Ok, Kuhnhenn. I see you. You're doing your thing. You've got yourself a nice large taproom with a big ol bar and plenty of tables. You've usually got some kind of food wagon parked up on your doorstep. You've got like a thousand beers on tap. You've got free popcorn - always a nice touch. But I do have some hesitations. Your beer is pretty solid, but nothing I've ever been able to get too psyched about. Enjoyable, yes. Memorable, eh. Unfortunately, your service *is* memorable. In a bad way. Not much to say here that hasn't already been said. Say what you will about the atmosphere, the food, the service etc... it may be your thing or maybe it isn't. Who cares? We are fundamentally talking about a BREWERY here and their beer is as good as it gets. This is a world-class brewery making some of the top beers in the whole world, right smack dab in the middle of Warren, MI. 4th Dementia? DRIPA? Raspberry Eisbock? Simcoe Silly? C'mon, are you serious? And that is just the tip of the iceberg! If you are a fan of good, no great, no AMAZING beer, this place deserves nothing less than 5 stars. As someone who doesn't really enjoy beer (especially bitter ones) I came here because of my SO and had a great experience! The staff was very helpful and friendly. I had a difficult time deciding what drink to order, and the bartenders gave me several recommendations of beers that weren't too bitter. Multiple members of the staff checked up on me periodically and offered samples! I sampled the Les Saisonniers and ordered one. It was good to me, as someone who doesn't particularly enjoy beer, so if you don't enjoy bitter beer, consider sampling/ordering this one. My SO ordered a flight of 5 beers, which is also something to consider if you're indecisive or want to try a variety. read more

I have been stopping by a dog-friendly spot after my weekend hikes, and on calling I learned that their patio was dog-friendly. So, I showed up and headed inside to order (early October). The service was nice, but the beer list wasn't great - no descriptions for any of the beers, so I was largely guessing at which ones were likely the darker options. On setting up outside though, I was very disappointed. There were one or two wooden tables on the side of the patio, taken, leaving only cheap plastic chairs and tables that filled the rest of the patio. These tables were disgustingly dirty, and clearly had seen cleaning no time in the last month. Really made me uncomfortable from a COVID standpoint and I did not spend long there. On the beer side, they clearly excel at their IPAs, which are not my interest. The strawberry was reasonably good, but the darks were over-heavy on burnt flavors, not a good flavor profile. Would not come back based on this experience. read more

The brewpub anonymously sits on a busy intersection in the Detroit suburb of Warren, sandwiched between an auto repair garage and the Kuhnhenn home brew supply shop. The tap room makes a great first impression; old school wood floor, a huge wood paneled bar and a handful of well crafted high top tables complete the spread. The brewing area is visible from just about every angle from the bar floor and a huge back lit "Kuhnhenn" labeled mirror keeps watch over all of the patrons. This review is post renovation; anyone remember the cramped, close quarters beer hall? Even after the expansion, you better get here early if you want a seat. The secret has been out for some time now... The quality of Kuhnhenn is second to none. Each beer, wine and mead is well crafted and truly deserves every bit of high acclaim. Not once have I been disappointed with any offering and I truly am thankful to have such a great brewery close to home. Service has been up and down. I've been going to Kuhnhenn for almost 10 years now and at first, the service was fantastic, but shortly before and after their expansion, it took a nose dive. The past few visits have been a lot better now that any server/bartender can wait on you. Huge improvement on the service; there was a time we wouldn't even want to go because of poor service, even during off peak hours. The beer selection at Kuhnhenn never disappoints and even if you just barley like beer, they'll have a style that you will enjoy. There's usually at least 10-12 beers on tap at any given time, the beer is always fantastic as is the variety. The food menu is very limited; consisting for frozen pizza and pretzels mostly. They will let you bring food in and they even offer menus of local delivery joints that will bring outside food to you. Kuhnhenn is all about the beer; bring your own food. Overall, I haven't had a disappointment with Kuhnhenn. They craft some of the best beer Michigan has to offer and while it can get cramped during the busiest of times, an average sized crowd is really a lot of fun, especially during a Wing/Tigers/Lions/Pistons game. read more

