Solid Chinese fast food. The wings were crispy and delicious. Chicken and broccoli was greasy and delicious, exactly how it tasted at my parent's old restaurant. The general tso chicken was actually quite surprising - it had more of a spicy kick than most places so I really enjoyed it. Also their pork fried rice is dirty and delish. Take-out kind of place. I don't believe they do delivery. Not all fast food Chinese restaurants taste the same, but Kim Kau is definitely one of the better ones out there. I would also like to note that JL Jupiter lied. I placed a take out order with a man who seemed off. I say this because he wouldn't look at me and honestly seemed uncomfortable taking my order. It took him awhile to even acknowledge me. EVEN THOUGH we locked eyes for a second as I came in the door and approached the counter. Anyways... I ordered, he charged me for my order and I said to him ,"The price doesn't seem correct." He claimed it was, so I paid and went on my way but something didn't sit right with me. The very next day I came back at the same time and he was nowhere to be found. I used to eat here over 30 years ago during my Law Enforcement career. That's when you had the real Chinese cooks on there. They have replaced their cooks with Mexicans. I recently ordered food from here and it was trash. One of the items I ordered was a large chicken noodle soup. I was happy to see there was a Chinese restaurant that was actually open near me. I called ahead to order and then walked over to pick up my meal. When I arrived, it was fairly busy and my order was ready. I was planning to pay with credit card, but the locals informed me that this establishment only takes cash. Thankfully, I always carry some with me and had no problem getting my food. I ordered the pepper steak combo, complete with with roast pork fried rice and an egg roll. I also got the shrimp wontons, which came with sweet and sour sauce. The egg roll was very crunchy, packed with vegetables. I think there was too much outer shell, which was quite thick. The roast pork fried rice was just okay. There wasn't a ton of roast pork and was slightly on the bland side. The steak came with green peppers and onion and this was pretty good. The dish was coated with yummy sauce and the steak was tender and tasty. The peppers and onion were nice and fresh. Shrimp wontons were cutely wrapped and delightfully crispy, but the shrimp filling was not as flavorful as it could be. Another time one of my roommates ordered the broccoli and shrimp. I found the shrimp to be large sized and extremely juicy, packed with flavor from the brown sauce. The broccoli was cooked to perfection as well, boasting just the right consistency with a satisfying crunch. The prices were reasonable. For instance, the combination platters are around $9-11 and the fried wonton shrimp was only $6.25. I would be open to trying other menu items but with so many other options, it won't be for awhile. read more

I've been going to Kum Kau since the late 70s. I lived a few blocks away when they were just a "hole in the wall" Chinese spot. Now they own the entire building and the food is the same. I just wish they accepted credit cards. read more

A bit of a mixed review here. Not a fan of any of the Chinese food options. It's not bad, but really simple and nothing special. The reason I'm giving four stars is because of the chicken wings. I come here multiple times a month just to order the chicken wings. Little hot sauce in the side and I'm good to go. Also the folks working behind the counter are busting it 24/7 and do a great job getting people in and out. So even if it's packed you'll get out pretty quickly. read more

We have been coming here for decades. Everyone knows that Kum Kau this is the truth. You should always get 1. The pink lemonade, always!! 2. Scallion pancakes. 3. Crab Rangoon. Those are just the starters/appetizers/must haves. Now these my favorite meals 1.Sweet and sour chicken combination with spring roll and vegetables fried rice. 2.Chicken and broccoli in garlic sauce combination with spring roll and vegetables fried rice. 3. General Tso's chicken combination with spring roll and vegetables fried rice. Currently due to covid they only offer take out. Call ahead to place an order. When it was good it must have been really good because now that I've tasted it and it isn't that good (TO ME), many tables were occupied. There's that reputation thing eh. I had the house fried rice and their famous shrimp (I forgot what it's called) Who am I to knock this spot? Disclaimer; I only tried two items ... but this is what I always order to test out a place! Shrimp fried rice and beef with broccoli. Basic Chinese take out fried rice is a staple, but it is VERY DIFFICULT to get it made well. I want: *Fresh tasting shrimp not over cooked * Egg * scallion and bean sprouts * flavor I don't want * peas and carrots * yellow rice, stale rice This place didn't have peas and carrots but the rice had no flavor! (Umami) The rice was yellow.... This usually means the base is pre made and they add meat or shrimp etc. Based on a YouTube recommendation that said this was the best Chinese takeout in Brooklyn, (I walked over 20 blocks after work to get there, and 90minutes to get home) I couldn't wait to try it because I LOVE CHINESE FOOD! This is my go to Chinese restaurant for decades. I have lived in neighborhood for over 3 decades. The only other Chinese food I eat is from Wo Hop in Chinatown. My main dishes are, beef with broccoli, spareribs, general Tao shrimp and my favorite fried shrimp dumplings! Spare ribs are good and fried rice, also shrimp with broccoli. They're in what used to fondly be "the hood", so don't expect fine dining, although they do have a legit dining area. Most folks just call in orders for pickup or get their food to-go. Kum Kau has always been a hit or miss, but this week has been more problematic than most. The quality of the food has been declining since the pandemic ended but the bigger concern is the shady behavior. I've paid 3 different prices for the same order this week, only one of which actually match the menu price. $10.70, $11.70, and $13.70 for the same portion. It concerns me primarily because I'm pretty sure for similar reasons in the early 2000's with credit card transactions are the reason why they aren't allowed to process credit cards today. You can say it's only a dollar here, and a dollar there and mistakes happen, but 3 times in a week is concerning. It lends the impression that rather than trying to discreetly skim a little off the top they don't care if you notice. I've called 311 about it, because what else can you do. The food was horrible!! When I pulled up the restaurant was empty that should've been a warning not to go in but I was hungry so I decided to order anyway. I ordered shrimp and broccoli, with shrimp fried rice it was ready quickly but it was down hill from there. 1. I asked her to put onion and scallions in the rice . I received onions and green peas (which I dislike) in my rice. 2. The rice was gross, old and hard. 3. The shrimp wasn't cleaned properly. There was 'doo doo' vein in the shrimp! 3. I'm a fairly newbie customer to this popular Chinese restaurant. Some coworkers were shocked that Ive never been since I was born and raised in Brooklyn. I've been a few times now and the food is pretty good. Everytime I go the place is packed. Now I've learned to call my order in and pick up. I love that this place stays open a little later since I work at night. I've had the chicken and broccoli which is my favorite, chow and lo mein, fried chicken and rice. I've also used this place to order large pans of food for my department celebration functions. The prices are fair and reasonable. I called in my order for House Special Fried Rice and a few other items..get all the way home and saw I got lo mein(a bunch of noodles and very VERY little meat) instead.
