting dressed. If you want to go to LA Tan, try the one on Ashland north of Belmont. The staff is wonderful. I dread going into Halsted and normally leave in a bad mood. read more

Theft! I purchased a package with a certain amount of minutes for a specific reason. I only tan for certain occasions like before I go on vacation. So when I went in to tan today because I'm going on vacation next week I was told the package I bought was expired! What? I was never told when you spend money on a package you have a certain amount of time to use it before you loose it and your package you spent your money on really just becomes them stealing from you and not telling you about it when you buy it! This LA Tan location is an embarrassment to the brand. No towels in the rooms so make sure you ask first. There is usually leftover garbage from the previous tanner laying in the room, so not sure what cleaning means to this staff. I know they enjoy their personal phone calls and cigarettes. Although FDA guidelines recommend nose plugs for spray tanning, this location thinks they're optional and really not necessary so bring some cotton balls to stuff in your nose if you want to spray tan here....oh, and make sure you feel some dampness after the spray tan. The last time I went the system was clearly not hooked up properly (the new girl recently changed the solution but I don't think she did it right). When I complained they told me I didn't know what I was talking about (even though they could have just checked the system to see I spray tan there regularly). I was pale the next day with no visible tan - who was wrong? And do you think they have given me a tan back to my account - NO. They also told me my tanning dollars weren't expiring - what happened on the next visit immediately after that? My tanning dollars were gone...then they scam me and say if I buy a new package the dollars can go back into my account. I bought a new package...no reactivation of my tanning dollars. Have I been contacted by the manager about my complaint - NO. Stay far away from this location - go to any other LA Tan but this one. **I'm amending my review to add a star because they have reactivated my tanning dollars and given me a mystic back into my account. I appreciate the fact that it was resolved, I just hate that it had to get to an email to corporate and a negative Yelp review to resolve. Usually crowded on Tuesday nights, but I've never waited longer than 10 minutes. The staff is friendly and knowledgable minus the fact a few of them didn't inform me I had reward points to use and instead had to pay cash for upgrades... They won't try and sell you lotion unless you really need it. Beds are clean, there is always a towel in the room as well. It's definitely my go to tanning spot! read more

I'm a first time tanner, and the girl who was helping me was so funny and helpful, she set me up with the best type of lotion for my skin, and the best package that will fit my needs and my budget. She was extreemly cool and didnt mind all the questions i asked her, if you ever go to this location ask for amanda to help you and explain everything and shes really good at it. i tryed mystic tan for the first time and i was weary after reading the bad review about the mystic tanner, but the next 5 days i got so many compliments on how nice and even my tan was! i will tan at this location forever, I LOVE IT!!! read more

The only thing that draws me to this location is that it is three blocks from my house. This location is disgusting. From the outside it looks nearly abandoned and the inside is not much better. In the last two weeks there were two times that I arrived in the middle of the day to find the door locked! Though the hours are clearly posted, it seems that the employees are forgetting when they are to be opened or closed. Once I waited for 10 minutes on the curb and the guy who came back apologized- he was on his lunch break. (Im pretty sure they dont get lunch breaks). On top of that they almost NEVER have towels in the rooms and I am way to accustomed to seeing lotion-y hand prints all over the beds. I have even started bringing my own wet wipes to wipe down the beds before I lay in them. Is it really that hard to clean a bed properly?! Any company owner who takes pride in his business would be ashamed to see the nastiness that is this LA Tan location! read more
