When I found out one of my dear friends who I used to play mah jong at her house moved into a…read moresenior living community, I knew I wanted to visit her. I called her daughter to confirm she's now at One Kalakaua Senior Living (OK) and was provided with the room number, along with check in procedures when going. Located at the corner of Young St and Kalakaua Ave, OK opened its doors in 1997 where they offer units for people 55 years or older to purchase and live in. They also provide a cafeteria and cleaning services to assist the residents. I was fortunate to have found street parking as my friend and I went on an early weekday evening. There were just a handful of visitor parking where all of the stalls were occupied but one and luckily my friend snagged the last stall in front. Prior to entering, there's an iPad on the wall where all visitors need to register your information. As you enter the doors of OK, the receptionist confirms your registration and then with the information you entered in the iPad, a sticker is printed and you place it on your chest. This was a first time for the both of us so we asked the staff we were visiting our friend and gave the room number where she immediately blurted my friend's full name. Seems like she's well-known here and have many visitors. It's been over 30 years since OK opened and I was quite impressed they keep up with maintenance as I found OK to be modern and well kept. I noticed the tropical floral arrangements and plants, which gave the facility a bright and welcoming ambiance. My friend's unit was a good size for a one bedroom and it was well kept. The unit was in the midst of re-painting. She mentioned the cleaning services offered, where it's convenient and worthy of the fee but didn't say good things about the food. She's a foodie and loves Chinese food. We used to have potlucks where I was responsible of getting the food and a couple of times I cooked at her place. She's got a refined palate for sure. Overall, a very impressive first visit at OK. The residents who I casually bumped into seemed happy and content, just like my friend who is happy to be living here at OK.

It's really a beautiful building which has many activities for seniors, a pool and jacuzzi, library, salon, and fitness room. Residents own their own condos which is different from other senior living options. We came by to visit a friend and were able to dine with them in the dining room on the first floor. The hostess Fely was a bit rude, but after we checked in everyone else in the main dining room was extremely pleasant and accommodating. Dinner started off with a trip to the salad bar which was super fresh. We then had the soup of the day which was the Manhattan clam chowder followed by your entrée of choice, vegetable, starch, drink and dessert. I had the ribeye steak, French fries and spinach. Dessert was Kona coffee ice cream. The food here is quite good! Several steps up from food typically that would be served at a senior assisted living facility. Essentially like restaurant quality!! Really! I was actually pleasantly surprised.. Definitely a really nice place to live for seniors.

Just to keep a bit of privacy I will not mention staff individuals, But I felt as though I was family in here and I spent 10 weeks here for medical and physical therapy! Oh yeah and the food was so ONO. I initially was on the 2nd floor in a shared room and thanks to the floor manager I was transferred to the 5th floor by the end of week! She was the bomb I even spent a lot of my free time on the second floor . The fifth floor staff has so much aloha I felt at ease being in their care! If your family never needs a rehab facility I give it 100 out of 100!! Send them to the villas

Once I got into the building, I noticed a security guard was closely watching us. He was a good guy, though. He would tell me where to park and where to go. From the building elevator, we could easily find the patients' areas. The rooms were a bit dated but clean. There was a rec area where we may use as visitors lounge to interact with patients and close relatives. Nurses were very attractive and friendly. Fast recovery...

