For me, a decent place to stop in if you're in a hurry. It's strictly take-out, and nearly everything is out of their little refrigerated display. The sushi quality is pretty OK. The fish seems fresh and the nigiri cuts are decent. I find the California rolls and most anything tuna or salmon-based agreeable there, and of course, the more tobiko the better. Overall, though, it's not the sort of place that comes to mind when I crave sushi. One tip for any place that has unagi in its bento fridge... don't do it! I've never been pleased with the texture of cold unagi. It's always too rubbery and forces one to overchew and therefore overthink it, and that just ain't the sushi experience for me! read more

I came to Kyoto to grab a quick to-go lunch while working in the neighborhood. The store is very convenient: a wall of pre-made sushi, boxed up and ready to go! The other main wall of the store sells non-perishable Asian snacks. Maybe the fact that 50% of the space is devoted to highly processed food should have tipped me off, but I was surprised by the low quality of the food. I got a box of avocado sushi, which was alright but a little on the slimy side, and a seaweed salad, which I couldn't finish despite its unimposing 4-ounce size. The seaweed was not only fairly swimming in strong vinegary sweet dressing, it was dyed. Those were some unnatural greens and they weren't pretty. The sesame seeds had turned an alarming chartreuse from the contact. Between the overpowering dressing and the food coloring, I neither could finish the salad nor wanted to. read more

I got the salmon avocado roll. The price is hard to beat especially on a college student budget. Only $5! Who can say no to cheap sushi? I wasn't very impressed with the salmon inside. It tasted mushy, unappetizing, and not fresh. I've had Kyoto's salmon roll several times and usually the salmon comes in big chunks. But this time, it seemed like they just put leftover scraps into the roll they needed to get rid of and the texture threw me off. Kyoto sells decent quality sushi for a fairly cheap price. I come here a lot with my friends but I wouldn't day it's the best sushi in the area. Would recommend for anyone looking for quick, cheap, but decent quality sushi. However, if you are someone who likes good customer service, ya better hold ur horses cuz the lady who works there as a cashier has never smiled in her life. I don't have the best stomach and I can eat this all day. The lady is like the soup nazi attitude but it brings character to the place. She's not mean just very straight forward. Japenese food tend to be very expensive. This place - not so much, you might actually spend less than $10 for lunch there, depending how much you wamt to eat. I spend $12 for: - unagi sushi (those with sesame seed) - 4 large vegetarian rolls - 1 rice cake. Everything was amazing, yes this is Japanese quality. I can't have such a nice feeling in the stomach very often, I'm glad I stopped by. If you want something Japanese real quick and cheap, this place is a way to go. read more

I have driven past this place before, years ago tried it, but it never left an impression good or bad or otherwise. was in the area today and liked the fact that they are a one-trick pony in that, they are small and all they do is Sushi---they have also been doing it for a long time scanned the well stocked frige area and things looked great---lots of fat in the salmon nigiri, good colour to the tuna, texture of the hamachi looked great------i even grabbed a catering menu since I was so hopefull I loaded up, 2 hamachi maki's, 1 salmon maki, 1 large nigiri combo with salmon, tuna, hamachi.----total tab $18 and change---- found the sushi, Amazing, but Amazing not in a good way. All I could say to myself is just how can each nigiri piece look so good, but pretty much be tasteless?---the maki rolls, the rice was too sour, so I didn't like them either. won't be returning read more

I HEART Kyoto!! Its the perfect place to pick up some fresh, delicious, & affordable sashimi and other japanese yummies! My Daughter especially loves their Gyozas. Every time we come in the woman who takes our order is very direct and some would say abrupt. She never smiles or greets us but I know its not personal because she always sneaks in a little extra complimentary treat for my Daughter. I love her!! Cucumber Roll and Spicy Tuna Roll is my regular order, both are delicious. Their raw fish always tastes fresh. They also have a wall of various Japanese and Asian snacks, and a soda fridge with both American and Asian drinks. The staff are very nice. We didn't go for anything fancy - just some simple California roll, Fuki sushi and an avocado roll. The price is fair and of course, cheaper than sit-down sushi place nearby. It's great value. The store offers a wide variety of take out sushi and bento boxes on one-side and the other side is devoted to Japanese snacks. Yes, they are brightly packaged, overly processed, but they are fun. Just like pop rock candies, one doesn't pour them down the throat for their nutritional value. Will definitely return when we need a quick sushi fix or a light meal. read more

