I don't ever do big grocery hauls at Kroger--any Kroger--because HEB is always cheaper. However, I go to this "combat Kroger" for the convenience... Over the years. they started carrying more and more organic and gluten free products. This location doesn't have a seafood department, but they started carrying some non-frozen seafood options, along with sushi and rotisserie chickens. Every now and then, they have their roses on sale for $8/dozen... I do want them to diversify their wine options--it's a lot of sweet and cheap stuff. Staff is always helpful. read more

This Kroger is an insult to the community. I have been living in this community for almost a year now and its a shame that we have to travel outside of our community to get a decent grocery store. No deli, no meat counter, no pharmacy and defintely no curbside. The last time I was here, I saw a cockroach crawling on some product in the store. Yes, I know its Houston, but what other grocery store has roaches at 12 in the afternoon crawling on the shelves??? I was so disgusted and I felt terrible that I was there to pick up a birthday cake. Staff isn't that great. It's almost like your bothering them by coming to this tiny good for nothing Kroger. I feel bad for the elderly that depend on this Kroger because we do not deserve such a disgusting place to shop and sadly they can get away with it as we are techinally in a food desert here. read more

Yikes. I was short on time for some quick grab before going to work after an event at GRB Convention Center. Google Maps pointed me to this Kroger store. It's so tiny. Not hard to find but there was no obvious sign from the road where I came from. Store seemed crowded because someone was stocking the shelves on a Friday afternoon. I usually start with grocery first. There was enough for me to shop. But I got disgusted with the fruit flies at the discount banana shelves. Ugh. I left. Then, I was headed to drinks section. A salesman stopped me and tried to sell me electricity but his WiFi got disconnected. I really had no time to listen to sales pitches. Just why the store allow 3rd party salespeople to be hiding between the aisles without a table. I first thought he was a beggar. Ugh. Just ugh everywhere in this store. I got what I needed and don't think I will ever be back. read more

I usually go to the kroger office Studemont, but this one is actually closer to home. This place is smaller than the other location and doesn't even have a deli. Place is clean and organized. Staff are friendly. Plenty of parking out front including handicap parking. read more

The Kroger on Polk feels like stepping into a time machine--like the one I went to growing up in Kentucky. It's definitely dated, and I'm not sure corporate even knows it still exists, but it's fully stocked with the basics. I'm glad it's here because it's right off the bike path and an easy stop on my way home. It's not my go-to for big grocery runs, but for one or two items, it gets the job done. Some might say the area's "unsafe," but I've never had a problem. It's got a certain old-school charm. read more

Smaller grocery store but has all the staples. Only a couple manned checkouts, but multiple self serve checkouts.

Every staff member I've interacted with have been pleasant. That goes a long way for me. Is it a signature Kroger yet, no. However, it's coming together. It's not in Upper Kirby/ River Oaks so don't expect pristine presentation. I can get my cashew milk and some organic produce. Not feeling the seedless watermelons though! Good enough to get by for now. They even have repaved the parking lot. It's coming along, slowly but surely. read more

I called tonight and spoke with Alfredo, a Manager at Kroger and explained that we were having problems with getting a digital download for just one item, which was Tater Tots. He refused to allow it as a courtesy, then relented, and said he would only do it this one time, and not again very rudely. I told him to disregard. There is a reason Kroger is behind HEB in sales, Kroger's food is often not fresh, and their lines are super long, and their service is AWFUL....I could not believe how rude Alfredo the manager at the 4000 Polk Street location was to me tonight. read more

