My go to spot for takeout sushi during my lunch! Typically, I get a platter of Unagi nigiri or salmon nigiri. The portions are always very generous and the rice is seasoned well. Not too much salt or too much mirin. I love how quaint & homey the shop feels. They have hot foods, sushi rolls/nigiri, and a shelf with drinks/chips/candy. A few weeks ago, I stopped by to get a wedding gift for my coworker. I got her a sushi party tray because I show love through food! Admittedly, I didn't order ahead. I walked in and asked how long it would take to make a tray. The woman working there, I didn't catch her name, said to grab what I want from the takeout fridge and she will arrange it on the spot for me. So in less than 10 minutes, I arrived at the store, made my selection, and left the store with a roughly ~$80 customized sushi party tray! Of course, it's better to order ahead so you don't clear out their stock, but it was a very last minute idea and I'm glad they were willing to accommodate my request!

I was driving to the Bay to pick up my Bear (not a real Bear, but IYKYK haha) and felt like some quick sushi. Of course I check out Yelp and stumbled upon Kyoto. Perfect, it was in the way... sort of haha. Parking was the tricky part though. It's street parking, so anyone who is from the bay knows Parking is a pain. After a few rounds of driving, I eventually ended up with a parking spot right across the street from Kyoto! The shop is located right on the corner. It's pretty small. You take a few steps inside and you're already to the register, which is the end of the shop haha. To the left is the Sushi ready to go. To the right are some Japanese snacks. I went ahead and got their 8 piece Salmon nigiri and went to the register. The person working offered some soy sauce and chopsticks. I went ahead and paid and walked to my car to eat. The rice was a bit starchy and dense. But the size of the Salmon made up for that. It was nice thick slices. It wasn't too thin like other places around this price range. The nigiri overall was a bit above ok. I think if the rice didn't taste too starchy/old, it would be better. I wouldn't go out of my way for this, but was glad to get my salmon fix that day. If you're around the Solano area and can find parking quickly, stop by Kyoto for some Sushi and Japanese snacks!

My wife and I came here on a weekday to grab lunch. It's a small space with a lot of fresh rolls and other hot options. I was very impressed with the selection and how clean it was. There are a number of Japanese snacks on one side of the room, dozens of nice niche options for some added interest. The sushi options all looked fresh and high quality. We liked what we got, a spicy tuna roll, a tempura roll, a cali roll. Overall all the food was very good. And most rolls were between $7-$10, with some combo plates at $14. There really isn't much in the way of staff, just a cashier, but he was fast an friendly and offered plenty of soy sauce and napkins. TL;DR: Good quality cheap sushi.

It can be hard to find quality and affordable Japanese takeout, but Kyoto answered my prayers. I hopped off the 18 bus early to finally give this place a try. I got the California roll covered in fish roe & a tuna/avocado roll for under $20. Aside from the reasonable price point, the fish tasted fresh and the portion was sizable for a quick lunch. The service is pretty straightforward here where you pick your food, go to the counter, pay, and leave. No pleasantries which is fine by me. It's a takeout place so really casual, an open fridge with shelves of fresh sushi, some hot food options, and nowhere to sit so prepare to find somewhere to picnic with your findings. Will definitely visit again if I'm in the area

A nice hole in the wall with convenient grab-n-go sushi, snacks, and other assortments of foods. I personally come here for the sushi as it is fresh, fairly priced, and because the store has a homely feel to it. The owners are super sweet and you can definitely tell that the folks put a lot of love into their shop. My favorite cut is the yellow tail. It's very sweet, not overtly fishy, and has a great taste to it. With that, the salmon is very nice too. It packs a decent fishy punch to it. The tuna is also great in both the nigiri and tekka maki. The rice is a bit packed with vinegar but the texture is great. With that, the wasabi is also great. As a side note, they do not have extra packets of wasabi, only the ones included. Overall, definitely check this place out for a quick sushi fix, a nice afternoon picnic, or if you're just in the area!