When friends visit from Grand Rapids, they want to go to Kuhnhenn Brewing. Why? Because Grand Rapids is full of great beer, and when they are away from home, they want to go somewhere of equal caliber. I love Kuhnhenn. They make inventive beers, sometimes even erring on the side of weird (the blue/green Kap'n Crunch Berries beer comes to mind) and I sincerely appreciate having a tap list that is so long, it's intimidating. Give me too many options! Make it so that the server has to check on me several times before I can even decide my first beer! I am absolutely serious, and yes, that makes me the world's most annoying bar patron. I will say that I sometimes find their large, communal tables a little annoying- it can make it difficult to find a spot to accommodate your party, and that sometimes force you to awkwardly squeeze in next to a stranger, at a closer proximity than which I'm comfortable... but if that is my only complaint, it could certainly be much, much worse. read more

Well, it's about damn time I found myself down here. I've been into craft beer for a bit over a year now, and have long thought of Kuhnhenn as the "king" of Michigan microbreweries (of course there's Bell's and Founders... but whatever). I finally went down this past evening and I'd go back and go back again. When I first walked in, I asked if a group of people asked for a five-person reservation. I got a pretty snobby, "We don't accept reservations here." and I just sat down alone and waited. So far, so good! I was expecting some waitresses that hated their job! Before long, the people I was meeting arrived, and we got some beer. I sat with my back to the windows so I could see the main bar area as well as all the TVs. The whole place is just covered in wood and lacquer... that's really all it is. It doesn't look bad, it just looks kind of ordinary. What doesn't look ordinary are the TVs... holy fucking screenburn! I think it's time to get some new TVs, Kuhnhenn brothers, what do you think? Alright, alright... the beer. I wound up getting 2011 Vintage Fourth Dementia, Bourbon Barrel Fourth Dementia, TRIPA, Export Stout, and Raspberry Eisbock in a sampler for about $12.50. The 2011 Fourth Dementia and Raspberry Eisbock came with half pours, but that's what I expected. The quality of beer and the ABV made the $12.50 or so total price pretty reasonable. After the paddle, I tried a Conundrum... which reminded me of a watered down Export Stout -- a great session beer. Lucky for me, Detroit BBQ Company was in Kuhnhenn offering up some BBQ. I got a pulled pork sandwich (which came with a side of spicy coleslaw) for $8, and I thought it was great. Even BEFORE drinking much of anything, I thought this was some of the best BBQ I had ever had... it didn't even need any BBQ sauce on it. The normal food that Kuhnhenn has is pizza, pretzels, crackers, and cheese... nothing too special. I just came on the right day. My first impression from a random snobby waitress wasn't a great one, but my OWN waitress was knowledgeable about beer, patient, and attentive. It's stupid to give 4* to Kuhnhenn for this reason, but I am ... I give them a 4* rating simply because the prices are a BIT high (wah, wah, wah, I know), the parking area is relatively small, and the food they normally serve is originally frozen ... I think. I get it, they're a brewery, but I've been to plenty of breweries that have outstanding food. Dammit Kuhnhenn, get an executive chef in house! In spite of those minor problems, I would love to go back. I want to go back. Can we go back? read more

They had alot of interesting takes on some common styles. Certainly something for everyone here. I had the DRIPA and fluffer, and while they didn't blow my socks off, I can understand the appeal of their beers if they are consistent which seems to be the story talking with other patrons. I'd heard good things about Kuhnhenn Brewing, and was glad to finally get there. We found a wonderful atmosphere, friendly and helpful attitude throughout -- excellent beer, service and food. Lowkey-richly-festive holiday atmosphere this time of year, too; pretty tree and other decorations. The Anneliese Amber beer was excellent; the free popcorn was remarkably fresh and crispy/crunchy/satisfying without the heavy flavor-dusting I often find. Since they were sold out of the Artisan Cheese Board (my first choice in the food offerings), we tried the 12" soft pretzel. It was delightfully fresh and good; obviously delivered straight from the oven, along with two kinds of mustard and a cheese sauce for dipping. In casual observation, I noticed the bartender decanting some red wine between the bottle and the glass; I think that goes a long way in indicating the care they take to present the best, as well as possible. read more

