Follow up review as dad is still in rehab - Nuuanu Hale initiated a Care Plan meeting for dad, me, my brother and the managers of various areas who are assisting with Dad's rehabilitation- nurses, physical therapist/occupational therapist, diet, activities, and social services. My brother and I were pleasantly surprised to have each manager share their updates of dad and what their goals are to meet his proposed discharge date. Mahalo to Christina, the nurse manager who confirmed the medications he is receiving and asking us the right questions to ensure we're on the same page. She answered all our questions and reassured us that he is doing well and being pleasant to the nursing staff. Yay! Next up was Amrik the PT and OT manager who shared Dad is 94 but listening to the therapists and trying to do what they ask- he has walked 20 feet with a walker and they are giving cues for him to take bigger steps also helping him with proper way to get up out of a chair, sit down, sit on the potty, get up from potty, and encouraging him to keep trying, which he has been doing, much to our surprise and joy. Then there's dear Maka, manager of activities, she works hard to get to know each patient, what their interests are, hobbies, routine and wants to help them stay as close possible to what they enjoy doing at home. She visits Dad every day and when she heard he liked watching westerns and war movies, she got him his own TV since the double rooms share one TV only. She promised us in this meeting she would do it that day and it was there when my brother visited dad yesterday! At Christmas they received a big donation and she delivered all the gifts to each patient! A big mahalo to Jason, the dietary manager who brought us up to date on dad's eating habits which we had worried about and happy to see he was enjoying the food, his weight and although dad doesn't require a a structured diet, Jason still wants to make sure dad is okay with the food. He said there is an ice machine we can use for his Coca Cola and also a soda machine available in break room if he asks the nurse for one when we're not there. (Jennifer, another nurse, had taken the time to call me to say dad was craving one and didn't have change for the machine, so I was able to bring one for him). Jason explained the dietician will do an assessment of dad but we are happy he is eating the food and getting plenty of liquids. He looks great and his color is so good. Social Worker, Nu Timotea, was facilitating this meeting and did an awesome job explaining the next steps for his proposed discharge date. Helpful suggestions and recommendations gave us the baseline we needed to start the phone calls to begin the selection process of where is the safest and most comfortable for dad. I thanked all of them for making it a pleasant experience for dad and how impressed and touched we are with the care he receives as well as what we observe with the other patients. We are there every day at different times so we've met and seen various staff- everyone is cheerful, helpful, patient, gracious and kind. Even when they're super busy it seems they stop to reassure a patient or communicate what will happen next. My mother was there for three weeks and I was amazed at how much attentive care that their staff gave. They made her feel so welcome. They attended to her every deed and she flourish their period. This might be their first positive review, but trust me the staff there are remarkable. And especially Velma. My mother actually misses her and her company and her care. Don't let the building or the reviews fool you! Once you see how they interact and observe everything you will understand what I'm talking about. I have been visiting a family member there for about 5 months. The facility is aging and could use a touch up. The staff is friendly and always busy attending to patients. The caregiver patients ratio seems to be in order from my observation when I'm there. The area that I'm in has many elderly people that can be a bit of a handful. The caregivers do there best to accommodate the patients. If you are looking for a modern care home this is not the place. What really counts is the patient care. I would like to share my experience with Nuuanu Hale Care Home. I am very familiar with this facility since both my parents were residents there. First of all, I can say the treatment my parents by the staff were excellent. It can be seen always the respectfulness and care the residents receive. Their attitude always pleasant and good spirited. My belief is that not only the staff should bare sole responsibility for the quality of care for your loved one. The family should also participate by visiting as much as possible so the positive outcome is optimized. Secondly, the facility itself may show some age but it is kept clean and well organized. Lastly, I can truly say my family gained some good staff and resident friends there. I personally remain grateful and the memories of enjoyment at the Nuuanu Hale is appreciated. read more

I don't believe some of the reviews on this review list. Dad suffers from dementia, which is on the severe side. The past month had him falling several times due to a gait in his walk, and the ability to ambulate well which is a basic requirement of being in an assisted living facility. First of all, my Dad was in the Plaza at Punchbowl for an entire year. His condition deteriorated after being admitted to the emergency room several times, both Kuakini and Castle. Assisted living was no longer a viable option. After visiting several places, we elected to place him in Nuuanu Hale due to the proximity of our family members. We needed to be close to him to be able to see and reassure him that all was well. The staff at Nuuanu Hale went way over and above the call to get Dad admitted as quickly and as painlessly as possible. Gayle Lau and Dr. Edision Miyawaki played a huge role in our decision. Although the facility is older, it is well maintained, clean and brimming of