I cannot say enough positive things about our interactions with Paul Deutsch of Kurk Homes. My wife and I first met Paul when we toured the Kurk model home in New Braunfels. We were doing research on building our own custom home and he was very thorough in giving us a tour of the home and explaining the possibilities. Overall a solid experience with Kurk Homes. We moved from San Antonio to Blanco and were attracted to the balance of product quality, reasonable price point, and the extensive warranty coverage Kurk had to offer. Paul was our foot in the door and he was able to give us a thorough explanation of what Kurk could provide and answered all of our questions, even walking us through existing Kurk Homes in the area in various building stages. The experience with the architect, Steven, was easy - he was technically knowledgeable and responsive and produced a great blueprint, though he never visited our property or asked for photos which we thought may have been valuable at the time for additional context. The interior/exterior selection crew, Jeffrey and Madalyn, were phenomenal - they were very responsive and knowledgeable, providing recommendations along the way. They were easy to work with, helping us navigate design selections and ultimately making us feel comfortable with our choices. Most of the bumps we had were largely during the build process, which was to be expected. We tried to plan for contingencies as much as possible prior to building, but as first time home-builders there were plenty of things we learned the hard way. Our PM, Misael, replaced our initial PM due to unforeseen circumstances and there were periodic lapses in communication with the front office for the first 8 months or so during excavation and clearing (which we elected to pursue ourselves at Kurk's recommendation to save some $$ - in retrospect, we should've allowed Kurk to handle the entire process). We knew we needed approval from Kurk's structural engineers to start building but weren't able to work directly with them along the way to ensure we were following their protocols. Strangely, while the PM visited the property a handful of times during excavation and clearing, we actually spent more $$ at the end of the day to gain engineer approval for building. Once we broke ground Misael was very communicative throughout the rest of the build. He asked plenty of clarifying questions and saved us headaches more than a few times when there were discrepancies between the selection sheets and the design plan (and there were several) with the occasional hiccups along the way, such as our well house initially covering the access hatch to our water storage tank. Overall we were able to work through most of the sticking points without issue. The best advice I'd give to those building a custom home for the first time is make sure you know someone(s) in residential construction that can guide you so you know what to expect and identify areas to pay attention to. Sometimes you don't know what you don't know and having a more experienced professional be a sounding board can be helpful. Misael did a great job for his role and could be leaned upon for clarification but in retrospect a second opinion would have been invaluable. Ultimately, we are happy with our home, appreciate the ease of working with the Kurk specialists, and can live with the minor things that can be remedied over time. read more

It took over two weeks to get a response, when the other two Custom Home Builders took less than a week. I emailed and within a minute I was told they came up with $425 a square foot. The gallery of homes they build are in the range of 200-250 a square foot. Sounds like they want to sell fewer homes a year and make an extremely large profit margin. While our house building took far longer than expected & there were some glitches along the way, Zach Patterson was a great help throughout the process. After months of researching those who build in the Texas hill country, we decided on Kurk Homes with the help of Paul in the New Braunfels office. One thing we observed from the start was the involvement and professionalism of co-owner, Chris McGinley. Along with other prospective clients, we were able meet him at one of his "Hard Hat Home Tours" where we saw the quality being built into that home. After signing a contract, Lisa, the pre-construction coordinator, provided a written list of initial steps which was quite helpful. Once activity started at the site, the Construction Manager, Larry, emailed an update every weekend detailing that week's progress. Upon Larry's retirement, Lorenzo took the role of Construction Manager, and continued the updates. Someone was always available to answer questions and provide help in a timely manner. We saw Lorenzo overcome many challenges toward the end of the project, always with a smile (behind his mask!), a helpful solution, and willing support from Cole. It is obvious that the McGinley family has taken care to hire staff with an extremely positive attitude and high degree of competence. We loved having Kurk Homes as our builder. They built our custom home exactly as we wanted it with even a couple of bonus surprises along the way!! We were torn about our house placement as we were pretty sure we would have to cut down a large oak to fit the house in between the rest of the trees. Somehow they managed to get the house placement just right so that we are surrounded by all the beautiful oak trees without sacrificing them! We received weekly updates during the entire build process so we knew exactly what had taken place that week and what was scheduled next. I'm a retired Chief Warrant Officer with the US Navy. I say this because, if this is how Kurk Homes treats retired Navy, imagine what they'd do to all others! Latest update: Kurk Homes now states t(26 Sep 16) hat we're in"breach of contract" as of 6 Nov 15 because we moved into the home on that date. The construction manager advised us on 6 Nov 15 that it was okay to move in and start living in the home as there were only a few items on a list to fix/repair. Kurk Homes also stated that we were being charged "interest" on money for the final draw. Note, bank withheld final draw due to completion issues until 6 Feb 16. It took a Better Business Bureau Complaint to get Kurk Homes to start the needed fixes and repairs (started in late Dec 15, but not yet completed as of 26 Sep 16). As I've stated numerous times on Yelp - DO NOT USE KURK HOMES period. read more