Terrible parking first off. It's right off of Mound road and 13 & 1/2 mile. It's hard to find if you didn't know where it was/ is. There's a defunct auto shop in the front of it so it's kind of hidden. Also, limited security cameras. DO NOT PARK OUT FRONT! I repeat. Don't. You may pay the price as I had, when my car was keyed to hell in the hours of 7-9 pm on a Friday night by some d- bag who thought that that would get his or her rocks off. This completely ruined my experience. However the waitstaff was nice about it, offering whatever assistance they could. I had to call the cops and get a report (then the cop asks to check out my truck cause he's in the market for a new one... geez). I like their beer but this experience will keep me away rather permanently. I don't trust anyone on the eastside as we call it here in Metro Detroit and probably never will suggest going here, unless you walk there. read more

I have been a fan of Kuhnhenn for years. Their beer selection is consistently changing with over 10 onsite made beers every visit. For my non-beer drinking frienda, they like that this brewery offers wine and mead selections, again made by Kuhnhenn. They have a great environment, having remodeled in the past few years. Lots of windows, very open and bright. Their food selection is limited, but the popcorn is self-serve and free. The stuffed pretzels are delicious. They have a jalapeno cheese and sweet cream cheese options. The staff is knowledgable, friendly, and efficient. They have a frequent guest card. 10 visits and then $5 off next visit. Their wine selection is just okay, however everyone I know that frequently go here are doing so for the beer. This is a nice local spot I will continue to support. Whooooo! The extraneous ale messed me up. It is a bit expensive in the sense of per beer price. However, each beer's alcohol content is at least the equvalent of two miller lights. If you're a huge craft beer fan, you'll love this brewery. The drinks are magical, the staff is super friendly, and there always are good vibes here. I always recommend first-timers to get the Dripa, and then experiment with what they wanna get. Flights are available so take advantage of those. It isn't a full blown restaurant, but there's snacks, plus free popcorn, but the main focus is your carefully crafted drinks, so if you need to, bring your food with you. So the beer, wine, ciders, and meads are really great here, of course which ones you'll like are up to you. read more

In the younger portion of my middle age, I've learned a few important things about drinking. That quality beats quantity. That I'm in so much better shape the next morning when I stop myself after three pints. That as I push myself beyond my three pint cut-off point, my jokes tend to lose their cohesion and I delve off into some strange sort of Sean Connery impersonation. Knowing all of these things, I still drank six pints at Kuhnhenn's the other day. And as I belligerently babbled in the passenger seat as my lady tried not to lose her cool, thinking I was so in for it the next day for` taking her to dinner at a place that really didn't have food, I concluded it was so worth it. The biggest problem with Kuhnhenn is that there's so much quality on the menu, you can't help but over-imbibe. I started with the Imperial Creme Brulee Java Stout, and was glad I ordered it first because I don't think I could have said its name toward the end of my drinking spree. It had a heavy coffee flavor, which worked well for a porter. The DRIPA had a certain dangerous quality to it, as it didn't taste as strong as a beer with that high of alcohol content should. Another favorite was the Belgian Strong, which had a crisp fruit tone that masked a huge APV. The White Devil, while an accurate description of me, was the one beer that didn't really hit the mark as it was a bit too Hoegaarden's for me. If you're thinking of heading into Kuhnhenn, do it. I'm conflicted because I love Kuhnhenn's beers. They are imaginative as they are tasty, and I LOVE trying out their "show beers" at the local beerfests. They are always pushing the limits, and I respect that. I went in originally a long time ago when they were in transition to their expansion. It was crowded and I couldn't get served a beer to save my life. So we left. This time, their expansion is complete and well... It's as sterile and personality-less as Indianapolis. Lots of high tables with shiny lacquer, high chairs, spanking clean bar. It's spacious and open, but it lacks warmth. They've got beers for everyone. From the normal good ol' American IPA to various fruit flavored "panty droppers" to a slap to the face Simcoe Silly (personal fav). They even have wines, meades, homemade beers. The lists are endless. For food they have pizza, cheese and crackers, and other snackies. I ordered some cheese (out of 6 listed on the menu, 1 was past expiration, and 2 were available). Love their beers. Don't love the space. Kuhnhenn is going to be a growler-to-go only bar for me. read more

