I only go here because it's 24 hours, and strangely enough I always need my drugs at the most…read moreinconvenient times! I have been a slave to this particular Walgreens for about 9 years now. As with any retail business, employees come and go rather quickly. That is, except for the elderly lady at the front check out. She's been there for 10 years, she told me so. It's completely hit or miss with customer service. Sometimes they are quick, other times you want to lay down and take a nap. However............ At approximately 9 pm every night, things start to get cray cray up in here. All the teenagers with lengthy juvenile records descend upon the place. I would describe it as "hoards" of unruly, thieving teenagers. A handful of them distract staff, while the others steal as much as they can. All this time I've managed to avoid them, except for once. That was when I made the unfortunate mistake of choosing the wrong aisle to walk down. I walked past a teenage female, as I did, I looked in the opposite direction as not to attract any unwanted attention. Yeah, that didn't work. She bellowed out at me "hey you white cracka, what the F--k you lookin' at? I will beat yo ass!" Bewildered, I kept walking and did not respond. Let me break it down for ya. People don't look at me and think "there is a dangerous beeotch that I need to take down." They look at me and say "there is a frumpy, midwest mom. Hide the powdered doughnuts." Maybe I'm just flattering myself, maybe she was talking to someone else, (not that I could see) and maybe I nearly got jacked. Either way, I don't actually go in the store after 9 pm anymore unless I want to live dangerously. That being said, I still need my drugs! Glorious drugs! So instead I sit in the drive thru for 30 minutes with all the other people who need scripts but don't want to chance going inside.

I am absolutely stunned by how I was treated at the Walgreens pharmacy drive-through on Davison…read moreDrive tonight. It was approximately 10 PM. I had just finished a 13-hour workday and was trying to pick up an essential medication for my child that should have been ready yesterday. He needs this medication tonight in order to function at school tomorrow. I was told that the prescription was not ready. I understood that things can get backed up, and I simply asked the pharmacist for an estimate of when it might be ready so I would know whether to wait nearby or come back through the drive-through. He refused to give me even an approximate timeframe and told me I needed to leave the pharmacy line. There was no one behind me, so I said, "Sir, there's no one behind me. Can you please just give me an idea of when I should come back around?" I was then told to stop talking, and the pharmacist threatened to call the police. I cannot adequately express how upsetting and bewildering this interaction was. I wasn't demanding that the prescription be filled immediately. I wasn't asking to cut ahead of anyone. I was simply a tired parent trying to determine when I could obtain my child's medication so I could get him what he needed and finally go home. I am also an experienced emergency medicine and urgent care provider. I understand how stressful healthcare can be. I understand understaffing, difficult shifts, competing priorities, and frustrated patients. I have tremendous respect for pharmacists and pharmacy staff and the pressures they work under. But none of those pressures justify speaking to a patient or parent this way. What concerns me most is this: if I--a healthcare professional who understands the system and is comfortable advocating for my child--was spoken to this way simply for asking when his medication might be ready, how are patients who are elderly, frightened, medically vulnerable, or uncomfortable advocating for themselves being treated? Being told to "stop talking" and threatened with police involvement for asking a reasonable question about my child's prescription was completely unacceptable. Walgreens leadership should review this interaction. Patients deserve basic dignity and respectful communication, even on busy and difficult nights.