Cute little Japanese shop that offers fresh sushi, teriyaki bowls and a wall full of Asian snacks. It's not a place I'd really going out of my way for but a good option when you're in the area and want something fast and easy. We grabbed three trays from the sushi section - eel and avocado, salmon and a combo of inari with futomaki. It's a 4 out of 5 on the flavors, but I did appreciate how filling their rolls were. We could barely finish half of it. I do like supporting mom and pop shops during this time so please check them out of you're on Solano Ave.!

Kyoto is a neighborhood spot that offers take out Japanese. The offerings are not elaborate in their sushi variety but if you're craving some sushi and are on a budget this place is great. I love sushi and sashimi, and I get cravings for it a lot so coming here helps me stretch my dollar a bit. I also tried a salmon fried rice and it was super good! They also have a bunch of Japanese snacks so if you're an adventurous snacker this would be a great place to shop. Take out only, takes card and street parking.

Solano Avenue always has some cute foodie gem that I happen to chance upon. Kyoto is no exception as my BF and I strolled down the block over the weekend. Luckily they were open during Covid times but with limited capacity. It turned out to be a smallish takeout Japanese spot with freshly made unagi-don, Salmon teriyaki bowls, a variety of maki rolls, specialty rolls, nigiri- it was beautiful. I spent a lot of time looking at each item- I wanted to buy them all- it didn't help that it was lunchtime and my eyes were bigger than my stomach. I ended up with a rainbow roll which had salmon and tuna on the outside and a California roll on the inside. What I liked about this roll was the bonito flakes, umami type sauce, and sesame seeds on the bottom. That elevated the roll's flavor and made my lunch more savory. I would highly recommend this place for a quick takeout lunch/dinner, which is pretty much what most people do nowadays. Next conquest is getting the unagi don and a variety of the other rolls with sake and hamachi.

I noticed this place for the first time today as I was on Solano. It's a small Asian store with grab and go sushi and bowls on the left hand side and a bunch of Asian snacks on the right. There is no seating in this place. I wasn't very hungry so I only picked up a beverage from their fridge. My drink (coffee in a can) was $2.00. Pros: - grab and go meals. Great if you want to pick up something quick -metered and street parking in front and on side of store Cons: -cash only. I'm not sure if it's because I only got a drink or if that is across the board?

** The following review reflects my takeout experience DURING the shelter-in-place order currently in effect. ** I knew if there is one spot on Solano Avenue that I knew would survive COVID-19, this be it. Even though I've walked by it dozens of times, I never bought anything here not because I didn't find it appetizing but simply because I'm not the sushi-to-go type. Well, until now since it's the only way I can have it now. I thought I'd surprise Jamie W. by getting some for dinner. There was barely any left by the time I perused. I got three items. This is one of my favorite sushi-to-go places. The place recently got redecorated/renovated and it looks nicer. The sushi rolls are sizable, tasty, and very fresh. I'm normally not a California roll that of girl but her Golden California Rolls are dripping with eggs, it's really heavenly. My other favorite is negihama maki. For 16 pieces (2 orders), it costs less than five dollars. You can order anything from the counter if the front is out and this place is cash and checks only. I love Kyoto and go there at least once a week, the lady is so nice too. The place also serves boba drinks and sells Japanese snacks for a somewhat inflated price. read more

Maybe I'm just not enough of a sushi snob. Considering the prices and the nice lady, I just can't wait to come back for more. ( I did in fact consider taking the bus from UCBerkeley to come down here for my second fix). As a general rule you can tell if something is fresh or not. Let rolls sit for more than a few hours and the rice on the outside becomes hard which even though I was there at the end of the day last time... the rice was not hard!! Yeah the place looks a bit... sparce which makes you think its kind of shady and wonder why its still in business, well, for good reasons: price, convience and yummy sushi. read more

The sushi just isn't as good as the sushi at whole foods or Berkeley bowl. I always get fooled into going here because it is convenient and seems authentic. Plus I don't think the owners are particularly friendly. But it all comes down to the sushi. Compared to grocery store sushi, Kyoto is only slightly better than Safeway, but that isn't saying much because this place specializes in sushi. I can't taste any flavor in the fish. The rice is made without the proper flavor for sushi and is densely packed. read more