happy, knowledgeable and capable staff. I instantly felt secure that my Dad would receive the best of care. The facility offers semi and quad rooms, with private bathrooms. There are safe fail methods in place that allow the residence freedom to move about easily. Hellos, welcomes, goodbyes, how are you today are greetings that make you feel like you want to be there. The nurses, charge nurses, RCAs, dietary staff as well as the janitorial staff are folks like you and me. It takes a special breed of people to work in a facility such as this due to the tremendous amounts of stress in caring for these residents. I applaud the staff for the efforts that they display, way over and above all else, the residents come first. This facility also allows visits 24/7. The doors are locked at 8 but if you wish to visit, no problem, just ring the bell. In some other places, you are not allowed to visit at certain times of the day. I like this availability better, you can drop in anytime to check on your loved one so there are no barriers. Smiles are indeed plentiful, there are residents in various stages of rehab, physical limitations, dementia, alzheimers, old age and more. The staff is well equipped to deal with issues that may arise. My Dad's happiness, care and quality of life is of the absolute importance to my Mother, my brothers, myself and other family members. I take comfort knowing that Nuuanu Hale is providing the best care for my Dad, after all, he is, MY DAD like no other. read more

Not a place to put any loved ones but due to medical insurance this was one of the care homes my mom was in, she stayed there for a week at most then I pulled her out, my mom called home crying that they left her in her poop for over 2 hours!!!!! For privacy reasons, I'll use the name Jo to portray my elderly loved one that was sent here. Jo was sent here because this was our only option offered to us upon Jo's discharge from the hospital. Our family was not impressed with the services and staff Nu'uanu Hale has to offer. 1) There's no type of security. Anyone is welcome to walk in and out of this facility with no questions asked. No visitation log or identification needs to be verified. The doors are unlocked 24/7. There are no visible cameras and the staff are not trained to be aware of the foot traffic. The only effort made to monitor the residents from wondering out onto the busy Pali Highway, is an ankle bracelet which I only saw on one female resident. That poses a danger to everyone on the property. All it takes is someone with bad intentions to start a string of terrible events. 2) The staff do not relay important information in a timely manner regarding your loved one. When Jo was injured while under the care of Nu'uanu Hale, I was not notified until after 6 hours. When I requested to speak with the doctor (Dr. Gries,) that treated Jo, the popolo woman who plays receptionist upstairs refused to give me any contact information. She said she would "page" the doctor to call me. It's been almost two weeks and I have not been contacted by anyone. On another incident, a fellow resident of Jo's told me of Jo having a breakdown while being spoken to by the nursing staff. When we questioned the staff regarding this incident, they each acted as if they were unaware. This upset me because family should be contacted when any type of incident happens to their loved one. If they fall, refuse to eat, have a mental or emotional breakdown, basically anything pertaining to their well being, we should be notified immediately. Not if and when the staff sees fit. You are neglecting to inform family of important details Nu'uanu Hale. This brings me to Jo's diet. Our family was not included when deciding how Jo's food would be prepared. They decided on their own that Jo be placed on a puree diet. When confronted, they said they had Jo analyzed and felt this was best. However, being that I have the Power of Attorney regarding all decisions towards Jo's health, I should've been included. Then, when they switched Jo to a regular diet, they failed to notify me again. The staff lacks communication with the patient's family. You cannot trust them to relay all information to you. It varies depending on if they feel like doing it or not. 3) We questioned the popolo receptionist upstairs of the shower and bed sheet changing schedule. She confidently told me the patients get showered daily. With the exception being if the patients refuse. I got confused at this point. So... Jo can go a full month without a shower, That is basically what she told me. She then told me that the bed sheets get changed daily when Jo is being showered. This also did not make sense because of the fact that there's no guarantee that Jo will be showered so same goes for the changing of the sheets. I did my own record keeping. Every day I saw Jo, I marked the bed sheet. The staff did not change the sheets for 3 days despite being told otherwise by the receptionist. Jo also did not get a shower for 3 days. Normally, I would not make a big deal of the sheets not being changed as frequently as they should. Yet, they put it on themselves for me to keep track of this. I found a bloodstain that's been on Jo's bed for at least 18 hours. I initially saw it while visiting in the morning. When I returned later that night, it was still there. They did not change the sheets until we demanded it to be done. If I'm not mistaken, that is a bio-hazard. To my knowledge, if there is any type of bodily fluids on the bed, it should be addressed immediately!!! The staff played as though they had no recollection of that ever being there when clearly, Jo got injured early that morning and was bleeding. Unbelievable. 4) I watched Jo call for a nurse with the call button. When the nurse arrived, she pushed Jo to the restroom and let Jo be. She didn't make sure Jo was well balanced to stand up alone. Neither did she help Jo return to bed. Had I known that nurse would've done such a poor job, I would have taken Jo to the restroom myself. Fortunately, this happened only once during my visit with this one particular nurse. The other nurses that I observed, stayed with and assisted Jo in the restroom. 