I don't get it. I just really don't get it. You can offer a stellar product, but if your service is garbage then it doesn't matter. I am sure a few of you have read my previous review of this place (if not it should be listed below this one) and I had sworn to never go back there. Well I am a man that believes in second chances and redemption so I decided to give them one more shot. A couple buddies and I went there after work last night to enjoy a some beers and unwind. The main reason we opted to go here is because they allow outside food and we had all been wanting to try Pilar's Tamales which is across the street from them. Just as an FYI sidenote, if you haven't tried Pilar's I highly suggest you do. Pretty darn good stuff. Kuhnhenn's wasn't overly busy, but there were a number of people there. Nothing crazy that should cause lapses in service though - it was a typical Wednesday night in a bar. My buddies got there first to grab a table while I picked up our eats. When I made it to Kuhnhenn's it took a good five minutes before anyone came over to ask me what I wanted to drink and then it was a pain to get them to come back when we wanted to order more beer. That was strike one. Strike two was when they kept screwing up our bill and tried to charge my buddy for a drink he wanted, but they were out of. While the one girl who cashed us out was nice, she just didn't seem to logically grasp the mistakes even after we pointed them out. We had asked for the check to be split two ways as my beers were being paid for as I bought the grub. We get the split tabs and one was correct and the other was the entire unsplit check with the only difference being the one drink removed that they were out of. We had to explain multiple times how it was not right before it was finally settled correctly. The third strike was the younger guy who worked there who was also waiting on us. He seemed very agitated as if he didn't want to be there. I get it, we all have bad days where we just don't want to be at work. I have those days too, but I never show it to the customer I am dealing with. He would come by, ask what we wanted and then place his hands on the table tapping his fingers and rolling his eyes as if to signal for us to hurry up. Also when we had asked for our check from the female waitress he stormed through enroute to another table and replied in a snotty tone "They just told me they didn't WANT anything else!" Overall he was just rude and unpleasant to deal with. I am in a pretty decent mood right now so I am going to be generous and give them a slightly higher rating then before. Let it be known though that the ONLY reason I am bumping them up to two stars is just because I really do like the Simcoe Silly that they offer, but that's it. Sadly though that is not enough to warrant me going back there. You had your chance at redemption Kuhnhenn and you blew it. read more

The beer here is by far the best available known to man. Huge flavors, high gravity, amd malty richness. My favorite, especially the bourbon barrell aged barley wines- YUM! Big up$ to the brewers who consistently bring the best tasting beers my mouth has ever seen, and boy has my mouth seen some flavors. I have never had any problem with the service here, but by taking a second and looking at the previous bad reviewers photos i can guestimate that they were probably douche bags who don't know to act and do not deserve service. Sorry, some people just don't know how to act.... The only thing worse than a thirsty yelper type is a drunk one... My only complaint is that the brewery is deep in the burbs and not within the city limits of Detroit. It makes drunk driving a reality and keeps me from having more than a beer or two. read more

The beer deserves 4 stars but the service was so horrible I can't give the place more than 2. I live in GA and told the server that several friends told me this was a "must do" on my trip. I also told her I was planning on buying several growlers to take back with me. I thought that her knowing I was there to spend some $$ would help service She was not knowledgeable about the beers at all. She could not explain the different styles of beers to my non- beer geek friend who was with me. We had to stand up and wave down a server or bartender whenever we wanted another sampler. The server told me "we are really busy" but the place was less than 70% capacity and the two dudes, who I assumed were bartenders, were just standing around behind the bar. I did buy 5 growlers because the beer was good, but I would not recommend hanging out at this place until they educate the staff on their beer. read more