By now if you read the below review trail, one knows ahead, yes you've been warned. This place is a little quirky, with credit card and service mood. Oh well. It's a take out, to-go, no muss no fuss place for very reasonably, above quality for what you pay, sushi, to-go, treats/drinks. It's not a sit down & be served place. The woman who runs it does so, solo. I don't go here to get smiley warm fuzzy service. I just go for the simple box of sushi or lunch. She's been in business in this exact location day after day for something like 13 years!!! For a reason. The food & prices are worth the 5 minutes of "just the facts" service. read more

I cannot bring myself to walk into this place anymore, though I used to love the sushi here, and it pains me. For a long, long time, I tolerated the very rude reception I received from the woman who runs the place. She would eye me suspiciously, speak tersely, literally glare at me when I walked up to the counter. I went in again after the first time, thinking that maybe she'd had a bad day, maybe she had BRF, maybe I shouldn't expect everyone in the world to be in a great mood all the time. But it got to the point where the rudeness ruined the food. The food literally began to taste bad because of the attitude with which is was sold. I don't know if there's something about me this woman doesn't like, if she's racist, if she's mean to everyone or just certain individuals. But it's over for me and Kyoto. I've moved on. read more

Can't beat it for the price! Sometimes I purchase from supermarkets for convenience but being that the price is even higher at these supermarkets, why wouldn't I come here especially since it not much further than those. The pieces are big. Mei is quiet but if exceptional. Be nice to her, she works soooo hard! read more

The owner is the nicest person who I ever met. She has opened this store for 16 years. She has the most reasonable price in this country. 5 dollars for a bowel of delicious homemade fish fired rice, can you believe it? Over 16 years, she never raise the price of her lovely products!!!!!Compare to the sushi restaurants and Japan restaurants in this town, this store has the cheapest price and the most delicious taste!!!!It probably only costs you 10 dollars to have a declious lunch or dinner. It is definitely the best store. By the way, she also sells candies from China and Japan. Those candies are wonderful!!! She also has a kind heart. Because when I asked her why don't you raise the price of the products, she said she just want to sever a delicious and convenient sushis and snacks to the neighbourhood. No doubts, it is the best place for you to get some sushi and foreign snacks. read more

Can't say enough. When I lived farther north, I would go out of my way to come here once a week for the fresh and affordable sushi. The lady is so nice that one time I was short on money by like three dollars and she just gave it to me. Another time she just gave me one of the hot dishes at the end of the night because she was going to just throw it away. read more

Kyoto is the place to go, if you have a hankering for delicious sushi at home. The fish is always fresh and the cuts are decent. Ordering over the phone is easy and pleasant. This is not a replacement for your favorite sushi restaurant, but it hits the spot if you want a more affordable at home alternative. I have been picking up sushi from here for the last 3 years and have always been happy with their quality and service. read more

Best sushi EVER!!! The proprietor does everything including making the sushi and she is very nice. The sushi comes with generous servings with big chunks of salmon. In most restaurants the chef gives us sushi with a very thin and small amount of fish, but at this restaurant you"ll get a thick and large fresh piece of salmon. At first we wanted to go to a sushi restaurant with very good reviews (4 and a 1/2) but it was closed so we came to this nearest take out restaurant instead. And it definitely did not disappoint. read more

I come here often for party platters that I order in advance. You can always find me here on Super Bowl Sunday, the NBA finals other game days. The quality is very good, the pieces are generous and the value can't be beat. The owner makes the platters to your own preferences so be prepared to tell her what you like and how many people you're serving. It's really hard to leave without grabbing more and more trays of food. read more

Absolutely delicious!!! I love sushi and here it is an affordable price! Their ingredients are very fresh (from what I know). The sushi is just perfect! The only thing that bothers me is ordering on the phone. The lady owning the place is hard to understand on the phone.... Yet somehow every single time we order, we pick it up and it is perfect! Extremely high quality at very reasonable prices, this place is a long-time neighborhood gem. Everything is fresh, delicious, with the extra bonus of feeling your sushi is being homemade for you by mom. It is - the lady who owns it and who you will meet makes absolutely everything herself and will also do special orders on the spot. Five stars for Kyoto! read more