Consider me an X LONG TIME LOYAL CUSTOMER after my experience with manager Jasmyne on 04/09/2020. I have patronized this location since before the manager was born I'm sure. I admit this Location has always been far from the best but good for a few quick items. I purchased those few items and thought total was off so checked my receipt after walking away from register and noticed an overcharge for bottle of Margarita advertised in store for $8.99 but was charged $13.99 +tax. I kindly returned to register to alert clerk who went to shelf and verified the display price of $8.99 and told me to go to customer service desk who claimed it has nothing to do with them even though being sold by their store and said she would not refund the difference like it was my fault they used false advertising to get me to make the purchase so I asked for total refund of the product which she said she would also not do and it had nothing to do with Kroger. (Excuse me but the sign outside says Kroger) she attempted to put in a kind way that I had just been screwed. An issue between Kroger and their supplier should not have anything to do with me. If this is how Kroger treats its long-time loyal customers don't worry about seeing me again. $5. surely won't break me but the principal of having a business you've given your money to for years kicks you during a worldwide pandemic is sad. Especially after you make donations to Houston Food Bank to help needy in the same transaction. FOR RECORD YOU WILL GET BETTER DEALS AT HEB, BETTER PRODUCTS, CLEANER STORES, DELI'S WITH FRESH FOOD THAT LOOKS EDIBLE AND MANAGERS WITH MORE EXPERIENCE IN CUSTOMER SERVICE. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR, THERE IS A WALMART AND AN H-E-B and FIESTA MART NEARBY. Skip the hassle and possibility of getting screwed by million dollar corporation and go to those stores instead. read more

Great Service props to Harris for helping us shop came here to shop for a month and always happy when Harris is here to help us.

When I have a need to purchase (for my mother) a hot lunch that is nutritious and delicious, the go to Kroger I prefer is at 4000 Polk. The deli staff there is wonderful and it feels like a place for food like I used to get in my younger days. I would particularly like to highly compliment Ms. Regina, who is dutifully there in the deli, cooking and serving dinners at lunch time. In traveling around Houston quite a bit, I have had the opportunity to try a number of Kroger stores that sell the lunch specials and this store is a cut above - by far. Thank you Krogers for the wonderful and dedicated employees like Ms Ruby. She genuinely put her customers (and the food) first... read more

Known as Combat Kroger. Even the parking lot is scary. Bring your pepper spray. The guard post at the front reminds me a little of the bus station. It smells bad, the clientele are strange, but not really in a good way. My last visit, for example, an old woman accosted me in the toilet paper aisle. She insisted on saving my soul. I told her there's no helping my soul, so she doubled her efforts. Let this little vignette serve to illustrate what to expect. Again, bring your pepper spray. read more

What a dump! The Parking lot floods and gets massive pot holes. Nobody returns their shopping carts because there's a lack of return spots for them or they're just lazy, so park at your own risk. Poor selection when it comes to meat and poultry. Sometimes, depending on the checker, my bread gets smashed because they just lazily sack your stuff. Nobody wants smashed bread, ok?! They seriously need to train staff on how to sack- I thought it was common sense and sacking 101 to not bag meat with household products. I try to avoid this place at all costs but it's right down the street from me! Definitely a place to stop and run in and out if I need to pick up an item or two but would not shop here exclusively. It definitely needs a facelift. read more

Moving my initial two star review to a three star for an improvement in store appearance, customer service, products and flow of the entire store all together. It's not up to a four/five YET in my opinion , but I see it heading there. Continue your success Kroger Polk! Change is difficult, and with the help of concerned neighbors and stronger management this store will continue moving forward. Thank you for hearing the neighborhood as it continues to evolve. read more

Convenient. I'm not sure why everyone gripes about this Kroger.. "combat kroger" They have an iffy selection at best, and it's pretty grimey but if you don't want to drive into downtown or midtown it definitely wins for ease of use, assuming you're not looking for something crazy. Not my first choice when doing weekly shopping either, but again it serves it's purpose in the 2nd ward. Staff are usually pretty friendly too. Don't let the other reviews sway you if you're in the area and need something quick. read more

This store bites. Usually half the stuff is expired and the lock on the cigs has been broken twice now, for about a week at a time. This place should be shut down and revamped. People actually shop here and expect their produce to be fresh. Kroger management, this place needs a TON of help. I'd rather take my business to HEB at this point. read more