I love the beers here, especially the Loonie Kuhnie Pale Ale. The only beer I didn't like was brewed with heather... I thought it would be interesting, but it was just disgusting. *shudder* Kuhnhenn doesn't have much to offer when it comes to food (although they do have free popcorn), so they encourage people to bring their own or get delivery. I like to get a group of people and then we go all out, bringing hummus, veggie and fruit trays, chips, cookies, cheese and crackers, etc. One time a friend brought a spinach salad with goat cheese. I think we got looks from people at nearby tables. We also bring board games. haha It can be somewhat difficult to get the servers' attention, but I usually let the boyfriend take care of that since he is a lot taller (and therefore more difficult to ignore/overlook) than me. The parking lot kinda sucks. It's a gravel lot, and some people take up a lot of space and others end up having to double park on busy nights. FYI, you can join their "bierthday" club on the website and get a free beverage, a free personal pizza (it's tiny, maybe 5" in diameter), and a free size upgrade on a drink. My boyfriend and I are from Chicago. It's always a blast coming here. We make the 6/7 hr drive just for the beer. It's one of our absolute favorites. Besides the beer we love the hospitality from Evelyn. If it weren't for her, seriously, we wouldn't ever come back. Why you ask? Newbies don't remember what we like! Nor do they know what is on the menu and have to ask other people. Oops. Sorry too forward. Anyway, c'mon. Oh, Kuhnhenn - as much as I love your beers and want to give you more stars, I just can't. Don't get me wrong, Kuhnhenn is my favorite brewery in the area, and I truly love the Kolsch and the Simcoe Silly but lately service here has been absolutely terrible. We're talking 20 to 30 minute waits before any of the staff notice you've walked in and about the same wait between beers. The past 3-4 visits, after numerous attempts to flag down anyone who might be able to bring our table more drinks, I've had to walk up to the bar myself and bring back everyone's drink orders. This has been happening regularly regardless of how busy it is at the brewery. Listen, if I'm basically gonna have to serve my own beers I could just drink at home. Come on Kuhnhenn, be better. UPDATE (06/23/14): Kuhnhenn seems to made at effort at improving service overall since this review and I haven't had any of the same problems recently. I will note that even in the past few months Kuhnheen seems to be growing in popularity and it's now nearly impossible to show up on any night of the week and be able to hold a conversation cross the table without yelling. Looks like a supper club outside, sounds like a house party inside. Kuhnhenn has a hefty reputation as a top midwest brewer with very limited distribution and we were anxious to give them a try during our latest visit in town this February. It was well worth the trip north out of Detroit proper, and as far as the quality of beer goes, they're the best at the craft I've found so far in the city area. On the Saturday night we arrived, the tap room was much louder and packed than just about any brewery I've been to recently. Top 40 hits - Bon Jovi and Lady Gaga were unexpected musical company when we walked in. The crowd was in a very college state of mind. It took us a few minutes to get acclimated, but the amazing beer helped us get over the need to shout at each other. Their tap list runs deep with over a dozen, nearly two dozen offerings of beer and a handful of meads. The Forbidden IPA was the biggest and best flavored of everything I tried, and I recommend saving the mead till later in the evening. The waitstaff and the bartenders were all quick on their feet and anxious to help. If you're like me and you like to separate your brewery scene from your fist pumping bar scene, try stopping by earlier rather than later in the evening. On the other hand, if you're looking to rock a little, this could be your late night Detroit (*ahem* Warren) spot. read more

If I could divide the rating up I would give them a four for thier beer selection, because there beer is really good and because you can bring dinner in. As far as service goes they get a one, my friends and I have been there several times and the service has been awful. If you go plan to spend some time there, because it takes a while for them to wait on you and plan to have an empty beer cup for a while. My boyfriend lives right down the road from Kuhnhenn's and we were so excited about that when he first moved there. Now, after having been there several time and having such horrible service, we don't go there much, because we usually leave aggravated. This is the second time I've been here. Both times I've gotten a flight of beer. They have a pretty big selection of beer sorted by category which is helpful. The flight is 19$ which I think is fair. Some of the choices are meads. All of it was super tasty. The service was also great. We sat at the bar and the bartenders were efficient and nice. We also got both the jalepeno pretzel and the cream cheese one. I thought the cream cheese one was really good! I'm not much of a spicy person but my boyfriend really liked the jalepeno one as well. The cheese was on the inside of the pretzels which was cool. Also liked the atmosphere of this place and the fact that they have Mario even though I didn't get a chance to play it. read more

The best "crafted" and most creative beers in Michigan, and judging from all their awards, one of the best across the nation. The beers are simply some of the most interesting and flavorful I've ever had. DRIPA is head and shoulders above the competition, with unequaled complexity, smoothness, and finish. The dark beers are all delicious. This is a beer lover's paradise, with so many interesting beers on tap that you need to come back several times to fully appreciate the breadth of the offering. This is a down home place, unpretentious and friendly. The help has always been great when I've been there. They let you taste any beer, and bring you the sample with a smile. I suspect that those few who complain about it are really the ones with an attitude problem. If you come here, do us all a favor and check your attitude at the door. To those who complain about the lack of food, give them a break: They don't have a kitchen! And they let you bring in any food you want. Plus, they have a huge popcorn machine that you can dip into for free, as many times as you want. I call that class. Moreover, they now have a second location -- with kitchen -- and great food. read more