I really like the lady who runs this place (who also makes the sushi). The sushi is good quality and you get a lot for the price. It's comparable to other more expensive sushi places. It's an all take out place. Call at least an hour in advance for big orders. If you're not sure what to get she'll help you set up your platter. read more

This adorable shop in the middle of Solano offers freshly made take-out sushi. If you are a sushi lover like me, the idea of affordable and quick sushi is a dream, not to mention packaged the same day and just as yummy as restaurant fare. Last Halloween, my mother and I took a stroll and decided to pop in for a quick bite. Craving something healthy and light before the annual sugar/booze binge, Kyoto Sushi offered many different kinds of packaged sushi, including seaweed salad, tamago, and futomaki. Lining the walls are shelves stacked with exotic snacks, sweets and drinks. As the icing on the cake, the kind kimono-clad woman behind the counter stuffed each of our hands full of Halloween candy as we left. All in all, Kyoto Sushi is my new favorite market. read more

So, plan accordingly. It's a very unassuming space located in a food hall, they have options for to go trays near the entrance if you can't be seated. Don't leave here without some food to be had because everything was exceptional here, from fatty tuna, yellowtail (our favorite), to uni and chirashi/unagi bowls. The rainbow roll exceeded my expectations. The crab filling inside the rainbow roll was the standout. It makes the roll taste authentic. Try it and tell me it's not different. I have been eating at Kyoto for years. The sushi is amazing. I usually get two orders of salmon rolls, two orders of tuna rolls and the california roll. This definitely isn't the best place to get california rolls, but for $3.99, it is worth the price ten times over. Their tuna and salmon rolls are delicious. Through the years I'm sure I've tried everything they have to offer, and I have never found something I don't like. For 30 pieces of sushi, I pay $14.95, which is a great deal. The woman who works there is very nice. If she is out of something, she will make it for you right there on the spot. Although they have a two-way mirror, you can still barely see her taking fresh fish and chopping it for you right then and there. The food is fresh, delicious and satiating. I can and would reccomend this to everyone I know. The quality of the food is as good as Sushi 29 right up the street, for half the price. Yum. read more

What you see is what you get! So I run around all day long with work or my kid. What i love love LOVE about Kyoto is fresh food ready to go fast, cheap and yummy. its a great quick lunch on the run or dinner to go home. I can grab a salmon bento box with rice or Sushi. I have always had perfectly great service here. This is my regular take out place. The food is there READY TO GO- NO WAITING! I can almost always find parking within a block and I am off. I have also ordered a party platter or two ahead of time for guest- Full platter for $30 and its a fun dinner party surprise. I only wish there were more places like this where i don't have to get stuck looking for longer parking or dealing with waiting on people or lines! read more

This is a sushi take-out place, not a restaurant. We like it, and we stop in once or twice a week. You'll find chow mein, pot stickers, seaweed salad, bento boxes with salmon and rice, fish sushi of various kinds, inari, carrot sushi (yum!), cucumber sushi, California roll, hot miso, Japanese candies and other snacks, and lots of other stuff. They make large party packs to your specification if people are coming over. There's nothing surprising here, but the quality seems high and the woman who runs the place is usually very friendly. read more

I can't tell you how amazing the food is at this sushi to go. The sweet rice pockets are some of the best that I've had in my life and all the sushi's that we tried very amazing as a great selection of little candy treats which of course I got plenty of Davis fast everything was fresh and the staff could not have been friendlier I was so good that I wasn't paying attention and I accidentally ate the wasabi. read more

I love this place! I have been eating here since i was a child. I come here all the time and the food is always delicious. The California roll with fish eggs is my favorite. I would also recommend the nigiri because it is always made fresh. The price is very affordable and the store owner is extremely kind. She has a very positive attitude to her customers. I rarely reverse a review, but I decided to give Kyoto another chance since it's a local restaurant. I'm glad I did because my last three visits have been very pleasant. I had no issues with the food previously, but the customer service was lacking. However, it has since improved, and I now feel comfortable giving Kyoto the rating it deserves. BB read more