Ok, this Kroger is seriously grungy... but, I want to shop there all the time because it is in the East End. For us over on Navigation, it is the only major grocery store that's close. I hate driving all the way to the 11th St Krogers (even though it is nice), or fighting traffic and buses to make it to the Randalls in Midtown (and it isn't that great either). They technically had the stuff I was looking for right then, but the produce section was dismal. They had more varieties of canned marshmallow spread than they did varieties of apples. When is HEB going to open up a grocery store near downtown??? read more

This is my go-to grocery store due to the location and value. Over the past year this Kroger has seen a major facelift and has rehauled its infrastructure. They now offer many organic and locally produced options, as well as many store brand and value priced items. Many of the employees there are local high school kids, so they are respectful and friendly. It's unfair to compare the size and the quality of this store with other Kroger stores (like Disco Kroger on Montrose) because it's catering to its area. Eastwood is economically diverse, but many households are lower income so this store stocks things that are lower in price range. This Kroger also gets a bad rap because it is "dangerous" but that's just a euphemism people use when considering a dense, lower-income ethnic area. To be fair, the negatives about the store are that there is only one freezer aisle and I wish there were a larger selection of meat and fish. Students at UH should patron this store. It could really help develop the store to a better quality if it received 10,000-20,000 more customers. read more

I'm a new resident of East Downtown and I wanted to give this Kroger a fair chance despite the negative rating and reviews. This grocery store isn't as terrible as it's depicted. In all honesty, it just needs a facelift. The service and the contents are satisfactory. I have no complaints about the produce and meat (which is all that matters in the grand scheme). I probably won't shop here often simply because I need more variety, but it'll be my go-to when I need something quick. I'm big on aesthetics and that's mainly where this store loses it's appeal. Hopefully the company can find a way to update the store without losing business and inconveniencing customers. read more

Typically I'm a huge fan of Kroger cakes, but today was UNACCEPTABLE. I work at a nearby school and a coworker picked up this cake to congratulate a teacher on her wedding. This is what we picked up. Kroger - 10/10/2018 - Grocery Near Me - Houston, Texas

See all

As a Houston newbie, I am almost entirely unfamiliar with Kroger, and as a first-year U of H law student, I am well-aware that the area surrounding the university is, to put it mildly, sketchy. I plan to do most of my grocery shopping at the H-E-B on Buffalo Speedway, but tonight I needed a couple of things and didn't want to drive all the way to H-E-B, so I decided to visit this Kroger, which is only about a mile from campus. I figured that surely the reviews on here would be exaggerated, and that there's no way it could possibly be *that* bad. I was wrong. This is the single most dirty, tiny and frightening grocery store I've ever been to outside of New York City. The experiencing of walking in is an anachronism in itself, kinda like entering one of the ancient movie theaters built in the era before stadium seating and digital projection. There is only one door in and one door out, and both are only wide enough to barely fit the width of a shopping cart. There are six checkout aisles. No, that's not a typo and I didn't intend to type sixteen: six, only two of which appear to be staffed even at peak hours. The store's product selection is almost shockingly small, as one would expect. Worse still, prices across the board are MUCH higher than H-E-B's, even on the "discounted" items you apparently need a member card to obtain. $7.20 for a half-gallon of Blue Bell? Seriously?!? A number of the reviews I've seen here and elsewhere refer to this location as a "ghetto Kroger." I'm a little surprised these Houstonians aren't more familiar with the demographics of their own city. I did my homework long before arriving in town, and know that the greater Eastwood area in which Kroger is situated is overwhelmingly Hispanic-populated. Thus, the more correct term would be "barrio Kroger." (OTOH the very first thing one sees upon entering the beer aisle are 40s of Olde English. Way to live up to stereotypes, Kroger!) I am giving this store two stars instead of one for only two reasons: it has been recently renovated to some extent (although its linoleum floors appear to be decades old), and the store has wisely hired a security guard to keep watch over the parking lot at night. While I will continue to visit this store, it will be only for emergencies or if I'm in need of a solitary item. read more

