Overall: the food is good, well prepared with generous portions. I had the Cheeseburger Meatloaf. And the German Bratwurst. The meatloaf was a bit bland and the texture was unlike any meatloaf I've ever had. Not necessary bad, just to soft and with very little flavor. The Brat was overly spiced with a spice I was very familiar with. My wife liked, but I've Brat in Germany and it unlike this. Good, just very different. Good Caesar Salad. Great beer. Great staff‼. One of the better restaurants in Kutztown, it's worth a visit just for those big soft pretzels and lovely mustard & cheese appetizer. Their salads, pizzas and burgers are pretty good as well. They do make their own specialty brew's and pretzel rolls for the burgers. The decor is nice, relatively modern with big copper brewing tanks in the main dining room enclosed in glass. I have had a few bad experiences here (not enough to keep me away) and I remember when the pretzels came with cheese (instead of the cheese being extra) and the days when dinner came with some sort of varietal bread every day (carrot muffins/whole grain/sourdough) and a variety of butter as well. But it's still very very good and one of my favorite spots in town. Prices are reasonable and the meny has a nice variety, even some vegetarian dishes and seafood. read more

I go to this place virtually EVERY TIME I am in Kutztown, and have yet to be disappointed. The Golden Avalanche Brewery beer is not my favorite, but the food makes up for it. Everytime I have come here I have tried something new and always am pleased. This past visit I tried the sauerkraut and sausage platter and it was wonderful. I also enjoy the corn fritters as an appetizer. It can be VERY packed at times, but is definitely an enjoyable experience that anyone in Kutztown should try at least once. read more

This is one of my favorite spots for lunch dates with the girls or dinner with friends. So many awesome specials and great normal menu variety. My only complaint is that they need to bring back Dutch fries as a side. I don't care for any of the French fry choices that they decided to switch to. My normal go to is either the tuna salad (it's an actual salad) and the turkey melt on a pretzel roll. read more

I remember this building when it was an old-timey hardware and variety store called Fenstermachers, with wood floors that creaked as you walked along. Now there is brewery equipment in the front that results in a decent selection of beers, though not edgy choices. In the fall, the pumpkin ale is nice, but light. The wine is from the local Vynecrest winery, and my pear-y Chardonnay was perfectly fine. Nothing special on the food menu EXCEPT the fluffy soft giant pretzels, fresh baked with a delicious creamy mustard. It's worth going here for these along, and they are quite good with a beer. The place is huge and nicely renovated with an open feel, plenty of brick, cute booths, a parking lot in the back, and different areas for hanging out. It is probably the nicest restaurant in a town where there are few upscale offerings (nothing against the town, but it is geared toward college students). read more