From the Villas it was an easy transition to Hale O Meleana by wheelchair through the courtyards. Thankful for the good care person is receiving at Hale O Meleana. Rooms are spacious and individual units with limited kitchen: full size refrigerator, microwave, hotpot... what else does one need? Not much when the delicious meals are provided in the dining room. Coffee and cookies available on self serve basis in the meeting room. Lots of activities for residents. Crafts, games, social events. There is a lovely garden as well as courtyard for those wanting fresh air. Hale O Meleana is a great option for those not ready to transition to long term adult housing which requires down payment (think Craigside, Arcadia, Kahala Nui) but needs temporary assistance. After a bout of hospital-acquired pneumonia turned our loved-one's nursing home stay from rehab to…read morelong-term care, our lives were turned inside out. While the CNAs and RNs at the nursing home provided all the basic care and kindness they could, the staffing just wasn't robust enough and we watched him go from walking to bedridden to rapid weight loss and failing, all within 2-1/2 months. We spent exhaustive amounts of time looking for alternative care that could give him a second chance, but despite a lot of glittering promises upfront from care placement agencies, every option came up empty. Finally we found Kina'Ole Estate. On our initial Google search, we breezed over Kina'Ole because we wrongly presumed from its architecture, design, and layout that only assisted living services would be offered. All the long-term care facilities we encountered looked like either a nursing home or a residential care home. Nestled in a gated, tropical setting in Kane'ohe, Kina'Ole is what long-term care should be, but seldom is. Each of the houses on the estate has no more than 8 residents, each with their own sizeable private room with en suite accessible bathroom and roll-in shower. The rooms are arranged around the periphery of each building so each resident has a bank of windows to provide sunlight and fresh breezes, as well as an individual split air conditioning unit for summer days if it gets a bit warm or humid. In the center of each house is a very large common room separated into various sitting areas where residents receive their meals (each house has a kitchen where the home-cooked meals are prepared) and are able to socialize and participate in the daily activities offered. Outside is a generous covered lanai with plenty of seating to enjoy a chat with other residents or visiting friends and relatives, or just relax to read a book. Each house has a full-time house manager and round-the-clock CNAs who are nothing short of amazing. The owner, Beth Slavens, has assembled the most wonderful group of caring individuals and each of them seems to take personal pride in providing exceptional care to the residents. The day our loved one moved in was the first day in months that we were able to finally breathe and know that he was getting the best care possible on O'ahu. Already our loved-one is perking up. He's gone from being stuck in a nursing home bed 24/7 to being safely assisted into a wheelchair and brought into the common room for every meal. They also take him outside so he can feel the sun and tradewinds. On his second day there, his caregiver wheeled him around for a complete tour of all the houses and he was alert and full of questions. We are now hopeful that he can progress back to good health and mobility again. Thank you to Beth and all our new ohana at Kina'Ole. We will forever be grateful.

There are so many options out there & finding a facility that is the right fit for your loved one is so important. Our family had to make that heart wrenching decision to place my dad in an assisted living facility & after looking at many options & visiting many facilities we first placed him in a large facility that was very nice, staff was nice & looked like it had all the bells & whistles...after about 4 weeks & many reasons later we knew that it was not a good fit for him & we needed to move him...he needed a smaller more home like atmosphere with more individual attention. A friend suggested Kina'Ole in Kaneohe & we arranged for a tour with the owner Beth. From the very moment we entered the beautiful gated property we knew this was the place for dad...it was exactly what we were looking for! The grounds are so beautiful & well taken care of...3 separate homes on the property with beautiful trees & flowers everywhere...nice paved walkways & even a few chickens running around with their baby chicks...my dad loved it!! We decided to place him there & it is the best decision ever!!! Dad's house has 8 rooms...each resident has their own large bedroom & private bathroom which we could decorate however we wanted too...so it could feel like home for him...theres a large living room/common area where the residents have their daily activities & delicious home cooked meals & where they can just relax together on their own recliners & watch a movie together & have a snack. There's lots of staff to help out & to care for dad & all the residents...the entire staff at Kina'Ole are amazing!!! They have made the transition so easy for dad & our family & to watch dad immediately feel welcomed, comfortable & relaxed there has been the best feeling in the world!! Dad loves to be outdoors & take walks & the staff will take him outside twice a day for a nice long walk or whenever he'd like one...they truly care for the residents as though they were their own family members! Dad told me that he "feels spoiled" there cause they all so attentive & take such good care of him! I almost cried hearing him say those words because I knew we had found the perfect place for him!!! He is thriving & happy & so are we!!! We now don't have the constant worry we had before...we know that everyone at Kina'Ole makes it their priority to care for dad's physical & emotional well-being...we finally have peace of mind The icing on the cake was last week I got a text message for Wehilani (head nurse in his house) & she sent me pics of dad out & about with his housemates enjoying the gorgeous grounds & having fun with his new friends. She shared with me how his week went...how well he's adjusting, how his appetite has been, how he's been sleeping (great) & just a report of his week Kina'Ole is a hidden gem & our family feels so blessed to now be part of their ohana!
