What can I say about Fargo? What a special place this town is in "flyover country", and what a special restaurant Kroll's Diner is. From the moment I sat down inside the front of the house, the retro look made me swear I was in Kingman, AZ enjoying a short stack before merging back onto Route 66 and cruising top-down to Barstow. It's THAT nostalgic. My server, Jennifer, was so darned pleasant that I hung around for an hour and a half, even with places to be and things to see. In fact, I could tell everyone working at Kroll's was a long-time employee, and that says a lot of good things about the place, particularly in the service industry. The decor is chrome and gasoline... a wonderful tribute to a time when America was a one-of-a-kind place to grow up. The food was mostly standard diner and breakfast fair, but that's never a bad thing, and it definitely did NOT disappoint! Regional dishes transplanted from Germany are available, too... the sausage was seasoned and griddled to absolute umami perfection. I rounded out my smorgasbord experience with Jennifer's recommendation, a totally-unnecessary-but-amazing slice of peach pie. If you're from Fargo, you probably already know about Kroll's. If you're not from Fargo, and you end up in this town like I did on a mission to plant your flag during a 50-state tour, you'd be doing yourself a big favor by stopping in and enjoying the food and the scenery. Kroll's diner is like a blast from the past. The food is wholesome and homemade with that diner-esque vibe that leaves a layer of grease on the plate. I went with a group of friends for breakfast and ate every last piece of it without a single regret. The eggs where cooked perfectly with delicious golden yolks, the bacon was a little too cooked but still delicious, and the hashbrowns moped up the yolks gloriously. As for the pancakes, well, look at them! The pancakes where fluffy and light and absorbed the syrup like sponge with made every mouthful ooze with each bite. Kroll's was a pleasant surprise in Fargo ND and I'm so glad I stumbled upon it. read more

In Fargo celebrating our 47 anniversary, did not want to have continental breakfast at the motel so took my hubby to try this place since he Loves, LOVES breakfast, well he got breakfast.. Outside looks just like a 1950's diner, inside looks like 1950's diner, tables and booths and a diners bar. Cute 50's nostalgia everywhere, this place was packed when we arrived at 11:00 am, not sure if it keeps the unending people stream going all day but when we were there it was constant. The staff was friendly and very efficient, people at least while we were there were never waiting long before they were seated. Quickly got drinks and my coffee then came our breakfast, two eggs, chicken fried steak covered in sausage gravy, extra crispy hash browns and biscuits and sausage gravy...so very good who does not like a crispy chicken fried steak. The sausage gravy was typical, not really much of the usual sausage taste but you find this everywhere unless you make it at home. Biscuits were good but typical as well. Hash browns just like how we like them and let's face it who can mess up two sunny side eggs. Everyone was also ordering bowls of hot knoephla soup (this is a German, American restaurant) and their rhubarb cinnamon rolls, so we had to get two bowls of soup and two rolls to go. The soup is really homie comfort soup, would be great on a cold day, taste like gnocchi cream soup to me, it was good but maybe I would try something else next time, rhubarb rolls are very tasty, And very large I can see why people buy these, However, Mine was WAY over baked to the point the last inch was crispy dry, the top with the rhubarb goodness was the really tasty part, But I know they knew these where over done and chose to sell anyway, I would have taken the loss and started over, only because they were pushing and proud of these, next time I know to look at them first before having the waitress bag them... will we go back? There are not a lot of good breakfast choices in Fargo. Kind of surprising for a midwest town of this size. Gave Kroll's a try even though it does not have great reviews on Yelp! At 7 am on Friday the place was pretty wide open. Seated promptly, friendly service, and my order was taken and food delivered in good time. Coffee was OK, but I had to ask twice for a glass of water. The omelet was mediocre compared to what I'm used to, but maybe this is more the standard here in Fargo. Mine was topped with a slice of processed cheese. Really??? Marbled rye toast was the best part of the breakfast. This place gets the job done for breakfast, but it's in no way excellent. We were in Fargo for the weekend. We arrived an hour before closing Friday night. The man that seated us met us with a smile and promptly took us to our booth. Our waitress was also prompt and friendly. I had the cabbage rolls they came with mashed potatoes with the same tomato "sauce/gravy" on top, green beans & a roll. My husband ordered the hot roast beef sandwiich with mashed potatoes and gravy. The cabbage rolls were GREAT!!! The potatoes and tomato gravy were really good too as was the roll. The green beans were straight out of the can with no seasoning. We thought the sandwich was odd when she set it down since we were expecting it to be served open faced with gravy but it was a sandwich on toasted bread. It was an ok sandwich just not what was ordered. (He NEVER sends his food back so we are not taking points off) the sandwich was hot roast beef, melted cheese, grilled onions and tomatoes. When he got to the 2nd half we scraped the cheese, tomatoes and onion off (as much as we could) and put the rest of his mashed potatoes and gravy on top of it. Now THAT was a good hot roast beef! The restaurant had a nice typical diner atmosphere. Even though it was getting close to closing time our waitress kept checking to see if we needed anything else. I would like to give it 4 stars because the service was great and the burger was good but unfortunately it lacked on cleanliness. Milkshake machine that was filthy which sucks because I was considering one but that just detoured me from doing so. I'm a big Krolls fan, but i went in for the first time since the pandemic assuming they would be using proper covid precautions, and was extremely disappointed to see none of the staff wearing a masks, and no social distancing happening with seating. I ended up eating in anyway since i recently got the vaccine, but a friend i was with contracted covid and we're almost certain it was from Krolls. The service was quick and great and the food was delicious! Sometimes diner food can feel way to greasy and cheap but what we had was delicious and not overly greasy. Flavorful, with just enough cheese and even though it was loaded with kielbasa, it was not greasy at all. My husband had a skillet with the best biscuit and gravy ever. What a fun place in busy Fargo! We went to try some original German food. This place was so cute! Loved the fun diner feeling! We got the famous German soup! Yum! It is a cream chicken base soup with soft potato dumplings and potatoes- only had 1 potato in my soup. Dang it. I got a Rueben- it was okay. I would not recommend it. Clam chowder good. They were so sweet and let my daughter order off the senior menu because she wanted roast beef and they don't have roast beef on the kids menu. Hubby got the giant skillet and it was good also. Tried the German version of cheese cake and I liked it!! Different but in a new good way. Went with raspberry. When in Fargo you should check out this cute place. read more

They ran out of dinner bread and gave me tasteless fries instead. The sirloin steak, which looked nothing like any sirloin Ive ever had, was AWFUL. I could not eat it. When I'm on the road in ND, Kroll's Diner is my occasional go-to breakfast stop. I keep it simple; Eggs OE, Hashbrowns, Link Sausages, and Sour Dough toast. It's always good, HB's crispy, eggs done right, and the larger than most Links excellent. If you want the local news, keep your mouth closed and your ears open. You'll know what's going on before you leave. Down home cooking and famous for their Knoefle soup. Be aware though, when doing your research on the Knoefle soup, you'll find all North Dakotans will insist that they make a better one. read more

This is a diner - no doubt about it. The decor brings you straight back to the 1950's. Their menu supports both traditional diner fare (roast beef commercial sandwich, malts and pies) as well as German specialties and modern expectations - a little of everything. The salad was your standard iceberg lettuce from a bag with croutons served on a silver pan. The roast beef commercial was HUGE, but there was enough salt between the meat and gravy to cause a kidney stone. The crispy chicken sandwich came to our table hot and freshly fried garnished with lettuce and a tomato, with optional mayo - I'd definitely order the sandwich again.