The Kutztown Tavern is an awesome place to eat at. They have terrific food. Some examples are their crafted burgers, pizzas, and sandwiches. The food is a bit expensive for the area but you are paying for quality. The atmosphere of the restaurant is pretty trendy. The fact that the place is a microbrewery on main street kutztown has a lot to do with it. Speaking of beer, their craft beers are excellent. The waiters and waitresses are knowledgeable about each beer and are more than willing to help you decided which one you want. The restaurant is also very clean. The food is actually pretty good here, but when it's busy you can't hear yourself think it is so loud. Also, they stopped giving out bread with your meal, they had amazing bread! Not a good experience. Hostess sat us in a corner table and we sat there 15 minutes with no one coming over. I know it was not full and when I went up to the bar to see if we could give them an order there was no one there. Sadly we walked out and will not go back. I have had a number of bad experiences with the serving staff and the food is nothing special. If you do decide to eat here, try the soft pretzels with stone ground mustard. There are a lot of reason to eat at the Kutztown Tavern, but unfortunately the food isn't the main one. This isn't to say the food is bad. The Tavern offers a good selection of American cuisine that will surely satisfy everyone in your dinner party. However, while the Tavern food is good, it's not great and is comparatively more expensive than other restaurants in the area. As one of my colleagues likes to say, "The Tavern serves Pennsylvania food at New York City prices." For those willing to spend the extra money, the Tavern offers a great dining atmosphere, especially in Kutztown. In a town populated by college eateries (cheap, greasy food and dirty establishments), the high prices keep most of the students out of the Tavern. The Tavern has its own microbrewery so there's a great selection of beers on tap. Furthermore, the Tavern has a spacious layout and is well maintained. I've been here many times and love it! First off, it's a beautiful, rustic-looking sort of building on the inside -- makes you feel like you should be more dressed up once you're inside, but then you look around and mostly everyone is wearing casual attire. The food is great and moderately priced. As a vegetarian, I can only vouch for their selection in that area, but I've had nothing but good experiences. I especially like the pretzel pizzas -- very unique pizzas made out of pretzel dough. And I'll second/third the others on the soft pretzels with mustard appetizer. Delicious! I haven't been there in a while and I'm suprised to hear that they don't serve the different varieties of bread with their meals anymore. What a shame! House made BBQ. House brined corned beef. This place is a hidden gem in Kutztown, far and away. I really enjoyed the corned beef special with house pickled red cabbage. Burt end Mac and cheese is always a treat. The house made apple butter BBQ sauce goes great with just about anything. I would drink it out of an old shoe if it was socially acceptable. Duck tacos are very rich and delicious. I highly recommend this place for a beer and a bite. Pitmaster and head chef Zack takes a lot of pride in the food he turns out and it shows. Our group of seven ate dinner here; for one of our party and me, it was our first visit. Now I know why the other five wanted to come back. It looks like a tiny little place when driving by, but it's actually quite large, clean, and nicely decorated. Five stars to the staff, all of whom were very friendly and efficient. We ordered some appetizers to share, and there wasn't one thing that wasn't good. We shared some sampler platters, which included mozzarella sticks, broccoli-cheese bites, buffalo chicken, and potato puffs. We also ordered mini corn fritters served with honey for dipping--yeah, we're going to have THAT again! Most of us ordered burgers, which were very good. They were flavorful and were cooked to order. As an onion hater, I'm always happy when a restaurant actually holds the onion when I ask them to. It's that attention to detail that I like. There's a large selection of burger toppings, so you can build any burger you like. One member of our party put a good dent in her personal pizza before giving up and getting a to-go box. A very pleasant surprise. After stopping at the Rodale plant sale, went into Kutztown for lunch. Loved the tavern's interior with the industrial look and large copper beer vats, Had a blueberry beer, just to see if it was totally crazy. Actually was quite tasty. Faint whiff of fruit with a beer taste. Lunch was good too. My bellybuster fish was just as the name says, and my wife's open faced sandwich on a pretzel roll was fine. The server was cheerful, helpful, and efficient. Worth a return visit next time we're in the area. One note to management. You charged $3.50 to substitute fries instead of chips for my wife's order. The Kutztown Tavern is a pretty great place! It has a very nice atmosphere. I Often stop in here for drinks w/ friends before heading out elsewhere. Pretty decent list of craft beers, which are very good for the most part. I also believe there is live music on Saturday nights. I really only ate here once with a friend. I ordered a burger and fries which was very delicious. My friend also enjoyed her meal (I forget exactly what she ordered). The menu may be slightly lackluster (and slightly pricey) but I greatly enjoyed my meal. Overall, the tavern is a great place to bring a few friends or a date for some drinks and a meal. Trying to be high-end, but really somewhere I the middle. No doubt this is a "nice" restaurant, but it misses the mark on a lot of things. The food is expensive! And for some dishes rightly-so, but I've definitely felt ripped off several times. Loses a star for the pricing. The service is mostly atrocious. Waitresses with no personality. Mistakes happen frequently and their methods of fixing them isn't great. I have waited incredible amounts of time for both service and food. Loses the other star here. Parking can be complete crap. A few positives: 1) It's a microbrew, so there's lots of good beer on hand. 2) Easily accommodates large parties, which isn't common in this town. 3) Burgers are some of the best in town. 4) The crab dip is amazing. 5) Food is good - if you can afford it. read more

Ate here on a Sunday afternoon on a recommendation from a friend. Atmosphere: inside of this establishment is a huge bar with a few tables throughout. If you come here you will most likely sit at the bar if it is crowded. The lighting is ok, I would say it isn't too bright or too dark. I sat at a table by the window. The table itself was heavy and thick, as were the high chairs. The table, chairs, and floor were all very clean. There is also a pool table, dart table, and a few TV's scattered about. I could see this being a good hangout for both adults and the younger, college crowd. Menu: menu comprises of mostly American BBQ choices; pulled pork, pulled chicken, beef brisket. All (as I am told) smoked on sight. They also have several BBQ sauce options which you can pair with the entree of your choice. The menu isn't huge, however it appeared that most of the selections were quality. Works for me. Beer: worth mentioning here (as I like craft beer), they have a legitimate beer menu, with a ton of rotating cans and bottles. One of the TV's posts the beer menu exclusively, so that in itself strikes me that the owners take beer seriously. You could come here for the beer only and be satisfied. Prices for each beer seemed reasonable as well. I have the impression the owners know the difference between a good and bad beer. Service: wasn't bad. It was fairly empty so not sure how it is when busy. No complaints here. Food was delivered hot and within a reasonable amount of time. Food was delivered on paper receptacles and plastic ware, not a huge fan of that but I know a few BBQ joints that serve it that way. Irish China baby. Food: I ordered a brisket sandwich with spicy BBQ sauce. Brisket had a good smoke ring on it and wasn't too dry. Really great flavor. Spicy BBQ sauce had a great back end heat to it that wasn't overpowering. Served with kettle cooked chips, and huge dill pickle (had a good crunch to it). We came as a family, 9 people and the service friendly and accommodating! The ambience was pretty good with all the brew tanks in full view. Good food. BUT I have a big problem with their seating arrangements. I have been in this restaurant about 5 times. 3 with my boyfriend/friends, 2 with family + boyfriend. CAN I BOLD THIS!!?? Stopped here for dinner with a couple friends. Three stars on the food and four for the beer selection. At first, the smell of the hops was overwhelming - but you get used to it as the night goes on. Had a Donner Weiss - I would definitely recommend if you are a hoegarden fan. Even better! We split three meals to try each. The burger with onions and Swiss won. The flavor was there without being greasy. The buffalo chicken sandwich with bacon was good too. All the ingredients went together well. Last and certainly least was the Tuscan salad. Kutztown Tavern has improved big time since I last wrote. I'm not a beer aficionado but I do like good food. I rarely eat meat, but when I'm feeling carnivorous I love their brisket or flat iron steak ciabatta sandwiches.