We have been through the building process four times and all with different builders. The thing I learned is: building a house is stressful and normally not a smooth process. It is just part of the business. You have so many variables to deal with; contractors, suppliers, construction managers, designers, architects, banks, government, weather etc. Things are bound to go wrong. The one thing that really helps is an exceptional construction manager. If you can get one, it will make a world of difference. Unfortunately for us, we started our Kurk home with a construction manager that wasn't so great. That all changed when he left and we were able to finish our house with Eli. Eli is an exceptional construction manager. He went above and beyond to make things right and turn things around. He kept us informed at all times and made sure things were getting done. He did everything he could to make us happy and it worked. In the end, we have a beautiful home that we love. Thanks again to Eli for all his hard work to make sure we had a good experience. We moved from The Woodlands to New Braunfels and selected Kurk Homes to build our custom home based on our visits to their model home in Huntsville and our interactions with Melanie and staff at their home office in Magnolia. Paul, the Hill Country sales manager gave us solid advice in our selections and upgrades and was clear and concise in explaining what to expect during the build process, how long the build should take and how any changes we wanted to make during the building process would be handled. Stephen then took the pictures, sketches, crude drawings, etc. that we provided him with and, through back-and-forth communication, was able to create construction drawings that met all of our requirements.  Not a small task in light of the current situation where face to face communication can be limited! The construction manager for our build was Lorenzo and we feel truly blessed that he was in charge of building our home.  Lorenzo is a terrific communicator, is wise beyond his years in construction details and is well respected among all of the sub-contractors on our project.  He provided us a weekly update detailing the work that had taken place and the work that was scheduled which was very beneficial in keeping us appraised of where we were in regards to our build schedule.  Outstanding job! My family is blessed to own a ranch in Llano, Texas, near Enchanted Rock. The property has been in the Moss family name since the battle of San Jacinto. When we go to work cattle on the property, we've stayed in town at my grandfather's house. It has long been a dream of mine to build a house on the ranch that would allow for the family to spend more time together while we are on our ranch trips. We knew we wanted the house to be quality, maintenance free, comfortable, and designed to our needs. Using the income from the cattle as our primary source of payment, we decided to build the house in phases over 4 or 5 years. Chris McGinley understood my desire to do this and has been extremely accommodating. Steven Byrne has been awesome to work with on the design front too. We went from a picture that I sketched to a design that the whole family has agreed will suit us just right. Check out my 5 year old nephew's idea of a rope ladder from the second story patio! Larry Rice was there for the foundation pour, and took extra precautions to protect our pipes etc. since the foundation may sit for a year or two before we get to continue with the project. Chris mentioned at the beginning of this project, that once that foundation is poured, it's going to be hard to wait for the next phases, and he's correct. We've already set up a foldable table on the "back porch" for a pizza dinner, as the family envisioned one day gathering under the fan made from the old windmill, looking out on the cattle tank and the mountains in the background. We LOVE LOVE LOVE our home built in Magnolia, Texas by Kurk Homes. DID I MENTION WE LOVE IT? From day one, Kurk Homes was absolutely wonderful to work with and the whole building process was fun, honest, exciting and always handled on the utmost professional level. Kurk Homes is extremely affordable yet they treated us as if we were their only customer and as if we were building a million dollar home. They cared about us and made us feel as if we were important to them. They were building SEVERAL other homes at the same time, yet that didn't impact us negatively at all. Kurk Homes, especially Chris and Chuck, tended to our EVERY need. All questions, concerns, phone calls and emails (there were A LOT) were quickly addressed without any delays or miscommunications. The daily communication was outstanding. We were amazed at the attentiveness we received. And my memories of building are all happy. Building process was fun, positive and always satisfying. -- not stressful like people say building custom is. Our home is beautiful.....from the bricks to the stone to the Kent Moore cabinetry and millwork. The Kurk Homes house plan we modified just to fit our family was a collaborative effort with us and their designer. The designer, J, (bless his patient heart) meticulously made every little change to the plans that we wanted and then changed some back. And forth. And back. And yet again. It was hard to work with us I imagine but he kept on making changes till we were positive of the plan. And to us, it's perfect! Now, about the people. You gotta like the people you build with b/c you are like family for about