Drunken Noodles w/ Shrimp and fried vegetable rolls were very fresh and tasty.Noodles were a little spicy but not overly. Cream cheese wontons weren't as fresh but I did have them Door Dashed and may have been fresher if ordered in the restaurant. Portions are good for the price. read more

Spice Cafe is open for two months now, and has gotten it right from the git-go. Tucked off U.S. Highway 1 across the parking lot from a shopping center, It is brightly decorated in various colors, clean, and holds about a dozen tables, attended to by a friendly and helpful staff. The lunch menu features 20 dishes, from Pad Thai, to five different curries, to several meat dishes. My companion's Chicken with Ginger Sauce, with celery, onions, scallions, snow peas, fresh ginger, and ginger sauce, was pronounced excellent, served as all lunch dishes with an egg roll (actually a spring roll) and steamed or fried rice. My Drunken Noodles with chicken likewise was excellent, served with broccoli, baby corn, and snow peas in a chili brown sauce. Diners choose from four levels of spiciness - - mild, medium, hot, or Thai hot, the latter flagged "For professionals only." Medium was exactly right for us. The dinner menu appears to offer the same 20 dishes, this time accompanied by jasmine rice, and adds four appetizers, four soups, three salads, four seafood offerings, two chicken dishes, and two combinations of chicken, shrimp, beef, and pork. Carry out is offered. While we were enjoying lunch, a diner at a different table finished his meal, paid, and left a dinner order to be picked up a few hours later. This is a comprehensive and fair review of Spice Cafe. It's a solid 3 stars for Pinehurst/Southern Pines Thai food. I ordered the chicken Tom Yum and the pork Pad See Ewe. I rate each 3/5 stars. The flavor of the Tom Yum was overall good. The balance was a little bit off, with the sweet component being a little too dominant, but that's common in Americanized Asian food. They left out a few key ingredients that are traditionally used in Tom Yum soup: Kaffir lime leaves and galangal. It's possible they used these during cooking and removed them before serving so as not to confuse people who think they are edible. The pad sew ewe was just OK. From what I can tell, they use the same dried rice noodles that you can buy at any grocery store. You can usually tell a difference when they use fresh noodles, like they do at Thai fusion in Pinehurst. The flavor was overall good, but again the noodles had a disappointing texture and there was way too much oil used in preparation of the dish. Another red flag is that no Thai chilis are actually used in the restaurant. They use red pepper flakes... if you're looking for a Thai restaurant to try in the area, I would recommend Thai fusion over this place simply due to better quality of ingredients. read more

I have given this place many tries, and my negative feelings only come around after I've gotten take out. The food itself is very good. Tasty, spicy (if you ask), and comes out relatively quickly. But if you take out....BEWARE. The portion they serve is ridiculous. I just left after spending 30$ on dinner for two. I got two types of curries (Panang and Yellow) and a large soup. They sent me off with a small soup and two dinners that are EMBARRASSINGLY small. The yellow curry has approximately 5 pieces of thin, small pieces of meat. The rest is liquid and potatoes. The Panang is the same--all liquid and vegetables, hardly ANY meat. This has happened three times, and I've waited to post a review because my dine-in experience has been so positive. Liberal portions and the kitchen is visible which I always like :) I like to come here as an alternative to Thai Orchid because you really get more bang for your buck. If you don't know much about Thai food you may be ok with this place. The food is bland and pretty Americanized. I ordered something hot, it was mild... I often cook dishes with Thai birds-eye chili peppers and I know "hot". I also don't recall any taste of fish sauce in a dish that should have had it...disappointing. One of my go to places for to-go food. I usually call in my order and go to pick it up, it takes about 15 minutes for them to get your order ready. The curries they make are very good, Thai style. The proteins they have available are very nice (tofu, chicken, shrimp, beef). The variety of veggies they have is also very good, plus, if you want extra of anything all you have to do is ask. Another thing you can do is tell them how spicy you want your food (I usually go with Thai hot). The lady who owns the place is very sweet and you can taste the love (and spice!) that she puts in to every dish. read more

Not the best. We went there Monday because Thai Orchid was closed. We got peanut curry chicken & green salads. The lettuce & veggies were a bit wilted & had spots from being old. Plus- The dressing had so much vinegar it hurt. The chicken dish was more pasta than meat, kind of odd - but it also came with rice. Someone else said 'doesn't satisfy Thai cravings,' I think that sums it up perfectly. The employee who took our order was very nice though. Always a plus. I ordered "Thai Hot" & was warned of its heat, but received something I would rate in the medium-hot range, not Thai hot. Very few veggies (if any?) in Pad Thai and in Panang Curry. The Crab Rangoon was a little too dried out in the center, which eliminated any hint of crab, and tasted ultimately like a crispy dried out star shaped object with semi hardened cream cheese in the middle. The Tom Yum soup was probably the worst I have ever had, it's not bad, it's just not as good as the Tom Yum I have had everywhere else. I think they're missing some key ingredients like lemon grass, or MSG who knows? This is a new Thai Restaurant in Southern Pines, only been open for 3 months. It's in a somewhat awkward location, it's a little difficult to see from the main road. As such, we were the only ones in there for lunch on a Sunday around noon. It is a very small restaurant, you can see right into the kitchen as soon as you walk in the door. Nothing fancy, just straight up quick Thai food. They have a lunch and dinner menu. Almost every entree for lunch is $6.99 (this includes a spring roll and side of steam/fried rice). The dinner menu is around $9.99. As were were the only ones there, we could hear and see the cook making our orders right there....this led to some fresh, hot meals. I had the chicken pad thai and wifey had the basil chicken. These are definitely lunch size portions. When I first saw the $6.99 menu price, I was impressed...but then I saw the portion size. We also had the chicken satay and a thai ice tea....both excellent. They also have degrees of spice. We had the medium spice, which actually wasn't spicy at all. They are friends with the owners of Thai Orchid. But not related, so the food is prepared differently. We actually like it better than Thai Orchid. THM (Take Home Message): Great Thai food at great prices. Don't expect anything fancy. I imagine they may get a decent lunch crowd during the week, but I am worried that it's location will hurt them in the long run. I am hoping this review entices people to try it out. If you read my other reviews, you know I am very critical.....I think Spice Cafe deserves to stay open. read more

Best Thai food in the area. The pad thai is the closest to authentic that I've had and by authentic I mean off of a street food truck in Bangkok. Not sweet or full of MSG for American palettes. Their plain fried rice on their lunch specials is probably my favorite. Nothing fancy just very good! Good service and reasonably priced as well. read more

I've been to the other two Thai restaurants in the Pines a million times, and from my one experience here, I rank Spice Cafe above Thai Basil but a little behind Thai Orchid.