I once called the cops from my car in this Kroger because a trick-turn-gone-wrong was happening in the parking lot. That's probably all you need to know. Employees have always been nice here--that's the only reason for two stars. It's so close to our house, so it's hard not to go once in a while. Unless you need chilled wine, decent cheese, shrimp, or any type of water. read more

Dirty, Old, Gross. I don't buy produce or meat from this store. Looking under the produce, you will find that it is sitting on rusty, dirty, metal racks. Looking under the meat packages you will see the same thing. Under some of the meat they use a white or black liner to protect the meat, but in some cases the liners haven't been changed in a while. The liners saturated with chicken juice gross me out the most. More Negatives: * The aisles are narrow * The store is understaffed, which results in long checkout lines * The employees are not happy * Poor wine selection. This is true in general for the east side. Other Thinks to know * They sale lotto tickets and scratch off tickets * They have an ATM machine * They have two red box DVD rental kiosks * They have a coinstar machine to count your coins read more

This Kroger is the only grocery store within walking distance. That's the only thing keeping it from getting one star. It's run-down, and if you want a cart, you have to find one in the parking lot outside. Locals tend to steal them and keep them for personal shopping trips, and corporate has no intentions of replacing carts or keeping them inside. There are no surveillance cameras, so you often see people pilfering items. No real selection in, well, anything. I knew this woud happen when I decided to move here, but this place is a hole. With Mandola's expanding and a light rail going in on Scott Street, this place could go for a bulldozing and rebuilding. read more

I'm new to East End and this Kroger is the closest grocery store to me. Not gonna lie, I didn't have high hopes when I first came in. I'm a montrose transplant and have been shopping at the massive HEB off W Alabama for years. I didn't know how this teeny Kroger would compare but I was pleasantly surprised! First off, the aesthetics were pretty nostalgic for me. This is one of the few Krogers that hasn't been completely renovated yet and still has the original signage from the 90s. But from what I hear a renovation is in the works! Bittersweet. You aren't going to find some exotic curry paste direct from Thailand like you might at a larger store. However this Kroger does have a decent organic section and you can get your basic grocery shopping done. The only things I would say are really lacking is the meat counter and the beer/wine selection. What can I say, the craft beer selection at HEB has spoiled me. Important to note - the staff is incredibly friendly. I had a manager come up to me at checkout and say "thanks for shopping with us!". Gotta love that customer service. I'll be back. read more

horrible customer service at the service booth! On Saturday the 8th, between 10 am and 12 noon, the young lady working in the booth stayed talking on your personal phone the entire time she was "helping" me with my car license tags. she told me after ten minutes of entering information, "the system won't let me register your vehicle, you probably need new plates". I took off from work the next working day and went to the downtown courthouse and the staff told me I did not need new plates, that Kroger had the problem. the same lady told my son a similar excuse two weeks earlier. the young lady apparently gets on your personal phone all the time and gets under the security camera in the corner near the door to stay out of the view of the camera. poor, poor service. read more

This lady just coughed in her hand before trying to bag my groceries... shopping here is painful.

Just moved to the area so this is the closest grocery store to me. Easily one of the most inconsistent and annoying stores you can shop at last hour they close. Every time I've came during this last hour, they remind you on the intercom every five mins they are closing. "We are closing in 55 mins, make your way to front. We are closing in 50 mins, make your way to the front. We will not sell cigarettes or alcohol five mins before we close. We are closing in 45 mins." You get the point. Tonight they were supposed to close at 11pm. I just needed one item. I walk up to the door at 10:54. The Hispanic lady at the front says "We closed at 10:53." Wow. Customers still in the building. Just wow. I wouldn't go here if it wasn't for being so close to where I just moved. read more