a year talking several times a day & seeing each other a lot. We didn't realize this but lucked out because the people were so great. --Chris McGinley is an honest, professional, hard working, problem solver -- and he sticks to his word and takes great care to uphold the pride of his family's business. --Chuck McKenon was our Project Manager and we LOVED that guy. He did everything for us. All hours of the day, 7 days a week! --Melanie McGinley was always available to us in the office and made things happen for us as well. She runs operations & is the communication hub. Now about selections and upgrades - also a good experience. I have to mention Lennoire in regards to design & interior selections. Lennoire was our rep at Weisenbaker Design Center. She was a very smart lady with such good taste and ideas! She also treated us special. She met us on a Saturday (they're closed). A few Saturdays actually. I appreciated that so as not to miss work. Her suggestions came together in the house beautifully. ---And Kurk Homes included A LOT of things that other builders would consider an upgrade. Their level of selection w/ out even upgrading was always a step above "builder bland basic blah" selections. That made us very happy. Lennoire would show us what most builders give their clients and Kurk Homes' standards are considered upgrades to other builders - which means hidden costs! We upgraded granite 1 level and added some tile where carpet was included. That was about it. Crown molding, 3 foot wide (3x8) doors, plumbing control center, framed mirrors and too much to mention.....all that was included. No surprises! Of course we went over our lighting allowance but everyone does that!! We also bought our own appliances - although they offer top notch Whirlpool - we wanted GE. No problem there. They just wouldn't warranty it. Understood. Their guys still installed it all. My favorite thing is the pot filler. No charge. Just bought the fixture. Our shower is 8' x 4' w/ two shower heads, one being rain shower. Love! At Kurk Homes, the staff communicates and works together well. It is rare you can say that about a company. Other home owners allowed us to look through their homes at examples and ideas. All were pleased with Kurk. That was neat. One important note is our construction site was always clean. Our neighborhood is a stickler for hounding sites to stay clean but they didn't hound us b/c we were clean! Kurk always uses the same crews. They're all good! Lastly, I must say that Kurk Homes invited us 2 years in a row to their Christmas party, yet again making us feel like part of their extended family! We spent time with the McGinley family, including Chris' Dad and Grandfather, who were just wonderful people as well. They respect you and you respect them. Simple. Good people. Good family. Good business. Darn good house!! I wish I needed another home because I would use them in a heartbeat......but I have a feeling we will live here forever. A++++ for Kurk Homes. We completed a custom home with Kurk Homes 2015. We are very satisfied with our home, and feel that it has many unique features (beautiful Austin limestone stonework, a hand built craftsman stairway, custom transom windows) that we would not have gotten with many custom builders in this price range. We live near Houston's inner loop. We shopped around to several builders in the area, and we initially chose Kurk homes because of value, construction quality, and warranty, as well as the fact that it is a family business that has been around for 3 generations. Our first contact with the company was with Chris McGinley (the president of the company). He met with us a couple of times before we signed the design contract, explaining how the process worked and answering our many questions. The price per square foot is very reasonable compared to many builders in our area. We did spend a lot of time understanding what was included in the base price and planning ahead for the upgrades we wanted (we included about +25% to base cost for upgrades), so we were not surprised by any costs. In fact, after changing a couple of things during the build, we actually came in a bit under the budget. J. was our designer. He was very patient with the design process, and allowed us multiple iterations, which we felt were important to getting the house we wanted. Kemp was our primary construction supervisor. We were very pleased with his building expertise, the interaction with him, and his desire to build us the house we wanted. We had full access to the house during the build process, and communicated with Kemp several times a week to daily during the construction. After living in the house for a year and a half, we have only had a couple of minor issues. For those issues, Shelby and Eli, from the warranty department, are very responsive, and have handled our requests very quickly. Kurk Homes does work very hard to make the process of building a custom home a good one. They truly do want their customers to be happy, and they will stand by their warranty. I have had several friends build a custom home with different builders. They describe the process as a nightmare. I describe the process with Kurk Homes as very pleasant. Yes - there were some ups and downs (as there will always be with custom home building), but Kurk Homes will work with you to make sure you get the house you want. Building a custom home is a big undertaking. I highly recommend doing research ahead on what you want your house to look like. Kurk Homes is a family owned company - you're able to meet with the owners of the company, not a salesperson. The design center has plenty of selections to choose from, and we created our own cabinet design with Kent Moore - it turned out beautiful. Kurk isn't the cheapest company, but you get what you pay for. My home is extremely energy efficient, we moved in November 2016 and we've had a great experience - starting with designing the home from the ground up with J - who was extremely patient despite