It may not be quite the quality of a fancier sushi shop like Akemi, however, it is only SLIGHTLY less, for the same price as store-made sushi at Andronicos or Safeway (WAY BETTER QUALITY). We stopped in to take out sushi. I wanted to order a party platter, but it takes an hour and half to make it, so we grabbed 5 packages and 4 drinks for $44. The owner threw in an extra pack of CA rolls, which was really nice of her. (We brought a picnic blanket and walked a block down the street to the elementary school and ate on the lawn.) The food was fresh and delicious. We got an inari/veggie/CA roll combo, spicy tuna roll, CA roll with roe, unagi and shrimp tempura (and the free CA roll). Seriously all were the right temperature, the rice wasn't mushy, had good flavor. The ratio of fish to rice was good. I am also a fan of the white finger over pink ginger, so that was a win for me! Also tried the Hawaiian Tropic lychee green tea - it was perfect I thought. Not too sweet, slight lychee taste. Would definitely return. Only warning, Be prepared to pay in cash. read more

Fish melts like butter, sushi rice is ACTUALLY seasoned sushi rice (not just plain rice like they do at 99 Ranch), and sushi prices are comparable to or lower than Tokyo Fish Market. And if I were to compare the take out sushi from Kyoto in comparison to Tokyo Fish Market? No comparison: Kyoto's tastes better. The sushi rice at Tokyo Fish Market tastes just off--too sweet or something. Anyone who's watched "Jiro Dreams of Sushi" knows what I'm talking about when I say that the rice is what makes or breaks the sushi. We had the unagi bowl too, which was good. But really, you go for the sushi. We were spoiled by living in Hawaii for years and having access to easy, affordable, take-out sushi. I work on Solano so I've tried it all, but I can always count on Kyoto. I catch myself eating here 3 or 4 times a week, some weeks. Everything is made that morning and tastes like something I would normally have to wait at a table and pay twice as much for; but instead it fits my small lunch break. I've probably tried everything in the store. Twice. The nigiri cuts and the hamachi rolls are great; definitely my go-to. Everyone I've meet there has been nothing but polite and accommodating and the prices are always just right. I really can't say enough good things about Kyoto. This place 100% gave me the WORST service and food poisoning of my life! I've been sick since Saturday night!!! This is my first yelp review ever I literally made an account just for this sushi place! The sushi is kept on an open refrigerated shelf that is barley cold and when the cashier gave me my change rather than handing it to me she simply dropped in a pile on the counter for me to pick up! Very nice! Also! You don't even see them make the sushi! It's all behind a closed door down a dingy hall way! I will NEVER step within a 50 mile radius of this establishment! I really enjoy the big portions and that they regularly have salmon nigiri packs of eight for $9. Not usually but today there was WAY too much vinegar in the rice and since this is the first time in the dozen times I have eaten here I haven't docked their rating for it. I asked the cashier where they purchased their fish from and he said they get a delivery from some business in San Francisco but he wasn't sure of the name. I was so disappointed and felt tricked by the other Yelp reviews. This is the worst sushi I've ever had. I took one bite of the unagi and couldn't even swallow it. It was rubbery and tasted fake. The rice was soaked in vinegar and had a weird texture. It was not the traditional rolled rice, but the ones they cut into blocks that are pre-made. Plenty of Asian business owners smile, make eye contact & are pleasant. This lady is an exception. Knowing that fact...i have gotten over expecting any pleasantries from her. It's a grab & go place, so i walk in grab, pay & go. I mirror the lady by not really smiling or talking either... It's better that way. No expectations from either party. The sushi isn't mind-blowing... It's simple & decent. I don't do the sashimis, i usually come in here with my kids so we order the California, tempura, spicy tuna rolls. You'll find chow mein, pot stickers, seaweed salad, bento boxes with salmon and rice, fish sushi of various kinds, inari, carrot sushi (yum!), cucumber sushi, California roll, hot miso, Japanese candies and other snacks, and lots of other stuff.