5) Nu'uanu Hale offers to do laundry. We thought that was great until it took a few days for Jo's clothes to return. I'm not sure if we got all of Jo's clothes back even with all of them being labeled. One of us saw a huge pile of unwashed clothes that had been sitting for a few days according to one of the staff members. We took Jo's clothes home to wash since then. My mother spent a month at Nuuanu Hale after suffering a compression fracture. While a resident she received excellent care. Staff members were attentive, friendly, respectful and caring. One particular aide went out of her way to see that my mother had everything she needed/wanted to be comfortable. Noting that my mother enjoyed eating papaya, she notified the kitchen and my mother had papaya for breakfast every day. Mom was kept clean, her bedding was changed every time she was bathed, she had a call button and was changed whenever she needed. While at NH my mother worked with physical and occupational therapists. After a month, she was able to return home. The facility is older, but kept clean and in good repair. I frequently saw maintenance people cleaning. After reading the two unfavorable reviews, I would like to say that I never witnessed anything that would cause me concern. However, I would encourage anyone who does have concerns to immediately contact the administration. The administrative staff is very responsive and would certainly address any issue that may occur. read more

I was fortunate to have stayed just a month and all rhe negative reviews is by far wrong. Very professional caring and clean especially the food outstanding. Physical therapy is offered which was a plus to heal aggressively and comfortable to return to loved ones that much stronger. Staff and nurses were very friendly and made you feel like family i would recommend this care home to everyone that needs care and support to better the health and healing of ones injuries. There are 3 shifts that i cant say anything but smooth team work and transfer of each employee that take there jobs serious to ensure the utmost safety and care for each patient. Thank you Nuuanu Hale office staff, nurses and maintenance workers for taking good care of me and making my stay a one to remember. This place is out of a horror movie. My father just passed away and I wanted to write this because I don't want anyone elses family being brought here without knowing some of the things that go on. My dad was in a room with three others and times I've visited you could smell the others had made a bowel movement and no one would come check up on them and for hours. It was horrible! Sometimes I had to tell the nurses at the front who were sitting on their phones! or in the hallway a woman had thrown up and they didn't clean it up right away. It was a horrible place. First off this place FAILED to let us know that my dad's liver was FAILING. They told us AFTER A YEAR OF KNOWING!!!!!!! They never ONCE mentioned to us about it when we visited. Had they had notified us, we could've done something earlier about it. We only found out because my dad had fallen and they notified us about the fall. When we went to see him the toxins were building up in his body and we didn't know what was going on so they spilled the details. They said they never told us because my dad was still conscious enough to make his own decisions! We had him rushed to Queens because they weren't going to do anything about it because they said my dad didn't want to go. My brother had power of attorney and they are supposed to notify him of all changes BUT NEVER DID! and when we were leaving they said "oh your dad would be a good candidate for hospice" LIKE REALLY BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T NOTIFY US OF CHANGES? and now its passed the point of no return. I was furious but just wanted my dad out of there. I'm writing this because I don't want anyone elses family to go through what we did. I don't even know if anything can be done about this place but if you think I'm going to keep quiet think again. NO ONE should go through this horrible ordeal. Administrator Gayle in early April said Nuuanu Hale would credit 17 days back to my credit card, since my mother passed away on March 14th. When my VISA credit card statement arrived in the mail last Saturday, no credit was made back to my card. I called NH this morning and Liane in the accounting department said she credited back the $4471 to the MasterCard they have on file for me. I don't have any MasterCard. I asked her to immediately credit the funds back to my VISA card and provide proof of the reimbursement. This time I got some kind of receipt via email, but VISA said it may take a day to 10 days to process the reimbursement. Auwe, Nuuanu Hale. Why not do the right thing the first time. read more

My mom is in this place now and the people who takes care of the patients is terrible. I say people cause they sure are not care givers. I asked one of them if they could check my mom cause she needed to be chang ed as I could smell the or. Also she was getting uncomfortable and kept trying to move around. She told me to wait until they do all their rounds so don't worry. That made me furious as how would you feel if you had to stay in a dirty diaper until it's time to check everyone. My husband was admitted to Nuuanu Hale as a Hospice patient. Staff was attentive to his and my needs. I had no problems with his stay, in fact I praise the care he has. He was taken off hospice care and still receives the care he had when he was admitted June 2012. Staff is always concerned for his welfare. They contact me promptly whenever there is an incident ie. fall. Although the facility is about 78 years old, it's always clean and orderly. I'm satisfied with my husbands care and feel he is in good caring hands. read more