the millions of changes! Lisa helped hold our hands through the preconstruction process - and city of Houston was a doozie. It took over a year to build, you can't be impatient when it comes to CoH. I have called them on several occasions looking for advise for maintenance or other non-warranty issues and they have always been polite and helpful. Last week Eli, from warranty offered to come by and help me out with an issue i was having (couldn't find the GFI reset for one circuit). He took the time to drive out and quickly found it for me! Completely unrealistic on pricing that they tell you about during the pre-sale, you only learn about the true price after you give them the $2,500. Once they come back with the price that is $40 per square foot more than the original quote, for a house with no special features, they then tell you that the $2,500 has all been used up by the "designer's" time, despite it being a few simple drawings with no real detail, and it would not have taken many alterations had they actually listened to what we wanted. Save yourself the aggravation and just flush 25 hundred dollar bills down the toilet. Better yet, give that money to a good charity, at least you will have something to show for it. read more

Had serious problems just in design. A six month-long process ending in parting ways. They may be fine for spec homes, loved their design center, but they're trying to also do custom homes in Hill Country, which applies to me. Their design process entailed two staff departures, making me start over with new reps, three reps in total over 6 months. The communication with these reps was very poor, very little engagement in hearing the client's needs and navigating "design implications and options." I entered the process prepared with fully detailed concept plans - even renderings - using another software, really going into detail of each room where furniture would be, home theater viewing positions, dining dimensions, you name it, hours and hours of prep work handed them on day #1. Yet it took many iterations and long weeks working with their CAD designer to just get back to where my plans were using my software. While I didn't say it to antagonize, I would repeat myself with 2nd and 3rd requests for changes to get plans on point, and long periods of time would pass as their CAD designer would catch up. There was no need or excuse for that. He said something like, "well, I've never had to deal with someone not familiar with the conversion to CAD". Well, as I told him, "translating specific dimensions from one software to CAD doesn't result in changing dimensions of rooms materially, or changing layouts so we'd have to watch TV with our heads turned sideways, all design considerations we put into the material handed to you months ago, all you had to do was recreate them on CAD." Further, they claim to be "design build" but offered very little (virtually none) consultative guidance on design. One rep before he quit started at $750k range, got it down to $650k, then he quit Kurk Homes and the next rep started out with the Taj Mahal perspective, not connecting or focusing on our project adequately, and after eliminating 800 sf from the last version at our request, the next estimate came out ... $200k More (not Less with materially less s.f.) It was a real nightmare. I would ask, "what is driving the numbers," and get nowhere consultative. I spoke with the owner, Chris, in frustration, and he made a comment that "all our guys will do is what you ask." The implication and execution being, that if you ask them to build a 100' tall ceiling per se, they won't tell you you're blowing the budget, they'll just do it. Well, this is a design build project, no architect to be owner's consultative expert or advocate, so it's just the owner and builder, and if the builder can't speak to drivers of cost and design... you're sunk. That was Kurk Homes. 6 months of repeat requests, requests for guidance, checking the next version of plans to see which items they didn't change again as requested, and fumbling through rare estimates when they finally offered them, with no accounting as to what was driving costs, and what could be done to wrangle the costs back in line (or done proactively in advance of reflecting them in plans). Also had a lending broker and appraiser look at the plans in progress, and they couldn't make sense or justify the numbers Kurk's reps were quoting, sky high. There's much much more... but that's the heart of it. They may be great at building spec homes in Houston, but if you're looking for custom homes "design-build" in Hill Country, it's more "you speak, we'll add it on CAD even if it makes no economic or value sense or better ways to get it done, and then give you crazy bids". I had a very poor and ultimately unsuccessful experience ending at a failed design phase, with 6 months lost, and out my design deposit. read more

Kurk Homes did a wonderful job building our dream home. From the beginning to the end they were very friendly, helpful, and professional. Kurk homes built our home with pride. We have been in the home for over a year and have been very happy. Today being out of our warranty period we had a problem. I contacted Chris McGinley by email and within a short period had a response with a resolution. Two hours later I left my home with the problem resolved. In business integrity can not be taught or bought you either have it or you don't. I am very hands on when I have anything built and I try to do business with like minded people. Going with them was the worst decision I made in my life. I was lied to the core before signing the agreement. I was always pushed to buy costly stuff and to pay more money for that. If I declined they threatened me of not giving any warranty. They pressurize you mentally to the core. There where many times when i thought i should dispose my plan to build a house and buy an already built one. Not recommended. they waste your time and money and disturb you mentally.