Whether you're bringing in a growler for refill or sitting in the pub having a beer the wait for someone to assist you is mind boggling. I am a beer snob. I've been to 70+ breweries in the US at one time or another, and had somewhere in the neighborhood of 4000 different beers in my life. So the following line means a lot: Kuhnhenn is the best brewery I've ever been to, with some of the best beers I've ever had. Although the place is tiny, they brew such small batches that they manage to keep 10+ taps on at any given time. Also, because the batches are small, the beers are always fresh and never sit around for long before being drank. They do an excellent job of brewing to season, with a lot of refreshing choices in the summer, and bigger warming beers during the cold weather. That said, even in the summer you can find some big malty beers, and you can find a good lager even in January. On top of that, they also make their own wine (including sherry!!) and mead. The wines tend to be Michigan-fruit-infused variations on traditional styles, such as a green apple riesling or a tropical fruit gewurztraminer. On a visit earlier in the year they had an Amarone available that surprised me, as it was better than some authentic versions I've had that ran me more than 50 dollars a bottle. Although they don't offer much by way of food, they do have a great selection of sausages and cheeses. It really adds to the atmosphere to have a little summer sausage and some good cheese, and it definitely complements the flavors in the beer. Had a flight, all of the beers were fantastic! Wish it had more food but the great beer and helpful staff more than make up for it

What else needs to be said about a place that offers beers such as Blueberry Panty Dropper and Penetration Porter? Funny names that make you giggle like a guilty kid aside, the beer selection is tasty and plentiful, and while they don't have an extensive menu, you can't beat their sweet cream cheese stuffed pretzels, which are way better and way cheaper then you'd get at a mall food stand. I haven't tried any of their wines, but anything called Candy Apple Riesling has to be a good time. read more

So happy that i finally was able to make it here and check this place out. we rolled in late on a Saturday night and the place was packed. That didn't matter as the staff does a great job and seem to really care about their jobs and company. We sat at the bar and had a few. I am now in love with their DRIPA which is a Double Rice IPA. It is strong and absolutely amazing. Can't wait to get back here and try more of their amazing beers. read more

A very good selection of different beers to try. A word of advice that I wish I knew ahead of time, they do not have a kitchen. They do serve frozen pizzas (yuck) and there is usually a food truck outside. However the night we went the food truck was kind of strange so we didn't try it. We heard though that the BbQ food truck is pretty good. It was very crowded the night we went and we ended up sharing a high top table with some other people we didn't know, but we like meeting new people! read more

If you're a fan of Michigan craft beer, this is the best spot in Metro Detroit. Kuhnhenn consistently puts out amazing beers, ranging from a creme brulee stout to the lightest pilsener. The Simcoe Silly is one of my favorites, and heavy as sin. If you don't drink beer, they sell their own wine and mead as well. You really can't go wrong. If you're inclined towards homebrewing, brewing world across the street will hook you up. Buy a block of cheese and some sausage, load some complimentary popcorn up with hot sauce, try at least one paddle, and settle in for one of their many festivals or some Detroit sports. read more

I love this place and keep kicking myself for not having stopped here sooner. What was I thinking. It is located just off of Mound on Chicago Road, on a path I know well (my sister lives right down the road). Serious beer fans just start driving here now. You won't be disappointed. The beer and wine menu reads like a manual. The place is not fancy. Think beer hall, a place to gather with friends and just catch up and have a great time. You can order tastings or full pints - and plenty of them. The fruit wine section alone leaves my mouth watering. The hardest part is choosing what I'd like beer or wine. It's akin to picking breakfast or lunch at a really amazing brunch place! In between all that beer, don't forget to grab some free popcorn from the bar. They coat it in hot sauce! On my first visit I had the Creme Brulee Java Stout and WOW would I recommend it again. Pretty sure they're famous for it. It's rich with obvious coffee notes and a touch of creme brulee sweetness that is there but isn't overpowering or girly. Trust me, it's amazing. I also fell in love with the Blueberry Pinot Noir. A delicate blend of two things I adore. For dessert, try the chocolatey Raspberry Truffle port. Just be warned -it is super sweet. I opted to share it with my date and splitting it was the perfect amount for both of us. read more
