Went in for lunch. Reasonably priced and nice potions off the lunch menu. Had a bit of a language barrier with the wait staff, but worked out in the end. Ordered the edamame beans to start and the Avocado salad. All was fresh and there was quite a bit of avocado on the salad. For 5 bucks, not bad considering an avocado costs a dollar plus right now (sorry, that's my chef side speaking). Entree ordered was the Unagi Don (broiled eel over rice). The garnishes added were a nice touch, and they really don't have to do it, but they do. The cost of the garnishes is quite high, but it sets them apart. I've been here about 15 times now over the last few months. I come frequently for lunch and I've been a few times for dinner. I've tried most things on the menu. This place is 4 stars for Pinehurst Japanese food. The avocado salad is very good and high quality for the price. I recommend the miso soup and the gyoza dumplings. The lunch specials are tasty and very good value (8-9 dollars and includes rice plus either soup or salad). I would avoid the chicken, it's very tough and chewy and gristly. I got it twice and won't get it again. The steak is good. The sushi and sashimi are nicely plated and the fish tastes and appears to be fresh. The service is friendly and polite. I've been here a few times and it's been good the family seems very nice, sometimes the sushi isn't rolled tight but today it was good. I'm just very disappointed in our experience. My husband and I got a rare lunch date in, they're doing take out only so we ordered and sat outside to eat. Half way through our meal (we were the only customers) someone who works here came out and sat down with his phone up full volume and started smoking a cigarette at the next table over. I have asthma it instantly started making me cough, even if I didn't have asthma who can have a nice lunch outside with the thick smell of cigarette smoke and the noise of phone. The worst service and food I've had in years. Waitress did not know the menu. Cooked sushi came out raw and gooey Gyoza was not handmade or cooked thoroughly. It was still cold in the middle. SAUCE was bland Tempura was awful.. Stale and closely resembles card board. Miso was below average Rice was hard Overpriced everything. Unfortunately the quality of product the chef was working with was subpar and mediocre. The only reason I gave them two stars is because the place was clean and nice and the service was good. I also had a bite of something in one roll that I'm not sure if it was a piece of hard plastic or a fish scale, I tried to figure it out but I am not sure, it looked like a fish scale. This is just another restaurant making some easy money on the sushi craze by serving mediocre imitation sushi and Japanese food.
